Very excited, sharing with a friend, so hoping to get it in the freezer.
Our guest is doing a great job of helping me clean out the freezer, not that much meat left now. Having some people over friday for a bbq so that will help too. Should be nearly out of meat by wednesday when I pick up our order. Loved my first whole lamb, the best way to buy meat for us as we have freezers.
Plus we dont have any/much left overs, yay :D
H :)
-
hally r u eating more meat now that u have plenty in the freezer ?
-
No not really Uni, maybe having more friends over for bbqs as meat is so much cheaper.
Still have a lot of chicken, had chicken tonight & vegetarian once per week.
Are you thinking of ordering?
H :)
-
frank would love it if i would order a whole beef
franks perfect meal would be a plate of pasta a pizza and a t bone
i must say that my last trip to bali has shrunk his stomach i left sooooooooo much food for him but he hardly touch it.
its taken me 30 years to reduce his meal sizes , but i think i have do it. now i need my DIL to work on my DD he only eats once a day but boy he eats soooo much that it makes me feel sick, he will have lasagna sandwiches OMG that makes me feel sick just typing that.
-
Uni, your ds, that is so unhealthy, really really bad. Must eat 4 times a day & small amounts, big bkreakast & smaller each meal. I dont follow that but i do eat 4-5 times per day & I dont eat big meals unless its holidays ;D
Get dh on small eals too.
H :)
-
you are 100% right hally. its upto his wife now :(
-
Yes get her on to it, its heart attack stuff, seriously >:(
H :)
-
you are not wrong hally a dear freind that is also chef ended up in hospital few year ago, way 2 many coffees and cigs
-
That is really sad :(
Yes another ny resolution for you, make family eat well, small meals often.
Hugs
H :)
-
its upto my DIL to look after him now its out of my hands
-
Be an intervering mil, its for everyones sake :)
H :)
-
My BIL who is only 63 has had several heart attacks,(with a quadruple bypass), several toes removed from his feet, (in hosptal at the moment for number 5/6/7?) by pass surgery to the veins in both his legs, a stroke and type 2 diabetes. He was a smoker for many, many years and a heavy drinker.
Our health is so important. I just wish we realised it at 20. :D
-
:) Hally, don't you love it when you buy in bulk, and its so much cheaper, and nicer meat.
I am thinking of buying another freezer, i have 3, but all chest freezers.
Robyn
-
Yes Robyn, I love it, the meat is great and you know if your invted to a BBQ you always have something good in the freezer. We tend to have more people over as I always say do t bring anything so the cost is much less these days.
I love having my freezers full of meat ready to go. Just wish I could get chicken in bulk.
I would love another freezer too.
H :)
-
I love lasagna sandwiches???? Cold pizza for brekkie.
Kebabs for brunch.
-
When I can, we buy chicken in bulk. when steggles gets a breakdown, I can buy bulk.
Robyn
-
Soooo excited,
Upright chest freezer now empty, being defrosted and will be ready to fill with vacum sealed food. Cleared up around freeze & found capacity 163 whatever that means, i think thats enough room.
Hope I can use the vacum sealer ok, a bit slow at gadgets......
Wednesday afternoon is pick up.
Yay
I still have some lamb left. I have a pack n the freezer that contains neck & so other weirdieces, any deas what i could do, i am thinking stock?
H :)
-
I usually cook up all the scrag pieces when I am cooking the leg Hally. They I let DH just sit and pull bits off it for a snack or do it myself and make a 'free' shepherds pie or something with it. There is plenty of meat in there amongst the fat and if you don't mind spending some time getting it out and getting messy, it is worth the effort.
-
Lamb neck makes a lovely Irish Stew.

