Playdough Recipe in "Everyday Cooking"
The recipe in the book is so easy and produced playdough with an incredibly smooth texture. The batch size was fine for my kids, but I needed to make 3 lots for our playgroup. This wasn't a problem though. I also added the colouring with the flour so I didn't have to knead it in afterwards.
Happy cooking,
Karen3 in Canberra

hi karen!
-
Thanks K3 - how is demonstrating??
-
I found that 20g oil was too much and next time I'll try 15g.
I have a pic up at my blog: http://failsafethermomix.blogspot.com/2009/05/play-dough.html - it is of two batches.

They look great = I will have to make some for the new grandson. Suddenly this thread is of value to me - LOL , not just for me to play with of course. ;) ;) ;) ;) hehehehehe
-
The added bonus is that DW will be pleased too and can say 'look at him, look at him' ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
LOL - so know I'm number 3 :o :o, should have enjoyed it while it lasted.
-
Thanks thermomixer for posting photo!

Hi Everyone,
Great photo! It must be time I made another batch of playdough. Hope everyone is well, we haven't dropped off the planet, just been busy. We've also been FAILSAFE for 3 weeks so haven't been doing anything adventurous. Thank goodness for the TM31 or I would have gone balmy with all the extra cooking. I'm off to check out Ralo's blog.

how is it going karen?
should we have a failsafe chat thread in our chit chat board?
-
Hi Brazen,
All is well. We're now up to doing some challenges on the diet. It hasn't been the miracle cure for some of the challenging behaviours that I was hoping for, however, it has helped me! I'm feeling a lot more calmer. A failsafe thread would be great. I could let the other failsafers know about it too. I'm a techno gumby and have no idea how to start these things.
Thanks,
Karen
-
will start one now :)
-
LOL I was thinking all these 'failsafe recipes' were for people like me who wanted something that was fail -safe i.e. I couldn't stuff them up. oh dear :-[ :-[ :-[
I am feeling a little more enlightened now I've read this thread !!!
-
I have, after making 5 batches, perfected this to our liking.
I add food colouring at the start with the water, salt and tartar. I add 280g flour. After mixing in the flour, no need to wait for it to cool - just add 15ml oil and knead 1 min max.
Beautiful stuff. ;D

Hi !
Where can I find the recipe for the playdough ? I am new in this forum and I have only a Germany Thermomix cook book where they do not have the playdough recipe. Thanks for your help and sharing! Jenny
-
Hi Jenny,
I have posted the recipe for you under the play dough recipe thread in the non food items category. There are some discussion topics before it, so just scroll down.
Have fun with it ;D

Welcome Jenny :-* :-*

I was thinking about playdough last night, when putting abandoned stock back onto the shelf at work.
-
You are never too old for a batch of playdough Thermoteen - go for it ;) ;)

I know, but it has to be REAL playdough, not the fake play doh in the Coles toy aisle (Aisle 8 in Gungahlin)
-
I've made this playdough three times already, but everytime it is a crumbly mess and SUPER oily. If I trow the crumbs on the benchtop and knead it, it becomes a really nice playdough. I'd like to avoid the manual kneading part, what am I doing wrong? ???

Hmmm not sure Tanya, this is almost a weekly thing in our house and it works every time - I do know if the kids leave it out and it starts to dry out I can re knead it back to smooth, so I think I know the consistency you are talking about. Are you making the recipe that is on the forum here as I think that has been tweaked...it is the one that I use. You can find it here

Hope this helps!

