I know this might sound like a daft question but does 1 tablespoon of mixture = 20g in TMX31?
-
Not a daft question. .. tablespoons cause much confusion! In Australia a tbspn is 20 ml, in US it's 15 ml. The weight, I imagine, would vary depending on the density of the ingredient. Water should be the same for mls and gm. Hope this helps.

I can tell you for sure that 1 tbsp = 20g if you're measuring olive oil, if that helps. (Good question!)

1 tablespoon of honey = 30g
or golden syrup and treacle = 25g
so yes dependant upon what you are measuring. I tend to have a running list of regular ingredients that I use ;)
Also as Lellyj said Aus is 20ml where as in the US and UK and I think also NZ are 15ml

Me too.
Its interesting to know where the recipe is originating from because then I know whether to use my Aus teaspoon and tablespoon measurements or my UK. In the big picture I don't suppose it makes a lot of difference as a lot of people don't measure accurately, and go by 'the eye'

would make a difference in this house if I was making a curry CP :o :o :o ;) ;)
I am very aware when I am cooking from the Indian book that it is 15ml tablespoons :)

Yes, you definitely have to be careful with those devious curry ingredients - except for cumin, which I love, I always go for slightly less with the likes of chilli, etc. I have always worked on a "keep my fingers crossed" basis and it generally seems to work, but I very rarely do any cooking, or baking for that matter, where the exact measurement is crucial so I can get away with being a bit more relaxed with quantities / weights.

Thank you all so much, that does help. I guess I'll just stick with 15-20g depending what it is.
I usually just use an Australian tablespoon that I've got rather than weigh the actual amount but that is when i've noticed sometimes that it is more /less than 20g.
Hopefully in most recipes it won't make much of a difference.

I've noticed that a lot of the kitchen shops stock spoon sets that have the tablespoon as 15ml. It makes me cross as our Aust one is 20ml. I did buy a set to use when I'm doing UK recipes though.

I grumble when they don't actually show the measurements at all! I won't buy them unless the spoons are marked with measurements.