There's a recipe in the MOTM ;)
-
Ooohhh i have motm
Thanks
H
Xx
-
I hope it's nice. It needs long, slow cooking.
-
Still in freezer, I think it will stay there a while, the word neck puts me off
My friend can have all the weird pieces tomorrow as a bonus, as I still have the last lot to get through.
H :)

I do the same!!!! - flaps and scraps as my dear mum called them :D :D :D she taught me well :)
I think it makes the BEST shepherds pie - I don't generally make it otherwise as I don't like it :-))
-
Waste not, want not aye Kathryn ;) I have often though, whilst doing these messy jobs, who else would be bothered doing this - now I know the answer to that, you :D

Butchers rang, machine broken, picking up tomorrow >:(
H :)
We still have heaps of meat to eat, so not going to starve :)
-
Another day for recipe hunting Hally!
-
Oh gosh dont Faffa, i think I need a heard to make all my recipes :D
H :)
-
Lamb neck makes a lovely Irish Stew.
Yes, also good in any other slow-cooked dish. Morrocan couscous style dishes are great to use up neck chops. In summer I cook lamb neck in a spicy broth before adding carrots, capsicum, courgettes, chickpeas, tomatoes... the lot piled on couscous! YUM!
-
That sounds good, tonight we are having morrocan beef skewers on couscous with a lemon yogurt sauce.
H :)
-
Oh gosh dont Faffa, i think I need a heard to make all my recipes :D
H :)
LMAO I need a cow to feed my heard ;D ;D
-
My oh my, i have never seen such a huge amount of meat before, unless still on all legs walking. The lamb looks minimal compated to the cow.
I had to keep my friends half cold too, before she picked it up. I had it everywhere, eskys, 3 fridges and even some in the freezer.
Then it had to be sorted, she came in 1/2 way through and burst into laughter when she couldnt see me for meat,LOL
We are out to dinner tonight in one of my fav restaurants, feel guilty as i have so much meat.
The whole lot came to $1027, so really goid value. We have a large standing rib roast down to mince. The butcher gave us 2 bags of lamb bones, no idea what they are but froze them anyway.
Very very excited, they weighed and labelled each pack for us.
H :)
-
How big was the steer...how many kg did you get?
-
1 side was approx 105kg
H :)
-
sounds good Hally! Once I get my new freezer I might get the details from you as I miss buying me meat like that :)
-
Be interested in how long this lasts Hally - the way you go through meat though, I guess it won't be long and you will be placing another order.
-
Will let you know, the lamb weight was 22kg, so have over 60kg meat in the freezer, plus i bought some chicken & pork.
The butchers will sell me mt barker skinless chicken breats for $13per kg, cant get it any cheaper unless i buy hundreds of kgs.
Of out to Cocos tonight :)
H
:)
Fancy vegetarain.LOL
-
Of out to Cocos tonight :)
H
:)
Fancy vegetarain.LOL
:D
We put half of one of our steers (brother-in-law bought the other half) in the freezer at the end of October and I'm struggling to put my boxes of tomato sauce in, now that our tomatoes are in full production. But we should be right after a few BBQ's ;D Perfect season to have a few friends over.
I'll stick to the one freezer though or I don't think I'd be able to "manage" our meat intake. We'll wait a bit before we slaughter a few lambs as I don't like keeping meat frozen for more than a year.
-
What size is your freezer, mine is over 1/2 full, so unless I had my fridge freezer empty I woukdnt be able to fit a whole side, thats a lot of meat.
How long will it last you.
H :)
I did eat vegetarian last night, saw too much meat yesterday, wasnt interested.
-
I think our freezer is 360l and 3/4 full of steer. Our beast was about 250 to 300kg dressed. The only thing I could weigh accurately as we were packing the meat was our share of mince: 30kg.
This will probably last us the year, but this is not the only meat on the menu ;)
Very nice to have plenty of meal options in the freezer, isn't it?
-
Hi Carine, my chest freezer is 163l, was surprised how much I could fit in. Have plastic bags labelled, i.e. mince, roasts, diced steak etc. yes its great, i know if we get asked to a bbq last minute we have meat, without going to a dodgy 24hr shop.
My butcher said meat guaranteed 6 monts but shoud last longer. i think it will be gone in 6 monts :)
H :)
-
Hally did i read that right ," if we get asked to a bbq last minute we have meat"
-
Hally, we have am upright freezer so I can't fill it to the brim :-\. Also mean I can find the cuts of meat I'm looking for easily! A freezer contents list is helpful whichever type of freezer you have!
Going through the lot in 6 months will mean lots of BBQs :)
-
My storage boxes dont fit in the freezer, so now have them in plastic bags labelled, diced steak, roasts, steak, beef stirfry etc.
Still eating the meat we already had in the freezer.
Taking alot of meat to Kalbarri for bbqs
H :)
Uni, yes you read it right. In the past on a sunday we have had to rush out andbuy some meat, now I have heaps. We also have last minute bbqs here, decide in the morning, easy now just defrost the meat.
-
hally do you bring ur own meat when you r invited to someones home for a bbq ?
-
Yes if its a large gathering, most friends say bring meat. If its just our faimly no, but i always take something in case ds doesnt like the marinade etc, too spicy etc. Last minute ones yes always take meat.
We always provide meat at our house, sometimes friends bring sausages for the kids.
What happens over east?
H :)
-
i could not imagine asking family or friends to bring anything if i have invited them for a bbq or dinner. is this an aussie thing ?
i have many aussie friends and have been over for BBQs and have never been asks us to bring anything, maybe next time i will ask :-))
-
Must be an aussie thing or maybe just in perth.
Whenever we are invited, oe of myfirst questions is what woud you like me to bring.
Friends ask me, i normally say a salad if we are having a bbq, if not I say just drinks :)
H :)
-
most of my aussie friends will bring me flowers and vino ;D flowers for frank and the vino for me ;D
frank does not drink at all not even a sip :-))
-
frank does not drink at all not even a sip :-))
He's definitly a keeper then Uni ;) :D :D :D

