A question re feeding SD starter
« on: July 07, 2019, 09:13:21 am »
When you feed your SD starter do you weigh the water and flour? Eg 20g of each.
OR
Do you add an equal measure of water and flour. Eg a tablespoon of each.

My rye starter I have been weighing and my Chookie one using equal measures.  I think I should have been weighing both. 🥺🥺

Cookie, just saw this post today.
I don’t weigh or measure flour or water.  I just tip in water first and then add flour , mix and add more until it looks ok.  Can’t tell people to do this as they are frightened of messing it up.   My jar is very large ( contains 8/10 cups) and I often add a cup of each water then flour.
I decide when it is ready to use by the smell.  If it smells ok but looks flat.  I add about a tablespoon of flour.  This little feed seems to brighten it up.
I don’t think it really matter if you weigh or measure.  Just trust your judgement.
I am fairly happy with what I make but always striving to get better.
I really enjoy looking at the loaves you make.
