In eager anticipation of the arrival of my TMX I wanted to tap into the vast knowledge out there.
My question is can you make a decent latte & cappuccino in the TMX or will I still need to purchase a coffee maker?
Any thoughts & recipes?
Thanks
Shan :)
-
For a good cup of coffee, the coffee has to be ground with a burr.( I think that what it is called) and I think that the burr produces an even sized grain. The TMX does not do this. It all depends how fussy you are with your coffee.
-
Shan I guess it depends on how much of a coffee connoisseur (can't spell it) you are. The TMX makes pretty good coffee. But having said that I also have a coffee machine. (I had it before the TMX)
-
I like a cappuccino made in the TMX - don't have them very often but they will do me any day. DD has a coffee machine and I never make myself a coffee with that when I am down there babysitting. It does depend on how particular you are I guess.
-
sorry but no way can the TM make a decent coffee!!! but then i am a coffee snob!
-
Hi baf, lovely to hear from you again.
-
Well I do love a good coffe - so the cofee maker maybe back on the Christmas list!!
Thanks everyone for the feedback
Shan

One of our local consultants sold a machine to the owners of this (http://fivesenses.com.au) business and they were suitably impressed with the coffee that the TMX made ...
that being said, I have a coffee machine because every time I want a coffee the darn TMX is in use :o :o :o :o
-
I have a Nespresso machine which I love. You can buy a Nespresso thingy that warms and foams the milk but I am sure Thermomix can do that more than adequately. But it certainly cannot brew quality coffee! But Thermie needs a st from time to time.

I tried the TMX coffee experiment - not a success, not even remotely. I am a coffee fanatic and am always looking for the "perfect" cup and the single-serve is my choice. I have a Senseo for regular coffee and a "Pod-Maker" so I can roast and grind (good burr grinder very necessary) my own beans to the degree of roast I want and fill my own pods.
I've also got a mini espresso machine given to me by friends to whom I gave my big superautomatic espresso a while back. This little Nescafe Dolce Gusto is cute and does an excellent espresso, cafe lungo, cafe latte and cappuccino.
My problem is that I simply can't stand "stale" coffee and if it stands for fifteen or twenty minutes to me it has a cardboardy taste that to me feels like scratching fingernails on a blackboard.
I have a collection of coffee makers and I have tried every kind, from the cheapest to the most expensive. Vacuum brewed coffee was my best choice prior to the Senseo but I could only brew it in small amounts or would have to toss most of it.
-
I don't like TM coffee either (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-sick001.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)
I love my Mokodor coffee pod machine, have at least 2 lattes a day.
I bought it off TVSN years ago, before the nepresso's were huge.
I did own 2 manual machines before this one, and I was dissappointed by both, for the temperature, the mess, and time it took to make consecutive coffees. That's why I like these pod/capsule systems. Quick, less mess, and once you find the flavour you like, it tastes great.
My steaming wand did have issues, so now I just heat the milk in the Baccarrat milk frother in microwave, and the temperature is perfect, makes it as frothy as you want it, and it's much easier to clean. I bought a couple (allow for dropping mishaps ;)) when on sale for $15.00
(http://www.baccarat.com.au/www/664/files/1006843_baccarat_milk_frother.jpg)
When this machine dies, I think I will replace it with a smaller Nespresso machine. The black capsule (no. 10), is the equivalent to the arabica pods I buy now.
-
DH and DD gave me a Nespresso and heaps of capsules for my birthday. I really love it and have a couple a day. I was going to stick to one but that was too hard.
-
Thanks for all the great feed back as usual.
Have heard that the Nespresso makes a good coffe so may have to look into it.

i have just purchased a Nespresso - my Christmas present from DH. Got a great deal usually $499.00 I got it for $389.00
Yay for me.

