I'm seriously considering taking a second job. As you may know I work from home as a picture framer which is great but I will never retire on what I bring in. So I'm considering taking a second job doing shift work on a weekend, probably only one shift a week (maybe two)
I just don't know if I should or not.
There is a position coming up at a place I used to work for several years ago in group homes working with adults with intellectual disabilities.
What do ya think?
I don't know. ?
-
Dede what does your family think? Would they be supportive? Could this make a positive difference to your lifestyle now and in terms of the future? Would it be damaging to your family?
I started work two shifts a week when my children were very small. Nursing shifts, any shifts over any days. I gradually built up to 8+ a fortnight. I only went back to work when my mother found out we usually had $30 a month left over to live on. One bad month it was $7. She said no way would she stay home and starve. She and my MIL looked after the children through the week and DH on weekends.
On reflection, it was the absolute best thing I could have done. The children and their father have a great relationship (I do as well!). They learnt to cook early, help around the house, be thoughtful, and from 14yrs old looked after their washing and ironing. We actually became comfortable finacially and could afford to holiday etc. My working took pressure of us financially and also I enjoyed the work. I didn't go full time to my children left home.
Lots of things to think through before you decide. Make sure you wouldn't be taking on too much. Good luck with whatever you decide Dede ;D
-
Thanks ElleG,
With a big family the income we are on is stretched to the limit most weeks and I think just a little extra $$ would be very handy.
The only problem is I would only be able to work weekends when DH is about to look after the little ones. The shift that would suit me best would be either 7am -12pm or 3pm- to 11pm but followed by a sleep over until 7am.
I just spoke to DH who isn't too keen on the idea but said he will think it over.
It's a big decision to make, but I think sometimes in life we need to make some sacrifices. And I am qualified to work in this field.
If I was going to apply for this position I would need to have my application in by the end of next week.
-
Dede I think it is great! I would go for it.
I work 3 days a week and find that is a great balance for our family. I would start with one shift a week and then work out how to organize the family around that. If it's going great then add the second shift. I'm sure the extra money will be so useful but it's also nice to get out of the house sometimes and talk to people that you wouldn't normally.
-
I can also do shift work and love the 3-11pm shift. It gives you a chance to go to kids activities, have a nice big family lunch and then go to work. DH and the kids can then have leftovers for dinner to make it easier on him.
-
I really don't think it would be that much of an impact on us too much. Usually weekends are pretty quiet anyway. I do my housework and framing etc during the week. And Sunday mornings I take the kids to do their paper run, Sunday morning I do cooking (but can do that Saturday as well)
I'm putting thought into what impact it will or won't make.
Guess I should do a list of pros and cons.
-
Good luck with whatever you decide Mandi. A second income would make life so much easier for you and as the kids have had to pull their weight recently with your leg being in plaster, they should now be used to having to do extra chores. Strike whilst the iron is hot ;D
-
I am an RN and found weekend work a real help when my children were young -
having said that I missed out on sport events etc. I don't think my children are any worse off because one of us
was always there. It doesn't matter what you decide dede - there is always mother guilt.
-
Oh there for a while I forgot about my leg problems. I still need to have the second leg done. Although I am hoping for a walking boot which shouldn't impact on work too much (I hope)
Well I would really like to go back to work (even if only once a week )
Just have to convince DH that I can do it without to much impact on the family. And I do really think it would be good for him to spend more time with the kids. The older 3 don't need looking after so much, just the 2 youngest.
-
Looks like you have come up with the answer dede. You want at least one days work, DH to have the time with the kids.
Little impact on family life.
Do you have a job in mind that fills this criteria?
-
Dede, also meant to say this would be your third job! Not second. And also even though I enjoyed work I was chronically tired for years..
And I only had 2 kids.
Good luck! I just read you response, we were writing at the same time. It was the $$ that spoke to us. Loud and clear.
Yes some times we have to work when we really don't want to. At least it is in your field and the companionship of your workmates is usually enjoyable.
-
Another thing to keep in mind and was very attractive to me...at least you get a meal break when you do paid work.
-
I do Michelle. But I have to get the job first. I'm hoping I would have a good chance as I have lots of years experience, and they are employing several people for casual positions.
I rang them today and had a Talk to HR and she said there is plenty of work available.
My application letter will state that I'm only available weekends (that might be a down fall?)
Gee I better blow the dust off my resume and update it. Been awhile since I have applied for a job :)
-
ElleG I guess your right being 3rd job, Mother first, Picture Framer second and RSO (Residential Support Officer) third. (if I get the job) ;)
-
Dede, with your experience you will have no problems securing a position. There are a lot of carers that have been there, done that and don't want weekends. Well at least in NSW. Enthusiasm, willingness and a love for what you do are paramount in your industry.
-
I hope it will be nice and simple Michelle and they offer me some work. Biggest problem being my availability I guess. 14 years ago this group had 6 group homes (I wonder how many they have now?)
-
