Title: Thermomix and Soda Stream..?
Post by: Red Kell on November 08, 2011, 07:59:33 am
Hi, 8)
Does anyone out there have a Soda Stream? I've just been given one, but I don't want to use the syrup that goes with it, as it is high in all sorts of additives that I'm trying to cut out!
It says you can make using a fruit juice concentrate, any ideas on how to make my own with Thermie? ???

Aha! I've always wanted one since I was a little kid. But everytime I look at them I hate the horrid syrup and what's in it. I always thought if I got one I would just put our cordial in that I make - (berry, raspberry, mulberry) - there is a thread and I'll find it but the recipe is in the EDC.  Lucky girl! ;)

Here's the thread for the review (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=2507.0) of the EDC recipe. If you put 'cordial ' in the search section you'll find other citrus recipes too.  ;)

We have a Soda Stream and we love it.  I have the fizzy water plain and DH has Ginger Cordial in his.  Any cordial added to the glass would be fine as would fruit juice,  1/2 and 1/2.

We've been thinking about the Soda Stream, handy to know you can make the cordial in the TMX. The Raspberry one sound particularly tasty (I like Raspberrys, particularly Raspberry sorbet; and loved the Apple and Raspberry J2O's you could get in the UK t'was the drink I'd have if I ended up in the pub and didn't want wine)

I love the soda stream....and my pink replacement hasn't turned up yet  >:(
Anyway, I love a bubbly glass of ginger beer too!
Oh-der moment....didn't consider making my own syrups  :P  Here's (http://www.sodastream.com.au/auretail/category.asp?catalog_name=Sodastream&category_name=SYRUPS&Page=1) the range anyway.
Don't drink them too often, so using the syrups doesn't faze me.

Thanks so much for all the links guys, you lot are great ;D
I think I'll try raspberry first...yummm!
Maddie, I think if you only drink a little the syrup would be OK, but I am trying to limit additives in my sons food. With daily temps here in the 30's and getting hotter VERY quick, fizzy drink really does hit the spot! The more natural I can make it the better.

Just made a strawberry cordial (using the EDC recipe) to try with my soda stream. It's cooling as we speak. I admit, I pretty much halved the sugar, my jaw was dropping as I was measuring it, it seemed like SO much, and I was aiming for less sugar than the bought syrups. Hope it still works!

Laura I make the raspberry cordial from the EDC and use slightly less than half the amount of sugar. It is still sweet.

We have had a soda stream since Christmas and I just drink the soda water but my girls add fruit juice to it, we don't buy the soda juices for same reason...chemicals yuk!! Hadn't thought of making my own cordials, something else to try in Thermie!!!

My strawberry cordial worked well even with half the sugar, and like you cookie, I still find it sweet. I often drink the plain mineral water but sometimes like to fancy it up a bit or make a cocktail. The syrups aren't TERRIBLE since they market them as a healthier option to regular soft drinks (no high fructose corn syrup, no aspertame) but I feel better making it myself and knowing exactly what went into it.

Now, if only I could figure out how to make tonic for a G&T!

Heston used his soda stream in one of his shows to make a fizzy wine. He used Blue Nun,a white sweet wine, to see if he could get the same effect as champagne. A lot of his taste testers prefered the Blue Nun to the champagne.

Isn't that interesting! Do you remember if they carbonated the wine directly? My instructions are really clear about not carbonating anything other than plain water but I'm curious.

That's hilarious!! Found a few videos with people exploding their soda streams and trashing their kitchens so I think I'll stick to water  :o

I tried to carbonate some flat wine but it exploded out of the bottle lol, so I either filled the bottle too full or need a different method!
