Title: What do you store your icecream in?
Post by: djinni373 on July 12, 2011, 02:17:10 am
All this yummy home made icecream has had an unexpected consequence.

Apparently 10 minutes is too long to wait when you need an icecream fix  :-)) and plastic containers are being broken by icecream scoops wielded by starving teens (the latest broken container had a hole surrounded by a very impressive star crack in its side).

So I looking for good quality plastic freezerware that can take some knocks.  ;D I'm thinking maybe Tupperware freezer stuff? Any suggestions or recommendations?

Thanks :)

I use tupperware containers to freeze ice cream in.

I use either Decor containers from the supermarket, or else recycle icecream containers from pre-TMX days when we used to buy icecream.

I have some of the tupperware freezer containers, the larger one would make a good ice cream container!

I generally use recycled bulla ice cream containers, doesn't matter if they end their life then  :D

I use either Decor of the Klip it ones. I'm not sure how they would stand up to hungry teenagers though.

I just brought the Decor 1.8 liter containers from the supermarket to store mine in. I brought 3 so I could keep 3 different flavors of ice cream in the freezer at a time, but I cant even keep one in there as the kids keep eating it. I think I will have to make some and hide it.

I'm happy with the Decor one I use. It's a 2L one with the red pop top on the lid. Reminds me, I must make some more...

Thank you all so much.  :)

I thought maybe it was just me with this problem  :P  as I had been using the same containers as you (except tupperware & thermoserver). So I did a bit of (other) forum stalking and it turns out I'm not the only one. Whew  ;D   Also 10 Tips for homemade icecream success (http://sweets.seriouseats.com/2008/06/10-ten-tips-for-making-homemade-ice-cream-success.html) was interesting reading. Apparently shallow, flat containers are the best for storing icecream. So I might give that a try. It should be difficult to break the side of a container when there isn't much of a side. :D

I don't know what happened to my post. I must have done something to it. Anyway, I was saying that i bought a set of 3 flat boxes of no particular make. They are 0.75 litre's which is just right for the Cuisinart recipes bowls and leave no space for ice crystals to form and therefore do not waste freezer space either. i also bought a plunger style contraption which extracts a plug of ice cream made by Cuisinpro.

Is this  (http://www.makedesignedobjects.com/?c1=BRAND&c2=Cuisipro&c3=CUI006) what you mean Dot in regard to that plunger type thing?

Yes, thats the one Judy. The downside is that like cookie cutters, you get left with the bits inbetween. A square shape would have been better.

what is that plunger used for? I couldn't quite work it out - do you push the thing into the icecream or do you suck up the icecream like a hyperdermic? I'm just not sure... :-\

You pull up the plunger which turns the metal bit at the bottom into an empty cylinder. You press this into the ice cream which results in a plug of ice cream being inside. It does not suck up. . Withdraw the "thingy" and now, place the "thingy" onto your serving dish. Push the oval button at the top and push down which releases your little plug of ice cream measuring 2.5 inches D x 2.5 inches Diameter. You can add different colours on top of one another but mine always turn out like the leaning tower of Piza since one of the flavours starts to melt uneavenly before I get chance to deal it the coup de gras.  :-)) :-))