Weekends are only attractive to mums with young kids. I'm 52 and myself and my co-workers want to be off weekends. You certainly have a weekend place to fill. If you want this position you've got it.
-
Don't know what happened there. Have been trying to post a photo for Maddy and it turned up here.
-
Let me know when you start dede.
-
Lol, sometimes these computers do strange things. There's a gremlin hiding somewhere.
Will keep you posted on the third job thing. I will leave DH to mull it over for a few hours.
-
Dede, have you told your husband that you want to go back to work for yourself and not just the money?
Why don't you discuss with your husband a period of time that you can give it a try and then review - say after 3 months. If it's really not working out for the whole family then you can always resign.
I wouldn't worry too much about availability at this stage - you are happy to work long shifts on a weekend which is a plus. But I think employers can always workaround flexibility issues if they find someone who is reliable and responsible and competent at their job.
-
No not really Snappy, didn't get much of a chance as when I mentioned it he said 'NO I don't want you doing that cause you do to much already'
But I have asked him to just think about it cause it could be a good thing for us all.
It's not that he won't let me work, but more that he thinks I'm going to be taking on too much. But I think it would be a good thing.
-
I would explain that this is not something extra that you will be taking on but it is something you actually want to do! I know I work because I really enjoy the mental stimulation and the social aspect of it - when we had both boys in daycare it meant that we didn't really make a huge amount of money.
But my husband knew this was something I wanted to do and has been really supportive of this. I know if I didn't like the job and was only doing it for the money he would prefer me to stay at home
-
Well Snappy I just spoke to DH and he was very supportive of a trial run to see how I go, a bit of time thinking about it has made him understand where I'm coming from. I'm actually excited about it now.
Now to get my application letter sorted and resume up dated. Pretty sure I have it on my computer so will be easy to update. ;)
Thanks guys for your input.
-
Excellent dede! Good luck with the application!
-
Dede, its worth a try, if it doesnt work out, you can leave :)
H :)
-
Yes true Hally.
But I'm getting a bit ahead of my self here. I haven't got the job yet, and they are not that easy to come by these days, even people with all the qualifications don't always get the job.
Better not get to excited yet.
-
Good luck Dede :-* :-*
-
All the best dede, whatever decision you make. I guess you'll never know until you have a go!
-
Good luck Dede. Hope this or something just as perfect comes through for you. And that it fits for you and your family.
-
Don't know what happened there. Have been trying to post a photo for Maddy and it turned up here.
thought you were posting some pics of weekend clothes that you'd wear after working all week!
Dede, why not have a go and see how it works out if you get the job. You may find that your picture framing business slides, family doesn't cope, meal times are trying, or the hours are tiring etc and whether taking on a second job is worth it. At least it will put your ideas into perspective, and you will know then perhaps where you can give and take here and there.
-
Good luck Mandi, I hope you get the job & it works out how you want.
I already think you're a marvel with everything you do. Don't try & fit a part time job on top of what you do now, make sure you organise everything & everyone at home and share the workload. Delegate, delegate, delegate!!
-
I'm really only looking at 1 (or 2 at most) shift on a weekend which shouldn't affect much at all at home, I can work around everything else quiet easily. As I work from home doing my picture framing I get time to do the house work etc during the week.
My goal is to eventually have a full time job picture framing as I build it up. Each year it's been growing but these kind of things can take time to grow. And as the kids get older they need less supervision.
And I really do love working with people with disabilities as its quiet rewarding (and challenging at times).
We work really hard to bring up our family but with the cost of living getting harder and harder I think every bit extra helps a lot. An let's face it life is so much easier now having the TM. :)
-
Hi dede - love your new avatar! I'm with Katiej - I think sometimes you can only get an idea of what to do by giving it a go - and delegate! Remember how everyone rose to the occasion when you had your leg in plaster? This is a wonderful learning curve for the kids - in the independence and capability stakes they'll be streets ahead of those of their friends who have everything done for them . . . . Just follow your gut instinct!!
Good luck! :)
-
Thanks guys :)
I now have my Resume and application letter complete and ready to go. Will post on Monday then just wait. I'm a bit nervous now.
DH has come around and is happy for me to give it a go. :)
-
Best of luck dede. We will all be your referees.
-
Best of luck dede. We will all be your referees.
gee thats alot of referees to print out :o
-
Good luck Mandi. I went back to work when DS was just 3 months old. I did 3 hours on a Saturday and loved up. It was my time and also my pocket money. When DS was 1, I did Fridays and Saturdays and my mum and dad would look after him on Fridays. Then when DS was 3 and at preschool I changed to Mondays and Fridays. He was at mum and dads Fridays and preschool Mondays. I still do my 2 days there and now also help in our shop when he is at school. I find work very rewarding and have met so many new friends.
DG referee number 101
-
;D thanks Referee no 101.
I actually went in to Labour with my first DS at this same place Im applying for, It was my second last Night shift :o, I never did make it back for my last shift ;D
-
Good luck dede i hope it all works out for you and your family 😊😊
-
Thanks Frozzie :)
-
Application letter and resume posted :)
Now to wait for a reply.
-
Good luck :)
H :)