shanmac... can I as which machine you bought... their seems to me there are so many different varieties... ???
-
Nothing beats a nice international roast cup of coffee in the morning (the powder one)
most of my friends think i am crazy,i have a 2 group professional coffee machine that i could use but i still love my instant cup of coffee
go ahead and call me crazy, you are all my friends now ;D
-
:) I've got a coffee machine here for work, but I don't use it much, as its too hard to clean.
Its a breville.
Robyn :)
-
You sure can Mary Brown it's a Delonghi Citiz & Milk Nespresso Coffee Machine.
Very excited!
-
How exciting shanmac.... I have decided to put my Sunbeam coffee maker on ebay.... so I can then purchase a Nespresso.... not sure what type yet... I see Aldi have one on sale this week..... verrrry tempting... :) :)
-
I love my Saeco Royal Cappucino... in fact, my children know better than to ask me anything before I've had my morning latte! Mind you, we now have two... I couldn't stand the thought of mine going in for a service for 14 days and having to have instant... :o
Fundj, it takes all types though! ;)
I'm such a coffee snob I won't even try TMX coffee... :P
Oops! :D
-
i like a good ristretto
-
You're not crazy Uni, I prefer instant coffee too although I alternative between International Roast and Nescafe. Then again, maybe we are both crazy ;D
-
Uni...you 'are' crazy, international roast. takes all types!
-

I have to agree. :-\
When I have instant which is a few times a day I use Moccona. We just prefer the taste.
Shanmac get some of the Christmas release nespresso capsules. They are lovely. You can see them here. (http://www.nespresso.com/variations/AU_en?icid=AUen_nespresso_Nov11_Int_Variations11_homepage)
-
Shanmac, thank you for asking this question. I am a very fussy coffee drinker. I have a Breville Icon which I got with my Visa Rewards Points and it makes a great Mocha. Though I often wonder if i should use the TMX when I have a few friends over as it takes awhile to make one at a time.

I reckon using instant coffee for the latte in the EDC actually comes out pretty good.....for instant coffee that is.
-
I use Nescafe Espresso instant coffee when making a cappuccino in the TMX.
-
Thanx AmandaN, Perhaps I should give it a go on the weekend.

I nearly always use my TMX for coffee when we have guests. It takes far too long otherwise. As long as it has froth most visitors enjoy it. None of them are coffee connoisseurs.
-
Speaking of coffee machines, I will be interested to know if anyone purchases the Aldi "Expressi" machine (available 26th Nov), and their coffee capsules.
Obviously it's a copy of the nespresso.
Big price difference.....very curious.

I'm seriously thinking about it Maddy.... not sure which packet of the pods to buy but at that price I think I can afford a few of them.. :D
-
You could wear a few of these out for a Nespresso machine. The only catch I can see is that you wouldn't be able to put larger cups up to catch the coffee. I noticed because a Friend has this trouble with her Nespresso. Mine is fine thank goodness.
-
Yes thats true Cookie... I will check it out on Saturday...thanks :)

Good point cookie....I use taller glass cups for our lattes......maybe take your cup into Aldi to check the size :P

will look forward to your review Mary :)
-
my mug is 10cm high
i got the milk frother 2
-
:) :) :) Yes I got mine today also....a silver one with the frother :) :) :) I am very happy with it...they had a demonstrator at our local Aldi store and I tasted 3 different types of the coffee...which were all very nice. I came home with 2 packets of the pods... :) :) and you can take the cup stand away which allows you to use a taller size mug or cup... :) :) :) So I am one happy coffee machine owner... :) :)
-
They sound great.
-
The frother is amazing
-
Oh I wish we had ALDI here. There has been talk about for some time.
-
lyou can take the cup stand away which allows you to use a taller size mug or cup... :) :) :) So I am one happy coffee machine owner... :) :)
Oh that's good to know. Sounds like a good buy then!
From what I read from that catalogue, it sounds is if it's going to be a permanent product at Aldi.
Would make a good Christmas present for someone who doesn't have a machine.
-
I think the pods will be a permanent product and the machine will be a special buy yet will appear regularly, but that really only based on summation. ;)
I think I might just have to go to Aldi today, I totally forgot about it yesterday. 8)
Would have loved to do the tasting before I chose the pods.
-
Foodieprep... I got 2 packets of Tauro which rates as a 5 on the strength scale...and we are happy with the taste although I am going to buy a few packets of 6 and perhaps 7 strength just to have on hand. :) I made DH a cup this morning for our breakfast and he said that they were as good as the ones from our local cafe... which are $4 each... so we are very happy with our purchase. I am going back tomorrow to hopefully purchase one for my Mum and Dad for their Xmas present. They live in SA and they don't have Aldi over there.... so I will buy some packets of pods for them and send over a regular supply for them... ;D ;D Not sure why there is no Aldi in SA... silly really... :-)) :-))
-
Aldi will get there Mary. They are slowly making their way up the Qld coast.
I went into Aldi today and bought the milk frother, They only had a couple left and they were in an odd spot near the checkout.
-
How does that milk frother work? And how much milk does it hold?
I've had a Froth Au Lait frother (http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=froth+and+sauce&tag=googhydr-20&index=garden&hvadid=6631634616&ref=pd_sl_1bna8a537p_b) for several years and it works fine but the maximum capacity is 1 1/2 cups of milk and when I have company, I need more volume. I'm looking for an inexpensive secondary frother for when I have company.
I bought a Cocoa Grande (http://www.amazon.com/Back-Basics-CL400BR-60-Ounce-Hot-Cocoa/dp/B002JM106K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1322412843&sr=8-2) hot cocoa maker to heat milk for caffe lattes and it works perfectly to keep the milk at the correct temp but it seems that everyone always wants more foam.
I've tried a couple of other frothers and have been less than impressed with them, returned them, in fact.
The Bella "professional" frother simply did not produce the fine foam one wants.
The Breville has less capacity than the one I have as does the Keurig.
Froth Au Lait does make a professional model ($399.95) but I don't need that great a volume most of the time and can't see buying something just to use at parties.
-
It only holds 125mls for frothing and up to 250 mls for heating only which gave me more than enough froth
I will use Froth only function when i need to make more coffees and heat the milk elsewhere
great for babyccinos

