Thought it might be fun ;D to find out what we all do/did for a job.......anybody keen ???
I will go first................ :P
I am currently working at home 24/7 as a mum to 2 boys and I work as a Thermomix consultant in Perth WA. I am a high school Art teacher, not currently teaching. My last teaching job was at an all boys school.
-
I always worked in a secretarial role but have been a carer for my husband for the past 22 years.
-
I was a teacher of mainly young children and for the last year so was a deputy principal. I loved my job, but love retirement better. I occasionally do some relief teaching, but would rather be home playing with my TMX.
As well as playing TMX I'm now the Treasurer for the local Model A Restorers Club as DH is into Model A cars. I also do 'the books' for DH and his brother who are the Admistrators appointed by the State Tribunal for their Mother. Believe me the Model A club ask for less than the State Administration Tribunal.
Also do a bit of volunteering and lots of travel.
-
Yes I would take a day with the TMX over relief any day too ;D
-
I was a sales rep for many years - in Veterinary products which is where I met Thermomixer -and then human natural medicines. Now I am a Thermomix consultant and setting up a business based around helping people lose weight through uncovering emotional triggers & then changing their mental processes rather than relying on willpower. I say I am in waist management!!!
ANYBODY interested in JaneeZee's area of work - please send her a PM http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=86 (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=86) - thanks. Inserted/Editted by Thermomixer (she said she would be happy to do this !!)
-
I was a sales rep for many years - in Veterinary products which is where I met Thermomixer - ......
Purely in a professional capacity !!!!!! :o :o :o :o - I am a vet. Nothing else going on there !!!! MrsT may have thought so ... but no, just professional colleagues. :-*
-
I need "embarrassed" emoticon - I had hoped I WAS making myself clear Thermomixer!!! Purely a professional relationship at conferences & golf days as you were usually outside my geographical territory!!!
-
We were Book Distributors for Lifetime Distributors (you know those cheap books you get in your work places ;)) and power sellers on eBay and a couple of other auction sites. Also had an Internet Marketing business at the same time. Have given both up WOO HOO ;D ;D and now am a TMX consultant along with DH who is training this month.
-
OMG JaneeZee, i NEED you! (seriously)
meagan, i am a trained high school art teacher too :D however have not taught since 94 lol
i've mostly been working in the disability field / community organisations for the past 15 years.
at the moment i am unemployed and having a hard time finding something new :( i can only work part time, and need to be fussy about my pay rate becuase of the costs of child care on top of just not wanting to do certain things, work in certain places etc. *sigh* it's not a good time to be looking atm...
-
ROFL at JZ and Thermomixer
JZ I am highly interested along with Karen - PM me!!
-
Maybe we should set up a private thread and have JZ receive payment for her professional advice ?
The photo in the Epicure was great because they hid my waist !!!! - love Eddie Jim the photographer - talk about silk purse from a sow's ear.
-
I work in birth, pregnancy and postnatal services. Doula (birth support) for past 5.5yrs and just finishing a midwifery degree after 5 years of study.
Now also a thermomix consultant which I am loving and having a bit of a whirlwind at the moment that needs to slow down just a little so I can focus on studying.
-
We are all in good hands with so many teachers here! lol I have so much admiration for all teachers - I think it's one of the most demanding and definitely most underpaid professions ;D
I am a Speech Pathologist (paediatric) ;D. Only part-time at the moment which suits me (leaves 3 days of the week to dedicate to cooking with the TMX :) :)).
-
Great topic you started Meagan - nice to read what people do, other than cook with their TMX
-
I am a Registered Nurse. After having nearly 5 years off with children, I went back last year. I am currently a Level 2 in Endoscopy which is a day procedure area where we do mainly gastroscopies and colonoscopies, in a private hospital. I am also studying - a Grad Dip in Clinical Teaching as teaching nursing is my passion. We also have our own business which I look after the accounts for.
-
Goodness Narelle, no wonder you wanted a Thermomix you've literally seen what happens to people who don't have one ;)
-
meagan, i am a trained high school art teacher too :D however have not taught since 94 lol
How funny :D
-
My qual is BEd (Phys Ed & Health) but moved to the Vet Industry to nurse horses and am now still in the same industry but working in finance & practice management. Love the industry but got too old to run our lame horses :'(
-
I'm a qualified horticulturist, but for the last 4.5 years I have been a SAHM. And I am not sure what I am going to do when she goes to school full time next year.
-
Very interesting group we are. I was an operating theatre sister in Sydney for many years before moving to Cairns 7 years ago. I do miss the surgery but don't miss the surgeons at all. ;D Now I read , cook and look after the old bugger DH.
LIfe is good.
Gretchen
-
Im a travel agent!! holiday anyone??
-
I have always worked in the clerical field, hotel/motel reception mainly, but my last job was as an assistant branch manager for a private health fund. I left there planning on having a break for a few months while my kids were little. That was 14 years ago and I haven't worked since, just love being home. My 'kids' are now almost 23 and almost 21 and still live at home :o ;D
-
baf, i always wondered why you were always travelling! now i know!!!
julie, i wish i was happy to be a SAHM! (and we could afford it) but i am not good at it :-[
-
Im a travel agent!! holiday anyone??
Yes!!!!
-
Wow! How diverse everyone's backgrounds are.
Janzee - Yep I need to chat to you too ;) ;) :D :D :D
Alioop - would love to chat to you too as Miss 3 stutters un and off, more when she's stressed - which started while I was away for work 11 months ago and she was exposed to a very stressful situation.
Well I work at a well known Winery in NE Vic, where I have been for 11 years :o :o (most of my working life). Through that time I worked in various areas of the winery in mostly an admin capacity, Front of House in the restaurant, admin in the Winery, Purchasing, and now in the Marketing area co-ordinating the process that each wine goes through to be released plus a few other bits and pieces.
-
I originally trained as a nurse working and was working with psychogeriatrics, before which I worked at the RSPCA for nearly ten years. I have been a SAHM for 19 years now, and am probably completely unemployable - which suits me quite well really!! I love to cook, cross stitch and read (and waste time on the computer) and when I'm not doing that I am driving/chasing around 3 teenagers, 17 steers, 6 chooks, 2 dogs and a horse.
Actually, my days are really fairly full!
-
ILB - I will try out the PM'ing later on tonight (have not tried that yet) when my DS and DD are cleaned, fed and put to bed! Would be happy to help :)
Ali
-
don't miss the surgeons at all
Oh yeah! One reason I dont want to work in main theatres!
Goodness Narelle, no wonder you wanted a Thermomix you've literally seen what happens to people who don't have one
Hehe lol, they are pretty empty by the time I see the innards! However, we do diagnose a significant number with cealiac disease so can see lots of opportunity for TMX!
ILB and Baf - me jehlus!
-
I have been a SAHM for over 2 years and have just been approved for another years leave - woo hoo! I'm not sure how I will ever get motivated to return to work (teaching - specialising in early childhood and special needs). I love being at home with the boys, pottering about in my garden and cooking up a storm with Thermie.
-
ILB - I will try out the PM'ing later on tonight (have not tried that yet) when my DS and DD are cleaned, fed and put to bed! Would be happy to help :)
Ali
Thanks Ali :-* :-*
Our GP suggested getting her to sing what she's saying - but have had no luck. She's head strong, determined and stubborn - sounds a bit like her mum ;) :D :D
-

