Anyone else like me?
The family and friends could live quite easily for at least 3 minths or longer on what i have in the pantry, fridge and all my freezers. We woud only need some fresh items.
We are having lasagna for tea, Ds fav! did I choose one alteady made, goodnees NO, thats for a rainy day!! So i will make a new one. I just cant help myself, i dont know where it comes from, but i panic what if i am sick or cant cook one day. My freezers only just shut and they are all neatly arranged.
I think it must be an illness, i like to make sure there is plenty just in case. Of course its worse now as i love TM.
Am I the only mad mum here!?!?
Hally :)
-
No Hally your not alone, my freezer is overflowing with just in case meals!
I am off to Hong Kong for 7 - yes 7 nights - and decided I need to cook up 6 kilos of mince into spaghetti bol sauce!!!!From that I have made 2 huge lasagne's to freeze and enough for 7 nights of spag bol!
My way of thinking of if I'm going to cook 500g of mince well why not cook 6 kilos same amount of effort, sort of.
Shan :D

I think you will find plenty of us on here Hally, it must be a disease or something ;D ;D When I got sick a couple of years ago and was raced off to hospital, the freezers were pretty full (as is always the case) but no-one knows what to do with real food. My neighbour went out and bought TV dinner type things and squeezed them into any space she could find for DH before his sister came down and took over his care before he went into the nursing home. So really, having food for a rainy day doesn't always work out being useful if those who have to feed themselves don't know what or how to do anything with the freezer contents. If you live outside the city limits I can see the merit of keeping a well stocked freezer but when you have shops just around the corner, it really isn't necessary. If we are sick and cannot cook, there are always home delivery meals available which would tide the family through until we were up on our feet again. I know that but like you Hally, I can't stop myself. It is just the mother hen instinct to look after our brood I think but I'm sure they would cope if they had to.
-
My 2 grannies, who I spent a lot of time with when I was growing up, always had full pantries and... I have a full pantry too :D
Both my grand-mothers went through some pretty tough time during the 2nd world war and always told me to always stock on basic ingredients: "you never know..."
My hubby grew up on a farm and was used to not go to the corner shop :) so we both like our full pantry AND a productive veggie patch & orchard. Our freezer is mostly used to store meat (home-grown too :)) with the exception of tomato sauces and excess summer fruit & veg (I do preserves in vacola jars too).
-
My pantry is always full too. And our freezers have plenty of meat and a few meals but not so many homemade meals as we rearly have left overs with a big family. I just cook a meal everyday. I don't like wastage and think if I filled the freezer with cooked meals they would mostly eventually be thrown away.
-
Carine, your story reminds me of my MIL who came to live with us after she had a stroke. When her house was cleared out for sale, there were toilet rolls and cakes of soap poked everywhere. If you opened a cupboard, they would fall out. Her grand-daugher is still using the soap supplies, well over 10 years down the track. MIL went through a depression so knew what it was like to go without life's little luxuries. There wouldn't have been much food in the house mind you.
-
I always thought when the kids are grow up and left home i would not cook so mush.
Oh boy, was i wrong, it gets worse. I would not know how to cook for 2
-
I was just thinking that the other day Hally when I was trying to squeeze something else into one of my two freezers and overcrowded pantry
-
Yay i am not alone.
JD you are right, rainy days dont come and if they ever did, takeout, dh trying to shovd simething in the oven etc will do. I must stop hoarding.
Lets all try.
Shanmac 6kgs now that is overkill!!!
I am going to reduce stocks of everything from now until we go on holidays, just buy the essentials and use what we have which inckudes meals for a rainy day left overs etc.
H :)
-
Yikes I don't know if I can cope with this topic! You really need to come to Ethiopia with us on our next trip Hally. It brings with it a great respect for food and an absolute tummy churning dislike for the wasting and hoarding of food.
Once you have used up the food you already have, menu planning and detailed shopping lists are really good ways to keep it all under control. I enjoy cooking a meal each night and Hubby takes left-overs to work for lunch so I don't tend to keep a lot in the freezer. Often defrosting and reheating a meal is more work than cooking a meal from scratch in the TM. :)
-
I know its shocking, a good friend of mine has a friend who has 2 boys from ethiopia (2 different families) they all go as a family from time to time, the stories are very sad.
Well i am changing this hoarding business.
I do menu pla, have for months, thats another problem, 3 in the family and a lot of recipes feed 6, so the freezer gets full of food. Dh often just has fruit for lunch, i normally have soup and ds has a few hot dishes and sandwiches.
We will get there, i am on a mission.
H :)
-
