Hi everyone, been lurking for a while and have decided to register and become a part of this great community!
As yet I do not own a Thermomix but hope to change that soon, just have to convince the husband that I will use it and that it is worth the money, which we all know it is but.......
Anyhow in the mean time I am printing off recipes that I want to try and saving my hard earned cash :P
-
Welcome knitter cook ;D I am a knitter too ;D
-
Hi knittercook, welcome to the forum. We love it when browsers come on in and meet us and especially those who are already printing off recipes before they even buy a TMX. Make sure you take your DH along to a demo, that usually does the trick for the guys and when you get it, leave it on the bench - they carry on like a cut chook if you shut them in a cupboard (the TMX that is, not the DH) ;) I used to be a knitter in an earlier life and it's lovely to see it popular with the younger ones again.
-
That's how I came by mine. DH came to the demo and was sold on it as well. I managed to get him to come by saying that the host's (friend) husband wanted to have a beer with him. Once he was there he had no alternative but to listen and look (and drink his beer). Bingo! I now have a TMX.
-
Hi and welcome to the forum Knittercook.I agree with the others, take your DH along to the demo and he will be blown away with what the TM can do and how good the food tastes. :)
-
I agree with the above - get him along to the demo.
I use my TM at least 3 times a day. I make 2 batches of bagels a week, which yield 7 bagels each time (total 14 bagels). On this alone I would probably save about $6 per week not buying plain rolls, and the difference for my kids saving on buying lunch is really conservative at $45 per week. Ok, simple maths is $45 x 42 = $1890 Machine has paid for itself in lunches alone ;)
42 = number of weeks in a year if you were lucky enough to have a few weeks holiday :D
-
Thanks everyone for the great advice and welcome :D
Judydawn I always feel like an intruder when on forums and not contributing, it almost feels like I am eavesdropping LOL!

Know how you feel knittercook but a lot of people are happy to browse anonymously - you only have to look at the number of visitors we get on here at any given time to see that. Sometimes there are more of them than us ;) ;)

when I REALLY REALLY wanted a TMX I showed my Hubby some Demos on youtube from Canada. I told him it was really expensive but that I wanted to save up for one. He asked how much it was and I told him to guess. Well he guessed $5000 so when I said it was just under 2 he was relieved. ;D ;D
-
That was lucky. When I ask people to guess they normally say $500-600. :)
-
No, my Husband knows what a Kitchenaid costs I I told mhim that was cheap so if I say a TMX is expensive he gets really scared. LOL
-
Hi and welcome knittercook. I hope you can convince your DH. With me it was my DH who wanted one more than me. (he loves the rice custard from it)
-
My Sister had a Thermomix before me, so to convince my Hubby my sister and myself invited him around for afternoon tea, we made several different things, and my hubby being a food lover was soon asking questions about this machine and was amazed by it.
I didn't say a thing I just left it to him, he started saying that he thought we needed one, but I just said no I don't think we do and that we could do without it and that it was too expensive. but he then said that we could get one cause it would soon pay for itself.
So I let him believe that he was the one who made the decision that we needed one and Bingo within a couple of weeks we had (MY) a thermomix. lol.
Sometimes you got to be a little tricky. Worked for me anyway.
-
You crafty devil dede, glad it worked and DH didn't realise he was having the wool pulled over his eyes ;D ;D
-
Welcome knittercook to the world of TMX and this amazing forum. All women need the psychology qualification after their name - good one dede! :)
-
Hi knittercook,
I finally got my tmx about 6weeks ago after saving for a long time .. My hubby still wasn't convinced but he is loving all the food I am cooking ... ;)
-
Hi Knittercook, A trick I used after the demo was saying things like 'It's too expensive, I am going to cancel the order' because i was feeling terribly guilty, while occasionally also saying 'It's a good thing I don't love expensive diamonds like most other women'. A combination of disagreeing with me out of habit, and possibly realizing that some women do buy ridiculously expensive stuff that is complete useless, resulted in him saying 'Just get it'. Me - 1, Hubby - 0. ;)
By the way this does not work too well if you do love diamonds !!!!
Hope it all works out for you.
-
Thanks you have given me some wicked ideas ;)
cgonsalv in our household we call diamond wearing and clothes shopaholic women, expensive to run LOL! Now I definately do not fit into this category so that is the ace up my sleeve, and the card that will be dealt when clinching the deal.
-
Good Luck Knittercook, I hope you convince your Hubby soon and get your Thermomix.

I just had to mention my Hubby's ridiculously large golf driver and his annual golf club membership and he didn't even try to put up a fight. ;) ;D

Does he use them as often as you use Thermie Chelsea??!! ;D
I was lucky enough to have DH tell me that I needed to find out more about the TMX as he was sure that we needed one - scored big brownie points with that one once I realised it's potential!
-
I just promised more home cooking, less take out, and a less cluttered kitchen. That sold my DH on my Thermie :)

:D Welcome to the forum.
When I bought mine 19 months ago, I saw a review on it, and just ordered it without a demo.