fingers crossed, dede, that everything works out to your advantage!! :D
-
Hope it works out Dede.
Good luck.

Well I just got the phone call to have an interview next week. That's one step closer to getting the job. I'm nervous now. It's been a few years since I had an interview.
-

fingers crossed Mandi.
-
Dede, remember to relax and be yourself and you will do fine. Who wouldn't want you.
-
Be myself? Do you think that's a good idea ;D
-
You will be fine dede, its in the bag.
-
Yay, interview, smile
H :)
-
That's good news Mandi. God luck :)
-
That's wonderful news dede.
Get at least one new thing to wear to the interview to boast your confidence.
If you are confident, show enthusiasm and a passion for what you do - you can usually fake the rest.
-
An interview - that's great DG. You are halfway there, good luck.
-
I was fairly confident at getting at least an interview with my experience and qualifications, I just was unsure about my availability only being for weekends. Oh well I explained that in my application letter so I guess that's not a problem.
And yes I think I will buy myself a new top for the interview (should be right for the rest).
:)
-

Congratulations dede! Wonderful news. Let us know how the interview goes.
-
I will do :)
Interview 3pm Tuesday.
-
You will be fine. No worries.

All the best, Dede! I read an article not long ago that said one of the weirdest questions someone had been asked in a job interview was 'How would you put an elephant in a refrigerator?'!I'm guessing they're not going throw that one at you.
-
All the best, Dede! I read an article not long ago that said one of the weirdest questions someone had been asked in a job interview was 'How would you put an elephant in a refrigerator?'!I'm guessing they're not going throw that one at you.
This was my answer B4 i googled it
Cut it up. Open the refrigerator put in the elephant and close the door
The right answer is
Open the refrigerator put in the elephant and close the door
-
Gee I'm glad I know the answer to that one now incase they ask ;D
-
I would look at the interviewer like they were crazy and asked why on earth they wanted to put an elephant in the fridge?
I hate dumb questions like these - I mean truly unless it is a customer service role where you get dumb questions from the public how does it help them assess if you can do the role?
-
Well interview all done. I was nervous but all went well (I think) will hear fro them next week. You should all get a phone call soon as all my references lol ;)
-
Jobs in the bag dede.
-
So, did they ask about the elephant?
Now the waiting begins. I reckon you've got more than a good chance of success - you have the experience and you are willing to work weekends, which the regular staff probably aren't so keen on doing.
Do all your odd jobs around your home now so that everything is ready and organised for you when you start your new job.
-
Good luck Mandi. What do we tell them when they call 'sorry she wouldn't have time to work, she is always either cooking or on the forum' :D :D :D Seriously though, if it all went well, it probably will be a good outcome.
-
Judy please lie ;D but if I get the job I will need to cook for the residents of the group homes (although without a TM :( how will I cope? )
And no they didn't ask about the elephant :( I was all prepared as well.
Seriously though I have to ring them back tomorrow with to phone references from my previous Job. But as people come and go so much I have to check who is there still that can be a referee for me.
-