Jan you changed your avatar, what's his/her name :) A friend has a Pug called Doug ;D
-
The pug in my avatar is called Marley. I just love pugs. Although not so happy with Marley today as he decided it was time for breakfast at 5.15 this morning. >:(
-
Faffa, where do you normally go to buy in bulk. i wonder if the mt barker chicken breasts are cheaper there.
H :)
-
Jan you changed your avatar, what's his/her name :) A friend has a Pug called Doug ;D
His name is Yoda. He is a Griffon. Griffons look a bit like a pug but have a finer body and features and longer legs.

He's very handsome Jan and has a very adorable name. :)

Re Beef. we sell our beef $6.50 kg cut up how you would like it, and packed (not vacuum sealed) delivered to your door between Mt Barker and Victor Harbor. Not certified organic, but not fed chemical sprayed hay or byproducts.
-
Wow thats a great price.
Do you sell mt barker free ranger chicken?
I have no idea where victor harbour is, is it in WA?
H :)
-
No, we are talking South Australia here Hally. We both have a Mt Barker and Victor Harbour is down south in the area near where that time-share place was that we spoke about a while back.
-
Thanks JD, thought & hoped WA ;D
Well I bought a book in Hawaii, The Cook & The Butcher, its fantastic for my cow & lamb, so many wonderful recipes for the bbq & oven. I am really looking forward to getting stuck into this book. I am taking it to kalbarri, so will ave to menu plan to make sure I take the right cuts if meat.
There is a lovely leg of lamb grilled on the bbq with a sour cream, lime & chive sauce :P
H
-
Sorry Hally its in SA. Didn't know there would be same towns, in another state. When I saw you mention Mt Barker, I assumed it was in SA. Hope you find your free range chooks at a good price. I always find it interesting that free range costs more, as really it doesn't cost more to keep free range chooks. Do you live in the country, as you could raise your own meat birds. We used to do this with our neighbour before her husband died.
-
No i live about 8kms from the city, chickens not allowed in our suburb.
H :)
-
Well I still have some beef in the freezer.
1 leg of lamb & 1 pkt of lamb mince
So I have ordered a whole lamb, 10kgs of chicken breast (Mt Barker skinless) & 4 chickens.
Pick up tomorrow.
Our butcher is great, he just rang to confrm how I wanted the lamb.
Happy Hally :)
-
We buy beef for $5.99 kilo.
cut up, packed, labelled.
So much easier in bulk.
Robyn :)
-
Yes I am just lovng this way of buying meat.
Still have a fair bit of beef, so lamb & chicken are good for now.
H :)
-
What do people pay for a full lamb? Just for interest sake.
-
Are you from Perth Hally? We are in North Perth so very interested in which butcher you go to to buy in bulk? Is it cheaper than buying from the supermarkets?
Thanks
-
Dede, Last time I bought the lamb it was $9.90 per kg. will let you know later what I paid today.
MEP, yes I live South of The River. Yes not only is it a lot cheaper, but the quality is far superior. The butchers I buy from are a wholesaler to restaurants here in Perth & have a small retail side too.
You can pm me if you want more details.
H :)
-
I get mine for free from DH, and as I never buy any lamb I don't take any notice of the price in the supermarkets, butchers etc.
I'm assuming a decent size leg of lamb would be $30 - $40 each then.
-
I know those lovely french trimmed cuts at the local shops here are $3 each!!!
H :)
-
$ 3 each :o
-
Yes thats Perth for you.
>:(
-
not sure of the price in sdy hally, i dont buy lamb.
-
Wow, actually my friend buys lamb cutlets for her and her DS, I think a pack of 4 is $8. That's a lot of money for a mouth full. At least buying in bulk the cost is much better.
We buy a full pig for $120, lamb is around $120 (if we brought it) and a cow around $600-$800 depending on size. Our freezer is looking pretty sad at the moment. We need some beef and pork in there to go with our lamb.
-
Hi Hally, I"m new to this so how do I PM you? Not sure what you mean or how I would do it. Can anyone help? Thanks
-
MEP click on hallys name, it will bring you to her porfile page scorll down and click on send Send this member a personal message.
-
Dede, todays price was $9.50 per kg.
