Title: A few nasty words about the Thermomix.
Post by: LeeJ on May 18, 2011, 11:19:35 am
http://www.woogsworld.com/2011/05/sounds-hideous-i-will-see-you-there-x.html

The forum even got a mention  ;)

I am defiantly the wife, who thinks whole foods are a definite for her kids. Where preservatives and additives are banned (when you follow something as out there as 'Failsafe', there isn't much choice); while I am still gaining the full potential from my machine, it is an investment I'm glad I made :)

Most people think like that when they first hear the price of the TMX, some are soon converted if they actually go to a demo but some people will never see the sense in it - those type of people on that site are not the type of people we want on our forum to drag it down.  Was an interesting read though LeeJ and at times even funny.

I suppose I thought so too Judy, it was when I was thinking about investing in a KitchenAid that I decided to weigh up the pro's and con's.

I can still get much much more out of thermie yet  :D

I suppose if you have no interest in food, then it would seem a bit silly ;)

I can understand people being put off by the price - we bought ours a couple years ago with the bonuses that the government gave us - so it was a bonus. But then I realised we are SO busy in the evenings (kids have commitments every school night) that we were buying takeaway every week. We're a family of 5 - it was costing approx $30 to get something that wasn't too deep fried! That's $1560 a year!!!!   :o

Then there's all the other savings - using up bits in the fridge as a minestrone instead of chucking out - making your own bread - etc.. etc...

I am one of only a couple people I know to own a machine - I've found most people think they'd be a great idea except then they say stuff like - yeh - but I'd still have to cook! They don't care about all the nutritional benefits and think if you want to eat whole foods you're queer!

Ahh well - our little secret I suppose!

Have to say it did make me laugh.

But as a North Shore mum I think I'm the only person in our school to own one, though my friend is in the middle of ordering.
But maybe it's a bit slower to take off in the upper north shore - further to travel, lol , :-)

Not read the comments yet.
But if you are happy with store bought and no interest in making things yourself I guess it would seem silly to buy one.
Would like to know how you can get 2 weeks in Italy for under $2000 though, maybe you don't take the kids?? Hey I just want a couple of weeks in London sans family and can't afford that.

We saved the price of the tmx in well under a year. And I thought we rarely bought packaged food and we don't do takeaways any differently (ie very rarely, lol). If anything we eat out more as the kids are that bit older.

Zan, I had wondered what sort of deal got you 2 weeks in Italy for $2k,  :D

Dh thinks it's worth the money for smooth mashed spuds ;) He can't stand my lumpy mash  :o

Oh too funny!.

I'm the only real life person I know that has one but I also don't know anyone as interested in food and cooking than me.  I'm still not convinced its saved us money but with three growing boys who've now started to eat A LOT its difficult to say.  It wasn't about saving money for me when i bought it, it was about having the ability to throw together a nutritious meal from raw ingredients, that might actually be eaten ....  ;D

DH thinks its worth it just for the vindaloo I can make in it!  ;D

Some people clean, others cook.  Cleaning, I'm not so good at ....

Haha yes dont know either what trip to italy costs 2000...maybe if u travel alone and stay with friends!!  As for thé Anti thx comments well for sûre if u dont cook and dont like to then its not for u... And yes its expensive but for me worth every penny!  Saying that everyone is entitled to their opinion ... Only thing i find totally wrong is referring to owners being snobby housewives... Couldnt be further from thé truth...everyone i know who has one havé all sorts of différent incomes and lifestyles and none of them are snobs  :)

That was actually quite funny and the puffer vests cracked me up and I know I wont be able to look at the rich school mums who wear them without having a little chuckle  ;)

I actually felt the same when I first heard about TMX, but once you see it in action and do your homework, well.........

