I am trying to establish a household cleaning roster for myself and was wondering if any of you use one. eg monday's for sweeping and mopping, tuesday's washing etc
-
If only I was that organised :D
I am sure someone here can help you though, and who knows they may inspire me to get a bit more of a routine happening :o

Can't beat http://flylady.net/ !!!!! Just brilliant!!

Since having my son 9 weeks ago, I've set up myself up with a roster and it has been great. I have set it up so I have daily, once a week, once a month and once a quarter jobs.
We had saved up to get a cleaner for the first 3 months but so far I haven't felt the need to get one. So I figure that money can go towards a new wardrobe for me once I lose the extra pregnancy kgs.
Since doing it, the house has never been cleaner and I don't feel like I do housework all day. The jobs for each day generally only take 30 mins.
-
Goldfish - am checking out the site atm
Keiramax - would you care to share your roster with us or parts of it, when you have time?
-
Everyday
washing, hang on clothes horse
empty dishwasher in the morning, ready for the day of dirty dishes. Can get this done while waiting for the kettle
Quick enjo mop of the floorboards on non vacuuming days
prep dinner when kids are in bed in the morning makes cooking at night so much easier, especially now with my TM
Weekly jobs
Sunday - strip beds, wash sheets/towels and make beds - nothing better than clean sheets on a sunday after a busy weekend usually outside in the garden
Monday - vacuum whole house and mop main living area - whole house is floor boards, de-cobweb
Tuesday - clean upstairs bathroom
Wednesday - clean downstairs bathroom, rubbish bins
Thursday - dusting (furniture, window sills, skirting boards) trying to declutter these surfaces to make this an easy job
Friday - vacuum whole house and mop bedrooms
I clean the fridge the night before a big shop, easy to do when the fridge is empty
Managed to clean the pantry on the weekend, so picked a date in 3 months time in the diary to do again
By no means does my house sparkle, but at least I get the basics done.
-
This makes me feel really hopeless, ive always thought of our house as clean but it would never have seen a vacuum twice a week - well done!
-
I have two dogs and a cat who come inside and a 18 month old who constantly points out the dust balls or eats them. Floorboards are alot easier than carpet.
-
I have a daily / weekly roster and my older kids all have their own chores as well. The two little ones are helping out where needed at the moment (i.e. if one of their brothers is sick or still at work they have to help either DH or I do their chore) along with their beds and rooms every day.
No way is my house spotless but it certainly is liveable and clean.
Also if I happen to be sick then everyone know what needs to be done to help me out so I don't have a huge catch up when I get back on my feet.
I am the same and find it helps me feel as though I am not spending all my day doing house work. ;D
-
I am not a routine person, I do what needs to be done when I feel like it. I do the basics everyday but I can go into my bedroom to make the bed, pick up the paper from the end of the bed and take it out to the green bin and somehow get stuck into the garden and end up filling the green bin. Hours later, take something to my bedroom and see I haven't made my bed yet :-)) Certainly no routine with housework but with caring for DH, well that's another matter and I am very good with my routine there ;D With me it is all about priorities.
-
I have a cleaning lady that comes once a week. My job is to pay her.
-
Love it DD!!
We are talking of a cleaning lady this year for us ... the older kidlets are even talking of paying more board to go towards paying her so that they can get out of their chores :D :D :D
-
Katheryn when our adult dd moved back home while waiting for a house to become available we made her pay a third of the cost of the cleaning lady. She wasn't impressed but we gave her the option of doing her share of the cleaning instead and she opted to pay.
There is only DW and myself so there really isn't alot of cleaning needed but we both work hard and I spend a couple of hours a day training for triathlons. I would rather pay someone to clean so we can enjoy our time away from work.
-
I suppose I sort of have a roster. There's daily jobs like floor, beds, dishes, cooking etc. I do a house clean on Mondays and do the ironing. DD vacuums on Sundays. Wednesdays I shop for food. Fridays I go the bigger shopping centre and do the bits there and maybe meet someone for coffee.
But all that is variable and is often changed at the drop of a hat. I visit a couple of very old (90 this year for one) friends. It all got messed up today as DD had a fall at work and injured her knee. She is on crutches for 3 days and then 1 crutch for a few days. I had rather a big chuckle as she is very unco-ordinated and seeing her use the crutches is painful for both of us. She had to be picked up from work and then her car picked up as well. She said she is bored already. I guess that happens when you're busy all the time. I'm going to sit her at the bench tomorrow and she can make bread. ;)
-
I could NEVER have a roster. My life is too unpredictable.
My DH changes his mind about what he's doing at the drop of a hat and my job is to run around after him. During harvest I had to go out to the farm at least 3 times a day!
Then, if I receive a whole lot of Skinflint orders, (as I did today) everything gets put on the back burner while I check stock, pack and post if I have stock or make products, then label, then pack and post.
I do a full clean once a week, but it's always on different days. Big jobs like windows, cleaning of fridge etc. get done when I have time.
I envy people who can organise their lives so easily. Dashingden, I'd love to have a cleaner. I have both sons home at the moment working here, so should have though to charge board and use it to pay a cleaner. Trouble is, when kids are home helping on the farm, it doesn't count....