H :)
-
Thanks funds.
-
MEP, have sent you a pm
H :)
-
Dede, todays price was $9.50 per kg.
H :)
Well that's a bit better than last time. With all that meat you will be set for a long time.
So what's for dinner tonight?
-
Our neighbour supplies us with half a lamb and half a pig each time he does a kill. It definately saves alot of money. Most of it is chops and legs etc for roasts.
-
Dede chicken pie from Jamie Olivers Dinners Book, I have borrowed it from a friend so thought I should try a few before returning.
DG, what lovely neighbours you have, thats a huge saving :D
H :)
-
Can't complain about that DG.
DH has just brought a big fridge that will hold 4 lambs hanging. Will make it much easier for all year round now. Would love a big cool room.
-
Dede, your fosm, do you just sprinkle it on the chops before bbq.
H :)
-
Yes Hally, I only do it to BBQ chops ( forequarter), I have never been keen on BBQ chops so this is the only way I cook them. Yum yum.
-
Just added to my order, pick up thursday, excitement
1 side of a cow, to share
2 whole lambs, 1 each
10kgs of free range chicken breast, can share if my friend wishes
1 side of porkers the pig, can share if my friend wishes
Some whole chickens, depending on space
;D ;D ;D
Defrosting old freezer, ready for next week :)
-
Happy Hally....
-
You could throw a pretty good BBQ Hally with all that meat ;) Have fun sorting it all out.
-
Yes a huge BBQ!!!
I am so excited.
;D
-
Hally, how long do you think that will all last and do you end up with any bits that you aren't fond of eating? There's a few cuts I would never buy (eg shanks) so am always put off buying in bulk in case I end up with pieces I won't use up.
-
i would say about 8 months for us. We all love lamb shanks & you only get 2 in a whole lamb.
No we havent come across anything we dont like or use.
It is such a cheap way to buy meat
:)
-
Do they pack them for you Hally, or do you bag it all up yourself?
Because our butcher comes to us...we have to do all our own bagging....can take hours :-)) but I stupidly didn't remember to buy enough zip lock bags last time, and had to use freezer bags....big mistake!!
The normal freezer bags stick to each other in the chest freezer, and are impossible to pry apart....you would think I would have remembered to be more organised by now :-\
-
Maddy, the guys are really good, it all comes in trays, weight & cut on label.
Keep looking in freezer & thinking we must eat this & this etc
:)
-
Hally, you would have liked what DD2 gave DH for his birthday today - 2 x 1.5 kg cryovac packs of fillet steak ;D
-
Yummy Judy, what a great idea...
-
It always goes down well Robyn, what do you buy someone who doesn't really need anything?
-
What a great idea for a present. You will enjoy those :)
-
Hally, you would have liked what DD2 gave DH for his birthday today - 2 x 1.5 kg cryovac packs of fillet steak ;D
Wow what a great idea, good thinking by your DD Judy. :)
-
Excellent birthday gift idea.
I have an Aunt & Uncle that have everything and live in a retirement village. They would love fillet steak for the freezer.
-
frank and i love the idea of the retirement village living, when time tme comes ;D
-
Uni, the retirement village is whizz bang.
They have a modern 2 bedroom unit. Private bus to the shopping centres every day and bus trips once a week
to different locations.
Their own what's going on TV channel. Recreation room that's always got something happening and a mens shed.
It's where I'm going.
-
Just think about it girls, we could start our own retirement village - what a great place that would be to live if we all got together. ;D
Uni and Gert could lead us astray - I'm sure we would all be followers ;)
-
Lovely idea.
Margarita's and limoncello by the pool.
-
I think michele has a great idea
:)
-
I'll cook the cakes Judy...
-
i will keep us in supply, of pasta , pizza ,sumbuca and limoncello ;D
-
Looking forward to my golden years and retirement now. ;D ;D ;D
Pizza, cakes, limoncello.
-
A few people asked me how long my meat order would last. Well as you know when I picked up my new batch at the beg of July my freezers were nearly empty. Today I decided to go through my freezer & see what meats & cuts I have. Most of the et is in 1kg packs.

