Title: Recipe review Swiss Cheese & Ham Pastries pge 32 For Food's Sake
Post by: judydawn on February 26, 2012, 07:53:50 am
We loved these little pastries, so simple to make if you use bought pastry sheets.  I only cooked 2 squares (4 triangles) and have frozen the 4 remaining uncooked pastries.  Great one Tenina.

I tried to reduce some calories by using puff pastry instead of butter puff pastry, skim milk instead of whole milk and light sour cream.

Yes, good one CC - got to get those calories down as much as we can.  I think these would be lovely made even smaller for finger food at parties, more fiddly to make but it could be done and frozen ready to just cook when needed.

Great idea JD. I think I will make finger food sized ones and freeze.

You could also use filo pastry mcmich and make those little triangles. Bit fiddly but would be well worth the effort for the freezer and quick finger food snacks.

I love these too CC, theyre really tasty.  I usually make a batch and freeze uncooked as they are a handy thing to have for unexpected guests or a quick meal for a weekend.  Just leave the glazing part until you are ready to cook them.  I've actually made little ones for our high tea so I hope they are as nice as the big ones  ;)

Well after seeing Cornish's pastries today I had to have a go. ;D

I had everything in including the light sour cream and reduced fat milk but I didn't have the cheese as stated.  I did have a block of Wensleydale cheese with cranberries in the fridge nearing its use by date, so thought I would use that.  I used all the 200g block and the same amount of shaved ham between the 6 pastry sheets.
We both had one for lunch today which we loved and I have made a note to try using a spoonful of the cherry chutney inside before baking next time and see what that's like.  Any tasty cheese would work.  I've put the other 4 squares in the freezer for other times.

I used the left over egg white to brush both the tops before baking and to seal around the edges of pastry before folding. So Yum !  :D

With ham left over from Christmas this would be the perfect time to make these. The photo looks ever so tempting JulieO.

Lovely Julie, I'm a puff pastry tragic and I love these too.  I just use any cheese, I rarely buy different cheeses.

I thought we might have them for Sunday night dinner. We usually have something light and sort of easy.