Actually it would be great for HO to tailor some brouchures for different food intolerances/allergies etc. Which could be handed out with their info pack on Cealiac Disease etc. Visualising recipe comparisons or a couple of recipes to show how simple recipes or preping flours etc would be and price comparisons (purchased GF bread vs home made)..... gotta stop dreaming....
-
No you don't gotta stop dreaming - HO has gotta start taking on board great ideas and find ways to use them to promote their machine. Bianca should be able to do something along those lines and it would be good for sales team to increase their sales and PROFIT.

I went to uni to become a high school art teacher, which was my dream (like Meagan & Brazen!), but ended up changing to Graphic art. Worked full time as a graphic artist for a few years, then when no. 1 was born, worked from home part time. By the time no. 2 was 1 yr old, I'd had enough, and just focused on being a mum. (And I was also counselling and teaching new mums about breast feeding, sleep training, parenting, etc, which I still do.) Didn't have much time for anything else but looking after 4 little kids for a few years, but now the youngest is 6 and I have more time... Started doing some art tutoring and I teach a drawing class for kids, became a Creative Memories consultant, also sell Miessence, and now I'm a Thermomix consultant! (I'm giving up Creative Memories and keeping that just for a hobby now.) I also do volunteer work through my church with the youth - hence the youth camp this week that I'm cooking at! But my most important job now (as my DH keeps reminding me) is homeschooling my four kids! Life's busy - thank goodness for Thermomix! :D
-
hmmmm seems there's an untapped target market here.... hehehehehe ;D :o
-
I am a radiographer/sonographer but only work 2 days each week now. Also am a mother of 2 young children (almost 4yr old boy and 2 yr old girl) and also a thermomix consultant and also have designed and selling a modern cloth nappy (nappylicious).
Above all I love doing thermomix more than anything else as I love cooking and I love to show other people easier and healthier ways to cook.
-
I'm with you Trudy. I tell guests at demo's that Thermomix is my "hobby" - because I love it. It's not work. Love showing people, cooking with it, sharing an easier, quicker, healthier way of eating and meeting all the wonderful people too!
-
hmmmm seems there's an untapped target market here.... hehehehehe ;D :o
On selling TMX's to high school Art teachers LOL or for food allergy cook books?
-
high school art teachers and those who have trained to be LOL
-
Must be our love of creativity that makes cooking with a Thermomix so attractive! :D
-
When I left school in 1968 I moved to USA with my parents and in 1969 trained as a computer programmer - in the days of dedicated air-conditioned rooms. When we moved back to UK in 1971 there were very few computers around; I worked at the local police headquarters as a radio/telex operator. In 1972 I went to college and trained to be a Radio Officer in the Merchant Navy; I qualified in 1973 and then went to sea as a Radio Officer on large ore carriers. For the next ten years I worked on a variety of vessels from small container ships to supertankers and travelled all over the world. In 1980 I met my husband and we were married in July at Seoul South Korea then in Norfolk UK in September - just to make sure! We travelled together for the next few years moving to Cape Town South Africa in June 1981; next I became pregnant and had our first daughter in 1983 followed 17 months later with another. For two and a half years we bought and ran a small country hotel where we had an early PC for running our accounts and printing our menus. DH was not happy there so we sold and he went back to sea; we moved back to Cape Town and I started a computer consulting business in 1987, in 1991 I joined forces with a friend and we formed a company called Backup; in 1999 she emigrated and I am still running the business. last year a friend whose daughter is a Thermomix consultant in Australia received a TM31 from her; well - she told us about this gadget that could do everything including wash itself up I had to investigate. It was coincidental that Alice in JHB had just become the South African distributor, I called her and organised to buy a machine - as yet unseen! She flew done to Cape Town and did a demo at my house for about 12 people. I used that machine every day and since then decided very quickly to become a consultant. Like others on this site I consider selling Thermomixers a hobby - Just love doing demos and feel sorry for the people who say that it is too expensive and they don't need it.
I think that is more than info about my life never mind my day job..... ;D ;D
-
How many teachers are there on this forum :o ;D Well, I'm one too, but I don't teach art (absolutely dismal at it, but ended up marrying an artist/sculptor ;), just German and English to students of technical subjects like mechanical, electrical, IT and chemical engineering.
The range of professions - past and present - on this forum is amazing! I'm looking forward to hearing from other members what they do!
-
Actually, I think it's the opposite, we aren't very diverse at all! Look at the number of us in "caring" professions like nursing, medicine, teaching, caring for animals and plants...
-
lol, my job is totally different to everyone else. I am a junior graphic designer, and only finished my 4-year degree at uni last year and now work for a small local design firm in Canberra, but in the future I see myself moving into the field of Chinese medicine or naturotherapy. Also, my boyfriend and I dream about what we would really like to do, so we talk about opening a quaint little cafe that doubles as a bike restoration place. I love to cook for others, and he loves to build bikes for others.
This really inspires me: http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/lolas-ice-cream-sundaes-recipe.html (http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/lolas-ice-cream-sundaes-recipe.html)