Oh and I do have a kitchen aid, bought one years ago before everyone had to have one, because my Kenwood died and the KA seemed like a great replacement, which it is and I certainly won't be getting rid of my KA  :)

Me too.  :-[ I'm glad we are so much more civilized here.  :D ;) I hadn't realized it was such a status symbol!! All my customers certainly don't fit into that stereotype - most a struggling pensioners that could see the value in cutting food costs and healthcare by cooking real food but not taking all day to do it.  :)

I have read most of the thread not all of it - unbelievable, some of the comments they were making is absurd as they don't even own one! I did laugh at some of the comments - also I didn't like all the swearing, not necessary.

The price was an issue with us, yes its a lot of money, but once bought you start to reap the health and financial rewards.

it frustrates me how people can be so negative about something they really dont know much about and its only because of the price... would they sneer at a $2000 tv or computer or something like that? they just think all this talk of healthy foods and additive free cooking is a load of rubbish, let them believe wat they want, i know the difference my tm has made for this family...

The cost of mine was $1200 back in the 80s my family and friends would say I was mad to spend all of that money . I still have it!!!!

I'm sure a couple of those people have attended my demos  :-X :D

As mentioned by em, I too am sometimes a bit surprised to hear such negativity about the price when (a) some haven't even seen it being demonstrated and (b) - and this is the biggie - some people think absolutely nothing of spending that same amount of money on golf clubs / flat screen TV / computers & accessories etc..

Plus - as fundj said, microwaves used to be considered an "unnecessary luxury" & now I'd say most homes in Australia have them... What about when food processors first appeared!? Same thing - now they're in every household (except the ones with a TMX!!)  ;)

I'm on my high horse, but it just amazes me that a lot of people think nothing of spending hundreds of dollars every week on take-away & eating out and buying pre-packaged, preservative-packed rubbish they term "food".... yet balk at spending (albeit a lot of) money on something that is so good for them. What happened to the importance of our & our children's health people!?

<sheepishly climbing down off horse.. Tantrum over>  :-[

WOW, who would have thought this country chick would be 'compared' to a North Shore Mummy.   Hehehehe the north shore mummies would be horrified.

Could someone please book me that holiday to Italy for under $2000, I haven't got time to book it I am to busy making icing sugar.  hehehehhe

Really is to funny!!!!!!

Hey, I know all about the "microwave controversy"  because my first one was an Amana Radarange, purchased in 1968 for $500.00, when you could buy a Ford Falcon for $2250.00!

People thought I was a nut case but even then I was an appliance junkie and my then husband was very indulgent and enjoyed my cooking.  (He was a body-builder and I didn't complain about the $$$ he spent on weights and exercise equipment.)

I haven't done Italy, but when I have travelled which admittedly has only been within Australia I always get the feeling on return of 'oh dear spent a lot of money and now what do I have to show for it' and I am sure that is how I would feel if I spent $2000 on a holiday.  Don't get me wrong one day I do want to travel to Europe but at the moment, cooking for my family and friends is a much higher priority and my TMX allows me to do this  :)

Hi

I am the author of the blog www.woogsworld.com which is a personal blog written by myself.  I am sorry I have upset some people regarding my post about the Thermomix. It certainly was not my intention.  I think it is a wonderful invention and see the benefits in owning one.

I write about my personal day to day experiences and would never set out to offend anyone. (Except maybe for bigots, racists and homophobes.)

Kind Regards

That reminds me of the comment about people taking the TMX on holiday with them.  How many people could manage a holiday with no TV (yes I could).  I will admit to being inseparable from my iphone and my laptop - they always come on holiday with us, but I haven't convinced dh that I can take the TMX yet - he claims its too heavy.

A friend of mine really balked when I told her the price of it and yet her and her dh have a motorboat ....  For me, cooking is one of my hobbies, hobbies cost money.  I also get a great deal of pleasure from giving my family good quality food that I've made myself.  A few years ago I grew strawberries - had a bumper crop.  Sadly I didn't know how to make jam at the time so we just ate them all but I get a huge kick out of making a dish from food that I've grown myself - now THAT's traceability :)

I also had took no offence to your blog.  I found it quite amusing and although not being a north shore mum, you've talked me into getting a padded vest.   :D

The cutting coke thing is a little scary to be honest.  Now I know why my 14yo son wanted me to buy it.  And here I was thinking it was for the mango sorbet.

