Have finally found a recipe that seems to be very popular here, although you need to have green soap. Do you know the soap I mean, it's the hard soap that our grandmothers used years ago to hand wash things, dark green and doesn't smell of much, and here you can buy it in hardware shops and some little old fashioned supermarkets. Do you know the soap that I mean? I will buy some and take a photo of it to show you! ;)
-
Ours is yellowy white I think Bron - never seen a green one but maybe someone else knows if there is one. Would probably do the same thing as yours. Ours is called Velvet soap - I presume you can still buy it now.

You can still buy it! Still comes in the same yellow and blue box even ;) You may have to look hard on the bottom shelf of the supermarket for it in the laundry aisle. Would love to have this recipe but would it be suitable for front loaders I wonder? About to make the dishwasher detergent tomorrow :)
-
I don't know why ours is green, but its a real old fashioned soap, no smell, leaves your hands soft too! In fact most dermatologists recommend its use when people have sensitive skin or chicken pox!
Will post the recipe as soon as I make it, tomorrow when I get to the shops to buy it.
Ps. Have read that the dishwasher detergent is wonderful for cleaning the bath, sink and loo, will have to make some more to keep it myself! ;D
-
Lol I was just wondering myself this morning when I was having a shower if the dishwasher detergent would make a great cleaner for the bathroom - I was thinking about trying it...now I definitely will thanks Bron
-
Glad we now have to use less dishwasher goo, it will last so much longer now and I was having trouble getting 3-4 tablespoons of it into that little container ??? ??? ??? Be interesting to see if it still has the same cleaning power with such a reduction in quantity. Can see that it would be ideal for cleaning the bath, loo etc. Anything without chemicals in it, has to be good.
-
Let us know how it goes with one spoon!
-
That's it! Just made it! Wonderful .....smells lovely! Mine is a lovely pale bluey/greeny colour! I love it already. It has cost me all of 30 cents to make and has made almost 4 litres! Can you believe it!
Am leaving it to stand overnight but will be using it at crack of dawn! ;) ;) ;) How exciting! Even DH is enthusiastic! As I do 2 or 3 loads a day! A huge saving and I am very confident that it will be first class! According to reviews on the websites...all looking very positve ;D ;D ;D
The original recipe is for 200g soap, but as my bar weighed 250g (clever clogs!) thought would adapt it and just add the extra water, but it all got a bit messy as all the water didn't quite fit in so I was having to pour some out into a jug, and another jug and another bottle, so I will post the exact recipe and not mine, for 50g extra soap, its probably not worth all the messing about! You can imagine my kitchen bench now...can't you? :o :o :o
Here you go.... I should imagine it will make about 3 litres and not 4!!! ;) ;) ;)
Washing Machine Liquid Detergent
200 g old fashioned washing soap (ours in Spain is green with glycerine)
1300 g water
250 ml ammonia
Firstly, cut the soap into 2 or 3 bits, and then blitz progressively 5 to 10 for about 30 seconds, (it looks like green breadcrumbs!)
Then add 500ml water, and mix speed 5 to 10 for 1 minute, add remaining water and mix 30 seconds on speed 5 or 6.
Pour into a bottle and then add the glass of ammonia, shake it and leave the top off overnight.
The next morning you have liquid detergent! ;) ;) ;)
The ammonia is excellent for getting grease stains out!
Will post photos next time I make it, as this time the kitchen looked a bit of a mess, although the final result has been ace! ;D ;D ;D
-
Am soooo proud of myself! You just cannot imagine!
Now am thinking, will be great for kids with sensitive skin and sometimes have an allergy to other detergents. Much friendlier on their delicate skin...don't you think?
-
Thanks Bron, just one question. How much water does 1'3 litres mean? I use cloudy ammonia and a some dishwashing detergent in cold water to wash my windows and glass splashback - it is an old fashioned item but of course, these are the things that work.
-
And Bron how much is a glass of ammonia and is it the same as cloudy ammonia?
-
1'3 is one litre and 300ml, or grams as really the weight is pretty much equal, maybe its 5g difference, so not important!
The cloudy ammonia, not too sure what that is, but here in Spain, we use ammonia for washing windows, removing stains with fabrics, textiles and clothes, plus we use a drop on a mosquito bite! ;D ;D ;D One glass would be 250ml.
-
The difference between ordinary ammonia and cloudy ammonia is that the latter has a bit of soap added to it so this would be perfectly fine to use in this recipe. Have only seen the cloudy one in my shop and use it all the time for cleaning various things.
-
Well it smelt lovely this morning, even with the ammonia!
Will let you know at lunch time when I hang out the washing! Looking good so far ;)
-
How much did you put in the machine Bron?
-
Well I don't know really, :'( :'( :'( I poured it into the compartment and its On its final rinse now! So hopefully in 10 mins it will be perfect! ??? ??? ???
I would guess maybe half a glass full, 125ml? I think, but next time I will look properly! ;D
-
I am looking forward to hearing the verdict, this looks like a great thing to make and so cheap!
-
Bron, have you got a front end loader? Mine is a top loader so there is no compartment to put it in. I think the front ends use less than tops, don't they? If I can get the soap when I go to the shops this morning, I will be making this later today. Does it froth up?
-
heehee front end loader (http://images.google.com.au/images?q=front%20end%20loader&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi) sorry judydawn, i read it and something was tickling my funnybone and i couldn't work out what. then i came back to the post and googled ;)
-
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D What are they called - just a front loader maybe. Anyway, I'm sure Bron will work it out what I meant. You have a quick mind for this time of the morning Karen :D :D :D :D
-
Mine is a top loader! But it does have a compartment, hey the soap washes fantastic! Not a stain or mark on anything, and it smells lovely. Have done 3 loads now, and I used a small beaker cup (one of the kids) I would say maybe 100ml to 125ml approx. Guess you could just insert it in a ball thing or pour straight onto clothes, after all its only soap! ;D ;D ;D
-
Thanks bron - sounds great - we have yellow velvet soap, but years ago I saw a similar recipe using that so it should be OK.
Yeah, I had a front end loader for the farm - god to be able to laugh at ourselves.
-
Hi bron - modified the recipe to 330g water and 250ml ammonia - hope that's right?
-
Hey Thermomixer, that wouldn't be enough liquid would it? Using Bron's 1.3 litres makes a gooey mixture, the lesser amount would be too stiff I would have thought. I have my washing machine going as we speak so will post my verdict later.
-
Yep, pretty sure it was supposed to be 1300g water :)
I'll be making this soonish! I wonder if I still have ammonia here somewhere.
-
1'3 is one litre and 300ml, or grams
Thakns JD - have fixed it - in my haste last night I misread it to be 300ml - thought she was saying 1/3 litre - thanks v. much
-