He would like too but isn't allowed. ;) ;D

Welcome to the forum.
You'll get it. You just need to be clever & there are lots of tips provided here (I love it!) ;D
It took me 3 weeks to convince my husband, even after he'd seen a demo. It got to be a sore point, but I got it in the end.
He was adament it was going to end up in the cupboard after the novelty wore off, because I really did not enjoy cooking - AT ALL!.
I'm still in love with it over 6 months later & use it more now than I did at the start. It has absolutely changed my life.
.. I better go - just gotta' check my Hot Cross Buns ;)

Robyn
We were exactly the same. What sort of old car did your DH get Robyn?
-
Welcome! I am also a knitter cook, in fact I think I love knitting even more than I love cooking! Once you get a tmx your husband will wonder how you ever ever lived without it, I cannot imagine life without ours now, and ditto DH!
-
Cookie I bought 2 cars in a week for him, I got my thermomix too. :D
he bought a old rare HJ panelvan in extreemly good condition, then a old EJ sedan a couple of days later.
(which he drives when he has time).
The panel van will take 12 more months till we restore it to origional condition. We can't find another one is australia at all.
Bye the way, he loves my thermomix too.
cheers, Robyn
-
my DH said last night as he was enjoying the Chilli Beef meal that buying a TM was the best decision that he ever made :-)) (This coming from the same person who I distinctly remember saying at my demo before the consultant came that I didn't have to buy one - which of course I did)
-

Sorry but you can't convince hubby, thats why I saved my pennies for 18mths and bought it . When I got it home, he couldn't say anything because I had already bought it!. Now he see's it as a good tool.
Go Figure!!!!
-
Your cars sound fantastic Robyn. As you can see ours a little older and I guess a little less reliable. But great fun all the same. When I met DH he had a FX holden and it was always breaking down and we had to use my car to tow it home. Now 44 years later not a lot has changed. He's still got a couple of old cars that sometimes need towing home. :-\ :-\
-
You guys have some funny stories!! :D After I saw my first demo and came home raving about it, my hubby just said, "If it's going to save you time, get it!" ;D We had three little kids and I was pregnant with the fourth - actually, she arrived that night! So I think he was hoping that if I had a tmx I'd have more time for him!!! :)
I had a guy come to a demo with his wife, and she'd been to about 4 of my demos over the course of a year - after he'd sat through about 10 mins of the demo, he turned to her and said, "HOW many demos have you been to??? WHY haven't you bought one of these yet????? Order it, NOW!!!!" :D :D :D It was so funny! So I love husbands coming to demos!!
-
This has been great to read through, thank you everyone for sharing :D

In my DH words, "just buy the bloody thing will ya"!
So first thing tomorrow morning I will be ringing my lovely TM consultant with the good news.

I bet you couldn't sleep with all your excitement knittercook :D :D When do you think you will take delivery of your TM?
-
Love men who give their wives anything to keep them quiet knittercook - hope DH will be impressed with the meals you will soon be serving up to him. It is exciting so go ahead and have a good scream ;) ;)
-
yay so excited for you...im sure you will be counting the days :)
-
We all share in your excitement and understand your impatience. :)
-
Fantastic!!! and I LOVE, LOVE LOVE!!! your Golly tea cosy! ;)
-
Yay. :D :D :D :D Congratulations Knittercook. Hope the delivery is really fast.
-
DW dragged me along to my first demo at her sisters house. This is good. I sat at the back of the room drinking red wine with SIL's partner. However, I was the one who got excited. DW said "thanks but no thanks". I said "How well does it shave ice to make vodka slushies?"
Then some weeks later came the Varoma demo, once again at SIL's. I obviously went looking to have more drinks. At the end of the demo DW said "yep I want one".
Signed up to buy one on the spot. If you think I was surprised you should have heard what the consultant had to say. DW still learning, has big problems locking lid so you can turn knob to start machine. I keep forgetting to tell her to make sure the computer in the TMX is on and booted up before attempting to operate machine.
-
Thursday the 19th is the delivery demo ;D
Until then I am busy reading all I can on here, so thank you everyone!!
TM Ted, I love it how when men decide on things they decide so much more quickly than us women (well it appears that way). Vodka slushies, they sound divine, care to share how you make them ;)
-
Fantastic!!! and I LOVE, LOVE LOVE!!! your Golly tea cosy! ;)
Thanks Nay-nay, although I can't take credit for that particular one but there will be some gollies added to my tea cosy range real soon......gotta help pay for my TM somehow ;) ;)
-
yes what are they...recipe please ted lol :)
-
There really is no recipe but here is what I do:
6-8 large Ice cubes in TM31 jug. Double if you have 2 people. 10-20 Seconds on speed 7-10 or until Ice is crushed enough.
Put shaved Ice in glass, I like to use large 350ml stemmed wine glass, about 3/4 full.
Double shot (60ml) Vodka.
You can flavour with anything you like, I like a splash of Lemon Cordial, but you can use what ever your heart desires. For non alcoholics Bickfords Lime Juice cordial is great with a wedge/slice of lime. Be careful this is very sweet and sickly, try just a splash until you find the amount that suits the drinker.
My absolute favorite is 60ml American Honey. I occasionally let the 60ml measure run over.
-
Definately worth a try ted...and not being a honey expert what is so great about american honey lol?? does it have a certain flavour?? :)
-
American Honey - the name is a little deceiving - Wild Turkey American Honey Liqueur.
Sorry if you may have thought I was going to post a recipe for American Honey.
If your DH has a birthday and you are not sure what to get him, try a bottle of this.
I am sure he will thank you.
-
Oh yum that sounds like a nice drop, is it available here in Australia TM_Ted?
You would probably like my malted honey liquer so I will share.
MALTED HONEY LIQUER
1/4 cup malt powder
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup whiskey
2 tablespoons coffee liquer
2 cups cream
1 cinnamon stick
Place malt in a bowl with honey, sugar, whiskey and coffee, whisk until combined. Pour cream into a saucepan and stir over medium heat until almost boiling. Remove from heat, pour cream gradually into malt mixture, whisk until well combined. Allow to cool. Pour into bottle, add cinnamon stick, seal and refrigerate till serving time.
Now obviously this recipe is crying out to be converted into a TM recipe so if someone would like to do that and we can move it to the drinks section :)

