We went to Bas Foods in Brunswick (Vic) on Saturday morning to pick up some supplies.
We got:
1kg Sesame Seeds
500g Sunflower Kernels
3kg Arborio Rice
750g Walnuts
500g Linseeds
2kg Chickpeas
12.5kg '00' flour
1kg Buckwheat
500g Quinoa Seeds
Unslalted Cashews
1kg Rye Flour
1kg Peanuts
750g Raw Almonds
1kg Red Lentils
500g Pumpkin Seeds
1kg Black Turtle Beans
5kg Wholemeal Flour
900g Frike
200g Himalayan Rock Salt
1kg Polenta Maize
1kg Polenta Fine.
This is an amazing amount of food for $140.
I've got such as desire now to make things from scratch.

The TMX does tend to have that effect on us - lots of cooking there Chris.
-
a very healthy looking list disgruntleddog ;D

Where is Bas foods, disgruntleddog? I'm only a couple of suburbs away and spending way too much money at Coles lately, think I should check it out. Is it on Sydney Rd?
-
Disgruntleddog, where is Bas Foods.? I usually go to Ray's Nuts in Hall St. Moonee Ponds. They have most things I need, however i see a couple of things on your list that they don't have. While in Melb., we also go to a great Chinese Supermarket in Racecourse Rd.
-
It's on Victoria Street, west of Sydney Road.
Fantastic place to shop. They are a major supplier to all of the Middle Eastern Restaurants along Sydney Road.
-
Hi, just an inquiry what is Frike, I've never heard of this...
-
It's green wheat. We've never used it before. Bought it on a whim.
-
Sounds interesting. Farfallina might be able to help with this,
-
This might help with frike - tells what it is and how it's processed

That's one heck of a shopping list disgruntleddog! I'm quite envious!
-
I've used freekah before and love it. It is especially nice in sooups and casseroles.
I love the shopping list Chris. I've never heard of black turtle beans though.
-
Cookie black turtle bean are a south american bean. They are a true black bean and are fairly small. The whole bean is black unlike the black beans used in an asian black bean suace which are essentially a soy bean with a black spot on them.
I have used them to make black bean brownies. No flour just the beans sugar cocoa etc. I have not tried making this with the thermomix. I will have to find the recipe and have a go converting it then I will post it.

I love the Black Turtle Beans.
I have a recipe somewhere for "Turtle Burgers" that I make from time to time.
I horrify my vegetarian friends when I tell them we are having them.
I will have to find it and convert it to use the TC.
It will certainly make it a lot quicker.
They are really yummy and even my DH who loves his steak is very happy to eat them.

I look forward to your conversion DD.I have a friend who's a coeliac and usually bake something special for her birthday.

Thanks Rosie,
Gotta do the Turtle Burgers for my vegie friends. Quite cruel. :D
-
I just can't believe how many kg of food you ended up with, and glad it wasn't me pushing the trolley :D
-
Great list, hope I can find the same sort of store in Perth!
-
ditto Mezza39 - I am in the claremont area in Perth so if anyone knows of a store like this around there....or even online in Perth I'd love to hear about it!
-
I get a lot of my 'dry food' from 2brothersonline. I think they are in the Claremont area, not certain. They are great, have heaps of stuff (not too sure about the turtle beans though) that you can buy by the kilo, or less. Their postage is truly amazing (just paid $3.50 for 12kgs to be sent to me, I also just paid $8.50 to send a springform tin to a friend here in Perth...wouldn't have made a kilo ???) Their turn around from order to receiving it has been great too - usually only 3 or 4 days. Hope that helps. :)
-
Do they only do online Nikkit? I'm SOR but would go out there and have a look.
-
Cookie - not sure to be honest! Have a look at their web site would be the best bet and see if they do have a "shop". Bit of a hike for me to get to Claremont, so much easier to shop online.
Means I can do it in the afternoon and have a quiet beer while I browse ;D and not have to worry about parking, shop assistants with attitude and wonky trolleys with DD "driving" ... right into the back of my heels! (her last effort saw me bleeding, seeing stars and trying really hard not to cry!)

That 2brothers online store used to be called angry almond (i.e. if you go to www.angryalmond.com online it redirects you to 2brothers). The store was on Princess Road in Nedlands, just near dalkeith road - I have been away for about 18 months but I used to shop there all the time. I just hadn't triggered that Angry Almond was now 2Brothers. As to whether the shop is still there - I will check in the next day or so and let you know :)
Just checked with my boyfriends mum and she says it is still there - I still plan to check it out myself though so I will double check.
-
Just confirming the retail shop in Nedlands (on Princess Road, near Dalkeith Road) is still there and open - and it is still called Angry Almond.
Cheers

There is also Kukulas Brothers on Williams Rd Northbridge. They have alot of flours pulses, nuts beans and rice in bulk. Plus many other interesting dried fruits and European foods. They do not have EFTPOS and only accept cash.
They have a website but do not sell over the internet. Their website lists many of the bulk products they stock.
Here is the link http://www.kakulasbros.com.au/home.html

Thank you all. I feel the need to go for a drive to Nedlands when the school holidays finish. Most of our friends still teach so holidays are busy catch up times.