Yes 1300g in total of water and 250 ammonia.
JD how did it wash, mine is great, lovely smell and no stains, which is excellent as have seem to have 3 very dirty kids at the end of eash day! Wouldn't change them! ;) But the soap is great, I won't be buy washing powder again! ;D ;D
-
It was great Bron - do you wash in cold or hot water? We do cold washes here (no greasy clothes to worry about) and I had to help the white goo sort of dissolve at the beginning although I'm sure it would have done so in it's own good time. I'm Mrs Impatient and wanted to see if it made bubbles or not so gave it a hand. Think I might dissolve it in hot water next time and just add that mixture to the load. Probably used 1/2 cup and it wasn't frothy but then washing powder isn't either if you use the recommended amount. So cheap to make and will last me for ages - I only need to wash every 7-10 days - aren't I lucky!
-
Oh Wow every week, how amaaazing is that! I wash at least once a day, and at weekends the poor sod is on all day! Thats the problem with 3 very dirty kids who also swim and train daily, so it seems to be lots of towels and sports stuff too!
I wash normally at 40º, but I don't think that you would need to mix it with hot water first. Remember this is the soap that our grandmothers used with no washing machines or hot water! ;) ;) ;) I reckon it will be fine Judy! After all it is a liquid.
-
i wish i could wash only once a week too!!! (though dh does most of ours anyway ;)) we are the same as you bron, with 3 kids. we have 2 washing lines :D
i need to make me some of this :D
-
The detergent sounds great and I wanted to give it a go. When I asked for ammonia at the chemists, I was asked which concentration I needed. What did you use for your recipe? Thanks for your help.
-

LOL - at our class all the Aussies dashed for the washing machines in the villa when they arrived - one said they were told by Engish friends that we wash too much (sounds like you must too bron ;) ;) ) and that the baby would have no skin they number of times it had a bath ;D ;D ;D
I have my third load of washing ready for before we leave here - one pommie is just wearing the same clothes once a week - but leaves them to allow the smell to dissipate and so had 7 sets of everything :-\ :-\ :o
-
I just used cloudy ammonia from the cleaning aisle of the supermarket.
-
One other thing Bron, is sunlight soap the same thing as velvet soap and could you use lux flakes instead as it is pure soap also? Thanks Sandy
-
Hi Sandy, I have googled your question and in detergent making they say use Sunlight or Velvet so that answers the first part of your question. As far as the flakes are concerned, I'm not sure - another Aussie may know the answer to that one before Bron wakes up.
-
Thanks Judydawn. I have just made up some using the sunlight soap. A little word of warning!!!!!! Mine made up to about 3 litres, so when I was putting it into a 2 lt. container I put the cup of ammonia in before I filled it up with soap so had to use a bit more ammonia in another container. I`ll see how it turns out. Has anyone said how much to use in a front loader yet?
-
No they haven't said Sandy. I used a good 1/2 cup in my top loader - it didn't make soap bubbles but it did a good job so must have been enough. That's what Bron uses too. I'd use the same in the front loader, maybe a bit less.
-
The flakes are fine too! Probably better, well quicker by 30 seconds I should say, as you won't have to blitz then as long! ;)
Here there are flakes too, but they work out 20 cents more expensive!!!!! :D :D :D So I bought the bars! ;D
-
Well I tried mine this morning and used about a gloop of it as it is very thick, could just about cut it, but it did a good job on the washing. Even got some beetroot stains out of one of my tops. Am waiting to see if it makes the towels as stiff as the other stuff without putting them in the dryer. Will keep you informed. Sandy
-
I have to ask before I make this...and I am dying to make it and try lol
Has anyone tried it in a front loading machine yet or can anyone tell me if it gets really sudsy in a top loading machine (hope you know what I mean!)
Don't think I could deal with all the suds and the time it takes to clean it up if it went wrong in my machine ;D
-
No, 1/2 cup in my top loader didn't go sudsy. In the 'old days' powders used to soap up but even they don't do that when you use the recommended quantity. I used to equate suds with a cleaner wash but don't think that is the case nowadays.
-