I hear you Hally. My New Years resolution( yes I know its only September) is to menu plan.
I would got to the supermarket at least 3-4 times per week. I am a very organised person but just cant get my head around menu planning.
Of course the NY resolution will come with the TMX & I'm sure that it is going to work!!
And yes 6kg is overkill have told my DH that if he sees/hears me mention that I am going to do it again to quietly & quickly remove 1/2 the mince!!!!
Shan :)
-
Menu planning is smart. I am not. I jam left over after left over into the freezer until it groans. Someone once told me a full freezer runs more efficiently so I am being green! I found a delightful Tupperware full of something delightful I made ages ago and made some TMX rice to go with it last night. Tonight will be another late night, so thankfully there is a Tupperware or two full of what I made on Sunday night (Hungarian Goulash from EDC and mashed potatoes). I am a food hoarder. Not of the mouldy of green variety but of the Thermolovely, cooked to absolute perfection and jammed into the freezer variety!!! Keep Thermomixing my loves. If this is the worst addiction we have, we really have a lot to celebrate!!!
xxx
;D
-
Lee you are so right.
As a friend said to me, you might be at home cooking 55 cupcakes, but thats much better than being out all day drinking and gambling.LOL
My freezer is a lot fuller since tm, yes I menu plan but there is only 3 of us, we dont like eating the same dinner 2 nights in a row, so los and behold it goes in the freezer. Lso ds 7 he won eat curry or spicy food, so they go in the freezer too.
Shanmac, you will want to cook everyday with tm, trying all the recipes and new foods you ndver dreamt you coul cook. Might be good to get yor freezer down now. ;)
H :)
-
Shanmac, empty that freezer now, fill up your staple ingredients and have a quick Tupperware party in the meantime as you will need somewhere to store all your new creations!!!!!
xxx
;D
-
Lee I actually thought this morning that I may need to have a Tupperware party as freezing the 6kg of mince I cooked used up nearly all my Tupperware!!! :D
Sounds like TMX & Tupperware may go hand in hand!
-
Oh they do and an ipad to top it all off
;D
H
-
wow you ladies are talking my lingo
l do to like to have a full pantry /fridge /freezer
and will l buy all sorts of specials / bargains because it cheaper and you never know when you will need them
l would like to join your mission
to be more organize and not hoard so much its such a waste
but l cant help it it just happens
but l will make and effort to remember when shopping that l dont need it
and that l can make do with what l have
-
I am just buying staples that i need and any fresh produce that i need for the next 2 weeks.
So whatever meals i have and frozen meat i will use. Hope this helps reduce my stocks.
Hally :)
-
I do menu plan, the reason I have so much is because I did a shop at Costco and purchased a lot of things in bulk that should last me for the next year (some things anyway)
-
Hally, have to tried doing half quantities of any of the recipes?
-
Yvette what did you buy? Was it heaps cheaper?
-
Shanmac I bought things like:
72 rolls sorbent toilet paper $30.00
Box 50 smiths chips $12.99
4 litres of BBQ sauce $8.39
4 litres of tomato sauce $6.99
4 x toothpaste $12.99
Bought lots more bread, milk, cheese, chicken thighs, marg, paper towels. I think it is cheaper you have to buy bigger quantities than you would normally buy.
-
I should but not sure of reducing cooking times etc. I know they suggest 20% less, but always worry that it wont turn out.
Hally :)
-
Hally it is a sickness of the personality. Am a saver of everything and love doing it. ;D. I have battled with this problem all my life and still are. Make small gains and then give in when I see a special or something for 1/2 price. When I read a very interesting recipe on the Forum, I don't have to go to the shops( 20 mins away), I usually can find what I need in the pantry or freezer. I have given up feeling guilty about my obsession with food and try and compensate by cooking for charity, (like you with your cup cakes). go with your obsession and share.
-
Chookie, well said :)
Hally :)
-
Having lots of food isn't a problem Chookie if you use it up and share it with others. I think it's only a problem if the food isn't used and is wasted. :)
-
Yes Chelsea, agree, no waste here, plenty to share it with. Elderly Citz, pensioners and cooking demos to raise money for Cancer. Fund raising for Africa. I also think that the hoarders are also usually very generous with their goodies.
-
When two of my sisters come over for a visit they always leave with plenty of goodies
When friends or family are having babies my present is a few weeks of main meals already for the freezer
-
Never any waste here
BONUS - Lasagna only 1 portion left tonight DH taking for lunch tomorrow & added value DS wants spag bol from freezer for lunch.
We are on a snowball roll here.
Secret, didnt serve anyhing else with meal. yay LoL
Hally :)
-
Tonight DS has asked for spaghetti bol, DH & I are having spinach & ricotta caneloni from the freezer, serves 4, so lunch tomorrow too. A meal i made a while back. Determined to get the freezer down and eatup left overs. Will be over pasta for a few days after that.
For lunch I had a small serve of alvins thai green chciken curry, from the freezer.
Money spent today ZERO.
Yay
Hally :)

