Title: ipad vs kindle?
Post by: Frozzie on October 12, 2011, 10:59:33 am
hi for those of you who have either an ipad or a kindle, is it necessary to get a kindle if you have an ipad...can you get the same kinds of ebooks to read on the ipad like you would on a kindle??

wanted to get a kindle and then noticed that the ipad2 has this option but dont know how limited it is or not at all?? any info would be appreciated..

I don't have my iPad (yet  :D) but what I do love about my kindle is that I can read it in full sunlight unlike a back lit screen. Also when you read from the kindle it definitely isn't like reading from a screen as such. I think it could also possible depend on how much you read. For the amount I read, I definitely couldn't read from an iPad (or backlit screen)

Hi Kim,
I have both and use both regularly. The print in a kindle is e-ink and is much more like reading a book and easier on your eyes. Also turning the pages is more like reading. I like magazines or cook books on the iPad as my kindle is black and white. I have had my kindle a couple of years maybe you can get colour now, not sure. Kindles have come down in price here in WA, and are now available fom woolies and big w.

I would love an iPad but not for reading books from, love my kindle, I feel the same as faffa about the kindle. Wonder what recipe books would be like on the ipad in colour?
You answered my question Bedlam, while I was typing this.

I have both too.  The kindle is great for reading in bed or in fact anywhere.  I find the glare of an iPad a bit too much in the boudoir. The iPad is great so I can keep up with all of you, plus I get my work emails no matter where I am (is that good or bad?) the kindle is beside the bed, light to travel with and a wonderful device to have

Xxx

I have a Kindle which I just love to bits - it is a joy to read from.  I really don't like the idea of reading for too long from anything which is backlit, but would love an Ipad (or the new Kindle Fire) to use in the kitchen and to carry around.
Hope that helps. :)

Sorry Jeninwa - it's not out yet. Not until Nov 4 and then only in the US. Lord only knows how long they will make us wait for it here in Oz. But it's only $200!

Amanda I have been goggling and guess what

The All-New Kindle Fire (Kindle 4) will officially be released for world consumption on November 15, 2011 in time for the Christmas period!  Analysts are already predicting that it will be bigger than the iPad. from this site: http://ebookreadersdirect.com.au/buy-kindle-fire-kindle-4/

Frozzie I have both and find it difficult to compare their functions run parallel.  It is far easier to read the kindle while lying down but saying that DH manages successfully with the ipad - (actually he has no choice as I have the kindle). Have a read of this article (http://www.go4expert.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23749) if you haven't already done so!!!  Something that I did not realise until after purchase was the ability to transfer word files after connecting it to the computer, then you can read them at your convenience. You will be extremely happy with the ipad 2, it is 50% thinner and 30% lighter than the original, so the sales person told me while I was having a play at the Apple store in Sydney.   :)  :)

I too have both.  I only use my iPad for reading the odd book where the colour pictures are important (for instance my camera manual looks much better when using the kindle App on the iPad).

I love my kindle for the bulk of my reading - it is much smaller and so easier to hold and the page turning becomes seamless after a while.   I've got to read a real book as my next book club book isn't on kindle, and I'm finding it much less comfortable.

As others have said, the iPad is better for recipes and also for typing onto, for receiving emails and for web searching.    If I'd have known about the Kindle Fire being on its way, I may well have waited before getting the iPad but I don't regret having one at all.

i have been checking them both out...ipad2 will be a christmas gift and for the kindle the thing that is attractig me to the kindle fire is the fact that its colour, however its not yet available in France and dont know when it will.  We have other models available here..there is also a promo here for the one with the keypad for half price roughly..

does anyone think the colour is useful...im thinking for possible mag subscriptions but then again if i have the ipad2 then maybe not necessary and also cookbooks???

I like the pureness of the black and white for reading on the kindle.   If I had magazine subs or newspapers, I would probably get those on the iPad because of the bigger screen and it's easier to navigate around (on the kindle you have to use little arrows rather than on-screen swiping).   But the Kindle Fire is bound to have better navigation.

I suspect you're not going to go wrong either way - depends how soon you want your kindle.  I registered for the kindle in the UK almost as soon as it was announced and it took about a month to arrive.

