I have been having a lovely time with my Thermomix - but mainly (only) making delicious but everyday food for the family. I am having a dinner party this weekend and wondered what other members had served with a bit of wow factor that came out of the Thermomix?
-
I can't help you there Bickie as I have only really cooked for the family. Although I took some dinner rolls to a friends place once and they devoured them in no time and commented on how nice they were.
I'm sure someone else will give you some ideas. Sounds like fun.

Bickie here are a few of my favourite recipes for entertaining.
Prawn Crepes (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=3601.0) or if you are not seafood loving people you can use the Honey mustard chicken (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=5129.0) as a filling instead.
I made the Chicken & Leek Filo Pie (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=6719.0) for friends and she has made it so many times for her friends since. Use fresh filo pastry from the dairy cabinet, not the frozen variety, it is too hard to work with.
Anytime I've made Nico's Thai Chilli Chicken & Basil (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=784.0) my guests have gone home with the recipe to make themselves.
I've made Proscuitto Rolled Chicken Breast in Cream Sauce (non-TMX) and once again it has been made by my guests for their friends on numerous occasions. I haven't tried this (http://mythermomixhints.wordpress.com/2011/09/06/proscuitto-rolled-chicken-breast-in-cream-sauce/) recipe but by all accounts it is very good.
For a beef option, both CP and myself have cooked a standing rib of beef in the varoma following the recipe you will find here (http://www.ukthermomix.com/recshow.php?rec_id=136) from the UK Thermomix site. A discussion about roasting meat in the varoma can be found here (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=5692.0) and if it is a meal for a very special occasion you are wanting, this certainly has the wow factor. Our reviews, methods & photos are on page 2 of that thread. I also made this (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=4604.0) recipe for Yorkshire Puddings to serve with mine - Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding, can't beat that.
That's my quick selection off the top of my head but others will add their favourites I'm sure.

Anything from The British Larder website. Weekend before last I did her cheese brûlée for starter, venison meatballs for main and blood orange panna cotta for dessert. Starter and dessert done early afternoon and into the fridge (I think they could/ should be done the day before)
The friends who came round asked me for the website address so they could do 2 of the courses this weekend for more friends of theirs!! High praise!

I do ILB chocolate cake all the time, Then cut and fill with ice cream. I put 2 flavors of ice cream in. ( add crunchies, or peppermint crisp to the ice cream too.)
Always has the WOW factor.
then ice with chocolate and frozen berries on top.

The salmon crepe torte from Teninas' For Foods Sake is delicious and would make a lovely entree and from the same book a beautiful dessert is the caramel buttercream filled sponge roll. You can't go past the sticky date pudding in the EDC.
-
Haven't really had any dinner parties either, still got my 'L' plates. But I have 'wowed' friends with the Swedish Ice Cream Cheesecake. Make some bread rolls too - always impressive!
-
Thanks guys - great ideas, the British Larder site is incredible - thank you for pointing it out to me. I will definitely make some home made bread rolls as well - I have them nailed - and you're right, when you make them so often for your family, you forget that to a guest it is quite impressive to be given home made bread rolls! My cunning Plan A is to use the Thermomix to make lots of margarita's first - which should ensure whatever follows is met with enthusiastic applause and wonderment at my superior skills.
-
Now the margaritas are a brilliant plan Bickie lol. Make sure they have a few before you feed them and the whole night will be a huge success. :)
-
I can vouch for TM Margaritas!

Absolutely, won't matter what you cook after a few margaritas.
-
I'm bumping this thread because I have to cook dinner for the Mr's boss and wife soon and I'm looking for some ideas to Wow them!
-
Snappy , whats your theme?
H :)
-
Umm no theme as such! I've got 2 kids under 5 so I don't have a lot of prep time. Ideally, I would find some sensational dish that I can part prepare a night or two before hand and just cook it the day of. I'm thinking of some individual golden syrup puddings for dessert and will make custard to accompany on the day.
No ideas for a main though!