Well dont cook!!!!
H :)

Easy to say Hally "don't cook". We cannot move in our house since I returned from these conferences. The fridge and freezer are bursting. And as I live like a German, there is NO room for another fridge or freezer in the garage because we do not have one! There is only so much I can eat. Maybe we need a lodger? Or a family of lodgers? I am quite particular about my dogs diet so I cannot give delicious Thermotreats to them as they are tiny little pomeranians. And don't get me started on cooking their food too. I have tried that and I almost had a breakdown (granted, it was before Thermie came into my life).
I can just see it now, a new forum for totally addicted Thermomixers that CANNOT stop cooking. Evidently, it is like any other addiction. I wonder what the 10 step Thermoaddiction might look like.... Here is my slant on step one (stolen off the AA website).
1. We admitted we were powerless over Thermomix—that our lives had become unmanageable because we cannot see the light in our refrigerators because we have so many little containers of delicious treats that we simply cannot part with....
xxx
;D
PS I am not and would not ever make fun of anyone with a serious addiction so please take my comment in the spirit in which it is intended - pure fun!
-
I did Lee & found it hilarious. Nice start to the day. :D
-
When I get a build up of meals and baked goods I tend to use my thermomix to make other things like jams, stock pastes, cordial, chocolate topping etc. I still get to use my thermie, but don't end up with an excess of bulky items in the freezer or left-overs in the fridge. :)
-
Left overs tonight from freezer, slowly slowly
H :)
-
I need to know how to stock my freezer with ready made things, we never have leftovers or enough to freeze for another meal. I keep meaning to have a day of cooking for the freezer but it never happens. I have three hungry kids plus one hungry husband.
-
I would start with sauces Napolitana, Bolognese then soups
-
If I wanted to do some meals especially for the freezer medusa, here are some recipes that freeze really well.
Chelsea's Tuna Strudel (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=2883.0)
Chelsea's Chicken Kiev (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=3879.0)
JulieO's Beef Enchiladas (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=1645.0)
Chookie's My favourite Quiche (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=5690.0)
You can freeze just about anything - lasagne, curries, stews and those Fundj suggested.
-
medusa
Try the honey & soy chicken ,makes heaps and freeze really well.
-
I always have bolognaise sauce in the freezer ready to go for lasagnas etc.
Curries freeze well.
make 2 batches at a time 1 to eat now & 1 to freeze.
Mind you I freeze anything near enough.
Hally
-
Hally, you are the Queen of freezer meals ;D
-
I have been having a good laugh reading all this. I tend to put leftovers into the freezer and when we were away DD used most of them up when she didn't get home until quite late. Usually I try to get rid of them but having 'choose your meal' nights over the weekend.
Speaking of buying cheaply, DH went down to see his Mum on Saturday and she gave him 2 coconuts she had bought cheaply. When we opened them they were so off the house literally stunk.
When we cleaned out MIL's house when she went to the nursing home we found frozen food from over 10 years ago (use by date) and tins that had either exploded or were really bulgy. MIL actually has a problem it is callled Diogenes Syndrome. She buys/steals/begs/takes and collects everything she sees. Even though it is a diagnosed problem it is incredibly frustrating when you have to clean up and she is crying begging you to leave her things alone and shouting at you. We do get cross too.
The moral ladies....................keep adding to the freezer and pantry for that rainy day. You don't have a problem.
Sorry. Here endeth the lesson. :) :)
-
That would be so frustrating Cookie and yes, our bulging freezers are a completely different problem. I like JulieO's idea of having a freezer clean out every 3 months - I'd like to think I could work my way towards that and Hally certainly has inspired me and others to use up what we have in there so that we can start cooking again. I've taken 5 things out in the past 2 days and cannot see where they came from so I think I have a long way to go.
-
Ooh Cookie that really is a problem. 10 year old meat, OMG!! you would have to throw that out on rubbish day, gosh the stench alone would put me in hospitalLOL
Yes queen of freezer meals Judy.
Well i think by the weekend my freezer meals will be very low on left overs, my plan is to leave 1 large lasagna, 1 mm bol sauce, my curry pastes, a few odds & ends, and all my recently purchased meat and nothing else. Its looking good. Very very happy.
I still have a couple of items like chicken kievs that we need to use up too. Not planning on buying much until after our holiday, mainly milk and not much else.
I hope to be organised like julieO in future.
Happy with my freezer clean out.
Hally :D
-
A freezer clean out every three months? Rotate the mattress? Clean the windows? Pyrolytic clean the oven? Descale the kettle, iron and coffee machine?? Dry clean the duvet? Spring clean the linen cupboard?
Yes, these are all jobs I should do on the weekend, yet I seemed to find myself reading posts on the website and Thermomixing myself into a stupor. I would love to be the perfect wife but I'm just not!!!
Keep Thermomixing, let those freezers grown!!!!!!!!!

