Now I have started making lot of bread, yes I am really enjoying it now.
I was wondering if I needed a bread mat. What do you all use it for?
My bread rises nicely by the fire at the moment.
Thanks

I don't have one Hally and I cope quite OK. I have a silicon mat (not as big as the TMX bread mat) that I usually plop my dough on to work with when forming the rolls but the first rise is usually done in the TM bowl and the second rise on the lined tray or in the bread tin on so I have had no need for one up to now.
-
I make bread often and don't have a bread mat. I haven't bought one up until now as I was given an old style mat and rolling pin from the mother of a very dear friend after she passed away. My friend doesn't bake much so thought I would like it as her mother and I used to talk cooking often. Just can't seem to give it up because of the sentimental attachment.

Thanks guys I will hold off. I would love a 2nd jug.

Hi Hally , I have a bread mat and love it. But choice between a second mat and a second jug, jug wins hands down. You can improvise for a mat but not a jug.
-
Hally, I'm with the others - virtually all my bread rises in the jug for the first rising, then I work with it on my old Tupperware pastry sheet, and 2nd rise happens on the tray/in the bread tin. I'm seriously thinking about that 2nd jug though ...
-
I have a bread mat Hally and I really love it. Most doughs don't need any extra flour using that. The only thing I don't like about it is that I can't cut on it.
-
I have a bread mat and love it you can purchase cheaper silicon mats though keep an eye out. I am so pleased I purchased the 2nd jug I think it enhances my investment and use them both everyday.
-
I could do with another jug now. I have a Cobb loaf in the jug on my first rise.
Thanks for all the replies.
I wil buy a cheaper one, it's to stop the flour going everywhere, I am rather messy :-\

I love the TMX Bread Mat, not for bread, but for pastry. It's nice and heavy and sits on the bench without slipping around.
Don't know what I did without it - yes I do, I made a hell of a lot of mess!
-
Mmm I am messssyyyy
>:(

Can't say I need the mat but that 2nd jug is a must. I don't know how I did without it now that I have one.
-
I have the bread mat and love it, saves me a lot of cleaning up. I too would love a 2nd jug, its on the list of things I need/want.
-
I am very very messy.... So I think I need both. Our accountant will have our tax done this month, so maybe I can twist dh's arm for both. :)(http://

I've got both the old and the new one. I like how flexible the new one is and find the measurements on the side very useful when rollng out pastry or dough to a certain size. Is a mat necessary...no, but its just a nice accessory to have. The 2nd jug would probably get more use, but isn't that $400 compared to $60 mat?
-
Yes the jug is $400, so I could order the jug and somehow end up buying the mat too*?!*** will see what DH says. If I keep making fabulous bread I think he will say yes. He doesn't like flour on the floor

(or buy the jug and say you won the mat...)
-
I say if you can afford it do it and get both. They are great quality.

(or buy the jug and say you won the mat...)
Now who does that remind you of CP :D :D - Our newcomers wouldn't know Bron like us early members do, she was always saying she had won something when in fact she had bought it.
-
I wondered why cp said you won it!?!? Makes sense now.
:D
I normally mumble, gosh I got confused, didn't realize I spent so much, mm try not to do that again.
So far that has worked for me.LOL
I have spent a lot recently for the kitchen, so will see how I can juggle both.

I think the concept of winning something is so funny! I haven't used it yet, but I am saving it for future use one day ;D
-
Another reason i think i should buy the breadmatt, i have flour everywhete, i look like a snowman from tummy down, and the snow has certainly fallen on our kitchen floor!
Also it sticks to the bench with the pastry or dough and its hard to get off.
Oh the joys of baking ;D

I have bought one, waiting for tax return for jug and blades.
Used it today to roll out Maddys cheese and bacon rolls, i didnt need any exrra flour so there was no mess and no sticky dough on the bench. Love it already.
I says it can go in the oven up to 280 degrees, anyone put it in the oven.
Thanks

I haven't put mine in the oven but know others that have. They work well, the only thing is they do discolour a little when you cook on them
-
I think i might keep it looking pristine for now :)
-
I've only seen it used in an oven for wrapping bread during the first rise. Faffa are you saying that people actually use it to bake on - like baking paper, etc?
-
That's right Twitterpated up to 280o - I do think only in an electric oven though - I can't remember as I only have an electric oven :D
-
Yes the instructions say electric oven NO GAS OR HOT PLATE
On the frist bread ris can yiu wrap the dough up in it to free up the jug
Hally
-
I never do my rise in the jug any way but it does sound like a great idea. Still not sure on the using it to cook on though. A little expensive for it to all go wrong.
-
i haven't put my in the oven yet. I probably would tho if I had a lovely big big chefs flat tray to put them on without overlapping
-
I had one that I lined my oven with, worked a treat. In the end it was quite grotty looking but my oven stayed nice
-
Will this be the next purchase we see on the shopping thread CP63?
-

Hally
Yes wrap it up in the mat Hally like fish and chips lol

Thank you
H :)