It should be fine as it doesnt seem to make suds, I would put in a a ball thing and throw it in with the clothes. I found one today at the supermarket, cost me 60 cents. DH laughed as he said the plastic ball costs more than 4 litres of soap!!!! True!
Everything washes lovely and has a lovely smell. I am very happy with it, seems to be a bit thick but guess that doesn't matter. Maybe if its left for long it would go a bit goooey, but I guess you could just blitz it up again with a little more water ;) ;)
-
Thanks everyone....if it doesn't go sudsy then I am in!! I haven't used sudsy detergents for years even when I had a toploader as I always used the concentrates. Now to find a container to hold it when it is made...life presents such challenges lol
I will add a post and confirm how I went with the front loader ;D
-
I am keen to hear how it goes in a front loader, too.
I know not to use anything that foams up in it, lest it bugger up the works.

How did the towels come out Sandy? I always tumble mine, so they are always soft! I live right on the beach, and so humidity is really high here, so even in summer can't be without my tumble drier! ;D
-
stop bron, you are making me more and more jealous! can you show us any pics of where you live?
-
Look on google earth, village is called Guadalmar, in Malaga, and I live right to the right of the village facing out to sea, by the big field (where the kids get their quad out) just one hotel and very quiet. Probably the only part left of Malaga that is quiet! Can you find it?
-
oohhhh I found it!! ;D
-
lovely!!!
jealous of all those pools lol
-
It is nice! We have been here now for almost 9 years now! The kids love it....and we do too! Have to have a pool as it sometimes gets to 50º!!!

Not exactly sure - but looks good - tried to link it http://maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=en&q=Guadalmar,++Malaga&um=1&ie=UTF-8&split=0&gl=au&ei=M8YRSpzmF5DesgaF9JSZCA&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1 (http://maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=en&q=Guadalmar,++Malaga&um=1&ie=UTF-8&split=0&gl=au&ei=M8YRSpzmF5DesgaF9JSZCA&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1)
Are we close ??
-
I gave my Mum a small jar of this goo and you will be pleased to know Bron, that it has passed the test with her. I will now do her a whole batch for herself. She loves to wash and does so at every opportunity - the sun only has to come out and she goes around the house looking for things to wash in her tiny automatic machine.
-
judy can you please send her to me? i solemnly promise to keep her very busy!!!
-
She washes and irons in the same day, hand washes her smalls every night and sweeps paths daily too - puts me to shame. At 86 she is a little beauty ;D ;D

Like lots of the little old dears here. Remember one of the threads about gnocchi or ravioli/tortellini - you need somebody like that to give the job to make them. They go all day with nimble fingers (Idle hands are the devil's helper !!)
-
JD, Pleased to hear that she likes the goo too! ;D
Almost Thermomixer. My street is Hesperides, nearer, on the beach, where all the cars are parked. On the beach is a little Hotel, and I live 2nd line, just behind the hotel. Can you see the apartment block in a 'n' shape with a small pool in the middle. Get sand in my shoes every morning walking to the car!!! How lovely is that! I really do appreciate it, as I am a London chick, but my kids don't really realise how lucky they are, they seem to think that its normal to live right on the sea, and go to sleep to the sound of the sea.
-
How about - http://maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=en&q=Guadalmar,++Malaga&ie=UTF8&split=0&gl=au&ei=M8YRSpzmF5DesgaF9JSZCA&t=h&ll=36.663171,-4.460103&spn=0.001011,0.001717&z=19 (http://maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=en&q=Guadalmar,++Malaga&ie=UTF8&split=0&gl=au&ei=M8YRSpzmF5DesgaF9JSZCA&t=h&ll=36.663171,-4.460103&spn=0.001011,0.001717&z=19) on the corner of Calles Moby Dick - muy espanol.
Now I'm really jealous - tell your children that you'll send them to London if they're bad - have they been??? They would probably think it's great - and it is for a holiday. Take them in winter, when the days are short and gloomy, the weather is attrocious and .... ooops - sorry CarolineW, forget you are listening. ;) ;)
-
Yes thats it! You are soooo clever, see the yellow van (looks like the rubbish lorry) thats the entrance to my garage!! Oh my! Looks like me swimming in the pool! Only joking! But could be....how fantastic is internet! How lovely to show you all where I live! ;D
Thankyou Thermomixer!
-
Ohhhhh, should not have looked. Wow! You lucky thing, Amanda.
In other news I have been waiting and waiting for a certain container to become free in our house so I can make this goo, and my husband had the opportunity to use it up last night and forgot :(
-
Thanks Thermomixer for all that work on where Bron lives - I wasn't having any luck finding it myself. The yellow van finished it off nicely thanks Bron. Do you ever go 'home' to England to visit relatives, holidays etc or is it just so damn good where you are that you don't need a holiday :D :D :D
Made Mum's batch of washing detergent yesterday and forgot to reset the scales when I added the first lot of liquid. Ended up guessing the amount and the final quantity came right up to the top of the bowl - oops, not supposed to go above the mark :o :o It did appear to be runnier than the first lot but I thought that wouldn't be a problem, may have been easier to pour into the machine but next day, it had set just like the first lot of goo so no harm done. I would like to give my DD some for her front loader so have you guys worked out yet just how much to put in that type of machine.
-
Well my verdict is that it is not too bad. The towels still come out rather stiff and the smell of the soap is rather overpowering even after everything is dry. Is your velvet soap as strong as the sunlight soap? So I thought I might add some essential oil and see how that will work out. I had some rosemary oil so have put a few drops of that in. I have a front loader and the soap didn`t make any froth in it, so it is pretty safe to use. Someone said that they use vinegar as a final wash and I was wondering if that would soften the clothes at all? Sandy
-
Maybe Sunlight soap is more powerful than Velvet as I have just taken things off the line and I can't smell anything except freshness. My towels don't dry stiff (unless they are the older ones which are stiff anyway) and I have used white cheap vinegar in my final rinse for years now. My washing machine is 15 years old and I have never had 1 problem with it - now that I have said that it will probably break down next week :P :P Mind you, it doesn't get used every day like some people with young families. So, how much did you use in your front loader Intrepidtrier?
-
I started out using about 1 capful from a liquid detergent bottle and then added about half a cup next time. I have also found a blog about making soap, it`s called down-to-earth/rebatching soap and on there she shows how to make soap using lux flakes.
-
i read down to earth every day :) it's mostly great info (though she has made a few comments about SAHM's / working mums i didn't agree with ;))
-
I love how we all call it goo! ;D
Can we officially change the title to Detergent Goo for Washing machines ....please!
I think its fantastic...mine doesn't smell overpowering at all, in fact it smells sooo much nicer than anything else, but here ours is green, am making some more tomorrow so will post a picture!
-