I'm coming onto this thread a bit late.  I got my kindle for Xmas, specifically because we did a lot of overseas travel this year.  I placed the order (I think) around the beginning of December but it was mid January before I got it because of high demand at that time of year.  It is very easy to read because of the e-ink technology and I got used to it very easily and quidkly.  My only negative is that you are tied to Amazon whereas with some, if not all, of the other e-readers there is the facility to 'borrow' books, like a library, instead of having to buy but, having said that, most of the kindle books are pretty cheap, if not free in the case of books that are out of copyright.

I got the cover, with light, to go with it as well and whilst this makes it just a little bulkier it is worth it as it protects the kindle and you also have the light for reading at night.

You can get free ebooks from Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org/)  for the Kindle

and there is also freeebooks for Kindle (http://freeebooksforkindle.org/).

ah just read that the kindle fire will not have the e ink but the ipad2 does so if i get a kindle it will be the black and white versions as the colour one is not as good as the ipad2..as that was the advantage point of the kindle for reading im guessing the kindle fire is more of a competitor to the ipad than it is a newer version of kindle to read??

I am a dedicated techie but I will not be getting the Kindle Fire for a while yet.  Just as there were bugs in the first Kindle (and I waited till it had been out a year before I got one), I will wait until I know the new version is stable before getting into it.  As I have two currently, a second generation and the third generation, I really don't need another at this time.   I have an iPad but rarely use it and currently it is on loan to a friend who is on a trip and her iPad was dropped the day before she left and needed one for downloading photos (professional photographer).   Her little son was "helping" her pack and fell while carrying the iPad - it would probably have survived being dropped but having a 6-year-old land on top of it was a bit too much. ;D
I offered her my MacBookPro as it has much more memory and a high-speed DVD burner but she opted for the smaller and lighter iPad.
I've mentioned before that I have had Macs since they first appeared.  In fact, I still have the precursor "Lisa" which was the first computer with a mouse.  Before that I had Apple I, II and the ill-fated III.
I was saddened about the death of Steve Jobs, he certainly changed the world in some very positive ways.

I haven't got a kindle yet but have been using the iPads since the day there were released in Australia. The iPad 2 is definitely thinner and lighter than iPad 1 which makes it more suitable for reading in bed but I would still like to be able to read books outside so am thinking of getting a kindle now that they have come down in price. I use my iPad so much while traveling for work, as a recipe book for surfing the web, writing and receiving emails and everything in between that its a struggle to keep it charged. Froze you will find the magazines fantastic on the iPad and I don't think the kindle will be able in the short term to replicate the interactivity in magazines you can get with the iPad. The few cooking magazines and books I've download are cheaper and have great step by step tutorials.  There also fantastic on line versions of many major newspapers which are worth looking at and quite often they have free trial periods which you can take advantage of.

Anybody know the cheapest place to purchase a kindle in Oz?

if you're wanting to read books i would definitely go kindle. the ipad screen is just not good for your eyes.

however if you're wanting computer / games etc then ipad is good. go both ;)

cheapest place to buy kindle in australia is still direct from amazon ;) (however i just got mine from woolies lol)
personally i'm not that keen on the kindle, i prefer my kobo - BUT i'm up to kobo no 3 and about to send it back as i have had so many problems with each of them it's not funny. if only they'd work properly i'd much prefer the kobo over the kindle!!!

Made a snap decision and after some price checking found Amazon was the cheapest so have just ordered a wifi kindle and cover with light, the expected delivery is only next Tuesday so cheaper price and faster delivery than I could get online in australai! We are going away for a few days break and my iPad is no good for reading outside so looking forward to the Kindle. I read that you can also download pdf's to the kindle is that correct? I get some magazines in PDF format so it would be good to have them available.

If you sign on to your account at Amazon, you can go to this page (http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200375630) which has instructions on how to download various media and docs to the Kindle.

