Title: Finally realised maybe I do too much, LOL
Post by: Halex on March 09, 2012, 09:35:32 pm
Have been in pain on & off since December. Sometimes its mild & niggly, other times its not nice at all. Woke me up at 4am this morning.

Went to the Dr.s this week, was sent for  an xray & ct scan, I have a protuding L5 disc, basically a slipped disc.

The cause if this yes sad to say exercise!!! Swimming breastroke doing around 40-50 laps. I love swimming my laps.

Off to see a physio on monday, exercises and not sure what else.

I am p*****off. Why shoud I slow down, I love doing things at a million miles an hour.

Have to try and get this better as I planned on lots of snorkeling on our cruise.

It's always a relief to find out what is causing  pain Hally - next problem is how to fix it.  Hopefully they will be able to do something for you but it will probably take time and with just 2 weeks to your cruise, don't get your hopes up too much.  As long as you are still able to go, that's the main thing.   :-*

Ouch, bad backs are horrible. But because you are fit then hopefully the recovery will be much quicker for you. Maybe a little change in your exercise routine is needed. I always though swimming was great for injuries?

Hally, in 2004 I fractured my L4 vertebra and blew out the discs above and below it.  I was encouraged to exercise in the pool to strengthen my muscles without having to work against gravity (which required wearing a clamshell "corset").

My physical therapist said the only swim stroke I should use was the side stroke, which keeps the back in alignment with allowing maximum leg motion.  It worked well for me.  I healed without needing surgery. (Predicted by both an orthopedic surgeon and a neurosurgeon) with help from my boss, also an orthopedic surgeon who advised against surgery.
The therapist  forbid  breast stroke and crawl.

Thank you everyone, I am just really p****** off more than anything. I exercise to keep myself fit & healthy.

Mind you my xray showed a lovely spine with great spacing.

Andi, I must admit I thought swimming was good. I ended up doing the laps as the back & legs were sore so I thought I was doing the right thing.

Andi, How long did you take to heal?  Well done on fixing without surgery, surgery is not an option anyone wants.

Doing sidestroke whikst snorkelling will be challenging :-))

Dh woke up & said to ds ohoh mummy doesnt look hapoy this morning.

Hally I would have thought swimming should strengthen your back mayby try freestyle as breastroke is a unique and a lot of people end up with injuries. Hope you feel better soon.

Just a thought Hally when you do your breaststroke do you swim with you head constantly out of the water as that would cause strain. Same as freestyle.

I can only imagine your pain and frustration!!

Get well soon  :-* :-*

Hally do take care of your back. I have severe problems with my neck due to degenerative disc problems. I can go for weeks without pain but then I can have it for weeks too. It is a pain in the ...................neck!
Do whatever you have to, to keep it healthy. Hopefully a physio will be able to help. If you're not happy with one try another.
Take care.

Bugger - I'm like you and love my swimming, will happily do laps and laps rather than be in the gym! I will be extra cautious now.

Hope you physio can give you some tips to manage the pain as well as help keep you so active  :-* :-* :-*

So sorry to hear of your injury Hally. I'm sure your physio will be able to give you exercises and a suitable swimming stroke
so that you will be able to keep swimmingly fit. Take care of your back, you only get one.
I am especially aware of this. Even after over 30yrs of nursing I have never had a back problem - which is amazing considering I trained with Florence Nightingale and did some horrid lifts in the old days.

Oh, Hally, I feel for you. Swimming was on my physio list when I had a spinal fusion some years ago. Mind you, I'm not a waterbaby, so it was one of the exercises that didn't get done too often! It doesn't seem fair when you exercise for your wellbeing!

Injuries are not fun for anyone. And a lot of them take weeks and weeks to improve (especially as we get a little older). I hope you have a speedy recovery Hally.

I had to wear the rigid clamshell brace for 7 - 8 months but that was largely because of my age and osteoporosis.
It has to be readjusted several times because my weight changed a bit and I had some skin irritation until they applied a neoprene lining with an inner lining of a silky fabric that wicks moisture away from the skin.  After the first six weeks I could take it off for sleep, as long as I didn't turn onto either side but I had an adjustable bed (still have it) so this worked okay.
After the clamshell was no longer needed, I continued to wear an open brace for several more months, when driving, when doing anything that might put stress on the vertebra.  During all this time I had a lot of nerve pain and some numbness here and there, mostly in my right leg and foot and there was some weakness in that leg.  I had several EMGs (electromyograms) to check the nerves in the leg, no fun at all, and a few MRIs to see how the bone was healing and if the discs were changing.  The one disc bulge was quite large but fortunately I have a large space for my spinal cord so it was not compressed too much and the disc bulge gradually shrunk over the next few years - the last MRI in '08 showed it was half the size it had been originally.  So time does heal, as long as there is no further injury to the area.  I don't do any heavy lifting or pushing, pulling on heavy things.  (Pushing a regular vacuum is very stressful and pulling the hose to the built in one is almost as bad so I just avoid it.)

Of course I want an instant fix!LOL, dont we all.

Yesteray the pain woke me up at 4am. Today just a slight niggle, so hoping today is a good pain free, well close to it day. The pain varies daily ??? ??? ???

Good to hear your recovery should be quick and hope you get to enjoy your cruise ...

Dh still spends most days lying down and has to be careful about not losing sensation in his legs as apparently you Only have 6 hours to get to emergency before the muscle dies .. Was relevant in his case as the ciatique nerve is involved hence the ongoing pain and pins and needles.. He has to do regular self tests to check he still has the correct sensation in his leg.. Not fun stuff back probs...I've had enflamed discs in same region l5 but nerve isn't touched so I get by however the only exercise I'm allowed to do is swimming or aqua gym .. Everything else is out..
