Title: Frozen strawberries in sugar
Post by: Vivaroo on September 29, 2011, 11:30:33 am
This isn't a Thermomix recipe request, really just seeing if anyone knows what I'm talking about as there are many knowledgable cooks that know the old fashioned country recipes.  My grandma used to bottle all their excess homegrown strawberries, I think just cut up with lots of sugar and frozen in jam jars.  I don't know if she would have added any extra flavouring, but as a kid I remember it being so yum and we had the frozen strawberries with vanilla icecream.  I was just washing up a container that held strawberries, and got a whiff of the sweet juice and suddenly I was back in Grandma's kitchen remembering all the delightful smells  :'(

In the EDC there is a recipe for stewed strawberries and rhubarb. May be something like that. I actually freeze my strawberries whole and work out what to do with them later.

Oh CreamPuff I don't think my grandma was that naughty but I am!  That's a good way to use up strawberries!

Thanks for thinking, pretty sure they weren't stewed as I remember hating all things stewed when I was a kid.

Frozzie I asked my mum but she doesn't know. Most probably she would buy a box of fruit cheap from the local growers, cut out the bad bits and freeze cut up with some sugar.  Nothing more complicated than that.  This I will do before the season is over, they're cheap at the moment.

Grandma's daughters all left home early for careers so didn't learn her cooking skills.  It's nice if things can get passed down and sad if lost.  But also good to have the choices we have of career, home or mix, not so much option in her day.

It is sad when things are lost like that...my nan passed away a few years back and recently I have been after certain recipes she always made but nobody seems to know...they have a rough idea but nobody ever 'learnt' how she did it..really is a pity...any grannies out there who cook write thigns down for your family!! The love of cooking gene is always there somewhere...i love old family recipes and little things like that..very special ...imagine having a gran like andie...that would be amazing!  In any case I learnt a few little things off her but due to distance and living all over I never spent much time around my nan in adult life and living over here made it impossible  :)

anyway give it a go and hopefully it will be that simple  :)

Oh yes, a gran like Andie would be the best!  I miss mine sometimes, ie when I started this post, and she died over 20 years ago when I was 14.

Yes the family recipes must be written down and passed on to someone, even if the kids/grandkids/nieces/nephews don't seem so interested at the time, one day someone will be.