Love that link Sim ;D but I love anything to do with icecream :-))
Bump anyone else going to share?
-
I am mummy to two little girls- Amelia is 2.5 and Lucy is 15m.
BC (before children) I was in pharmaceutical marketing- Brand manager of a well known antidepressant, and before that, diabetes care. My BSc is in Health Promotion though, and I probably should have been a dietician since I am really interested in health, nutrition and exercise for well-being :).
After having my TMX for a few weeks, I am tempted to become a consultant!
-
I studied a B. Ed. with my B. Psych (developmental psychology) but never worked as a registered teacher. I'm an at-home homeschooling Mum of six now (aged 5 to 15) and do a little freelance writing (parenting, gardening, sustainability matters, etc) and editing (articles, brochures, websites), alongside my online business selling mostly toys (wooden toys, fabric dolls, natural art and craft items, books, etc). My business is called Spiral Garden and it's a great creative outlet for me.
We also live on a small farm so I'm kept busy with planting orchards (or food forests-to-be!), gardens, milking the cow, chickens, ducks, horses and all that it entails...
-
You certainly fit a lot into your week Mama_bel! :o ???
-
I work for the Australian Government - Department of Human Services to be more precise. DHS is the portfolio that includes Centrelink, Child Support Agency, Medicare, Commonwealth Rehabilitation Services & Australian Hearing.
My father was a teacher & that is a very good reason why I am not.
I think teachers are the most overworked, underpaid, undervalued resources in Australian Society (& apparently in Qld our teachers are the second lowest paid in the country - says a lot for the SMART state doesn't it!)
My hat goes off to all of our teachers on this forum, I think teachers are great !!
(Disclaimer: I'm not actually wearing a hat at the moment, but it's the thought that counts).
-
.
My father was a teacher & that is a very good reason why I am not.
I loved this statement it says so much. We discouraged our daughter from becoming a teacher too. Now she's aiming to become a uni lecturer (in the future)-not too sure what the difference is. Maybe uni students are better behaved.
-
Hi!
I worked as a physio therapist, until we had our fist girl. I went back to work after a couple of months, until our second girl came. When she was 2 (by that time we had built a house an moved in) I started working again.
Three years ago I was pushed towards the other side of the medal, I had head surgery because of a tumor. That knocked me out of the work process, but gave me a new start in life.
I use to work with special needs children and adults with major neurological problems.
Now I´m home, managing this houshold ;D, I got the little white dog (in my avatar), to keep me trained an moving ;).
-
So glad to hear you are getting on well SP - a second chance at life indeed. Sounds like you have grabbed it with both hands. Good luck to you.
-
Yes - great work Salsa, So easy to succumb. Hope we can encourage you to make full use of your knowledge and gifts.
-
:-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Hugs from me too you saucy gal.