It's a shame so many bogans chose to comment on your thread and bring it down to their level.

Unfortunately $2000 wouldn't get us much of a holiday when you have to pay for 5 people.  That is,  more than one hotel room per night for us.   :-)) I use the same justification as you for deciding whether or not to get a Thermomix.  I'd much rather something that helps me out, keeps us healthy and saves us money than a long weekend on either the gold or sunny coast (couldn't afford airfares with the $2000 budget.)  It has paid for itself within the 12 months of having it.  We used to eat out at least once a week now we eat at home.

Twice a week my kids also take sushi to school.  Youngest has 1 piece, middle child has 2 and eldest takes 3 pieces.  If I was to buy it, it would cost me $15 twice a week.  Using the Thermomix and making the sushi rice in it.  I add everything set the timer and then have a shower whiles it's cooking. My kids then spread the rice on the nori add their own fillings and their lunch is done. This costs me no more than $2 twice a week.  So just on that It's paid for itself now.

my friend's MIL was so anti tm when she first saw it, but now, down the track, she's getting one. she loves cooking and has every gadget imaginable, and that was why she didn't want a tm. however, she was borrowing my friend's tm all the time and realised she wanted one, too - it obviously did more than the gadgets she had in her kitchen. these things happen, and sometimes, people have to eat their words. i'm glad she's getting a tm - she'll love it.

I will admit that I don't often tell people how much it cost. So many have made a judgement about us because of it, which is (like most judgements) made without all the information. We have 7 kids and little time and absolutely love the quality of the food we make. We saved to buy it and sacrificed other things to let the money go towards it. And... I cook so many things that I would never have attempted before because of the time and effort involved.
A friend of mine has just bought one - awaiting delivery - and before my recent demo (where I did buy the second bowl!) I asked DH whether he thought we got our money worth out of it. He agreed without hesitating. I couldn't justify promoting it to a friend and suggesting she spend that much money if I didn't feel it was so well worth it.

Just wasted the last while reading these comments, whoa what a sad lot. I can understand being dismissive of it as it is expensive (though more so over your neck of the woods) but to be rude about it or the type of people they assume uses it without at least having been to a demo / used it isn't on.

If you find it offensive you don't have to read it.

I have just read the blog and did find it funny, but as others have already said I thought some of the comments were pretty awful.  Yes, it IS expensive, but worth every penny.  We had to struggle to save up for the 50% deposit and pay off the rest over 6 months (you can pay over a longer period, but that is done through a finance company which = paying interest) but we are so delighted with it.

DD is doing her A' levels on the south coast and is living in shared student housing where you have to do your own cooking and basically she is living on junk.  She doesn't want to but doesn't seem to have the time to cook stuff from scratch because she is always cleaning up after the other students.  When I first told her that we had bought a TMX she was horrified at the price and told her father (my ex-husband) that I had wasted nearly £900 on a blender.  When she came home for half-term, she realised that it was more than an expensive blender.  Very surprisingly she told me last week that she wished she had a TMX as she is fed up with junk (which must be costing her, in other words me) a fortune.  I have since spoken to her father who is far better off than I am, (yet doesn't pay a penny towards her upkeep) and I suggested that he got her a TMX so that she can eat healthily.  Much to my complete shock, he said he would consider it :o  She is going to her father's for Christmas and between us we will work on him  ;D  Even DH is impressed with the TMX, even though he is too frightened to use it - but I have a 'training' plan in mind for him  ;)

I think it's all about what our passions and priorities are.
Someone into photography may well spend $2,000 on a camera or a wood work fanatic on a lathe.
My passion has always been cooking and the thermomix is my investment in my family's' health.

Definitely agree. I won't say what my DH has spent on his vintage cars, but it would buy many, many TMXes.
