Title: Thermomix ingredient wish list - comparing notes
Post by: cecilia on May 01, 2012, 03:36:34 pm
I have a few things on the wish list now that I've heard are really good and would be great to have on hand, but I've never actually found in the shops I frequent.

Dulse
Walnut oil
Coconut oil
Rapadura sugar

I found some galangal, which was an ingredient I'd never heard of in the Asian cookbook, but I still haven't made up whatever it was I bought it for, as I'm missing other exotic things.  *Sigh!*

What are yours as I'm sure I'd love to get some too.  It's so exciting getting out of one's comfort zone.  At least having the chance to talk about the little challenges along the way here, amongst more experienced Thermomixers, one doesn't need to remain ignorant in the foodie set.

Where do you live, Cecilia?  Most good health food shops should stock everything on your list.  If not, I can get these things for you and post them off to you.

I don't really have a wish list, I think I've got all the ingredients I need, however, a new TMX bowl, a couple of extra hours in the day and a good nights sleep would be welcome.

Cecilia I know these ingredients are available in a health food shop in Launceston, so I would think you could get them in Hobart as well.

Wish list for me?
Kids that are all well (for today anyway)
A maid , a Gardner, a pool boy with big muscles (not that I have a pool ) :)
Not sure what else lol ;D

Oh yes, Dede, I think I'll expand my wish list to include your maid, gardener and pool boy ...... I can but dream!  My cleaning lady has, sadly, got cancer and I do miss her cheery happy smile the help she used to give us around the house.

I am doing better on the ingredient front since my trip to the west.  Brought home all the ingredients on my wish list except walnut oil, plus a few others.  The sniffer dog got excited and his minder thought the dog liked the smell of the coconut oil.  :)

i would love to infuse my own oil with a real truffle, one day  :)

There is no relationship between truffle, truffle aroma and a fresh truffle. However, it does tend to come as a shock to some that the truffle oil you see in your local delicatessen or fine food shop is not made from real truffles at all, but from synthetic flavorings, actually nature identical flavorings that have been determined to exist in natural truffles

I love fresh truffles and dislike intensely the artificially flavored truffle oil.   :-[

They are yummy Amy but no connection to the truffles Uni mentioned
They are an expensive fungi that grow underground only in certain climates and conditions.
They are grown here in WA in manjimup as well as other areas in Australia and of course in Italy and France.
delicious :)

Saffron is lovely Amy.
You can buy a small container in the supermarket and only use a few threads each time.

You won't waste it Amy :)
Just soak  a few strands in warm water then add. As well as the subtle flavours it adds colour especially to rice.  ;D

Managed to get 6 bottles of Moet from Dan Murphys in Albany for $19 a bottle just before Christmas. Noticed the error and took it to the checkout.
Lots of customers watching and grabbed the rest when I was only charged the $19. I did tell the checkout chap that it had to be a mistake.  They had been selling it for $85. All he said that there were quite often errors and that he had to charge what was marked so everytime I go there now have a really good look.

AMY, next time you come to Barker and have time to stay with your gran, you will have to come here and we can do some cooking. I have truffle oil, proper stuff from Solomans in Albany, a little with scrambled eggs is great. Have some saffron too.

Veuve is my fav, I try & buy a case when its at a good price, then try & spread it over months & months & months. I have a bottle in the outside fridge, dh bought it for my birthday in feb. I think its time to open it soon, I have left it in the brown bag he gave it to me so I am not tempted. As you can see he is not into wrapping, LOL

Personally i have found alot of the big name champagne houses dont live up to their price tag.. My,fav champagne is a small family operation .. Their champagnes are lovely and beat the commun houses hands down imo..

Have any of u tried white truffles.. More intense flavour.. Alot more expensive than its black cousin but no shelf life...one of the areas they are found is in san miniato in italy of course where we visited last year but it was not the season for them so you couldnt taste any of it fresh just shavings on pasta etc.. Ohand u cant cook it either...people enjoy the intensity of it but chefs dont use it as much as the black truffle as its just not as versatile..

Oh and the champagne is at.. http://www.champagne-olivier-pereetfils.com/home/spip.php?rubrique23

I just found they have a new site and its also in english.. They are one of the independant producers and well known champagne families of the region and its a four generation family run affair..i first tasted it as a gift from one,of my husbands companies and kept enjoying it year after year and severalfriends and family also ordered regularly... We will be looking at ordering a few boxes once settled inour own place.. Their champagnes are lovely..i adore their pink champagne..esquisite! Dont know if its possible though or worth it with aussie import taxes.. If i remember it was 44 percent on alcohol.. Pfffttt  will have to wait and see ..if you have a receipt a,d can buy them cheap enough it is still worth it as alcohol is so over priced in oz for anything decent..