When mine first had a whinge about the amount of board (oh and they don't pay much cause when the amount was first set the eldest he was only an apprentice :o) I offered for them to go 1/7 in ALL the household bills - soon changed their minds and they now realise they are really on a good wicket :D :D :D

If I was to post here it would be an essay. So I'm not going to say a thing.... :-X :-X :-X
...well maybe that it feels that I do everything :D
... :-X sometimes, one person may do something...but most times its left up to me and DH to keep the house running ticketyboo...and then most times I have to clean up after DH cos he must be Blind Freddy if he thinks he's cleaned properly...

If the boys are at home to help with harvest you really can't ask them to pay board.
I noticed in your post that you live in Nyabing. I visit Nyabing to support the school from time to time. I always think that the town has a good feeling about it.

My dh is the same...he barely empties the dishwasher then proceeds to tell me he cleaned the kitchen urrrm no you didn't you just emptied the damn dishwasher!!!
Oh and dashing den......that's so my job too lol but I do do the rest of the cleaning and gen tidying up at the same time and she helps me out if necessary on top of the jobs she is there to do every week
:)
-
I'm enjoying reading the flylady website - thanks goldfish
-
My Dh is like most really. But I never say anything as I remember when Dad died Mum made the remark that she wished she had someone to pick up after again. I found it kind of sad, so when I wipe the grease up from the floor for the 10th time in the day I try to remember that remark. It would be different if I had a housefull though.
-
Dashingden I didn't realise you were a West Aussie and work for the dreaded Ed Dept. I may have run into you some time when I was working.
-
You're welcome, keiramax :) Her "15 minutes" is great . . whether it serves to get something done or, I've found, just to build up the steam and momentum to tackle a huge something that seems daunting and offputting! And it really is surprising just what can be accomplished in 15 minutes!
-
I am having a little giggle as I read this thread. With DS7 who has ADHD and is like a cyclone, the house is always messy with toys etc. My DH tries to help but most nights doesn't get in the door til nearly 8pm after feeding the animals. When he does help, I find I have to do it again as his idea of clean and tidy is different than mine.
After reading keiramax roster I realise that I need a rosterone too. I work 9-5 Monday and Friday and still have to pick DS up from grandparents and travel 30 mins home. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday I work in our shop and only work 9-3 then pick DS up from school and generally home by about 4pm. If I did 30 minutes cleaning on those days I wouldn't have to spend all my weekend catching up.
-
DG something I learnt years ago and it is a sanity saver living in a house with 5 males (I will have to teach DD this as she gets older too!)
Men will NEVER do the job the same as us or to our satisfaction ... I have however learnt over the years to be grateful of the job that they do because it is still better that what it was before they did it :D - then when I do get around to doing that chore the next time it really is only half the chore that I have to do ;)
As for ADHD boys etc, know exactly where you are coming from there but by the same token it is your home and kids should be allowed to play - don't stress the small stuff. If he is happy playing chances are he isn't annoying you lol :D
p.s. now is also the time to take some pressure off yourself as you have much on your plate :-* :-*
-
faffa so true hun. As long as DS cleans up before dinner thats OK.
As for DH I must say at least he tries. I would be very cranky if he didn't. He is working the shop by himself atm so I can stay home with DS during school holidays.
-
I may not put things away exactly as DW would but with 8 years in the Marines I am pretty good at cleaning. I also am much better at ironing, I am slow but thorough.
I am a firm believer that most young people would benefit from a stint in the military. It instills discipline and usually leads to greater independence and maturity.
-
Dashingden I didn't realise you were a West Aussie and work for the dreaded Ed Dept. I may have run into you some time when I was working.
Cookie I have worked for the department for about 14 years. I have always worked in the country, mostly in the Pilbara and the Southwest. I am currently based at the Narrogin Local Education Office. This last year with the department and the restructure has left me thinking about a change in career.
-
Goldfish - I really like your suggestion of the Flylady and have signed up. I have found myself creating a lot more mess as I have been using my TMX a lot more now but I hope to start with the shiny sink as of next week.
I am not a routine person like judy but I found it helped when I did do a bit before christmas and then my inlaws arrived from adelaide for christmas and my daughters christening and that went out the window. So I'd like to try and establish one again and i think the flylady will help me do it.
I like the other suggestions too though.
-
Hope it works for you tasty...im not a routine person at all either actually i hae routine after growing up with mr routine (my dad..blame that on the army..,drove e bonkers)..anyway i tried flylady but didnt work for me... Think its the thousand emails you get a day and the reminders of doing this or that but it works for so any so good luck...i really need to take charge in my own way ad any form of routine or being told to do something even if a suggestion i tend to screach to a halt lol
Saying that i can be very organised but on my own program and in my own way...the slightest hiccup tjough and it all goes to pfft lol
-
I'm another big flylady fan too. Have been following her for years. I've got TWO ds's with ADHD, and a 3 yr old, so things can get pretty messy but I think that now the oldest is 10 the might be getting less so. DH has changed his work hours and now gets up around 6am. Its wonderful to get up with him and do a few jobs before the children wake up. This morning I made bread for the lunches (how would you do THAT without a TMX - start to on the table in an hour, cool enough to cut for them to take to school in sandwiches at 8.20)
I don't work outside the home so it IS easier for me but I find it best just to really keep on top of it. And if anyone wants to lend a hand, I'm perfectly happy to accept their standards :)
It really does help to have the right tools. I've got this diddy little stick vacuum that is rechargeable so as soon as there are crumbs on the floor you can grab it and vacuum them right up. Its even easier to use than one of those hand held dustbuster things.