You just tell them to ring all of us. You work hard for all of us. We will give you a reference.
Gert
-
Just don't let them see the shopping thread or the WA Retreat shenanigans!! ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
They might not have asked about the elephant but they did ask you if you could cook then Mandi ? - the job sounds perfect for you.
-
Apparently DS (5) knows how you cook an elephant.
Step 1. Get a really small elephant
Step 2. Start from the trunk and place in the TM while blades are spinning and chop up until all done. Lol
Not sure what you do with it them. ;D
-
Sounds like you have it in the bag :)
H :)
-
Good luck. Keeping fingers and toes crossed for you.

I really hope it's yours Mani ....good luck!!
-
Thanks everyone. Will keep you informed. Just a waiting game now.
-
Fingers crossed here too.
-
I hope you get it Mandi.
Robyn
-
Hope all goes well. Thinking of you.
-
Up date on job application. I'm still bloody waiting :(
I was supposed to find out this week, but as I hadnt heard anything I assumed I didn't get it. I decided to give them a ring (cause I am so impatient)
I was told that no one has found out as yet as they are finalizing everything. So I got to keep waiting, waiting, waiting.
Maybe they are just trying to tell me that I didn't get the job and I just have to wait in hope (they just allowing time for Australia post to hand me my unsuccessful letter)
I'm loosing confidents :(
-
Hang in there Mandi.
-
JD I was just about to type those same words.
Keep positive.
H :)
-
I'm trying Judy.
I think my biggest problem is I know I have the qualifications and experience for the job. And I think I have a nice personality and manner.
So I have been beating myself up trying to work out why I wouldn't get the job. Maybe I didn't do so well in the interview, maybe it's because my first aid certificate needs renewing, maybe because I don't have a manual handling certificate. Maybe it's because I can only work weekends, or maybe they just didn't like me. Or a bit of everything. ??????
Be patient Mandi :)
-
Mandi,
As a previous manager and HR consultant, sometimes things get more complicated than expected. I know once I kept applicants waiting for 2 weeks, as we couldn't decide between 2. We did some budgeting and hired 2 people instead of 1. Or the was another case where we felt one applicant was VERY suited to another position in the organisation and wanted to find out whether it was possible for the other area to take them on.
Keep your fingers crossed.
DG xxx
-
And toes ;)
Thanks guys. Just having a bit of a (dare I say it) whinge :D
-
Don't over think it Dede. I hope the reply arrives early next week so you can give us the good news.
-
Good luck Mandi let us know how you go
-
Don't over think it Dede. I hope the reply arrives early next week so you can give us the good news.
Me too :)
-
Hang in there. it can often take a while.
-
Oh dede I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!
-
Sending good vibes your way. Hang in there Mandi.
-
Ditto to everyone else's posts ;)
Think positive Mandi, and its their loss if they don't hire you :-*
-
Know how you are feeling Dede. If it turns out you don't get the job there may be something much more suitable waiting for ya. Of course they would be mad not to hire you but it won't be the end of the world. Sometimes if you get a rejection it may be they are waiting to hear from someone's uncles cousin twice removed who once expressed interest in the job six monts ago.
Anyway fingers crossed too.
Gert

Sometimes it takes 2 months to make a decision.
Hang in there.
If its meant to be, it will.