Frozzie - there is not much point in getting the Ipad & the Kindle Fire as they are similar in that they are browsers, whereas the standard Kindle is great for just reading. Probably best to get the standard Kindle for reading and then an Ipad or Fire for all the other stuff.
If you are impatient both my Kindles were delivered to me here in Australia within a week, so there isn't much waiting time at all and I have just found out that I can download library books onto it for free! ;D

My kindle (s)  are right up there with my Thermomix as something I would go out and purchase the next day if something went wrong with the one I have. I am not sure yet if comparing the ipad with the kindle fire is comparing apples with apples.I will be looking with interest at the "fire" once it is out in the market but I am not sure if it will have the "apps" support that makes ipad ( and android tablets ) so popular. From what I have read it is using and "amazon" version of Andriod. So I will assume that not all Android apps with automatically be compatible with it.
For me ...I think the ipad and Kindle fill different needs, to be honest they are both small enough that it is easy to carry both....right now my kidle is slipped into the side pocket of my handbag! ( JUST in case I get stuck in traffic or get a few free minutes at work! )

I would definetly recommend kindle for novels, and iPad for the kitchen and mags and cookbooks. I have the more expensive kindle( you can purchase new books anywhere without wifi) however have bought many of the cheaper wifi ones for gifts, just as good just buy books before holidays. Do it Kim, sure you won't regret it.

I love my kindle and leather cover with light  :-* :-* :-* and probably read a book a week. Highly recommend one.
I have a small bright pink Sony notebook for all my computer needs. I chose to get this over the iPad because the keyboard is so much easier to type with and for travel I can still operate my business without any computer capabiity restrictions, and it is very small in relation to a laptop. I'm not really into all the apps, and know that it wouldn't suit my requirements as I already have an iPhone which I only use to make/receive calls and send text. If you have a friend with an iPad I would ask them about it, and get them to show you what it can and cannot do in relation to what your specific requirements are. Even though I have an average understanding of computers, when I go into the retail shops I don't really understand what the salesmen are talking about and just have to nod my head all the time.

Thanks andiesenji, I'll have to do some Kindle research on the weekend.

Can you confirm it saves the actual book files in a "cloud"? I'm running out of space on my iPad and while I still want the convenience of having books available on my iPad through the Kindle app I won't have room to store a large amount on there, currently I removed them from the iPad as soon as they are read and only ever have one or two available to read without downloading.

You can choose to save your Kindle books on their server, if you don't want to keep them on the Ereader itself. The Kindle model I have will hold up to 3,500 books That is a significant amount by anyone's standards!  ;)

Once you buy a Kindle book at Amazon, it stays in your Archive.  As soon as I read a book, and I read about one a day, I remove it from the Kindle and if I want to retrieve it I either go to my Amazon account on my computer, select "Manage Your Kindle" and the most recent books are on the first page.  You can search by title or by author.

You can also access "Archived Items" directly from the Kindle.
The archive will show up how you select, by Title or by Author

and you do have to occasionally connect the device to get the up to date archive info downloaded.
My older Kindle hasn't been connected for awhile and only shows 700+  books
The newer one is more up to date with the archive count because it has been connected more recently.

The battery life is considerably shortened the more books you have on the device.  You just have to re-charge more often.  And keeping the Wi-Fi or 3G wireless connection open also means you need to re-charge more often.

I don't have a Kindle, I have a Sony ereader and just adore it. It is the 6 inch touch version. Turning pages is done with a small movement of the fingers. It is great to carry around  and incrediblyeasy to read from. I also have a light on it and a leather cover. I used the light a lot when we were travelling as DH was asleep and I read.
I hope to eventually read all the books I have and then only use the ereader. At the moment I do both.
I'd love an ipad but I think that may be a while off.

Thanks so much for the photos and instructions. I've been using the kindle app on my ipad since the first ipad was introduced and have been archiving all the books so it looks like it all operates in a similar way - hopefully not much of a learning curve to go through. andi - 1 book per day, are you an exceptionally fast reader or spend a lot of time reading? Are you able to remember the plot lines for long after you've read them? I find the faster i read the quicker I forget the book!!!

Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned a book title - it might get us all going on a whole different topic.

