Title: Buying large amounts meat
Post by: Halex on September 15, 2011, 01:51:20 am
This really intrigues me.

Where do you buy such large amounts.

Just go into the butchers and say i would like a cow, pig whatever next week please.
Find a farm, knock on the door and ask the same.
I have no ide ???
Is it much cheaper?

I would love buy chicken in bulk, we use chicken nearly everyday. Ds loves chicken breast sandwiches for lunch. Having TM is great as it chops it up for me and makes it go a little further

Hally, I use to buy bulk meat from my butcher when all the kids were at home and it was a lot cheaper, but that is a few years ago, side of lamb, or a side of beef, some butcher will pack into the size you want, we preferred  to pack our own, and then vac seal (no freezer burn) and it last longer. Have a talk to your butcher, he should be able to help or there is Mondo meat my friend just bought from them a bulk pack. There is e a place in Osborne park where you could buy bulk chicken haven't been there for years. Sorry I cant remember there name.

Thanks Jen. I dud nit have a clue. I will talk to my butcher when we get back from hawaii, but i dont think i will have the space. So need to run down our freezer

Is it much cheaper. I would have to buy a sealer and pack it myself into portion sizes suitable for us.

:) Hally, we have bought all our meat in bulk for the last 10 years.
Our local butcher  does it all for us.
We buy a whole beast, he cuts and packs it to what we want, on the cut up sheet.
About $5.50 per kilo.

The last 1/2 beast we got for free, and we will get another 1/2 beast for free in about 5 months. (all we pay is for the butcher to cut and pack)

We buy lamb, pork, bacon, beef, chicken, fish all in bulk.

Oh I am so glad I married a multi skilled DH. He is a shearer , butcher, farmer, truck driver and concreter. Very handy when you need bulk meat for the freezer. But I Think having 2 DH's is illegal in australia. Lol.  ;D

I and a few friends brought a a cow (and split it up) a few times from this company http://www.dbctalkabouttaste.com.au/ (http://www.dbctalkabouttaste.com.au/) Dardanup butchering company.  They cut it up how you want and then they delivered it to us. It is excellent meat and works out quite cheap.

Yes Frozzie I am hopeless,LOL

I am going to order the  lamb when we are back from hawaii.

My lamb tob nly has 2 items in it. Mind you i dont think 1whole lamb is going to fit nicely in my tub, so will have to look at reorganising a little bit more.

Grass fed beef, this seems expensive, but i dont have a clue ???

1/4 Angus Beef Pack - Deposit
Approx. 35 - 50 kg Natural Grass Fed Angus Yearling Beef. $17.50/kg full price between $612.50 - $875.00 This is our most popular pack that will...

Obbie, your meat at $5.50 per kg approx is amazing

:) Hally the most we pay for a full beef, or 1/2 (side of beef) is $5.99 per kilo.

Its just the normal price for bulk.

It saves us $2000 per year when you buy beef, pork, lamb, fish, chicken in bulk, all the time.

we have 3 chest freezers, and 2 1/2 are full at the moment.

I have never heard of meat that cheap either even in bulk??? but I have never bought bulk in oz either

obbie are you getting it from a butcher or a wholesaler??  We used to pay nothing for our beef but it was our cows lol...and the payment for the butcher cutting it up in the proper cuts was giving him the bits we didnt want

you guys are lucky though as beef over here is super expensive, especially if bought at the butcher...first time i bought a fillet of beef, around 1kg piece it cost me over 50 euros...nearly fainted there and then in the butchers and that was 10 years ago lol

over here our bulk beef which is not a side of beef but usually in 10 to 15 kg boxes, vac packed in different cuts is 12 euros a kilo...if you shop around you will soon get an idea of price for bulk in oz

 :) I buy from a local butcher.
We have 3 that we have used, in the last 10 years,
all the same price though, all within 20 minutes of here.

This time we got a side of beef for free from a friend, so we just payed the butcher the cut up / packing. $200.00 In 6 months we get another side for free too.

Sorry Wonder, I'm in Yungaburra.
which is 1 hour from Cairns. FNQ.

But if you go and ask your local butcher, they can give you a better deal than Coles/woolworths.

They can have it cut / packed to what you want.
just ask, and you will get a better deal.