Done and given it the big Thumbs Up :-*

Thankyou Thermomixer!
Bron, just give me a few years to get that beach bod back ;) and I'll be there... LOL!!!
-
You're welcome always!
But I have given up attempting to get my beach bod back! But at least I had it when I was young, some people don't even have it then! So we mustn't complain, or have such high expectations, after all we ARE mummys....and not all mummys get their figures back. I certainly didnt! ;D But when I was 20 I WAS drop dead gorgeous, which is what I remind myself every morning when I look in the mirror! Shame it didnt last, but hey health, family & THX are all the things that make me happy! :D :D :D
-
I never had that drop-dead gorgeous figure - but didn't feel like scaring the natives while on hols, BUT, the natives really don't care!!! The sights you see on and around the beachs and swimming pools - they are happy with their figures and all believe they are beautiful - LET IT ALLLLLLLLL hang out. ;D ;D
-
Oh yes in Europe ...or maybe its just Spain! :-)) :-)) My beach is a nudist one too! Yes all nude!!!! :-[ :-[ :-[ They normally are about 500m down the coast but still! They certainly let it ALL hang out! Think my husband chose the area to live as in those days we had a dog, and it was fun to walk the dog and have a nosey! :o :o :o
-
You should check out http://theshapeofamother.com - nudity warning, but real life all bared to see! It is comforting :)
-
I made this today with something I had in the cupboard called "pure soap". Wow, it didn't look like breadcrumbs, more like baking powder and it went straight up my nose and gave me the sneezes. It may be because the soap was rather old and had dried out?
Is anyone else petrified when they add ammonia to anything? I felt like a mad scientist and wondered if I would blow something up :-[
I managed to fill a 2.4L container with it though (not very well as I got a heap in the sink too! Hah!) and we will see how it develops :) My TM is stinky now, not gorgeously clean like when I made the dishwasher goo. :(
-
I do use ammonia normally anyway, so it doesnt concern me! Its safer than bleach to be honest, at least it can't stain anything, or burn skin as here we dab it on mozzy bites. ;) My THX is lovely and clean after this, much more than the dishwasher goo, so it must be the soap! ???
-
Rowyfo, mine looks like powder (not breadcrumbs) too so age has nothing to do with it. You didn't put the ammonia in the TM bowl did you? You shouldn't have had room to do so anyway but I can't think why your machine smelt stinky - it is afterall, only soap and doesn't get stinky until you add the ammonia once it has been put into a container.
-
The bowl just smells really, really soapy and was very hard to clean. Might try yellow soap next time, once this lot runs out.
I put the ammonia straight into the bottle :)
-
Have been using this for the last couple of days and really happy to report it works fantastic in a front loading machine ;D ;D ;D
I am using approx 100 ml (only because that is the scoop that I have ;) ) Definitely don't need any more that that, might work on seeing if you could get away with the less is more...
Will report back if I have any success
-
Pleased to hear that it has your approval, mine is great. I have also put some in a bucket today (tiny amount, blob of goo) and mopped the marble floor, looks and smells great, even with the ammonia! ;D
-
So mine is not really like goo, more like foam, I hope I made it properly.
I washed towels yesterday and they seemed to come out okay, but I have a blocked nose so I have no idea if they smell good. They looked clean enough. :)
That's good to know about the floor, too.
-
Well, it looks like I will have to try this, especially as someone has already done the hard part for a top loader.
Has anyone had any allergic reactions to it at all? I shouldn't think so with it only being pure soap.
-
It is great Cookie1. Only negative thing I've heard from this end is that when Mum washed her fluffy dressing gown, she had white soap all over it for some reason which is hard to explain as it doesn't stick to track suits, towels etc. Apart from that we both love it and it is so cheap and easy to make. I even have friends going home with the recipe to try and make it in their food processor but haven't heard back as to whether they have actually done it yet or not. Of course, I will make it for them if it isn't successful in their machines.
By the way, forgot to add, Mum just threw the dressing gown back into the washing machine and it came off.
-
aagh i went shopping yet again and forgot to buy what i need to make the 2 soaps... :-))
-
Have got my M-I-L making the actual soap now, bit more complicated with recycling oil and using sosa (I think its called caustic in English) she is now making huge buckets of the stuff! ;D ;D ;D ;D we are thinking of going into business!!!
-
Well, it looks like I will have to try this, especially as someone has already done the hard part for a top loader.

