Title: ENO?
Post by: Sassafrass on August 06, 2011, 09:02:09 am
Hi anyone who can help or who reads this,
I'm looking at the Rice Flower Steamed Cakes  p85 from A Taste of Asia.
under the heading of (C) it calls for 2 tsp of ENO ?????? What is this, and does anyone know what you can use as a substitute if this is a hard to find item?  These cakes look great but unsure of the ingredient
 Sassafrass ???

Eno is a fruit salt.I can remember my Mum drinking the stuff years ago as a health benefit for an upset stomach.I can buy it here in the UK in an Asian grocery store as they use it in their cookery as well.Hope this helps you Sassafrass :)

Isn`t that like salvital???  It`s a fizzy drink that you have for indigestion.  I have seen it used in a few recipes before.

I'm not sure what ENO is unless its a typo and meant to be EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil). I do not have the book to have a look either. Hopefully someone else can help you.

Intrepidtrier is right, Click Here (http://www.gsk.com.au/products_consumer-healthcare-products_product-listing.aspx?view=38) for more info. Apparently Eno contains sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate and citric anhydrous.

Thanks for all your help.  I had no idea of what it might be, but I think something that fizzes up (like salvital) makes sense as it's used along with double acting baking powder, just before dividing mixture into amounts (maybe it helps with the rising of cakes??).  Anyway I'll go ask a health food store.

You can generally buy it in Coles and Woolies here in Oz and definitely the chemist - not sure about the health food shops  ;)

It has a green label here in Oz, will see if I can manage to upload a photos as I downloaded a resizer app the other day  ;)

all I ever remember about that stuff is my dad making up a glass every night and burping (thank goodness he doesn't have a computer to read this)

I know that we had this discussion on the forum just after the recipe book was released and it definately isn't a typo. Good luck finding the ENO's. Think it's usually in the aisle with the vitamins/headache tablets, etc.

A great big thank you to all.
You have really helped and I'm off to Coles to buy the green bottle (loved the pic - it has helped a lot).  Now all I have to do is actually make the Rice Flower Cakes.  I'll let you know how they go.
Thanks Again Sassafrass  :D
