I'm not sure exactly where you live so not sure whether  you can answer my question.  How do your hydrangeas get on in your climate - we are in a semi desert type climate - very hot in summer and several days freezing overnight.  Is a hydrangea sturdy enough to cope with those extremes?

Your story also reminded me of something that happened to our friends when I was very young.  The dad was Irish so he, DW and  young daughter went over to visit family at one stage (this would have been in the 60s or early 70s so a visit from NZ to Ireland was a very special event).  They had a flourishing couple of hydrangeas at home and, when they got to Ireland the family they were staying with proudly showed them their very precious hydrangea - daughter quickly deflated them when she helpfully advised that they had lots of these plants and they were growing like weeds.  Very embarrassing for her mum and dad!

Marina I live in Warragul in Gippsland, about an hour and a half from the centre of Melbourne. Hydrangeas grow quite well here as long as long as they get a bit of protection from the hot sun and they get a little bit of water in the summer and they don't mind the cold weather.  Soil with low PH produces blue flowers and high PH produces pink flowers.   The one DH cut back was about 7 feet tall.  I don't give them any special treatment although some people like to change the PH level to produce different colours.

The  man who said it can't be done should not interupt the woman doing it.

Thanks for that, I will see what we can do about getting some nice plants later in the year.

Keep well.

Up at 3.15 am for our flight to Cairns, met Gert for lunch and a catch-up (looking good as usual), going to dinner with my friend’s son and wife tonight. We’ve hit the ground running on this quick 5 day trip.

Looks like we're all on the move these days.

I often thought of doing a trip on the Ghan, but don't think I will ever talk DH into it!  Enjoy the journey and send lots of photos.

Judy, I often think of Gert and wonder how she is doing.  Please say hi from me.  We are involved in organising a big conference in a couple of years based in Brisbane and I am excited that we are looking at offering a trip up to Cairns as a side event.

Everyone is so busy. Great. Freezing here. They say it may snow. Zoom meeting this morning, Dr at lunch time and out for afternoon tea with friend.

Everyone seems busy.
We took friends out for coffee this morning and as we were dropping them back home we had a phone call. It was another friend at our place. We went back and had more coffee with them. We were then contacted about our missing Bluey. It turned out not to be him.  It was a long way away and I don’t think he could have flown that far and survived in the weather we’ve been having.