I'm naturally a 'messie' and long to be a 'cleanie'. I did set up a schedule after my first child was born, complete with daily, weekly, quarterly, annual jobs all written on a card system. Within weeks, I realised that (1) I was actually doing more than most 'cleanies' did in their routines, and (2) I was bored to tears doing it. I now try to tidy as much as I can without going bonkers, give all of us a few daily jobs, and get a cleaner in once a fortnight to do the main cleaning.
I still stress about the mess, the never-ending lego that finds it way into every nook and cranny (obviously to breed with the NERF missiles!), etc, etc. But as a good friend tells me: 'One day it won't be there because the kids have moved on, and we'll miss it.'
-
yes ,................i think DH has a list ;D he is a smart cookie my frank ;)
-
Since starting my cleaning roster, the thing I notice most about my house if the mounds of stuff everywhere.
So my goal for Jan is to declutter the kitchen. Cleaned out the pantry on the weekend or as my friends call it the food room. While in there have measured up for the shelves which will finish off the pantry.
I have a box of things to donate to family and/or friends or the op shop.
Now I just need to find room for the 400+ vacola jars I've collected from grandparents and friend's grandparents. They seem to be breeding in the shed.
-
:D It still stuns me the amount of "things" that just seem to accumulate around the house that seem to escape notice at times! I know what you mean about those jars . . they do tend to breed . . and in geometric progression!!! LOL . . . Good luck!! Sounds like you're off to a flying start!!
-
Every year at least once a year I clean out every cupboard/room in the house. As I go through the cupboards I box/bag up anything that I haven't used iin the last year. This ensures that I minimise the "junk" I have laying around. I am a huge believer in "everything has its place" but by no means am a clean freak. I just find that by minimising the stuff it's a lot easier to keep clean, especially when you tidy up and put everything back where it should be. Mind you the last two times I have moved it all to a storage room that we have with a mind to sell at a garage sale. I was in there this morning (it's where my treadmill is) and made a decision that I'm not having the garage sale as I am sick of seeing it all. I'm going to sort it over the next few weekends and donate it to charity. I want it gone more than I want to organise a garage sale!
-
WE have amazing amounts of stuff stored around our house. DW is a hoarder. Not a true clincla horder but she saves anything with a smidgen of sentimental value and she does like to have supplies of some things. I think it comes form not having a lot when she was a child and having a mother that was not sentimental about anything and saved nothing.
I have a shed full our kids toys (the girls are 25 and 27 this year). DW say they are for the grandkids to play with when we finally get some.
-
DD, I'm a relief teacher at the school, so may have come across you when you visited! I don't remember any male visitors last year, though, so must not have been working when you came.
I live in town and am on the Local Council. We're really proud of our little town, it's very pretty and we are a close knit community. So it's good to hear that you think the town has a nice feel to it.
Back to the OT, I find it difficult keeping up with the inside cleaning when I'm also expected to do the outside as well. DH is harvesting for other farmers that are still struggling to finish and leaves at the crack of dawn every day, arriving home late at night. Then straight to bed as soon as he's eaten.
I'm ready to put goldfish in our ^%#*^ swimming pool. I just got it perfectly right and we had a huge storm on NYE. Dust, leaves, bark, branches all blown in. When I cleaned it I left the pump off by mistake and it went green! I've just about got it right again. The weather has been so foul we haven't even swum in it this year!
-
I do a big throw out now and then... and just now and then, live to regret it! We lived in a small place and I threw out the thermosaver (the heat resistant dish) before we put the place on the market. Now we live in a much bigger place, I wish I kept it. AAAArgh..... :'( :'( :'(
-
