thats intersesting to know cookie, and thanks dd.
now i am very happy to inform you all that after a comedy of errors, i finally made the vertical layer cake! i gave it to my mum and dad tonight, they were very surprised and impressed. i was a bit disapointed with my decorating skills, mostly related to the piping bags. i borrowed a tupperware one from a friend, oh my goodness, has anyone used one of these, it was the most horrendous thing i have ever used! so then i tried using a nozzle in  a glad bag, ok for half a rose then it burst! so then i ran down the road to mums (while they were out for there ruby anniversary meal) and all i could find was a kids set! so needless to say mine looked nothing like the beautiful roses on 'i am baker's' blog, i will post some pics tomorrow.
thanks for listening everyone  :)
the answer is chocolate, who cares what the question is!

Can't wait to see the pics and well done for even thinking about the vertical cake thing!  I bet your mum and dad were amazed!

To have done all that hard work Nicky only to be let down by poor decorating equipment must have been disappointing but hey, we haven't seen the photo yet so it probably looks great.  Artists are their own worst enemies and are very critical of their work whereas for the everyday Mum and Dad, any effort our children go to for us is greatly appreciated.  Well done, I agree with LellyJ, 10 out of 10 for making this cake in the first place.