I made this yesterday for my kids after doing a series of "throw it all in and mix recipes" and anyway I was distracted by kids and hence threw it all in and then I realised that I didn't do it step by step (but it was too late, so I decided to try it anyway). After I realised I cooked it for 5 minutes as it said and then mixed up on speed 6 for a few seconds to help get it off the sides and then kneaded it a little longer than it says in the book. Anyway it turned out ! So I say chuck it all in lol.
Kids loved it. It was very, very smooth and I just turned it out on the bench, split in 2 and then kneaded the colours into each.
-
Love "chuck it all in" recipes for anything. :-* :-* :-*
-
Made mine last week and is the best playdough ever!! :)
-
Did you "chuck it all in" Jennifer ? Have you tried to make it the step by step way before at all ? I'd be interested if you thought it turned out any differently ? I still have the same batch in the fridge, so it's keeping quite well and the kids play with it a fair bit.
-
I made some up yesterday and I was rather impressed. I did follow the EDC and not chuck it all in. It was all crumbly in the bowl but came together so quickly on the bench.

I made mine to how it says in the book - it turned out a bit crumbly to begin with but kneaded together quite well.
-
i made this today for the first time, mine was crumbly too but yes kneaded very easily on the bench, i was too havy handed with the oil so it was ridiculously greasy so just added more flower. 2nd batch was perfect and also didnt wait for it to cool down this time. nicky

Thought I'd 'bump' this review. I follow the EDC and it is crumbly to start with but found that it comes together easily on the bench. My kids love it. I haven't tried colouring in the TM bowl I'm worried about staining it! Forgot to put gloves on so I had red hands for the last few days...
-
definitely won't stain your bowl HC ;)

I was just going to write the same thing!!
-
It's been a while since I made this recipe and I haven't got my EDC with me - does this playdough have a 'shelf life'?
-
Yes but not sure how long. Our playdough activities tend to be quite sporadic. Gets a lot of use then sits in the fridge for ages... Reason for this new batch: last one was going mouldy!!
-
:) i made this again last week for the kids.
lasts about 1 month in the fridge, or it goes mouldy.
heaps faster and cheaper though bought play dough.
Robyn :D

Oh golly I love this stuff!!
I use the recipe with 280gms flour, 15gm oil. I add the color in with the water at the start. And don't let it cool between stages.
This is honestly the BEST playdough around, I love that it takes about 2 minutes of my time, and max 10 before it's on the table ready for play.
I think I may have saved myself a small fortune on playdough just with thermy :D We make up 2 batches a week at them moment with this wintery weather!
Wrapped up in clingfilm, lasts for weeks!
-
I made some today and didn't have plain flour so used bakers flour ir is beautiful and flexible!!
-
I hate Play dough >:(, Its messy horrible stuff :P. But the kids love it ;D. I guess I will have to try this sooner or later ???. Grrr. I wish the TM couldn't make play dough :-\.
-
Dede you meany
-
yeah she is -- look at her picture! :D (jus jokin' :-*)
-
lol. I know I am. ;D
-
:D Dede, I did, until I restricted playdough use to the kitchen table. Now, it is much easier to handle!
-
Playdough is the lesser of two evils... sand is what I really hate. Offer playdough to keep them out of the sand pit I say!!!
Trick is to let it dry and then vacuum up!!!
-
Dede, you may well hear me change my tune. It has been a while since we had play dough but we are almost approved to be foster carers opting for 0-5 year old so perhaps I should keep my mouth shut for now.
-
Start practising then Denise - that is great news, good on you.
-
Perhaps I will be the one hating the play dough. It is exciting and nerve wracking but feel we are in a position to give it a go. DH and I are having a month in UK and Paris in Sep then we hope to start.
-
Bedlam, that is a wonderful and, I am sure, challenging future you are planning (after your equally wonderful holiday, of course). Good luck with your fostering. You have to be very special people to take on foster children, it is something I could never tackle. Well done and good luck (and keep practicing the play dough)!
-
That is fantastic news Denise. Well done! There are just so many children out there needing a loving home. There will no doubt be challenges (we have faced many through our adoption), but it is really worthwhile. Enjoy your time away. ;D
-
Does anyone else have a problem with kneading the playdough? I thought my tmx was broken because nothing happened when I pressed the knead button but it seems it was just dough caught under the blades. I had to mix on a high speed and then just tip out and knead together on the bench.
-
I have never really had a problem with it. I use bakers flour now which makes a lovely elastic playdough ;)
