I didn't know where to put this but you have got to see this recipe. It seems so bizarre I just had to try it and my DH fell in love not with Nigella but with the dish.🍲🍲🍲🍲.
I used Philly cream , cherry tomatoes and it was moorish.

What a hoot. I can see kids loving this one and people tweaking it to death!

OMG - I saw this one this morning, took one look at the name - and left! Could NOT imagine anything worse!! But then I read your post, Gretchen, and horror turned to . . . mmmmmmm, maybe! ;D ;D ;D
Can't guarantee that I'll ever get to try it but it just goes to show it's a bit of "you can't judge a recipe by its title!" ;D ;D

I am telling you goldfish that I loved it. DH said if he had not seen me put the Vegemite in he would not have known and that is true as I do use Vegemite in lots of stews casseroles and such like.
Funny thing is that the Philly cream seemed to mellow out the salty flavour of the Vegemite so I had to add a bit more Vegemite at the end.
What I really liked is that Helene made the Vegemite the star of the dish and not just a flavour added thing . Whatever is a Canadian doing thinking VEGEMITE.? And Nigella too? How did this happen that an Aussie didn't think this one first? Or maybe someone had and was keeping it a secret.
Yes it is a crazy thing but it works and I can see this as a great after school snack for kids . Something they can make themselves or reheat or even eat cold. We are having it again on Thursday for breakfast with lamingtons. You gotta love it!
Try it goldfish. You won't be disappointed or disgusted. It really works.
My vegan daughter in law is making this for her children as we speak replacing Philly cream with regular Philly. Apparently there is gelatin in the Philly cream. Live and learn eh?

Same here I really thought yuck that sounds discussing. But I guess we can say to much without trying it first. Bit like lettuce soup and green smoothies for me they don't sound very appealing but I have never tried either so can't say to much.

Couldn't agree more . Took me 2 years to try Vegemite when I first came to Australia over 45 years ago. I could not get past the smell but now I love it. Give yourself a treat and make a small amount. You could even melt some butter, Vegemite and sour cream, cream,Philly cream or cream cheese in the microwave and pour it over pasta or rice just to get the flavour of it. Too easy. If you find it disgusting then give it to the dog or cat or ME!

Ha ha :D Very funny Gretchen and thanks for mentioning my blog and recipe :-*
I just figured if it's good enough for Nigella, it's probably good for a few Aussies. ;) Plus... well... I've always preferred salty foods over the sweets, so I was willing to be a guinea pig on this one.
I agree with Dede -- you never know until you try. One recipe where this is especially true is Kale Chips. They are amazing and yet, most people won't attempt them unless they've first tasted them somewhere. I can't blame people for this, as the recipe name just sounds so weird. The truth is that whenever I take Kale Chips to a party they are the absolute biggest hit of all that is on the table. People LOVE them and can't stop eating them. (Here they are all the rage in 100g bags at the health food shops for $7 per bag :o ) I think part of the appeal is that they take people by surprise and by enjoying Kale Chips we learn something new about ourselves. It makes us feel like we're 'growing' in some way and that's such a good feeling.
It was making the Kale chips that eventually led me to buy a dehydrator. At first I used the oven, then bought a cheap dehydrator at the op shop and then moved up to a full on Excalibur model so I can make larger batches more easily. All this is of course, because of Thermomix :-*
But I digress so now I should probably include a link to the recipe after all this blabbing about Kale chips... in case anyone is interested, it's here:

Happy Aussie Day everyone!
:)

Helene I reckon you could replace the soy or tamari sauce with vegemite and then you would have Aussie Kale Chips!
Gert

Thanks Gretchen, you've inspired me to try Vegemite Spaghetti. :)
I saw it on your blog today Helene and I had the words yuck, yuck going through my head. An inspirational idea for an Australia Day dinner! :D I think I'll announce to my family that we're having Vegemite spaghetti for dinner on 26th. I just hope they don't all find excuses to be elsewhere.
I looked at the recipe for Kale chips, hmmm interesting......

;D ;D ;D ok - you've convinced me . . . it's on the menu for tomorrow!! Can't wait to see the expressions when I announce what we're having - ;D ;D ;D !! Thanks Gretchen and thank you, Helene!!

Oh yes Judy. I did try it and it was yummy. I used that Philly cream then put cherry tomatoes in at the end. They softened and added a bit of colour to it. The sauce turned out just right smooth and slightly salty but not too salty.I was thinking what yuk at first but had to do it and was very surprised and you always have the ingredients in the house. I like fundj's idea of the ricotta.
Helene is an amazing person alright. What is she up to with a shop coming soon? What could it be?
-
I have all this in my pantry, and will try it tomorow.
Thanks, Robyn

Lol! That is the beauty of this recipe. Everyone has the ingredients so there is no excuse not to try it! You could even use whatever cheese you have to make the sauce if you don't have sour cream, cream or Philly.
I think it is good fun even if you never eat it again!