I hear you Susanne. :)
I used to work for a local government here in Tropical Qld - my life was all about rules and regulations. :P
Then 8yrs ago my eldest DS was diagnosed with a rare tumour with miniscule chances of survival. He has defied the odds in ways beyond comprehension and next month he will be 5 yrs in remission... not bad for a child who wasn't supposed to survive 2 yrs!
My second DS also has numerous developmental delays so I am convinced that SAHM is where I'm meant for be a little while yet... and I'm blessed beyond belief to know I can! 8)

I knew this forum was a very cohisive and supporting one. Now I know why. There are many survivors here. No doubt other cancer survivors like myself as well as carers and supporters. What a strong bunch we are .
Good on us!
Gretchen
-
I admire you all so much.Like Gretchen I have put my cancer behing me and am getting on with life. (except for all the check ups of course)
Congratulations SP and what a wonderful person you are Ceejay. SAHM is to be applauded. You can never get back those years. If people can manage it I do think it has lots of rewards.
You are all stars. :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

The nice thing about this forum is that everybody is helpful no matter what your style of cooking. No one is diminished or marginalised because they are a vegan, vegetarian , raw food addict, has Crohns, Celiac, or any other special dietary needs or wants. Gourmets, gourmands and gluttons are welcome. Those who are hopeless cooks are as welcome as our star chefs. The one thing we all have in common is our Thermomix and our willingness to share. We are all stars cookie.

Here Here!! :D

3 cheers for Gretchen - well said young lady. ;) ;)

As Gretchen said - everyone is helpful and nobody belittles or criticises others as seems to happen in some forums.
We are all learning and living the dream.
-