I have never tried to make coffee in my TM, wouldnt know where to start.
I have a great coffee machine, its a Delonghi, Prima Donna, it layers the milk in lates, grinds the beans and the coffee tastes great. All at the touch of a button. I often buy Miss Mauds beans.
H :)
-
Oh well, I guess I will just buy the newer version of the one I have.
-
Well, I bit the bullet and bought one (cost saving and availability got me).....that is, put my name on a list, and they rang me Saturday morning to say it was in.
Apparently they are flying off the shelves, and finding one is like getting a golden ticket in your chocolate bar!
Now to be fair, I don't drink short/long blacks, I only have my coffee as a latte, in a tall mug and with sugar.
I tried "Tauro" (strength 5)......blerk, tipped down the sink. Too wishy-washy.
I tried "Perugia" (strength 5).....blerk, tipped down the sink. Wishy-washy again.
I tried "Reggio" (strength 9).....blerk, tipped down the sink....tasted like a weak perculated coffee.
By now the box was dragged out, ready to return to sender!.....thought I would give it one last chance, as I would rather pay 1/3rd of what my coffee pods cost me now.
So next day I bought the strongest one...."Milano" (strength 10).......was pretty good, not exactly like the coffee I enjoy, but close.
I then programmed the machine to express 30ml instead of the factory set 40ml........Bingo! :)......almost identical to my mokodor coffee!
It's staying now.
-
my favourite is the valletta ;D
-
Good news Maddy.
-
Anyone who bought the Aldi machine I was wondering if you could help me clarify a couple of things. Someone I know is hoping to get one. My big clarification is the pods. They are totally different to the nespresso aren't they and the pods can only be bought at Aldi I think????
Thanks if anyone can help me. :-*
-
I have had a few over the years but this is the best ever. My DH insisted on it after I said NO! Don't ya love a man who can't take NO for an answer. Mind you it cost more than the Thermomix but is makes wonderful HOT coffe and manic strong hot lattes.

(http://img.tapatalk.com/7bd3ca14-0dfa-bbe5.jpg)Oops! It is a Swiss made Jura.

I must be a coffee snob too as I have never knowingly drunk instant coffee and in fact have never bought any. The smell of the stuff is vile.
Over the years I must have bought over 20 coffee makers. My last one was a Delongi which was good but the coffee was not hot enough.
So I went to Hardly Normal to buy a Nespresso machine made by Delongi, as it was on sale really cheap, and was told the coffee pods were not really coffee and that it produced an instant like brew that was not hot plus the pods are expensive.
Meanwhile my DH spotted the Jura display with the LCD gimmick and HAD TO HAVE IT. We disagreed and off to the car where he promptly started the whine, as they do, so back into the store and DH whips out HIS credit card which was so unusual i was gobsmacked. Before I could shut my mouth the machine was in the car!!!!
My new Jura is a semi professional machine and makes the coffee really hot I think because all the guts are stainless steel and not plastic so the water stays hot while expressing. It does use a fair amount of water when cleaning the lines after every use but it has a 1.8 litre tank. The Macchiato Lattes are awesome. Really strong and really hot, not that I drink milk much ,but my friends seem to drop in more frequently now.
I buy locally grown and roasted coffee which is a dark roast and produces a strong but mellow flavour. The cost works out to less than 40 cents a cup. It comes with a jug you can keep in the fridge for frothing the milk . There is also an electric refrigerated holder for the jug as an accessory but no thanks.
This machine woud be great for a B & B or an office. If you love good coffee then talk to the boss.

