Title: Has anybody tried ....?
Post by: CarolineW on April 28, 2009, 03:45:17 pm
I often look at a recipe which looks interesting, but very different, and wonder if anyone else has tried it yet, and what they thought of it.  Of course, the recipe reviews and tweaking thread covers this to some degree, thanks to the lovely people who take the time to post there.  But not every recipe tried gets posted there, of course (because of people like me!  sorry guys - will try to do better).

So, here's kicking off with a recipe I've wondered about but not yet had the guts to try.  Has anyone tried the Gajar Halva - carrot pudding on p57 of the Gluten Free cookbook?  (or indeed tried a Gajar Halva anywhere?)  I'm keen to try it, but am being put off by the 'pudding' bit, in case it's like German/American pudding texture (blamange / cold custard type).  That texture and I are not on visiting terms!  ;D

no i haven't tried it, but in my experience halva is a firm mix, kind of like fudge but firmer

The times that I have seen it in restaurants it is served in pieces like cake/slice.

Don't recipe in front of me, bu it may be possible to cook longer and let it set - think polenta - can be runny but sets firm and cuttable.

Great - thanks.  I'll give it a go then.

Caroline, Sorry I haven't tried this TM recipe, but have made this Indian dessert a few times  It's very sweet so you don't need much and I usually would serve it with cream or icecream.  In India they usually serve it with just a sprinkling of chopped almonds.

Thanks Trudy - does it come as a hot pudding usually in India with slivered almonds on top?  I am not a dessert person, but the ones I have seen were cold as slices.

Thanks for the tip, Judy.  I'll do that.

In Israel and also here in Spain there is Halva, its like a thick fudge like consistency but very oily too! Must be from all the nuts! Give it a go, and if its not a success you can make ice-cream with it!!! ;D ;D ;D

Googled and found that it seems to be served as a pudding and slices.

Hi Thermomixer,

Yes in India they serve it as a warm desert usually with cream - or that is how I have had it served.  It's very sweet (like all Indian deserts) so icecream or cream can take the edge off the sweetness.