Totally agree with this, I love this forum. :D
-
Yeah,
I feel like a real survivor every night :).
I was lucky to have a non cancer turmor. But I´ll be working on neurological problems all my life. But that´s okay, I call it a good life!
Lots of energy to all who are fighting!
-
:-* :-* :-* :-* to us all.
-
Thought I might bump this thread and see if anybody else wanted to add to it, since we have had so many new members!!
-
I must live under a rock!! :-)) I totally missed this thread! What a good read it was too. Very interesting jobs and life experiences - I'm almost to embarrassed to say I'm a SAHM and a farmers wife but with those two jobs comes a whole range of diverse jobs - cook, baker, nurse, teacher, gardener, stylist, accountant, cleaner, party planner, milkmaid, Sociologists, diplomat, cheerleader, web designer, secretary, ecologist, vet, cattle groomer and handler, muster....exciting stuff eh? What's the saying? - A jack of all trades and a master of none. LOL :)
-
A stay at home mum is one of the most important jobs there is Nay ;D
-
I worked in the medical field for almost fifty years. I got my training in both X-ray and medical laboratory in the Army and when I got out I worked for one doctor for 8 years and in Jan '68 I went to work for an orthopedic surgeon and worked for him until January '07 when he passed away. I started as his x-ray tech but later was also office manager (he had 8 other employees) and transcriber (I could never find a transcriber who could type as rapidly or as accurately as I could. - have slowed some but still type over 100 wpm)
During the '70s and early '80s I also worked part time as a personal chef and later did catering and contract baking (the reason I had a certified kitchen) until 2004 it got to be too much for me, after I fractured a vertebra in my low back.
-
this has been a great read, what a lovely bunch of people!
i am a sahm to 2 boys 2.5 and 4 months. i have just finished my tm consultant training so my new adventure is just beginning and love that i dont have to sacrifice being a sahm to get out and work again.
before the boys came along i was a dispensary technician and did a couple of years in pharmacy. i also did some stints in reception mainly medical reception and was a practice manager for a small drs surgery for a couple of years.
but by far being a sahm is the most rewarding!
-
I agree - being a SAHM is the most important job there is!! You have to be multi-talented, don't you Nay-Nay! What with homeschooling and cooking and all, I really couldn't have a 'normal' job, so it's great to be able to make a little extra money as a TMX consultant, doing hours that suit our family. :)
-
i am one who is NOT cut out to be a SAHM 8) can cope with a couple of days a week but anymore and i hate it. i am not good at it either lol
-
I am a SAHM but have moments when I think I would like to go to back to work for a little sanity. The sad thing is that I'm an early childhood and special needs teacher! Aggghhhhhh!!!:)
-
I'm a relief teacher at my children's school. As it's a large school I get quite a lot of work, averaging 2 or 3 days a week.
In term 3 I'm already booked for a 4 week contract, so I'm looking forward to this. Relieving allows me to get stuff done at home & remain involved in teaching, which I love. I have lots of variety at school, get to know all the children & have minimal programming, & no reports, meetings or after school commitments! I love it.
-
I am a cytologist. Which is a pathology scientist. In our department (cytology) we look at pap smears, fine needle biopsy and fluid specimens. So looking down the microscope all day.
-
Well i have allways been a SAHM, and I have loved it. There is allways some thing diffrent to do.
My kids left home and I missed them so much I took on Fostering children. So now we have 4 little indigenous under four.
who we have had for 2 yrs last Dec.
We were told the other week that they could stay with us until they are 18.( Long Term Care)
So that means i will be umm bloody old....57 now. So this is the reason we bought Therm so the children could eat healthy.
As they did not have a great start in life
Gee they keep you young, but they love all the sorbets and home cooking, We are alos on a small farm with cows, and we grow grain
suzanna
-
Wow suzanna, that's a big ask - 4 under 4! :o
Lovely to read about everyone. I'm amazed at how many of us are in the teaching and medical professions.
I'm a teacher too. I have mainly taught in our little Primary School and have also taught for a term in a high school teaching Drama and English. I spent a couple of years teaching Literacy and Maths at TAFE and am now a relief teacher at our school. I'm also getting a little school choir going. I've sung for years and was in a large choir, then started my own choir here which ran for two years until the only men in the choir left town!
I now run my own business making and selling skin and hair care products (called Skinflint because it's high quality products at reasonable prices).
I'm also a Local Govt Councillor and have been on Council for 8 years. I'm a Justice of the Peace too!
Over the years I've been a consultant for (taking a big breath):
Amway
Neways
Some food company whose name escapes me
Creative Memories
Trinature
Melaleuca
I was VERY tempted to become a TMX consultant, but I'm too busy!
Well, that's me! Next....
-
meganjane - very very interesting! Do you ever melt soy wax in TMX for your soy melts for the oil burner?? I have made them using the TMX - (just for our own use and presents.) :)
-
As said before I'm a teacher too. Retired now, very occasional relief.
-
I'm a working mum to two kids, two fur-kids, a DH and we also have DH's dad in the granny flat next door.
I've been in the Royal Australian Air Force almost 22years ( a life time!!). First as a Signals Operator and then as an Airborne Electronics Analyst (flying in the back-end of the P3C maritime patrol aircraft).
Still 'in' but possibly about to become a SAHM due to DH's new job opportunity. Not sure yet.
??? :-\ >:( ??? Just want to KNOW already!!!!
-
Wow KL, that's so interesting! Hope you find out soon!!
Nay, I don't use my TMX for anything but food. I have a workshop for my products and use a bains marie for melting my soy wax. My workshop smells divine when I walk in - a combination of soap, reed diffusers and soy melts!!
-
I am a midwife in a birth centre so see women through the whole kit and kaboodle, pregnancy, labour and birth and post baby. I absolutely love my job, even when l am exhausted by it. Although Nay-nay's descriptiion of her life sounds very close to my ideal.
-
My last full time job was as Registrar at a private school in the Western suburbs of Melbourne. In fact the very school that our Gold champion Lydia attended . Before that I had taught all levels, from prep to tertiary, and across all systems, and across 6 disciplines.
The reason for this is that I trained as a Furniture Designer. And then later did an Arts degree at Melb Uni. I chose to work in schools as my DH was a teacher and we had 2 school aged children. Some of the more interesting aspects of my job were that I initiated an overseas program for our school. School exchanges and overseas students who came to live with Australian families most often from our school, and attended our school. When I retired, I was invited by the school to handle special projects. One day a week I investigated and then set up an Equestrian Program that could be part of year 11 and 12 course. I also set up a flying course for year 10 and 11 students.
I loved the interaction with the students, but spent most of my time in administration. I was fortunate, in that the time at this school, I had a very supportive headmaster. However in the end the lack of any break from work, ( I would travel overseas during school hols. to visit the parents of the students from overseas).meant I got tired. I also had an aging mother who required help.
This is just the last few years, but there you are another teacher! :-)) :-)) :-))
-
You girls are knocking me out with your high profile jobs - what a clever group of people on this forum.
Just mentioned KL's occupation to DH (who loves anything to do with planes, ships etc) and he straightaway said she must be from SA as this is where the Orions are based. He'd love to be married to someone like you KL - I'm not at all interested when he yabbers on about anything to do with the war, planes, air-craft carriers and the like. :-)) :-))
-
Gosh Chookie - are you taking full responsibility for the Gold medal ? ;D ;D ;D
-
Wish I could, but I think her mum deserves a little corner.
-
Gosh - all of you are amazing! Thank you for sharing.
I'm a SAHM (love it most of the time!), and about to start a new job teaching kids about frogs and their habitats. I am very excited about starting next week.
For all the SAHMs out there, here's a link to a publication about SAHMs, that I was involved with a couple of years ago. I'm on the cover too, so should I put cover girl on the list as well?

JudyDawn..... I had a little jaded giggle at your DH's expense. ;D ;D
I couldn't think of anything WORSE than someone rabbitting on about aircraft all day!! Sad, but true. All I ever wanted to know was if the bludi thing was serviceable enough to stay in the sky!!!
The most technical I ever got wrt aircraft was the 'suck - squeeze - bang - blow' theory of how an engine actually works.
The rest has faded in the dim recesses of my memory...... ;) ;) :-))
(don't panic Australia...... the good guys are still out there doing the job!!!)