PS.  Water for Elephants is a really good book  ;D

Frozzie, on the Amazon kindle site US there is a page for international shipping for the kindle.
there is a blue strip near the top of the page with this (Live outside the U.S.? Kindle is available to ship outside of the U.S. from this page).

thanks faffa but nevermind my impatience won out and i ended up just buying it from the french amazon just now...anywhere but us is far more expensive...the standard kindle was listed as 79USD and in france 99 euros ( the usd is much less than the euro but they block the counbtries from buying elsewhere..maybe not oz as there is no australian amazon)  so got the normal and only kindle available in france..but it can hold up to 1400 ebooks so thats a fair few books and has all the extras on it..wifi etc etc.  at the checkout it said it was impossible to send to my address and that i should purchase from amazon.fr....seriously annoying!

the US would get you with taxes if they didnt with postage anyway...so would end up the same unless you live in the states :((  pity my girlfriends is no longer in seattle (snif)!

advantage is that i should get it tomorrow or latest the day after....yay!!

ok was typing as you guys were posting...will check it out anyway but i will probably end up with the one i got anyway  :)

ok for the same kindle it goes from 79USD to 109USD just by selecting outside the US (just for the unit) then they add extra charges (basically taxes even though they say no taxes) plus postage so ends up alot more than the same one here in the end but in france there is only one model..the new kindle there arent any others as yet...

the keyboard 3G says works internationally...meaning downloading new ebooks right??? as all kindles work internationally dont they as far as reading the books downloaded???

i have ordered this one now (new kindle) and might get DH the keyboard one for christmas lol (then swap them over hihi) plus i will have the ipad2....oh so many more books!  DH will be happy in the sense at least he wont see them all lol!

No longer interested in the kindle fire as i think its just the poor cousin of the ipad or trying to be...its not meant only for reading like other kindles as it doesnt have the eink technology...

Froze, I know this is a bit late but I purchased via the link others have posted. I purchased the new one which was the cheapest as I figured I'm never in my lifetime going to read more than 1300 books and I use my iPad for all things so just looking for the most compact that will allow me to read outside.

yes i bought the same one wonder...just ended up cheaper for me to buy it in france than from the US...i bought the latest kindle (not kindle touch or kindle keyboard) however i think i will get the kindle keyboard for DH at chrissy that way he can buy books wherever he is in the world with work :)  and even better instead of free postage which takes 4 to 5 days there was an option for next day delivery...took that  ;D  i have alredy downloaded the kindle apps on laptop and pc and started downloading a few books...there are alot however i have foudn the free ones are mainly for other ebooks and not the kindle..

I get free ebooks from Project Gutenberg (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?action=post;topic=7505.45;num_replies=50)   and from freeebooks for Kindle (http://freeebooksforkindle.org/)
but Amazon has a lot of books that are .99˘ to 1.99 that are very good, depending on what you like.

Most of Georgette Heyer's regency "romances" and her mysteries (like Agatha Christie) are on Amazon and many are discounted.

Once you buy the books or select the free ones at Amazon, you can download them to any Kindle that you register with your account.

You can also transfer them from/to your computer - Kindle.

Frozzie, about a year ago there was another kindle discussion on here (in fact, it was the very first time I had heard the word kindle and had to look it up).  At that time transferring of books from one kindle to another was discussed.  It seems it can be done, but for it to work I think you have to re-register the "receiving" kindle.  If you have a chance to search the forum I'm sure you will find the thread - I'm at work at the moment so can't do it just now .... but I bet I know someone who can (JD?).

The instructions are here (http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=2245146011).  Provided by Amazon for each of the free or nearly free online library sources.

Frozzie, on my ipad i've got 7 different ebook reader apps all of which I've used in the past. I've only used the kindle app for books i've either purchased or sourced free from Amazon then i've got eReader, barnes&nobile, Stanza, iBooks, iFlow reader and OverDrive. I sometimes find books are cheaper via one of the other readers rather than Kindle and some I can borrow for free from my local library via OverDrive, these apps will only work on you iPad of course but it shows there's not only one way to get an ebook copy. If you do a bit of research you will find lots of ways of accessing free and cheap ebooks on the iPad.

I have done this with my SIL, however when we tried with my DM ( who has a newer model) we couldn't get it to work. Wonder if they have changed something although can't see how it shouldn't work.

I have 3 kindles in my account, all three have different nicknames. When I want to transfer a book on say Kindle C I go to my computer and look which Kindle it has been sent to and change setting over to Kindle C. Next time wifi for Kindle C turned on it will download. (Does that make sense?)

