Title: Whiskey for home made Baileys
Post by: Lovemythermo on April 17, 2011, 08:51:20 am
Thought I might try my hand at the Irish Liqueurs and home made Baileys that have been posted. When it states to use whiskey, is that scotch whiskey or bourbon whiskey? I'm not a whiskey lover on its own so I have no idea here!

Hi lovemythermo  - it's usually scotch whiskey that would be used in Baileys

*nods enthusiastically*

Scotch (or Irish if you want to be pedantic about it. ;))

Hi lovemythermo,
I agree with the others. Baileys is the only thing my son uses the TMX for. He uses Scotch.
Have fun.

Most people here use rye whiskey because it has less residual "flavor" than Bourbon or Scotch but has a spicy overtone that makes it ideal for making these liquor drinks.  Especially good in Kahula recipes because rye has a great affinity for chocolate and coffee.  It is also a favorite to use in punch recipes for the same reason.

Rock & Rye is a bottle of rye whiskey that contains one or more chunks of rock candy.

The Wild Turkey distillery makes both bourbon and rye and in certain parts of America the Wild Turkey Rye outsells the bourbon about three to one.  In the south it is the other way around, except in Arkansas, where things are always a little discombobulated. :D

I found this one below LMT from mama bel on this  (http://www.intuitiveparenting.com.au/showthread.php?16-Thermomix!!!/page50) website.

I like SM's Baileys recipe (I used 50% scotch and 50% irish whiskey as it's what I had here). But I prefer this Kahlua recipe, which I add to cola or milk or sip over ice.

Ingredients:
390g raw sugar
370g hot water
30g instant freeze-dried coffee
500g vodka
1 large vanilla bean

Method:
Grind sugar on speed 9 for 30 seconds. Add hot water and coffee. Mix on 100 degrees, speed 4 for 1 min 30 sec. Slice vanilla bean in half, lengthwise and then each half into quarters. Add vanilla pieces and vodka to TMX bowl. Heat at 60 degrees, speed 3 for 8 minutes.

Pour into a glass bottle and sit for 4 days. Strain and pour into same bottle (will need approx 2L size). Store in a cool, dark place. Enjoy!

I have never made any other alcoholic drinks in the TMX that I recall...

But have been using Oz Tops to turn plain juice into cider and wine! Only done 2 bottles, but I Like.

That sounds interesting Judy. I love cider. I actually have a bottle of apple liquer that I bought in SA last time we were there. I got it from Burra. I really must use it.