Hey All,
Although I am currently a Project Manager in Information Technology, I prefer to just call myself a Computer Programmer, as that is my true calling. Unfortunately, in the public service, if you want a promotion, you have to move into a management role.
However, we moved west from brisbane 2 years ago, and I'm desperately trying to find ANY job in the local area that will pay the bills, as I hate living away from the family all week. That's the reason we moved rural after all, to get better quality of life together. Unfortunately, I.T. and the bush don't really go well together, all I.T. work tends to be centralised. Working as an independent in something like web design etc is possible, but it is a hugely competitive market since you are competing with the whole world. I'm the type who likes a nice dependable income so I don't have to stress about where the next mortgage payment is coming from.
Unfortunately, pay rates in the bush are horrible as well. So anything I have to look for in rural needs to be a couple levels higher than what we could survive on in Brisbane. My DW is a SAHM and we have two boys, one with ADHD and Aspergers Syndrome, who has just started school. That takes a huge commitment of time and emotional resources, so the option of both of us working in out for now.
My dream is to run my own business from home. I've made several attempts part-time, but nothing has panned out yet. There has been talk of redundancies in my job for about 4 months now that I'm holding out for, but it's wishful thinking I think. I'ma bit young to retire yet. If I did get one, maybe I could quit and become a Thermomix consultant :)
Russell.

Good plan, Russel!! Have you got a TMX yet? I saw your post saying you were thinking about it, wondered if you'd 'succumbed'!!

In my head, not yet, in my heart, yes. Wonder why will win?

My most recent position was as Senior Princess in the Pimlico Palace...a position I still hold (creating the odd hand made toy, bag or cothing pieces in sweaty but not sweat shop conditions!) and because I am an Occupational Therapist I know it is important to have a role......and what better than Senior Princess.
On the side I am a SAHM who is sometimes encouraged out the door to work and get a real job. I love watching my own kids grow and develop. If I went back to work I couldn't send my work mates to time out - though I have found toddler tactics an amazing asset in workplaces. I love cooking food - generally and of course with my thermomix ;).
I'm soon to join my man (spanner) as a consultant. Maybe I could combine roles and get a thermomix classed as an essential aid on the rehab schemes.

Wendy B, lol I just bought from you when you had your yearly sale :-)
I have a history in customer service and also photography. Started taking pic and getting paid around the age 15. I worked as a media photographer for a couple of yrs and done a handful of weddings ( I hate doing weddings), my passion is people, animals, nature and fine art.
I only qualifed as a photographer a couple of yrs ago, even though I had worked in the industry and won a handful of awards. I haven't worked in the industry for many yrs. Once I studied it and was encouraged to join appa (photographic groups etc) I found that although I love been a photographer, I am not a competitive person and am not interested in the nature of the industry.
I am a nearly qualified graphic arts. Have studied lots in the arts area and was encouraged to become a jewelery designer.
In recent yrs I have enjoyed labouring work, getting my hands dirty and doing gardening, mundane sort of work. Although it is rather boring I come home sweaty and stinky, but love it. I have weight issues and prefer to work physical jobs and get paid for working out lol instead of paying a gym.
I am currently a SAHM/personal taxi driver to 3 children (DD 10, DS 6 and DD 4.5 m). I would love to finish getting my unrestricted HR licence this yr and hopefully be driving trucks by Xmas (one can dream).

I have just discovered this thread - what a wonderful, interesting, strong, talented and creative group of people you all are! I thoroughly enjoy reading through all the posts. I take my hat off to all you SAHM's - you do such an important and wonderful job .........I work full-time and my husband is a SAHD. When each of my kids were born, I took about 9 months off work, and a bit like brazen said, didnt really enjoy it, and I wasnt particularly good at it either. But I have done it for long enough to know how challenging it can be - and with all the other things you do in addition, you are amazing!
-
:) At the moment i am a SAHM, but that will change in January.
I have always had retail businesses in Cairns, then merchandising / sales rep ect.
Then i studied , and i am a remedial massage therapist. I also do reiki aswell. (when i have the time)
Now we are going to expand our irrigation business into Yungaburra, and i will work school hours, while also running our office from home.

I was a sales rep for many years - in Veterinary products which is where I met Thermomixer -and then human natural medicines.
Well I'm another one from the veterinary industry too! We are well represented here! Veterinary Nurse turned to Veterinary Wholesale company and now full time Mum to 4 year old and 1 year old but DESPERATE for something to get my brain and social skills going again. Conversations with children can only be stimulating to a certain degree and I have well and truly reached that point.
Looked into TMX consulting but couldn't see it working around my children and husbands schedule just now. maybe one day.......
-
I am a hairdresser by trade, and worked in the salon for 10 years before I left to have my babies.
I lost my enthusiasm for it, and never went back.
I did price and sell jewellery at a second hand dealers (which I loved.......jewellery being another passion besides cooking) for a period of time.
Today hubby and I have our own business in rural services.
Pasture renovation, fencing, making hay etc.......lots of hours with hubby on a tractor, and me doing the paperwork ;)
-
I'm a student teacher and SAHM. Although there isn't much Staying at Home in it at the moment. :-)
I'm studying Secondary Education majoring in Senior Mathematics and Home Economics.
-
Very interesting thread- I am now a SAHM but previously a senior sales manager in pharmaceuticals.
I have a PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology.... and my dream job would be to work with Heston Blumenthal in his development kitchen! ;D
Not sure yet about real life in 2 hrs time though ???
-
Goodness me we have some smart cookies on this forum..............
I'm with Brazen, I admire you SAHM's - I think I would've committed infanticide if I'd stayed at home with my little darling. Thank goodness he grew up & left home :D
Now of course I miss him like crazy - but he's fun to hang out with now!!!!
-
I'm a SAHM. I love being around for my kids (nearly 9, 7 and 3) even if they drive me insane sometimes, lol, looking forward to dd3 going to preschool 2 days next year and having some me time.
Well a WAHM as I run my own business - mostly I'm a fibre artist - I dye yarn, hand spin yarn and knit. Though I also do some beading and other stuff and run an internet store selling mine and other WAHM products and yarn supplies.
Prior to having kids (and a bit since) I was a web developer, starting in the early days of the www. (mostly worked in investment banking and dot.com's)
Have done loads of other things previously, mostly advertising, television production, was a croupier (black jack and roulette dealer) for a few years and a number of other things.