Hi Cookie...my DS (4yo) gets terrible eczema and we haven't had any problems so far. I don't expect any, as you say it is pure soap. It is normally all the other gunk they throw in the box that causes the problems. I love it.
Oh and on another note... it washes my kids dirty disgusting oily smelly (think I hate them lol) McDonalds work uniforms cleaner than anything else I have found - the oily sheen has disappeared from their pants (thank god they only work there part time!)
-
I washed my pot holders today which were in a pretty bad state and couldn't believe how clean they came out - just another testiment to the excellence of this goo. Ordinary washing powder never got them this clean. Also a friend took the directions home to try and make it in her food processor, have just spoken to her and yes, it was a success - she loves it too. ;) ;) ;)
-
HI New to the forum and although 4 kids and working SO excited about the non-food recipes. Will give it a go soon but meanwhile. If you add drops of lavender oil to the mix you will have not only gorgeous smelling clothes but also additional antibacterial!!!!! 1-3 drops max per wash.
Also can suggest geranium (1-3)... good anti depressive
lemon (1 drop powerful stuff)
peppermint (1 drop) invigorating
sandalwood (1 drop) nice for the guys and very pleasing to the girls well me anyway!!!!!
mandarin (1-3 drops) orangey, light and fun
Thanks for the inspiration
Living in spain so will look for the green soap!!!!!
-
welcome Kerry :)
-
Seems like people with names beginnig with J & K are over-represented on the Forum ?? Especially the Ks. ;) ;)
BTW Kerry - good to have you on board. Looking forward to the Asian recipes.
-
haha!
-
May I add - for those using FL machines particularly, soap does tend to build up in these machines so a monthly "rinse" on the hottest wash setting with a couple of tablespoons of vinegar can keep your machine washing to the best of it's best ability! :)
-
Seems like people with names beginnig with J & K are over-represented on the Forum ?? Especially the Ks. ;) ;)
Actually, there are lots of names starting with A too !! - strange.

i'm tempted to start an alphabet poll now LOL!

Between you and me (and all the others) ILB, do you think he is losing it ??? ??? ???

Well between us JD - I have started to wonder the same.... and often there are a number of postings by Thermomixer straight after each other... ??? :-)) ... but shhhh don't tell him that will you... ;) :D :D

Seems like people with names beginnig with J & K are over-represented on the Forum ?? Especially the Ks. ;) ;)
Actually, there are lots of names starting with A too !! - strange.
Thermomixer I must say, I'm enjoying your random conversation with yourself ;) :D :D :-))
Between you and me (and all the others) ILB, do you think he is losing it ??? ??? ???
I lost it ages ago - hey, but you've worked that out ;D ;D ;D