I must admit I love flylady - but not the emails. You can shut them off though or read them off the site. I have taken what I like from the flylady site and added it to my own routines. I didn't bother with her cleaning routines much as I like to do a complete clean once a week anyway (and washing windows etc when I can). I like the organising side of flylady though like loading the washing machine, getting our clothes ready and packing bags each night before going to bed. That has been a lifesaver with me going back to work.
My Hubby is amazing around the house and always willing to help out. He unloads the dishwasher each morning and makes us all breakfast. He then loads in the breakfast dishes and wipes the benchtops. This gives me time to have a shower, make all the beds and get the kids dressed. I don't know how I would manage without his help. I am in charge of doing the washing/folding (no ironing here) and cleaning the house on my days off work. Hubby does most of the work in the garden.
-
Yesterday, I spent quite a bit of time cleaning the kitchen benchtops and everything on them. I also cleaned my sink in order to do FLYlady's first babystep of shine your sink. I was so proud of myself ;D ;D
Today my husband agreed to make the hamburger patties for lunch in the TMX and struggled to put the jug and base together but got there in the end (he has used the TMX a few times but with a bit of nagging from me). I was breastfeeding our daughter. By the time the hamburgers were ready, I was done and went to do a self-clean only to have water pouring out everywhere. I could've cried! Hubby didn't realise he had to put the seal back in the lid and so hamburger patty-infused water flooding my newly clean benchtops!!
It seems as if my efforts to get the house clean and maintain it that way are in vain :-[
And Chelsea - I also think the constant emails are a bit much!! (from Flylady)
-
Hi Tasty - I had a dedicated email account for the flylady reminders - I would have gone nuts having them come to my regular account! I don't get them any more. There are still plenty of suggestions and good advice though and you end up just tweaking it all to suit you. Commiserations on the TMX cleanup though - been there, and done that!! :(
-
P.S - I must also admit that I don't shine my sink. I did the initial clean and got it looking lovely but maintaining it was sending my batty. One little splash and I had the towel out wiping it. Aggghhhhh! There are enough worries in life without being concerned about drip marks in sinks!!! :-)) :-)) :-))
-
I do shine my sink regularly! I use bi-carb soda and finish by wiping out with paper towel.
I have to do this every time I need to do the dishes from my Skinflint workshop. I also have to sterilise it. I love a clean shiny sink.
-
You can get a daily digest from flylady which is one email a day. She does say to delete the emails if you need to.
-
hi meganjane
l saw you advertisement for skinflint in the ripe mag, we get ever so often in our local paper
and l said to my husband hey l know that lady from the thermie forum
what a lovely photo of you and it was a good article too love the shop set up
your products look very well presented
-
I found this post interesting to see what others do. My house is not spotless but I do like it tidy which is really hard with 5 kids and all their friends who visit regularly, I have found it even harder with my framing business getting busier and busier.
But I do have a routine where I wash clothes daily, I always like all the beds made first thing in the morning and I try to have all the rooms tidy.
I vacuum and mop twice a week ( used to be every second day)
Groceries are done Thursday fortnightly
Bedding changed weekly (but I usually change 2 or 3 beds one day and the rest the next day to save having a massive pile of washing on one day)
Other jobs are done as needed and when I have the time.
That reminds me I need to give all the windows a clean inside and out (Oh I hate that job), I also need to shampoo the carpets, oh and clean the gutters, and do some weeding, and spray for spiders, and my car needs a clean, must clean the fish tank too, and mow the lawns.........and...........and.........and
A woman's work is never done.
-
I have to agree with you on that one Mandi ;)
-
I finally got around to shining my sink - the first babystep in FLYlady's programme and it looks really good! I'm trying to establish the morning routine too.
Taking things slowly so hopefully they become permanent. Inspired to declutter too.
-