Good to catch up on this thread again! Wow! Some very clever and versatile members here.
Hestonfan, you're also a Gwen Stefani fan by the look of your avatar.
Zan, you must have an amazing headful of knowledge of computers and the web having started so early in the piece with web development.
I'd love to pick both your brains!
Maddy, where abouts do you run your business? My DH has been on the tractor doing contract hay baling lately too.

We're Geelong way, in the Buckley district (close to Winchelsea). Hubby does travel around though. Because of the rural fencing side of things, he picks up all the hay and pasture work to boot. Keeps him very busy ;)
-
Megan, don't know if I have a headful of knowledge of anything, lol, think the kids fried my brain. But yes have an ok computer knowledge and know html just as well as I know English (I remember the tedium of hand coding)

:D I think wine has pickled mine!

LOL Megan, maybe that's the problem then, but it's easier to blame the kids, lol.

Courton was asking where this thread was so I am bumping it for all the newcomers. I daresay some people are doing different things today than they were 3 yrs ago.
-
Thanks JD! I knew someone far more capable with the forum than I would come to the rescue. I will try to delete the other thread.
-
Well I will start this thread by saying that I am a 'sandwich' generation person. Dd in final year school and parents now living with us in a semi- separate living quarters since they are ailing. On the cooking front the TMX gets used a lot since someone or other will enjoy my experimental dishes. I work part time...some times.
-
I've done it for you Courton.

And previously (and hopefully currently) a disability support worker and career for the elderly. :)
-
My 'baby' is now 18 years old so I'm working full time as a GP. Love to cook as a sanity saver (evidence of something constructive, and yummy). Hats off to all of you for your varied and inspirational stories😊
-
Very interesting read. So many talented forum members.
I currently have 2 paid jobs and 1 unpaid.
I work for an Insurance company 2 days a week. Been there for 22 years now. Boy that makes me feel old.
I have been a Training Consultant and also Manager in the past when we lived in Sydney.
9 years ago we moved to the country. I am now a Customer Service Consultant at the local office.
Last year DH & I purchased a business and I work there 3 days a week (9-3). We sell stock feed, pet food, trailers, trailer parts and horse floats. DH also runs his mechanical business there too.
My unpaid job us 24/7 as cook, cleaner, taxi, teacher, counsellor and wife.
-
I am a SAHM - before that (part time since I was 12 yrs old, full time after I left school til I got married) I worked in a factory making... confectionery! :o
Any wonder I'm not a sweet tooth?!
-
Since I last posted here early in 2010, I've gone from being a relief teacher 2 or 3 days a week, to teaching full time since term 3 2010. I love it, but find my TMX use has declined quite a bit. I need quick & easy things to cook, but I can't seem to get myself organised. When I get home from school I just don't want to fuss. After many years of practice I'm still not very good at cooking!
My eldest 3 children are married, so I only have 3 children at home now, the youngest being 13. I would be feeling a bit obsolete if I wasn't working LOL.
-
I currently run my own little business, a school canteen, and yes, of COURSE it has a tmx !
-
I'm an RN in a surgical ward and I love it most of the time. I left high school and went straight and did my training.
I can't do anything else, don't know how to work a cash register and I only type at about 6 words a minute.
I applied about 14 times for MacDonalds when I wanted a change about 8 years ago.
I think the trouble was in applying online. They just couldn't tell what a "Do You Want Fries With That" sort of girl I am.

I think you had a lucky escape there McMich! I couldn't image you working at Macca's.
My job is administration manager at a small Solicitor's office. I mainly do accounting and some HR/office management stuff. The law firm I work at deals mainly with family law, so unfortunately most of our clients are going through rough times (divorce, property settlements, children's custody etc). It certainly gives you a reality check and makes you appreciate your own life and OH a bit more.
I work a full-time job in 4 days, which means 4 long days of work but then I get every Friday off to do whatever I want. This normally means washing, cleaning, shopping, cooking and generally pottering around at home - but I love it and I love being at home.
-
I work as the office manager for an equine vet practice. I love it! :)
-
What a fantastic thread! It's wonderful to see the diversity of the members of this forum. And there are so many people in caring professions! I love it! You are all fantastic :-* :-* :-*
I am yet to reach the "professional" stage. I am currently just a cleaner, but I'm studying Nutritional Medicine through a natural therapies college, and I'm also undertaking a Personal Training course. So hopefully I'll have some letters after my name one day! :D
-
What a fascinating thread this is. I love reading about what everyone has done.
For many years, I was a SAHM which I absolutely loved. It meant I was able to be home for my 3 children, but at the same time volunteer at their school. I started helping with reading, taught religious ed. joined mother's club and school council. At the same time, I taught sunday school, became a Brownie/Guide leader and was secretary to the local Scout group.
Once the children began their university studies, I opened a furniture store and ran that for many years till ill health finally caught up with me (I have MS) and had to cut my working hours. My DH gave up his job, and now runs the furniture store full time so I can stay home. I still do the accounts from home, and drop into the shop occasionally to help out at busy times or to train staff.
I'm loving being home, playing with my three grandchildren, and cooking. Life doesn't get any better than this :-\