-
Yes its great, I initially thought until the end of the year but I think it will last longer. Will probably buy another lamb when its all gone as we all love lamb :)
Very happy H

-
That's great Hally - seems to really work for you.
-
Hally, once you buy like this, you always do. I love buying my meat, fish, ect in bulk too. :)
-
Yes works really well.
Obbie, I dont think I couod buy meat any other way now, just look at the choices for dinner ;D
H :)
-
Yes Hally, the choices are endless, but look at the savings too, so you can take that holiday... :)
-
I am on wednesday evening, flying to Singapore :)
The savings are amazing & I love the choices for menu planning :)
H :)
-
This is the contents of my freezers now, thinking of ordering another lamb & pig before xmas, or holding out until Jan & ordering everything. As you can see still a lot of meat left. Chicken very low :( love chicken.

Hally that's still a lot of meat isn't it?
In case you were looking for a recipe for the lamb riblets we had this one from the masterchef website on the weekend and all loved it. We had it with lemon potatoes and a salad of spinach, almonds, pumpkin, beans and feta and it was one of the best meals I've eaten in a long time. We had never had the lamb ribs before but I got them very cheap so thought we would give them a try.
http://www.masterchef.com.au/recipes/greek-ribs.htm (http://www.masterchef.com.au/recipes/greek-ribs.htm)
-
Thanks for the link Wonder. :)
I have lamb ribs in the freezer and have never cooked them before.
This sounds delicious and will definately use this recipe when I cook them. Your side dishes sound lovely too
-
you still have plenty left H, i would wait until Jan b4 ordering you next lot
-
Wonder & Uni yes your right I still have lots of meat, should just make use of what I have. Just love pork & chicken.
Wonder, thanks will try that one. Last batch of lamb ribs I made were sticky lamb ribs, they were yum too.
MF the ribs are good :)
H :)
-
Hally that is enough for 22 meals. ( 3 weeks)
7 weeks till Christmas, so I would order soon.
Says Robyn with 3 freezers full of meat, fish, chicken, lamb.. ;D ;D ;D
-
Seems a lot of meat Hally. I don't know how far ahead you have to place an order, maybe you could see how you're travelling in 2-3 weeks time?
-
Obbie thats way more than 22 meals, lol, i reckon its 2 months of meat. My main concern is lack of choice, just will have to be more inventive with my ideas.
Mich, i like to give the butcher 2 weeks notice as then he will book in the time to package & weigh it for me.
We are off to our time share for 1 week at christmas, it has no oven, bbqs & hot plate plus of course I take Thermie. Maybe I should menu oplan for that week & see what we need. Just worried we might not have enough bbq meat. Plus I need sausages for cps birthday party.
H :)
-
I'd get rid of a lot more before I ordered Hally. You still have plenty of variety there and if you need anything special like sausages, just buy what you need.
-
Just worried we might not have enough bbq meat, so i coukd just but 1 pig or 1 lamb.
H :)
-
Looking at doing another order soon :)
-
Its coming today. I have 2 lamb forequarter chops in my freezer & lots of chicken.
So 1 lamb & a side of beef, sharing beef with another friend.
Hoping to get pork in January when there is room in the freezers :)
-
Well done Hally. I found when I ordered a lamb we ended up with lots of chops that the kids don't eat. So I just try and buy on special or bulk of the cuts we do eat.
-
Last kamb I didnt get many chops as I wanted the backstrap :)