We last talked about Kindle here (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=4745.60)

Yeah, I have 4 on my account but I swapped all my collection with my SIL who isn't on my account. They aren't archived just put directly into kindle so can't transfer from there( she had over 100 books and I had around 60). but when we tried again for our mothers. By removing from our account and then reregistering to the other it wouldn't work.

When you go to Manage Your Kindle  you should see your Kindle Library listed.
At the right side of the page is a button titled "Actions" with a down arrow.
When you click on this you should see:

If you click on the first you should get a secondary window that allows you to select whichever of your Kindles are registered.
You can also Loan this title which will bring up a window where you can enter the email address and the name of the person to whom you want to send it and also a message if needed.

Thanks for that, I knew we could loan now but wasn't sure how. We felt happy sharing as we would have done the same with books, and now I have such a lot to get through.

I know Hally's problem with ipad - have to keep modifying my post when I see a silly error (like slot instead of lot)

That is fast delivery Frozzie, hope you are enjoying it, Wonder was it cheaper to buy yours in the US than hear in Australia? Haven't looked into the prices here as I already have one.
Title: Re: ipad vs kindle?
Post by: Wonder on October 15, 2011, 01:09:24 am
Jeniwa, the kindle was $109 plus $21 delivery for the newest model which isn't on sale here until November (I think), the preorder cost at Dick Smith is $139 so only marginally cheaper. I also bought the leather cover with integrated light which was on sale for I think $49.95 which only increased the delivery by $3 so all up I think it probably worked out cheaper and I'll definitely get it before I go at the end of the week which wasn't guaranteed with purchasing in Australia unless I got the more expensive ($159) model.

luckily they just released the new base model here in France last week i think so for me it was cheaper in the end but what i dont like is that i had to move my amazon account from .com to .fr and i cant buy books from amazon.com for kindle unless i move my account back and forth and i dont know how many times i can do that??? i may have to write to them to ask as french books intersest me alot less than english ones and the english books on .fr are alot less limited in general.

i didnt like how they increase the price just because you live out of the US..the cover i got here is purple leather but has no integrated light so i got an clip on light..;may find another cover later on but thats all they had here for the moment!

only had a quick play as by the time i got time i was so tired...starting reading a book on it and 5 mins later zzzzzz but im very much loving the possibilities and will be searching how to source lots of new books as it can take up to 1400 ebooks apparently

by the way what are some recent books read or new ones that you would recomment to read...i already have water for elephants and the help and there is another one the lady of thelake that ill probably get but others???

My kindle is due to arrive tomorrow and I just realised I purchased the wrong cover and will need to return it. What type of covers and lights do people use for their kindle. I was looking at the cover with integrated light but am having second thoughts as I would prefer to read on the kindle without a cover at all so I guess that means I need to attached a book light or something similar. I'm wanting to keep the whole things as small as possible as I already carry my ipad with me everywhere.
Title: Re: ipad vs kindle?
Post by: Cuilidh on October 17, 2011, 12:17:35 am
Wonder, the case (with the light) doesn't take much more space than the kindle itself (I would guess perhaps 1cm at the most) and I would highly recommend it as it protects the kindle from damage if you are travelling with it or carrying it on a regular basis in your bag.
Title: Re: ipad vs kindle?
Post by: Bootobethin on October 17, 2011, 12:43:21 am
Wonder - I would also recommend the cover with integrated light. It is very compact and protects the Kindle very well. The light is integrated and takes no space at all and doesn't draw too much power. It makes the Kindle useful in all light situations and well protected to be dropped into all kinds of bags.  It is ready to be used in almost any situation!
Title: Re: ipad vs kindle?
Post by: Wonder on October 17, 2011, 01:57:16 am
Thanks for the ideas.
I would still like the cover with integrated light but at the moment for the new model kindle it's only available direct from Amazon and including postage it will be approx $80 so that on top of the return postage for the one I purchased by accident makes for an extremely expensive cover. I might need to wait until I'm in the US next year or it becomes available in Australia and just get a cheaper cover as an interim. I'm happy to use my ipad if reading in a dark place as an interim measure.