Sometimes you just can't imagine what something will taste like with unusual ingredients like this Spaghetti recipe of my mum's. The base is bacon, onion and capsicum, fried in a little oil and the sauce is chutney, tomato sauce and cheese. I've since modified it and thicken it with extra water and cornflour. It's amazingly delicious!
-
Thank you Helene and Gretchen. I just know this will be yummy. Like you Gretchen I often put vegemite into various things.
-
just dont tell them chdv ;D
hah, this will be interesting to see who is home tomorrow night for dinner. Actually I had to ask my daughter to go pick up some Vegemite in from Orel Füssli /the English bookstore on the Bahnhofstrasse in Zürich, today. I just looked at the price 7.90 SFr for a 200 G jar! That's about $8.
She asked me why I needed the Vegemite, so I told her. The response was "oh, yuck no, please can't you make lamingtons, instead of Vegemite spaghetti for Australia Day"

I work with the motto, 'what they don't know won't hurt them.'
Last night a guest asked if there was cream cheese in the Swiss Icecream cake, I muttered something about cream and eggs and stuff. They enjoyed it. :-\
-
Well, I was game to try this one - it made a quick lunch and both DH and myself enjoyed it immensely. Thanks Helene for the recipe and Gretchen for alerting us to it. I'm sure kids would love this but why should they get all the good stuff ;D
-
Hey Judydawn, that's GREAT! I'm so glad you tried it AND enjoyed it, but the icing on the cake for me is your photo :-* :-* :-*
Thanks so much for taking that great shot 8) and for posting it! I have to admit to you now, that I'm not always logged in when I look at the forum :-[. I saw your response here but didn't even realize you have posted a photo until after I logged in to reply. Let this be a lesson to any "lurkers" out there. Register for this forum now :o so you can enjoy the full-colour edition ;)
Cheers,
H.
ps - Now I'm going back to my original blog post to insert a link for this thread so more people can read all your comments :)

Great tip for lurkers Helene, fancy not being able to see all the lovely photos JulieO & Maddy post - mine are not in the same league as theirs but at least gives an idea of what the dish looks like. Glad to have tried your recipe, you never know until you try these things and as far as a budget meal goes, this one fits the bill nicely.
-
I can't wait to try it JD. It would be a great alternative to takeaway when I can't be bothered cooking. :)
-
We're having it tonight.
-
talk about secret ingredient!
slightly off topic, is there a substitute for kale in the kale chips?
-
We ended up having it tonight too Cookie, although just the basic nigella version without the veg. I just grated the parmesan and cooked the spaghetti in the TM and did the butter and vegemite in a mug in the microwave (shocking I know). It was super easy though and about all I could manage tonight. DH wasn't home but the kids and I loved it. My youngest doesn't even like vegemite but he really enjoyed this. I think this recipe will be handy down the track when I'm looking to fill hungry teenage tummies quickly. A very good find Helene!!! ;D
-
Gosh, I have been making pasta with Marmite for years, although have never tried it in the TMX so will give it a go. I don't any veg, just some chopped, fried garlic and chillies mived in with it and then sprinkle it with some strong cheese. Delicious :)

I made Helene's version tonight for a quick tea after surf club. It didn't go down as well with the troops though. They love their veg but I think the mushie flavour was a bit strong for them. Worth a try though and we will definitely keep making the basic version. :)
-
Aww, sorry to hear this Chelsea, and thanks so much for giving it a go. So interesting how we all have such differing tastes... that recipe doesn't have quite enough "mushy flavour" for me... but your troops found it to be too much. I guess that's why this forum is so important, cuz it gives us a place to share notes and experiences, to learn and try, and tweak for our own families. Thanks again for trying it out Chelsea :)
Maybe next time, you could add a little truffle oil on top of the mushrooms. :o NOT! JUST KIDDING ;D :D ;)
-
As muchbaseveryone is saying this is good im not sure it would go down too well here ... Anti vegemite house here.. Im the only one who touches it and its not that often and every local who i have got to try it hates it... Great laugh though!!
-
😊 They're only little white lies...
-
Well I am definitely going to give this a go. Pre umami paste I put marmite in loads of things.
Will have to be marmite though as DH is a Kiwi and that's what he grew up on and won't think of
having vegemite.
