Title: Steamer basket damaged by the blades! Has anyone seen this?
Post by: Peleep on July 13, 2011, 12:45:28 pm
Hi Everyone

2 months after owning the Thermomix... I've put on several kgs in weight, and have made numerous recipes!

On the weekend, I noticed some small 2mm nicks/cuts at the bottom of the steam basket, on the outer edges. Upon closer inspection, it is clear that the top of the blade is hitting the bottom outer edge of the steamer basket, causing these nicks/cuts.  This would also make sense of why I've also noticed the basket rotating by itself in the bowl whilst cooking!

I was making the butter chicken recipe with the sauce cooking in the bowl, and i had the chicken meat in the steam basket to cook it, preventing the chicking from getting chopped in the stirring motion/or blades getting caught by the meat.  It tasted GREAT by the way!

I suspect the metal bowl expands when hot, and therefore the steamer basket slides down slightly, and therefore touching the blade and therefore the cuts.

I don't think it's anything major per se, apart from causing little cuts, and potentially having little grey coloured plastic chips in my meal!

Has anyone else experienced this?  Is there a solution of some kind as I'm concerned that potentially more and more of it will be nicked/cut off over time?

Phil.

Can't say I've ever had that problem, my bowl seems high enough to not go anywhere near the blades.

My steamer basket spins depending on how much liquid is in the bowl, it spins with the water, if that makes sense?

Hopefully someone else might have experienced this.

Just looked mine and there is no chance the knifes can touch the basket. It stays in place resting on the metallic bulbs in the jug.
Im very sure that the amount of expansion the jug does during heating would be so little that it shouldnt change anything.

Maybe your knife blade has been bend. No one of the blades should reach higher then the center knob of the blades.
Maybe invest in a new basket(5.30€) or have your consultant have a look at it and see if its the jug, knifes or basket which is causing the problem.

Gosh I haven't heard of this before.  Are you sure that your basket hasn't been damaged in some other way?  Perhaps in the dishwasher?  :)

I agree with everyone else as there is no way the basket and blades are anywhere near each other at any time. This sounds very strange.

I would contact your consultant and chat to them about it. I have never heard of it and can't see how the blades would be able to touch the bottom of the basket as mentioned by bluesed the indents at the top of the bowl stop the basket from going any further.

I have this same problem

I'm very glad i'm not the only person with this problem.  Thanks for your pics.  My pics are now uploaded here. Very similar cuts to yours, and teh blade appears to be entirely normal.

Have you had the problem for long? any tips?

Phil.

Well that is strange. you basket must slip down and touch the blades. How long have you (bigTcup) had your TM? I am just wondering if its a bad batch of baskets with a slightly different material that doesn't fit as well in the TM. Just a thought.

I have had mine for just over a year now - should advise HO but am super busy doing demos  ;) & it doesn't really affect anything.  Perhaps at the end of this busy month I will let HO know and perhaps get a new basket under warranty.  As a customer I would definitely let HO know and ask for a new basket.

Many thanks bigTCup.

Have you had the problem for long? does it get worse?

And yes - i notified the UK headoffice yesterday and am awaiting a response.

I don't think mine has got any worse - when I am making rice I can hear the blades just hitting the basket but I dont think the problem is actually getting worse - I really should do something about it  :-))

You are in Perth bTc so you should be able to get it seen to fairly easily.  I'd be worried it is doing damage to the blades.

ok people that is NOT normal...sounds like a defect in either the basket or blades...i would be contacting head office immediately and get them to check it out...with this quality of machine that sort of thing should not be happening but those of you who have worked in manufacturing of anything would know that these things happen...id be getting it looked at straight away as the bowl and blades should not be touching at all!

Thanks everyone for your comments.

Thermomix UK informed. A replacement basket is on its way.  Hopefully it's just a fault with the basket.

Otherwise, it will be the bowl and/or the blade. Will find out soon... and update you.

if your TMX is still under warranty, you should be able to get a replacement basket....

I am glad someone bumped this thread. I have noticed that if you don't put the basket in the bowl with the lips facing in the same direction then the basket does dip down and the blade does hit it. My suggestion is to always put the basket in as described.