What cover did you buy by mistake? You could sell it on ebay instead of returning it.
Title: Re: ipad vs kindle?
Post by: Amanda on October 17, 2011, 02:20:23 am
Wonder - I agree with the others. The cover protects the Kindle and makes it easier to hold in some instances. The light is so well designed that you wouldn't know it was there at all if not told.
Title: Re: ipad vs kindle?

I bought the one for the kindle keyboard which is bigger than the new model. I had a look at selling it on eBay instead of returning and the prices for an official amazon one were pretty hit and miss.

I really enjoyed Tuesday's with Morrie although was a little slow. Reading The Great Gatsby at the moment. Last night I was trying to convince my 11 year old son to read before going to bed and he was refusing (as he normally does) and then I let him choose a book from Amazon and use my kindle in bed and he couldn't get them quick enough. He even got up and was reading during breakfast, mind you the book he purchase was "the Underware Dare" and is a typical boy book full of toilet humour but at least it's got him interested in reading for a few days. DH even mentioned maybe we should get him one for Christmas!!! I'm sure the novelty will end relatively quickly though so won't be rushing out to purchase a new one.

I bought the Kindle case with the light but the wand which holds the light broke within a couple of weeks when I was showing it to someone and his shirt cuff caught the extended light.

Since then I purchased the Kandle II (http://www.amazon.com/Kandle-Ozeri-Designed-generation-readers/dp/B004PAGLAE) which I like very much.  It clips onto the top of the Kindle, in or out of the "jacket" and is small and light enough to carry in a pocket and it comes with a protective bag.

Here it is closed: (http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h129/Basenjibabe91/HPIM4353.jpg)

And this shows it open with the light on - brightness is adjustable normal and bright.

I tried another that was sold at a book store but it was rather top heavy.  This one is lighter and easier for me to use.

You can also get lights that clip on to the cover (I tend to use these at night as they give a better light coverage than the ones that come in the kindle cover) - they are called Xtraflex Mighty Bright, but I won't put a link to them on here because it is off our web site so I don't think it is appropriate to do that.  If anyone wants more information on these please feel free to PM me.

Andie, I really like the look of that light. I notice on Amazon there are two different models, one from 2010 and a new model do you know the differences and if it's worth the extra money for the newer model? How long do the batteries last, they are selling what appears to be large packs of the batteries so I'm wondering if they have a short lifespan.

Cuilidh, thanks for the other option but I'm hoping to get a more compact one.

The batteries don't last as long as other types of batteries but I buy them in the large packs so they are relatively cheap.
They last longer on the lower setting and I actually prefer that for most reading - I sometimes make the text a bit larger too.

The newer one has three bulbs and gives a more even light (to my eyes) than the earlier one.  I actually bought the older version last December but had not even opened it when the II popped up on Amazon so I immediately returned the first one and got the newer.

I've tried a couple of other lights that belong to other people in my book club and I like this one much better.

The one that broke was the M-Edge that came with the M-Edge Kindle cover I purchased when I got my newest Kindle.

I have an iPad.  Next to the TMX it is my fav. gadget at the moment.  I have read over a 100 books on it in just under a year.  During that time I have still bought hard backs,  but not as many. I love the colour and the Apps.  I buy a recharge from Telstra for $150 so that I can use it pretty much any where. I can switch to WIFi if I don't want to use my $150.  When I buy a book,  say from KOBO,  my DH can read it also.  He also has an iPad.
It can do lots of things that I have not used yet,  but still I manage to learn something new to do with it every day.
What i miss is buying hard back books and swapping them with friends.  I also don't like the way it anticipates what i am writing and puts a word in ,  when I don't want it.  I think It can be set up, to not do this.
I use it in the kitchen when I am cooking,  and read in bed when i can't sleep.  I sometimes type messages on it to the Forum.  These are usually the ones with rather weird spelling.  When we are at the Dr.  and they wont to know what medication I or DH is on,  I just tap it up on the iPad.
I have had to have an extra pair of glasses made,  especially for reading the iPad in bed.
Sometimes I find a recipe that I like while still in bed,  so I send it to my MacBook computer,  in the study,  and then print it off later.
I haven't used a Kindle but while OS saw many people reading on them .  They loved them.
I can't print from the iPad.