Lee
What a crack up !LOL
Hally :)
-
I agree, it's much more fun on the forum.
-
:) So yesterday, in stead of spending $170 for groceries, I spent $80 for the week, which included $40 for 2 lots of olive oil on special.
I have 3 freezers full, and heaps of veges in the vege garden, So saved $140
Robyn
-
I was the same Obbie all we needed this week was milk and surface spray I think around $10 for the weekly shopping bill not bad.
-
Snap milk & finish dish washing tablets. Same next week, maybe a few veggies and milk
YAY more money for holidays
Happy Hally :)
-
Hally you are so fun.
i wish I havd more shops here, to shop in.
Robyn :D
-
Yes Obbie cant wait to start shopping in Hawaii.
H ;D
-
When do you go to Hawaii Hally?
-
I just started reading this thread and had to laugh. I don't have a home at the moment. (It's my own choice. Don't worry! I'm not living on the streets ;) ) All of my big stuff is in storage but I have 6/7 weeks to use up as much of my food as possible before I palm it off to a friend or family member. So, I have just a back-packer style bag of cloths & a pair of boots to clothe me but the rest our 4WD completely loaded with my pantry items! I even threw half of it out before we left our house. Ha ha!
I'm currently driving around with:
• a milk crate of spices
• a crate of various soy sauces, vinegars, liquids
• and two big square basket things of things in containers like flour, grains, pasta, legumes.
The thing that did my head in was that I have a MILK CRATE of spices and I'm attached to every single one of them. Hmmm...
-
sim
why dont you use the spices to make chookies KFC spice mix
cookie told us in the thread that she used it while travelling
and it great on lots of stuff like steak, wedges, chicken

All have great hols and recharge the batteries. Hally, if you tell them you have a TMX they may invite you into their kitchen.
-
Enjoy your holidays everyone. Must be school holidays for most.
-
Good news, DS's new friend (who I must say is skinny) loves food. For afternoon tea he ate a whole chicken & sweetcorn pie, 3 pieces of kfc chicken & nearly a whole slice of cake, and a glass of milk. DS ate 3/4 of pie and was full. This boy s a great find for extra food to disappear.
Mind you all the pies have gone now, but i have frozen 1 bowl of kfc and we have a bowl to eat too.
Freezer sort of going down, not as much as I hope for as made pies & chicken
H :)
-
Thanks everyone for the well wishes - myself and 6 girlfriends will be great!! :D
-
Hally, it sounds as if that lad would eat you out of house and home if he was there too long. Wonder if he will the tea his Mum serves up tonight :o
-
You are going to have a great time.
H :)
-
JD I must admit he ate heaps for a 7 year old, could keep him a few days for left overs :) then my left vers would be all gone. I think a sleepover next time i ave a lot of food woukd be good.
:)H
-
Hally life is just amazing how solutions to problems just appear - who would ever think that an innocent young boy would solve your over loaded freezer and allow you to keep on keeping on with your cooking mojo!!!!! (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-happy105.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)
-
I know, his mum has picked him up, they took 1/2 my easy chocolate cake, and he wants to come for sleepovers, so i said YES OF CORSE, as many as you like.LOL
H :)
-
How are all the left overs going?
I have 3 portions of lasagna
1 large soup

Thats it with left overs, yay
Of course i have lots of meat and bits & pieces, but so happy left overs are so low now. yay

Thanks JD, we have lots of space. ;D
H :)
-
That's awesome Hally. Well done! ;D