Ohh dear. I must be a coffee luddite. No coffee machine in the house. Tho I do like a plunger coffee. I bought an Aldi machine before Xmas but I returned it unopened.
We decided to stay with Moccona at home and keep the real stuff as a special treat when we go out.
If I could make an equivalent coffee at home I think I would never convince DH to buy another coffee.
TC has reduced our eat out curries already.
-
I had one of the superautomatic espresso machines (Saeco Royal digital) for several years and rarely used it - I had a Senseo pod machine that made exactly the type of coffee I liked, especially when I made my own pods with coffee I roasted and ground myself.
It did cost significantly more than the TM31 and considering how little I used it, the whole thing was a serious waste of money. It was the top of the line and rated best at the time.
I finally gave it away last summer and the guys to whom I gave it sent me a Dolce Gusto as a thank you. It is fairly small, simple to operate and puts out lovely coffee drinks. It does use capsules that are somewhat expensive and (as is so often the case) a different shape and size than the other, most common K-Cups, but I don't really care. I like it.
It also produces an adequate espresso as it develops 15 bars of pressure (the Keurig only pushes 1.2 bars) which extracts more flavor. (In my opinion).
It's also cute. I posted a photo on this page (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=320.msg100496#msg100496).
-
Nothing wrong with plunger coffee. Many years ago when I was going to coffee mornings I would take my 2 cup plunger and ground coffee with me. I now realise what a pain in the aspidistra I was. Still am 40 years later. I would love to own a coffee roaster. I have seen small ones but they are noisy to run.

OMG andi I remember you posting that photo. I would buy that in a flash as it is gorgeous. Now I am sure ppl will be asking how to make your own senso style pods for their Nespreso machines. I would think they would be much cheaper to make or not!
If I live long enough and win the lottery I will plumb a coffe machine into the kitchen and the bedroom. I have a friend who built her kitchen with a special slot for her Thermomix. Magic.

They are different cookie.....won't fit each others machine.
The map coffee/hot chocolate capsules do fit though...available from office works, but I think they are nearly double the price of Aldi caps.
I still use mine a few times a day, and haven't had any issues.....it really makes a cheap latte or chino, if you like the tast of the coffee.
I still only use Milano ( number 10).

I'm off to Brisbane next weekend and am considering finding an Aldi store and buying their coffee machine. If I do, should I take it as hand luggage on the plane or check it in? I was hoping to just take hand luggage as I'm only going for the weekend, but now I'm not sure what to do. Can anyone help?

If it fits in the overhead rack and weighs less than whatever is the limit for the airline for carry on luggage then there is no problem.
You will be lucky to find one. I would do my research first and locate a store that actually has one in stock then beg to put your name on it.
Be prepared to de -construct everything to accommodate the machine even if you have to separate the parts to put in your hand luggage.

Thanks Gert,
I've been to Aldi's website, and they say that they will not provide phone numbers for their stores or the availability of any stock at specific locations. I might try the white pages and see how far I get. I've never been to Brisbane, so I don't want to spend the whole time visiting Aldi stores in the off chance I can buy a cheap coffee machine. There are heaps of other things to see and do instead.

That is right . I really doubt that you will find it now as Aldi are all different and often it is once only when they get a container load in. I had a friend who got a wonderful telescope. Best bargain ever for a great German made product only to fine it was a never again thing. He was lucky.
With Aldi you really have to be there on the day. Wish we had one in Cairns. Every year I write to them pleading. Cairns is crap for shopping.

ist happened to me a few times when adli 1st opened in syd, u buy something. take it home, love it, go back to buy more and its gone :(. with the coffee machine and pods are always in stock i made sure of that b4 buying one, the milk frother is fantastic