And I second that ILB :D :D :D

Kerry, mercadona sells 3 bars for just over one euro.
-
Well I've finally worked my way through the big 10kg box of washing powder I had and have now made this tonight.
:o :o :o :o :o :o WOW!!! :o :o :o :o :o
Not only is it so cheap to make - but also SOOOOOO easy!!!! ;D
So to all those lurkers out there - give it ago!!! I'll be taking some to dinner tomorrow night to give to a couple of other TMX owners to try and then hopefully make their own ;D ;D
-
:o :o :o :o :o :o WOW!!! :o :o :o :o :o
Not only is it so cheap to make - but also SOOOOOO easy!!!! ;D
AND it works so well - best washing detergent I have used and I used to use the very expensive concentrated / sensitive blah blah blah ones
I feel a bit used after all that lol
-
I finally made this goo this week and today washed the curry stained tablecloth and serviettes from last night - all the marks came out! I used sunlight soap (green household bars). Will make the dishwasher soap next!
-
I'm nearl at the end of my first batch and wondering if anyone else gets an over powering smell of amonia when you open the container (do you keep the lid on yous??) It catches my breath each time and find it hard to breath.
Or perhaps I hadn't mixed it in together enough?? Any suggestions would be great thank!
-
I keep the lid on mine ILB and yes, there is a strong smell of ammonia when you open the lid. I just don't take a deep breath in whilst I am dishing out the goo and put the lid back on quick smart. If you followed the recipe to a T, it would have been mixed enough so it wouldn't be anything you've done. Perhaps you could wear a mask for that little task - you may just have a sensitive sinus system.
-
Thanks Judy - yes perhaps I should try that ;) I make sure the laundry door is open as much as possible and stand next to it, but it doesn't help a huge amount.
-
Hi ILB Just had a quick look on the web re ammonia substitutes and a suggestion was vinegar and water...don't know if you could try that instead - would that be safe for clothes and what sort of smell (if any) would it leave? I haven't tried adding essential oils like others have suggested previously - maybe this would help?
I would be interested to hear others suggestions on the ammonia part too...
Ali
-
A bit more research - I think we could substitute the ammonia with either vinegar or bi-carb. I know that others have said in other threads that they use vinegar in the rinse cycle in their washing machines so it should be ok?
Below is a (non TM) recipe I found that had bi-carb instead.
2a. CLOTHES WASHING SOAP
1 cake pure soap, 1 cup washing soda, water, 3 buckets
Cut/grate the cake of soap into an old saucepan with 1 litre of water and bring to the boil. Puree mixture with a hand beater until smooth. Dissolve 1 cup of washing soda in 1 litre hot water. Strain the soap solution and divide between three buckets with the washing soda solution. Gradually fill each bucket with cold water, mixing with a wooden spoon as you go. It will set into a soft gel. Use 2-3 cups of solution to each wash. You can even use it as a hair shampoo if you wish!
-
ILB I have the same problem where the ammonia also makes me feel like vomiting as well as the sinus burn, I have bought a 1L squeezy sauce bottle with a cap on the lid from the kitchen aisle in Coles and decant into that - with something over my face if DH isn't home to do it for me and it has really helped. I just squeeze the required amount into the detergent cup on my machine and away we go. ;D ;D Much nicer
-
Thanks for your tips everyone! I really appreciate your help. Might try the squeezy bottle first and try adding the lavendar oil when I make the mix instead of at the wash first and see if that helps maybe with JD's suggestion of a mask ;) ;D
If not, then I'll try Ali's suggestion using vinegar or soda.
You are a wonderful bunch!
It's an amazing group we have on the forum with everyone ready to help ;D ;D ;D
-
Mine went very ammonia-ey at the end as well. It also changed from white to pink-ish.
My DH has been itchy lately and has gone back to regular powder, has anyone else had experiences like this? He is not sure yet if it was the goo or not.
-
Well i've just made my first batch of goo.
It is the middle of the day here so i'm hoping that i can test run it by about 10pm tonight.
I cut my bars of velvet soap up into 4 and blitzed them however i thought my thermomix was going to take off. It was looking like a pretty big bumpy ride. So i took the soap out and cut it into smaller bits. Thermy liked that a bit better.
Will report back later with the outcome.
-
i have just finished using my first batch, i thought it worked really well, you can certainly notice the difference in how clean the dishcloths come out! I have quite sensitive skin where detergents are concerned and i didnt have any reaction to the clothes washed in the goo.
-
Mine has stayed white Rowyfo and we have no reactions to it at all - love it in this house.
-
Mine is nearly 2 weeks old and is still white - not sure how old yours is Rowyfo. Miss 3 is prone to mild skin irritations but seems to be pretty good with this.
-
It's all good in this house and all 4 of my boys suffer (funny how DD doesn't lol) from eczema with DS4 being absolutely shocking - I was reluctant to start with to wash his clothes in it :-)) :-)) Don't know why as it has nothing in it compared to the package ones - even the sensitive ones have a lot of "stuff" in them :(
-
Well there you go Kathryn, a great testimony to the goo if ever I've heard one ;) ;) ;) Anyone with any doubts should go ahead and try it after reading your story.
-
I know Judy, but it is scary to make the change as you have to deal with all the allergy symptoms that go with it if it isn't suitable. Sometimes it just feels like better the devil you know :-\ I am just so happy that it is all ok in my house ;D ;D ;D
-
We're on a new batch now. I guess the other one got to about 4-5 weeks old. The soap was white when I made it, it just got a pinkish tinge.
I kept it in a large plastic juice bottle, I wonder if the plastic had anything to do with it.
-
Actually I just checked, I made my first batch on May 26 and the second on August 1. So more like 2 months/9 weeks. I think it started to smell of ammonia about 2 weeks before I gave up on it.
I can't believe it lasted that long with the amount of washing we do...
-
Mine is in a decor plastic container and a batch lasts me a lot longer than 4-5 weeks - still white though right to the end. Strange that. Did you use Sunlight or Velvet - I use Velvet soap.
-
Oh you use a decor container. Brilliant idea. I transferred all my pantry over to tupperware a few years ago and i kept a few decor pour canisters for the shed but i've not used them yet.
The only container I could find yesterday was a 3 litre plastic milk container and i'm not very keen on using that as it might be mistaken for milk. Although milk being stored on the top shelf of a laundry i would think would be pretty rare.
I'm off to fossick around in my shed for the decor (satans Tupperware).
-
My pantry is done in 80% Satan's Tupperware :D :D
I used white soap I bought from Woolies a million years ago, it's Home Brand and just called Pure Soap.
-
my batch couldn't have fitted anymore in the bowl, so i was having a giggle at you trying to juggle more in bron, OMG i can imagine the mess :o :o :D
will trial it tonight or tomorrow and see what we think! love the smell (i used the same homebrand laundry soap as rowyfo i think)
-
I have bought all the gear to make this goo, and when I mentioned it to my DS, he said "OMG Mum, this is taking this Thermomixy thing TOO FAR!!" ;D ;D ;D
-
LOL!!!
-
No CP63, you need to correct him, you are making the most of your machine and ensuring that it also pays for itself alot quicker lol ;) ;)
-
I made some this morning and am just doing the first load of washing as I type. I am very excited to see how this goes as I used to do the other type with the washing crystals and 9 litres of water years ago when I was a fresh and jubilant single parent *lol* how quickly we learn.
I put pink grapefruit essential oil in mine along with 100g of bicarb soda. Will tell you the results when it's done. :)
-
I bought some essential oil to use but didn't know how much to put in or whether to put it into the goo or just put it into the washing machine once it has filled up. Maybe you can answer my question Jessiesgirl.
-
JD - I've been using a water soluable Lavendar oil from the supermarket which I added directly to the load. However I've had a few oil marks appear on some items lately, which I suspect was from the oil ??? ??? So next batch I plan to add the oil to the goo first and see if that's a better result.
-
Thanks ILB, I'll wait until you've done that and tested it ;) ;) ;)
-
Will make my next batch tomorrow ;) So should let you know later in the week after a few loads. ;)
-
Result of washing was very good. I put the essential oil into the goo mix with the last addition of water. I am very happy with the result.
Thanks for the easy recipe.
-
Thanks for that info jessiesgirl. How much did you use per batch?
-
judydawn I honestly only put about 20 drops in. I'm not really that big on smelly clothing but a hint is just nice, this is my test case anyway ;)
I've put in my diary when I made the soap and will see how long it lasts and if any buildup occurs etc.
-
No, me neither but I thought I'd try it for once. There is nothing fresher than hanging your clothes out on the line on a lovely sunny, blowy day for that lovely fresh smell - something sadly lacking this winter.
-