I can understand that when all you guys being my referees :D it will take them awhile to ring you all.
-
I can understand that when all you guys being my referees :D it will take them awhile to ring you all.
Probably going to be a little while longer too as they haven't phoned me yet!!!
Hang in there Mandi, they are probably deciding how they can BEST use YOU and your skills to their BEST benefit ;) :-* :-*
-
I remember when I applied for a job 14 years ago, as a rep, they took 2 months before interviewing me.
When they did, I got the job that same day.
They had not received any other applicants worth interviewing, so it was re advertised 3 times more.
Hang in there. :)
-
That reminds me when I had my last interview before this one, I went in for the interview and left employed, before I got home they rang me to ask if I could do some shifts. I was in shock, it all happened so quickly :)
-
dede, try not to worry too much. I have had a few job interviews and none have gone as expected. Some good and some bad.
Now that you are in the market for a job, word will get around.
-
Mandi im sure it will work out fine and if not there is much worse in life thn no getting a job.. There is always next time 😊
-
Thanks guys. And yes your right Frozzie that there are worse things to happen than not get this job. I will be disappointed but will move on and see what else is about :)
-
Ok finally got a letter today........I didn't get the job :(
But I'm not upset about it, I'm just glad I finally found out either way. Now I can get on with it and continue looking after my family and building my picture framing business up. I will keep an eye out for something else but I'm not going to worry about it too much at this stage.
Thanks everyone for your encouragement over the last few weeks :)
-
its their loss mandi, i am gald u r not upset about it . :-*
-
Thanks fundj, life is too short to be upset about minor setbacks :)
-
Well that door is shut but another door will open. Just wait and see.
Gert
-
I agree Gert, it's forwards and upwards from here on :)
-
I agree with Gert, one closes and something else better comes along. :)
-
Dede im sorry to hear that you didn't get the job - but what a great attitude you have to the whole thing. Im sure life has something wonderful in store for you shortly.
-
I believe that everything happens for a reason Mandi ;) I'm sure there is something else out there waiting for you :D
:-* :-*
-
Glad it is not worrying you Mandi, great attitude and now the wait is over (the agonising part) you can move forward. Good luck with your picture framing business, get your name out there and make it grow. :-* :-*
-
After hearing about all those poor children who died in that fire (including 2 year old triplets) how can I be upset about not getting a job. Life can be so cruel sometimes for some people, so how can I complain :)
My thoughts are with all the family's who have lost loved ones :(
-
Sorry to hear you didn't get it, something will come along soon :)
-
Sorry you didn't get the job Mandi but I agree with others something else is destined for you. :)
-
Dede, I am sure that something even BETTER waiting for you. That has been my experience. ;D
-
Oh mandi sorry about the job, but things happen for a reason. Here is something that might take your mind off it.

DG, your a naughty gorl, LOL
Dede, mretime to grow your business & keep to budget ;D. Sorry that you didnt get it, their loss.
H :)
-
Dede,
That's disappointing for you. Maybe something else will come along. Glad to hear that you're still smiling.
-
Oh mandi sorry about the job, but things happen for a reason. Here is something that might take your mind off it.