Me too. I do it once per day and give it the odd swish if it's looking rough, otherwise I long since gave up on perfectionism with it. Life's too short :-)
I still roughly stick to fly lady but the number of emails drove me mad so I unsubscribed pretty quickly.
I started FLYing about 9 years ago, and although I slip off the wagon here and there over the years I always get back on board again. It's a life (or at least home) saver.
I started including DD2 in the morning cleaning routines this morning, I figured 'well she's 2 on Sunday, let's get her to work' ;-)
-
;D 2 is a good age ;D
-
Incidentally, speaking of routines, if anyone has an iPad or iPhone there are 2 quite useful apps which I (roughly and intermittently) use : home routines which is based around fly lady and has a 15 min timer built in (can do other times too, that's just the default ) I use that if I not in the flow, or need a quick reminder.
The other is much more detailed / perfectionist and I don't look at it unless I'm doing well as it would depress me. But when I'm doing well its great at really getting me on track with everything. That's the motivated moms calendar.

Oooh thanks Caroline I like the look of home routines

What is the secret to shining your sink girls? Haven't got time to go over to Flylady to find out. :-))
-
Here you go JD http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/shine-sink/
-
Thanks Meagan, I thought that once I got over to that site I might spend too much time there :D You probably saved me a lot of time ;) Will give it a go later today. :-*

No problem it is easy when you know what you are looking for ;)

I think as I was reading this topic this morning the flylady jumped out and bit me! It is so hot here but I buzzed around cleaning, vacuming, cleaned the fridge out, and cooked some bagels, and prepped some granola for toasting a bit later. Unbelievable, but I need I shower now to cool down and then I'm gonna sit back.
-
You have been busy CP.
-
Good old Flylady aye CP. Great effort on such a hot day. I did the sink and the splashback but that's all I'm doing for the day, it is supposed to be a holiday afterall ;) My sink looks amazing, must pass this tip onto others. Thanks again Meagan.