I am missing the fresh smell of line dried clothes, too and don't know when I will get it back.
The wolfhound pup (now 7 months old) thinks that the washing was put there for her. I found all of one load and all the pegs on her bed! :o
Hoping that she comes out of this phase quite soon.
With a household of 5 people that means a lot of washing draping around the house!!
-
I made the goo about 3 - 4 weeks ago in my processor before I got my TM.
Have been using it all this time and found it worked well, but have noticed just recently that some of our clothes are starting to look a little 'dull'. Probably because store bought detergent has optical whiteners and brighteners that this home made stuff hasn't. I therefore have started to use it less, inbetween using store bought detergent.

You sure she didn't just bring it in out of the rain for you Amanda ;D ;D Oh dear, what a problem you have there, you might have to fence off the clothes line ??? Can you bring a photo of her to our coffee day please?
-
I had to buy a little fence for the clothes line at the clinic - my two dogs think that the nurses hang the old towels and blankets out purely for their amusement.
Never see them do it - but one loves chewing pegs :o :o :o
-
Hello All, Have found another way to use the washing machine goo. About 2 months ago I washed my windows with it and since then there has been no frog poo anywhere on them!!! Before as soon as I washed them the bloody frogs would come along at night and use the windows as their loo while they where chasing moths and such, but since using the goo not a mark on them, it must be the amonia they don`t like. Well I hope some of you will like this option as I will be using it all the time now. Sandy
-
Sandy, you lead a very interesting life in the country. I have never heard of frogs using windows for toilets. Love the image.
-
Lol Sandy it is almost poetic with all the rhyming words (goo, loo and poo ;D) -don't have the frog problems, just dirty windows so will put it to use anyway ;)
-
How versatile this goo is becoming. I wonder if it would help keep cats from marking their territory on your front door (my neighbour has this problem) by washing things down with it.
-
I think I remember something about avoiding the use of ammonia based cleaning products to clean up cat and dog urine - as ammonia is one of the naturally occurring substances in urine (to mark territory) and it then actually encourages the cat/dog to return to that spot to wee again - it might have the opposite effect and the neighbourhood cats may flock to your neighbours judydawn!! :(
-
yes, i think you can make ammonia by collecting your wee!
-
LOL ....I think we'd better stop there Karen - or one of us will be coming up with a recipe for that one in the TM ! ;D
I will be making a new batch of washing goop soon (first lot has lasted good 3 weeks - we do a wash or two every day) and will try it with bicarb instead of ammonia and will let you all know how it goes.
Ali
-
I am also not too keen on the ammonia smell - I am going to try another recipe this week - check this website for lots of variations. It does work quite well but difficult to pour into container as so thick.

Off to buy borax and washing soda today :)

