Tonight's yoga night so we are having meatloaf with potatoes done in the slow cooker, and maybe some frozen veggies thrown in just before I leave :)

Goodness Judy and Cookie. Glad you are both ok. Cookie that would have been very scary.
Sounds fun obbie. You are brave taking 4 kids

The fishing looks like it was fun Chookie.
Wouldn't mind a bit of snow here CC. It's hot - again.
We are getting everything ready to head off for a week's holiday out to Mudgee, known for its great food and wine. There goes the waistline - again  :-))

Chit Chat / Re: Dense Rock-hard Hot Cross Buns

MEP I can think of a couple of possibilities, assuming you added the yeast (I managed to forget the yeast once  :-))). Either the yeast is no longer active, or somehow the mix overheated and the yeast got too hot.
Check your yeast to see if it foams or bubbles in teacup with a bit of lukewarm water with a pinch of sugar. If it hasn't foamed after a few minutes it's probably no good.
Also I noticed that the bun dough got quite warm in the tmx bowl when it was so hot over the weekend. Did you leave it in the bowl to rise? I played it safe and took mine out of the tmx to rise in a different bowl. I read somewhere that anything over 40°C may damage or kill the yeast.
I made two batches of hot cross buns over the weekend, both using Chookie's recipe. One lot I altered quite a bit using very sweet dried apricots, some spelt flour and extra ground ginger and they have all been gobbled up except 2 when I last looked.
Good luck with your next batch MEP.

Wow Chookie. I think you should have another hot cross bun instead of a nervous breakdown tomorrow night :) You'll have earned a little treat!
How old are ‘the children’ Gayle?
The children are all in their 20s Judy  :-)) Certainly old enough to do a little shopping and food prep.

It must have been your cordial Gayle, I hope she continues to improve.
Thanks Judy. Easy remedy that was worth a try :)
Djinni, I think your Chook has been sending messages to my Chook.   When I went up with the food scrap bucket, my sick Chook hopped in wth the others.
A girl friend for the depressed budgie sounds nice.
Not a good day for the Diet. Went out for coffee and resisted the pastries. Had Diet lunch but cooked all afternoon.  Think I will have to keep out of the kitchen.  Ate 2 hot X buns for dinner.  :-X. They were delicious.
Hope your chook improves too Chookie.
It is hard to diet when you spend a lot of time in the kitchen Chookie, especially your kitchen. All manner of delicious things are produced there!

DD's luck to buy a bird with a mental illness. We still love him to bits though. Time will tell. I had quite a chuckle at that.
Maybe he might like a girlfriend cookie.
Hilarious ;D ;D ;D
Yesterday was a pretty stressful day here. DS and I managed to catch the sick chook with a net. Sick or not, she could still move very quickly. I tried to check her abdomen and then massaged her crop, which was pretty empty. Wasn't very relaxing for either of us! :P I saw a post on a blog I like (Down to Earth) suggesting that homemade raspberry cordial is good for sick chooks, so I made some and put it in the chooks' water. They seemed to really like it lol.  When I went up to the backyard this morning the sick chook was waiting in line with the others to get out. She's also eating and drinking. This afternoon she was busy preening herself, with feathers falling out everywhere. I'm hoping she's on the road to recovery, although I still have no idea what's wrong with her.

Mab and Cookie you're making me feel guilty  :-[  A little while back I decided that I wasn't going to organise dinners etc for the "children". I thought I'd encourage them to cook for themselves.  Found a book called "The No Time To Cook Book" with heaps of easy recipes that take less than 20 minutes and I put that out on the kitchen bench before we go away :) It's still in mint condition :-))
Today I made more Icelandic Banana bread, more Oatloaf and Savoury Mince with brown rice for dinner.

After seeing Judy's lovely dinner I tried this recipe from RTE last night.
I added more to the recipe (probably times one and a half) to fill my big baking dish. The family loved it so it's in the mix of the regular quick and easy meals we have here. Wasn't quick enough to get a photo before they scoffed the lot.  :-))

Going to Bikram yoga tonight so dinner will be something out of the slow cooker. I now do two nights and saturday arvo at Bikram which means 3 slow cooker dinners a week now :) I'm waiting for complains so I can suggest that they cook dinner on those nights. Silence so far.

Good morning all.
Back "on deck" after a very hectic week or two with a trip to the accountant the highlight  :P A tax refund is coming my way.
That's the good news.
The bad news is that I have a sick chook. She has been very quiet for a week or two, hasn't laid for about a week and is moulting. She doesn't seem to be eating and hasn't come out of the henhouse this morning. Of course she is the most feral of the flock and is very difficult to catch. Any chook whisperers out there? I would appreciate your advice. TIA

The muffins look yummy Astarra.

Now that is a holiday Robyn  8)

Not real hungry but would love a slice of bread or a scone.  Wonder if this means I am addicted to carbs!
Lol Chookie. You're doing a great job sticking to the plan.

Sounds fun Cookie.
DH is currently off buying new bits for his Corvette  :-)) Lucky we have a big garage.
I've been food shopping and enjoying time (almost) alone. Only one other person home today :)
Speaking of big boys' toys, this impressive collection is now working at the end of our street. We think they're building a whole lot of new units. Just what we need here - more traffic NOT. The neighbourhood boys are beside themselves with excitement. So funny to watch.