Thanks DG lol. I forgot what this topic was all about already :D
-
That's a bummer Mandi, but it just means that there's something else even better in store for you.
-
If they didn't realise how much you have to offer, dede, they don't deserve you.
You are kind, warm, on the all, flexible, generous, motivated, energetic. You will find a wonderful position soon that uses your skills, experience and makes the most of your enthusiasm and your management skills.
You go girl.
-
Thanks guys. I'm not giving up, just re evaluating what I'm doing. All is good :)
-
You could become a pole dancer... :o
-
(just in case the pole dancing doesn't work out)
Don't give up on it yet dede. You might have missed out this time but they have your name on file now and if for some reason the first applicants don't work out or another position becomes available they go back through previous applicants.
-

You've got the look Mandi, but have you got the moves?? ;D ;D ;D
-
(http://www.inquisitr.com/wp-content/mormon-pole-dancing.jpg)
OMG love the outfit. Can I borrow it for the weekend?
Gert
-
No problem Gert :D
-
You've got the look Mandi, but have you got the moves?? ;D ;D ;D
Do you think I have enough makeup on?
Oh and I definitely got the moves :)
-
Yeah, I think enough make up, but not enough bling ;)
On second thought Mandi, I don't think you even need the moves if you look like that ;D ;D But glad to hear you've got them ;)
-
Maybe I need a G-string instead ?
-
TOTALLY ;D ;D
I can see this on the cover of the next Australian Hair and Beauty Magazine ;)
-
Lol wel well I'm away frOm the forum and look what you are all up to..oh and hubba tO the angel ;)
Mandi better luck next time and like Amy I'm a big believer in everything happens for a reason so I'm sure there is something better and more suited for you out there or who knows maybe if you added some gimicky thing to your framing business like original frames or something that could be the boost you need to take your business to the next level xx
-
Thanks Frozzie :) we do miss you on the forum.
And yes I really do want to build my framing business up. It's grown heaps in the last 3 years but I just want to turn it into a full time job which may take me a while yet. But I'm getting there :)
-
You should do a website for your business that way those of us that don't live in tas could check it out and use your services if it's convenient to your needs?? Just a thought!
-
So true - EVERYTHING happens for a reason. My contract was terminated at a job I absolutely hated. I was micro managed and treated like an idiot, when the truth was I could do my managers job better than she could. And the pay rate was less than I was worth but I was so desperate to be back in the industry I took it anyway. Then, I got the job I have now that I LOVE, with excellent conditions, the pay is fantastic, I have heaps of flexibility about the hours and days I work - its everything I've ever wanted. Well, for now anyway. My degree's still a few years off...
Good luck Mandi - I'm sure something better will pop soon. And it'll be worth the wait.
-
Sorry you didnt get the job Mandi like the others i bet something better is waiting around the corner.
-
You should do a website for your business that way those of us that don't live in tas could check it out and use your services if it's convenient to your needs?? Just a thought!
I did think of that at one stage Frozzie , but as I do custom framing it's hard to show people choices without being face to face. Yes I could make ready made frames but I couldn't compete with cheaper versions around. At one stage I was looking into tassie timber frames (which are beautiful) but very expensive and a lot more time involved. At this stage I'm still doing everything by hand which means I can keep my prices down which is more affordable for more people without loosing quality. I do love framing and it's something I can do for many years to come. And working from home is amazing when you have a young family to take care of as well. :)
-
I think people are willing to pay if you have something unique and of quality.. Most things around that are cheaper are that way because they are mass produced.. If you have a unique product or materials you can use that and yes you do custom made but I'm sure you take photos of your work so use them as examples of your work for a website.. These days people look online and will pay for something unique and wonderfully done like hand made frames.. Examples of your work go a long way to enticing future customers and giving them an idea of what you can do..
-
Just go with the pole dancing.
-
Just go with the pole dancing.
I agree. Much easier. More fun dressing up ;)
-
What about getting a market stall Dede
-
What about getting a market stall Dede
Yep that's another thought. Only problem there is I do the paper run on Sunday mornings with the kids (most markets are on a Sunday ) and my kids wouldn't be happy if I stopped doing it as they receive 100% of the money :) we have been doing it for 2.5 years now. And it's a bit of pocket money for the kids.
I have a few ideas in my head on how to boost my business, just have to sort out the details :)
-
Good luck :)
-
Yes good luck and let us know once its all sorted out...