Hi snappy, I have done a few dinner parties since posting the question - it has been quite cold over here in uk so did individual beef and Guinness pies, served with creamy horseradish mash, one time I did chicken Maryland in tandoori paste (make day before and cook on night) with raita and home made naan, and the seafood risottos are quite impressive - either the lemon and prawns one i think in dinner spinner or I did a champagne and scallop one, and seafood lasagne also has wow factor - make béchamel and instead of bolognaise - do a citrusy tomato sauce with seafood mix. good for making the day before. Hope that helps - and I stick by my stragegy of making margaritas to set the evening up perfectly!
-
If you have the indian cookbook, you could do the butter chicken & another curry. You can make them the day before. Naan bread & rice on the day.
H :)
-
A nice soup with homemade bread, perhaps a curry that can be made the day before or pies and something delicious and fattening for sweets. Something like a pannacotta could be made the day before as could coulis to put over it.
-
I have served Chelsea's seafood risotto to "company", also have had a lot of success with curry dinners, if you have the Indian cookbook. Can make these well ahead and a bit of naan bread too always look impressive.
I have had a lot of success with Nico's arancini for fingerfood, from the entertaining with Nico leaflet, too, but wouldn't serve that with risotto--kind of a rice overkill!

Then rice pudding for dessert. :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

Steam salmon in the varoma with new potatoes in the basket and snow peas above and serve with citrussy hollandaise. Follow with creme brulee - winner every time.
-
Wow, some great ideas on here. I do like the curry ideas, but one thing I didn't mention is I am not a seafood eater! I can't believe how many seafood recipes there are!
I think I will go with a curry, basmati rice and naan breads. Tasty and easy to prepare.
Thanks for everyone's suggestions
-
Snappy, it's not sorbet weather here in Victoria, but I often serve sorbet after an Indian meal, with cardamom biscuits, as desert.
-
I was just thinking that my steamed golden syrup puddings wouldn't be the best match for Indian!
-
I think goden syrup puddings would be fantastic after ANY meal! Yum, I love that type of comfort food.
-
Having friends for lunch today and was planning on the garlic prawn risotto but just found out that neither are that fussed on seafood. I think that a risotto would still be the best idea but was looking for a bit of a "stand out" recipe. Any suggestions for a good risotto recipe for entertaining?
-
Sorry no-one got back to you on this one today Twitterpated, what did you end up doing? My favourite is always with prawns so that would be my number 1 choice and, like you, I also have friends who do not eat seafood.
-
What sort of risotto did you end up making twitterpatted?
-
Is the recipe for Nico's arancini on the forum or someone able to PM it to me? Arancini is one our favourite nibbly food.
-
I ended up making Faffa's Roasted Pumpkin and Fetta Risotto. Well I wanted a stand-out recipe and this is definitely it. I roasted the pumpkin with some sprigs of rosemary and added some pre-cooked diced chicken and pine nuts as well. It was delicious served with garlic bread and freshly made lemonade. Will definitely make again and will add to my list of dinner party recipes.
-
Sounds very tasty twitterpatted.
Wonder there is a thread to Nico's arancini and I have feeling CP has the recipe and
Fundj makes her mum's recipe which would be worth a go.
-
I just put a small ball of boccini cheese into my risotto ball, egg & crumb & I shallow fry.
Any risotto would work for sure, a big fav in our house.
H :)

Here's (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=8709.0;topicseen) a discussion on nico's arancini balls which may help Wonder.
-
Thanks everyone, especially Judy. We have made arancini in the past with left over risotto - pumpkin, pine nut and bacon is a favourite of ours. I was interested to see Nicco's recipe.
-
Wonder I can pm the recipe if you still want it--the base risotto was fairly plain, so I'm sure that the ones you have made would be just as lovely. It have found his recipe handy for those times when you don't have leftover risotto and are starting from scratch.
-
I would love to have the recipe too please Lellyj.
-
Will send it on t o you soon, Tasty!