Amy there is no such word as 'Just a cleaner', every job is important no matter the title. A SAHM, a lawyer a cleaner, landscaper a doctor or the pope, doesn't matter cause they are all important. :)

Worked for Westpac in almost every capacity until starting maternity leave in 2005. Three children later I resigned in November 2011 after almost 6.5yrs mat leave.
I work 2 days a week in our caryard and the rest of the week is spent either at school assisting or at home with the 2 younger ones.

Was that at the Peek Freans Factory Uni?

I was a secretary after school and business college then got married and was a SAHM until the last few years, I have been working part time in a Solicitors office. On the 2nd July I start full time work for the first time in over 20 years I hope I survive, I will be a Receptionist.
-
I currently a SAHM to two boys (6 & 2), previously worked as a medical receptionist have been trying to get back into health administration but finding it very difficult so have just signed up as a TM consultant, I start selling next week :)
-
Hi Michelle, I think you're better off not working at MacDonald's.
I worked for one the the four banks for many years and for the last twenty years I was a SAHM for our two children. Our young people are now 25 and 26 and have left home to follow their carriers. I did some administrative work in recent years but now I like being at home with DH who has retired recently. We both like travelling mainly to Europe and Asia. Besides travelling we're busy renovating our house and of course we're getting a new kitchen. I can't wait until the renos are finished :) because at the moment we're living in two rooms. :)
-
Wow what an interesting read. Both mine and DH's occupations have been covered in the earlier parts of this thread as well(!). I'm a paediatric Speech Pathologist (part time/part time SAHM), and we have our own business Lifetime Distributors which my husband runs. I will be full time at home in October as baby no. 3 due then-very exciting.
-
Mine's pretty boring - financial analyst for an IT company (the big blue one). I work part-time, have done for about 8 years, constantly fending off questions about when i will return to full time work (hopefully never but I can't tell them that!) Previously I've worked in hospitality & retail.
-
I am a sole trader/web designer and have my own home based business which I've been running since 2004. Prior to this I had a variety of mostly admin based type of jobs (secretary, admin manager, quality manager), plus some time at home raising 2 kids (whom have recently flown the coop). :-))

I use to work at a psychiatric unit in Ashfield. Was always fascinated with the clock on the Peek Freans building.

What a fascinating read this thread is. BC I was a technical communicator working in documentation, training and project management areas (so now you all know why I edit my posts so much ;D ;D ;D). Now I'm just a tech writer in my spare time and wife, mum, cook, cleaner, chauffeur, counsellor, gardener, mender, etc etc etc most of the time :D
-
What a great thread Meagan. Due to time constraints, I only read the first few pages but how very diverse and interesting our paths have been. I started my career as a psychologist working with children with challenging behaviours but didn't enjoy it very much so went back to uni and am now a property development analyst. I have a nearly-three year old boy, work part-time and enjoy spending time with my DS very much. Just wish there was more time in the day.
-
I will be starting my role as a teacher on Tuesday. I'm going to be teaching VCAL at a school for kids who were disengaged with school. It's exactly what I hoped to do when I did my graduate diploma of education. I just hope that I'm right about my vocation and give them the support that I always believed I could. I have no idea how to begin, but I look forward to it.

Hope it all goes well for you Sarah. Thanks for bumping this thread too. I have had a lovely time reading through it again.

Sarah, best wishes in what will be a very demanding job. I am sure your straight forward approach will be just what is needed.

Goodluck Sarah.
This is a great thread to read through. We have a clever bunch of mixers!

Best wishes for the new job Sarah. Your enthusiasm will help no end. Don't be put off by the horrid times and always ask for help if you need it, from those who you feel will help you. Do let us know how it goes.

Good luck in your new job Sarah. :)

Good luck Sarah.

Wishing you the best of luck on Tuesday Sarah.

All the best for Tuesday Sarah.

I can't believe, after all these years of being on the forum, that I hadn't seen this thread. What an amazing mix of people and personalities. It was great to see some of the 'old' members' posts as well.
My background is in admin, working in NZ, Australia, Wales, England, Scotland and Hong Kong. For the past 20 years my DH (a violin maker) and I had our own shops in Melbourne - we did have two but closed one last year so it is shop singular now (thank goodness)! I do everything in the office as well as attending to customers in the shop and sending out web orders. Long, hard hours ... roll on retirement! Couldn't do any other job now as too entrenched in being my own boss and doing things MY way :-))
-
I'm the same Marina. Never seen this thread either.
-
Well, I wanted to let people know, but thought u should make sure it was in the right thread, so went searching. It was a good first day. I'll be working Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Sarah, sounds perfect.