Thanks for that info alioop, would have been a disaster to use the goo in that situation. Neighbour wouldn't have been a happy chappy at all. Apparently sprinkling white pepper around helps solve this problem I found by googling.
-
You're very welcome Judy :). I did have a bit of a smile at the thought of hundreds of cats trotting towards your neighbours door! and your neighbours face! :o.
Intrepidtrier, I reckon the frogs might not like it due to the fact that it's the smell their main predators leave behind!!?
Gotta love that goop. :)
-
Well, I made the batch of washing machine goo/foam. It seems to have gone well, and I have done a couple of washes with it and they seem to be good. Definitely no nasty odour when using the goo YAY ;D. The dried washing probably doesn't smell as strongly (the nice sort of smell) as with the one with ammonia and maybe not quite as soft, but they smell clean and fresh and it's done the job on socks and underarms of clothes etc.
I followed the instruction for goo and just added a cup of bicarb that had been dissolved in 1ltr of hot water to the final mix before putting in bottles - I will try to get to the washing machine goo thread today and post how I did it.
Here's a pic too, don't how clear it will come up, but hopefully gives an idea of final consistency it's a bit like thick cream. :)
Ali
-
Looks good -might move it to the washing machine thread?
-
Thanks Thermomixer! ;D ;D
If anyone needs more detailed info on what exactly I did for the bicarb alternative (instead of ammonia), let me know.
-
Thanks for trialing this Ali. I need a safe grey water option so I will give this a go too.
Chelsea :)
-
Ended up with a stain the size of a 50 cent piece (olive oil) on the front of one of my blouses. Threw it in the washing machine with a load of clothes with the goo but it didn't come out so I coated it with more goo and let it sit for 24 hours, rinsed it off and hey presto, stain gone. Phew, lucky one as I had meant to use stain remover on it before adding it to the wash. Gotta love that goo ;) ;) ;)
-
Alioop,
Yes please I would love to know exactly what you did for the bicarb alternative.
My Dear Partner type man complained tonight that the towels smell like dogs urine (he didn't actually use the word urine though) ever since I started using the home made washing goop.
-
Hi ermy...... :)
Well, I did the basic grinding up of the soap bars (I used Velvet soap bars) and added the water and mixed in the TM as per the usual instructions. I then separately dissolved 1 cup of bicarb in 1 ltr of hot water in another container. I used a bucket to mix the the soap mix and bicarb water together (give a really good mix so that the soap mix and bicarb water combine fully together and do not separate when pouring into bottles/containers). If you notice some separation of the two mixes in the bottles give them a really good shake (this what I did and the mix has stayed combined). The smell is a lot more subtle in this mix, but it seems to have been cleaning the clothes fine.
Next time I might try putting some vinegar in the bottles and pouring the soap mix on top of it (instead of using the bicarb mix) as I'm pretty sure this should work fine too.
Hope your DP likes this one better!! :D
-
Many thanks Alioop.
I will make this tomorrow morning and report back. I would make it tonight however the neighbours might think that i'm chainsawing the house down with the incredible noise the thermomixer makes while breaking up the velvet soap. ;D
-
some have tried adding essential oils, is there any reports back on that yet??
-
I made the goo about 3 - 4 weeks ago in my processor before I got my TM.
Yes, this problem occurs with all homemade washing powders (or goos ;D), apparently because it doesn't have the laundry blue (aka brightener) which bought powders do. It used to be available everywhere, when it was standard to make your own laundry goo, and was added by housewives to the wash. Now, I can't find any for 'normal' people to buy, except for 1 company in the States. And it seemed a bit extreme to me to order it in from the States - even I draw the line somewhere ;D :D
So, the route I'm following at present is to alternate. This time I use homemade, next time I use shop bought. That's worked so far. Wish I could buy laundry blue, though ...
-
those using the velvet soap, where have you been getting it?
-
I'll have a look today while I'm in town at work Karen - it will either be Woolworths, Coles or IGA as that's all we have down here! :)
-
Brazen I got mine from Woolies.
Caroline, yes that's what I've been doing, alternating. Also when using the goo I have been adding some Oxy White granules to each load, bought from the cheap shop, to hopefully give a boost.
To be honest when this lot has been used up, I won't make any more, but it was worth giving it a shot. :)
-
I buy mine at Coles Karen
-
hmmm i have looked in coles and woollies and could only find the sunlight / homebrand equivalent (pretty sure rowyfo found the same here too)
-
Hi Karen - yes got some more Velvet today at local Woolworths in laundry isle up with pre-wash stain removers etc. It's made by Pental Products Pty Ltd and email is enquiries@pental.com.au - you might want to email them to find distributors over there if any. If you want some sent over let me know. I think there's about 5 cakes in the box and I got 2 batches of goop from this.
CarolineW - I also found some "Bluo" at woolies (next to the Velvet) which is a optical brightener, which I think is what you were talking about? It's made by Pascoes Pty Ltd 14 Casino st Welshpool WA 6106. consumer info 1800 065 326. Hope that helps. Again I can send you some if you can't get easily. :)
-
Hi alioop. Thanks so much - and you've inspired me to have another go at seeing if I can find it. I'm trying the new search string of 'laundry brightener', thanks to your posting :-* I haven't found a retail outlet as yet, but it gives me a specific name to use other than 'laundry blue' when asking at supermarkets too. I'll let you know how I get on ...
-
You're very welcome CarolineW ;D. I should think that if little old West Aus has a place where it's made that there should be somewhere in the UK that does too :) (some think we are a bit behind over here in WA :o, not me of course!! Then again, maybe it just never left the supermarket shelves from the 70's!!) :-\ ;).
Ali
-
Then again, maybe it just never left the supermarket shelves from the 70's!!) :-\ ;). Ali
ROFL Ali, you could possibly be right (and I can say that being a West Aussie too)
-
.............and then we need it. I have been guilty of going to small supermarkets hoping that they have something I need on their shelves.
I like the slow pace we have here in WA. Probably matches me, but who cares, I enjoy it.
-
Yep Cookie, doesn't bother me either. I think if it is all you are used to then you don't know what you are missing ;) ;)
-
i know this is a big hit with alot of people but i wasnt that impressed..dont know if i did something wrong..came out like thick goo and wow the amonia gets up your nose but that i didnt care about it was more the fact that it doesnt get out the stains from my kids clothes and i seemed to have alot of stained clothes coming out of the wash..so i dont nkow if there are any ideas otherwise im going back to my usual washing liquid! A pity as i loved the idea of making my own washing liquid just didnt find its working for me or more my kids clothes!
-
I think people are doing the powdered one now frozzie
http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=1843.0
-
thanks JD im a bit behind the times lol will give the powder a go..hopefully that will work better!
:)
-
I have read that excess buubbles created by normal washing detergent is because of the sodium laurel sulphate that the manufacturers. So this healhier alternative shouldn't froth up as much making it suitable for front (end???) loaders.
-
katharyne check out the powdered detergent only because number one it smells a whole lot better than the goo and i find it cleans better and most people are now doing the powder as jd mentioned...i have front end loaders and have had no problem with either...but the amonia smell is very strong with the goo.. Judydawn has posted the link just above if you wanted to check it out..
