Has anyone ever made pop tarts?
« on: April 06, 2012, 04:11:25 am »
A friend posted in Facebook this morning that she introduced her kids to pop tarts and she commented on how sugary they are. As my kids react to too much sugar and we use almost exclusive rapadura I wondered if I could make my own.

Any suggestions?

About to go and trawl google to see what I can find.

there is heaps of recipes on google  :o :o I think I may have a look too and perhaps introduce my kids to a healthier version as they have never ever had them. Could be a nice weekend treat  :D

I tried the original many, many years ago and didn't like them at all. Home made would be nice.

Having grown up with them I have to ask wy you would want to introduce your children to pop tarts.  ???  Maybe if you could make some sort of healthy home made version but i don't think there is anything natural about the original store bought kind.

Can't say I have ever tried them, I have seen them and I think my mum may have brought them when I was young. But I couldn't imagine I would have ever tried them as they don't entertain me at all. Yuck.

There is a recipe and demo on youtube. It doesn't use much sugar - just 1 tlbsp but oooh the butter. My heart nearly stopped just looking at it. 500gms of butter. The filling was strawberry jam and diced strawberries. I think I will be giving this recipe a go and trying a pastry with a little (maybe a lot) less butter. The beauty of these is that you bake them from from the freezer.
For the recipe go to youtube and type in homemade pop tarts.

I'm with Dashingden on this one.  I spent ten of my formstive years in the US where pop tarts were a breakfast staple.  Definitely didn't think my children needed to be introduced to them! A home made version would probably be altogether different, however!

They would be something I would make, probably in miniature as a morning tea snack and not for breakfast. We do very little "gratuitous sugar" here as my kids get too hyped up but homemade bikkies or mini pop tarts with rapadura appeals to me. And I also love the challenge of trying to make things rather than buying them. I would never buy pop tarts. Yuk! lol I'd also like to share the recipes with my friend who bought them for her kids.

I had a squizz on google and found a few and thanks CC I will look up the links to breakfast bars. Thank you  :)

The bought ones would never darken my trolley let alone make it into my house lol but one morning a week (on the weekend) we have a treat breakfast (though it is generally still rather healthy lol) generally it is along the lines of pancakes, waffles etc and was thinking that home made pop tarts would be something for a change so will be giving these a go at some point.  :D

I didn't even know you could still buy pop tarts - it's been years since I even heard of them.  Shows how much time I spend browsing those particular aisles in supermarkets.
