Title: eBay - am i missing something?
Post by: Wonder on August 25, 2011, 06:18:13 am
I'm not sure if my link will work but there is a Thermomix Everyday cooking for every family cookbook on sale with a current bid of AU$152.50 and AU$6.50 postage - A$159 for a book available from Thermomix for $30 plus $9 postage. Am I missing something?

There is also a Thermoserve for sale for $260. Wow that is crazy.

The word cookbook should be mentioned way before it is (right down the bottom) - I'm sure people think it is a TMX.

:o WoW....it's at $305.00 now!  and 17 hours left to go.
I know it's unethical to email the bidders, but I really am considering contacting the seller  :-\

O.k.....it got the better of me.
I contacted the seller saying:

Hi, I can't help but gulp at the price your cook book is reaching. All the power to you, but I really believe people think they are bidding on an actual thermomix, and not just a cook book.
Maybe you would consider to make it CLEAR in your title that it's actually a cook book for sale.
I know I would be irate if I paid that amount for just a cook book.
Up to you.

Good on you Maddy, That is just a ridiculous amount for a cook book. I really do think people are confused about what they are bidding for

I have also sent a message to the seller. The more messages they receive the more likely they will remove the listing so Hopefully they will have morals and remove the listing.

Hmmm......smells fishy to me now.
The leading bidder (who has only 10 feedbacks), has 100% dealings with that particular seller.
Usually a good sign of price bumping from another computer/ebay name,  or friend.

I have also reported the listing with a misleading title. Hopefully they stop it soon

It's called "Shill Bidding" and eBay take a very dim view of it.

I can see it can be confusing from the picture and title however the description clearly states it's a book.

This person seems to be an employee of Thermomix as they have sold a lot of TMX books in the last month at least and seem to be making more money this way and without the effort of demos etc.

I think it's the responsibility of the buyer to read carefully and I can't believe how much some people pay.

I have also filed a report on this item due to misleading title. It will be interesting to see what happens however I still believe the buyer should read more carefully.

Does anyone know how the auction ended up? I'm assuming it's finished as I can't see it anymore although I'm on my iPad and can't remember my log in so can't view completed auctions.

The auction is still going. It's at $305 with 14 hours to go.

Seems that quite a few of those bidders have a substantial bidding history with the seller.

*shakes head* Some people.

If they are a current consultant then they can be struck off as a consultant. We aren't allowed to sell anything through eBay! It is possible they have finished up and are selling off stock??

If its a consultant I am sure some customers might like tomurchase some of the items for sale.

No reply to my email.

i too emailed the seller
this is her reply

I too was stunned that people were bidding so highly for this item. I also received a couple of other messages from people last night, and when I had a closer look at the wording in the title of the item, it has obviously been taken to mean an entire machine, not just the cookbook. I am unable to revise or end the sale as it has less than 12 hours to go. When the item ends I will be contacting the highest bidder and withdrawing the item for sale.
I in no way meant to be misleading, and thank you for you concern.

Great outcome, I also received the same email.  Thanks maddy for spurring us on to do something to stop that poor person getting ripped off.

Yep, got the same email.
Particularly good that the seller will be doing that, as it now sits at $455.00!  :o

Your absolutely right there tasty.  It did state it was a cookbook, and luckily for that bidder, the seller has a conscience.
People do need to read descriptions thoroughly, but I'm sure the seller will now have clearer listings for future.

it is a crazy price !

but im going to go against the grain here and say that i think the listing clearly states that the listing is for the cookbook !!!

and im sorry but if u are bidding that kind of money and not reading listings propperly for what your bidding on it cant be made the resposibility of the seller !

well the cook book sold for $511.00 !

What I did find interesting is that the bidding increments were set at $10.00.....bit cheeky for a cookbook me thinks  :-\

You know there's another of the same cookbook listed for $150 at the Buy It Now price.  Item number: 290603161603
This person must have seen the othe auction and decided to quit their day job!

Post by: Tasty on August 26, 2011, 04:17:41 am
Interesting and the same title too. Did you read the description - Don't pay ridiculous prices make me a reasonable offer today. Ummm, isn't $150 a ridiculous price?!

How much does it cost to buy one of these by the way?
Title: Re: eBay - am i missing something?
Post by: Vivaroo on August 26, 2011, 04:24:02 am
$30 I think.  I sent the seller a message asking why a $30 cookbook is listed for $150.
To me it's clearly a book, but true the title does not mention book.  But if you were buying a TMX, wouldn't you read all the details very carefully?  I'd like a holiday, might sell my EDC!!

It seems very strange that a Buy it now entry went up while this auction was going on with the same picture and description. A shame the birders aren't part of this forum

Its sold for over $500 !!!

The buyer has 100% bidding history with that seller so the buyer will either be a friend bidding it up or one very disappointed person when the book turns up without a machine attached !!

Cheeky - I think I could think of a few other words!!  They list the books with as little info as possible, set it so no-one can see the questions other "ebayers" have asked etc.  Its the same people listing these items over and over again, so to have that much Thermomix stock I think they are either consultants or former consultants (and if they are consultants they know exactly how much these books are worth and that they can be bought direct from Thermomix at the normal price).  EDC for $150.00 or $511.00!  Thermoserver for $260.00??  Profiteering for sure   :(

But I do agree with the other comments - buyer beware!

there is a warning on the french site about any vorwerk item on ebay and alot of them being fraudulent..if I remember think someone said the same exists on other vorwerk/thermomix websites...there have been alot of instances apparently where people pay stupid prices but dont get any item but some people are stupid too and easy to con...they really need to learn to do a bit of research!

Looks like the second book has sold - someone put in an offer of $58.50 and they buyer accepted. At least it was nowhere near the original $150 they were asking for.

I think part of this whole buying on Ebay is that people are gambling on getting "something for nothing" and they can't resist that, they think that they are getting a GENUINE bargain - although in this case it sounds as if it was a real set up to hike prices as high as possible and this practice is certainly well known in the world of auctions at large.

I have only ever purchased one item from Ebay, but I know several people who have been ripped off several times, yet they keep going back again and again and again.  If that happened in our shop, you may be sure they would think twice about ever coming back to us, yet they blindly shop on Ebay.  It's just the human psyche - and I simply don't understand it.  Perhaps they get caught up in the excitement of watching the bidding and don't fully realise the value of the item they are chasing.