You are welcome JD happy to help - you do so much for the forum :-*
-
Haha I read the post on cleaning the sink this morning and decided that I would do mine today! Well, the kids came in when I was halfway through and stood staring at me... I must have looked like a woman possessed! Sweat dripping as it was damn hot today, using a bit of elbow grease. But I finished it and I must admit, having a clean sink does make you feel good. A b it like when I clean out the pantry ;)
-
It's taken all week, but I've finally cleaned the oven using only bi carb, vinegar, salt and lemon juice. It now matches my shiny sink. Next on the hit list, clean out kitchen cupboards.
-
Can you please share with us the combinations/amounts of those oven cleaning ingredients keiramax. I know someone who has just spent hours cleaning her oven and although it is a little late for her now, it would be a worthwhile exercise to write this method down for next time.
;) ;) :-* :-* to that person, she will know who I mean.
-
I have a very clean sink too now lol. This cleaning is catching on I do believe. Then I got into the girls room and gave that a good clean and moved their room around. Next to tackle the boys room (sigh....what a job )
-
:) I did have a cleaning lady, untill the middle of last year, even though I worked from home. (it was great)
Since September last year, I now work full time, in our shop, and I have to clean at home too.
I am so lucky my Husband helps me heaps. He sweeps, mops, tidies up what ever needs doing when I don't have time.
( our joke is the cleaning fairys been) which is him.
generally I stay home Saturdays and clean, do the grocery shop on Sundays.
I must check out flylady again.
Thanks, Robyn :)
-
I am loving the home routines app for iPad ;) thanks CarolineW :-*
-
No real recipe, I just put the bi carb into a flour shaker and sprinkled on the surfaces, and put the vinegar into a spray bottle and sprayed until the bi carb formed - then wiped off.
For the tough stuff I made a paste of table salt and lemon juice and used the lemon halves to scrub.
Plus lots of elbow grease.
-
Meagan, the link to the sink cleaning says to use baking powder, can you use bi-carb instead?
Thanks for the oven cleaner keiramax, mine is pretty clean as I never cook meat in it but I will write it out and keep it in a safe place.
-
Too hot to clean here. That is my excuse and I plan to stick to it. ;)
-
Any tips for cleaning the shower?
-

I obviously didn't read it right because I used bi-carb....but it worked great!!!!!
I have been getting a little inspired and organized thanks to flylady. Still not keeping it totally together, but its a step up from where I was at before!! ;D
-
I think I've got the cleaning bug too. I downloaded home routine and I'm going to try and stick to it! My sink is still clean, that's a miracle in itself ;)
-
Red Kell, I'm sure either bi-carb or baking soda works well.
Hools003, I can't believe how many times a day I wipe that darn sink to keep it dry and shiny. My sink has never had so much attention. :D :D
-
OMG girls, what have you done to me :D I have no DS this morning and I am cleaning and decluttering. Haven't done sink because I think I would be afraid to use it again, but the house is looking great.
I need to do some cooking today but now I don't want to make mess.
-
Haha JD I know what u mean! I keep walking into my kitchen just to look at my nice clean sink. How sad is that?
DG I have no kids this morning( they are at mum and dads) and apart from it being very peaceful and my house staying clean, I'm madly cleaning( oh and on the forum) ;)
-
hello
-
hello fundj :-*
-
Hi Fundj, your post is showing up now
-
I also found flylady great to get me started. I too got tired of the emails and usually delete them unless I need some inspiration. Now things like shining the sink, making the bed, washing, getting ready are just routine. The swish and swipe still isn't yet though, so that's what I"m working on next. I love the 15minute ideas and the hot spots.
-
.

Hools003, I can't believe how many times a day I wipe that darn sink to keep it dry and shiny. My sink has never had so much attention. :D :D
That is what sent me batty JD. It looked beautiful but in the end I didn't want to wash up in it and was forever wiping it. :)
-
I have a family of 7 so it's impossible to keep the sink clean all the time. I prefer to have it all cleared and dry of a night before I go to bed. Otherwise I would spent every few minutes cleaning it during the day and nothing else would ever get done lol. 😄