Sounds a nice drop knittercook. If I had malt powder in the pantry I'd have made this already but it means a trip to the shop and I'm busy cooking at the moment. With 2 TM bowls, this would certainly be a breeze to make but I'm sure those with one bowl will find a way. If I get time to go to the shop later I'll let you know how it goes. Do you drink it straight, on the rocks or mixed with milk? If it is mixed with something, how long would the remainder last as there is only me to drink things in this house.
-
Dan Murphy's carry it so I would think it is freely available here in Australia.
-
JudyDawn it will last quite a while, the same as homemade irish cream and you drink it the same way, with ice or a little bit of milk is ok. It is quite rich so I think it definately needs the ice.
A question about the 2nd bowl, did you buy one or was it a special at the time and do you recommend a 2nd bowl, I am already thinking that a 2nd bowl would be real handy as I have noticed that a lot of the recipes call for mixing a few ingredients and putting aside while you mix the next lot of ingredients.
-
Thanks knittercook. I paid full price for my bowl which was pretty stupid as I probably could have had a demo or something and got it much cheaper but when I want something I want it now so it was just an impulsive decision after telling myself for so long that I didn't need it. If you tried to take it off me now though, you'd have quite a problem getting it ;D ;D I love having it - I've had both bowls working hard this morning. See your consultant and see if there are any special offers at the moment.
-
There was a special on purchasing a 2nd bowl last month, but I will probably wait until that happens again.
-
I am sipping your Malted Honey Liqueur as I type this reply knittercook. The flavour of the malt is very prominent which I like and it isn't too sweet or overly strong for me. I used 1/2 glass of the liqueur, 4 ice cubes and then topped it up with milk but I might put more liqueur into the glass next time as I could handle it a bit stronger. DD will get a small bottle for Mothers' Day tomorrow. Thanks for posting it.
Oops, forgot to give the TM instructions & metric quantities.
40g malt powder
100g honey
50g sugar
110g whiskey
30g coffee liqueur - I used Kahlua
500mls cream
1 cinnamon stick
Mixed the malt, honey, sugar, whiskey and Kahlua for 30 sec/speed 6 then set aside whilst I heated the cream in my other bowl. Wasn't too sure how long to do this step so started off for 8 mins/90o/speed 1 but it didn't seem hot enough so did it for a further 5 mins/100o/speed 1. If someone can tell us a different temp setting and speed maybe, I would appreciate it as that seemed an awful long time to heat 500mls of cream to almost boiling point. Anyway I got there in the end and it made 2 old soy sauce bottles full with enough left over for me to sample :P :P :P
-
Knittercook, congratulations on the purchase!! You won't know yourself once you've got it. Bring on the 19th!!
Karen

Hi Knittercook,
I haven't looked at this post for a while and was thrilled to see that you got your Thermomix. Hope you have a lot of fun with it.
BTW I visited your blog and loved your knitting. Do you sell the items? They were just gorgeous.
Cheers,
-
The feeling in your post knittercook is contagious - so pleased to have read this as my work day begins. :) :) :) Have loads of fun with your new kitchen miracle!!!!!!!! Be sure to tell all on your blog too! :D :D
-
cgonsalv and johnro I am having a cooking ball ;D ;D
Everthing is so easy and so much fun to make, so far only one disaster and that was the porridge from the EDC which if I had read the posts here first I would have discovered that it doesn't work :'( which is why from now on I come here first before trying a new recipe from the cookbooks. Tonight I am making pizza dough for the first time, I have always made my own in the breadmaker so it will be interesting to see how they go.
Thanks cgonsalv for your lovely comment about my knitting, it is my passion and what I do, yes to earn a crust. I sell my knitted items here locally and online there are links to my online shops on my blog, I did put them here but not sure if it is allowed so I removed them.
I am going to start writing about my TMX adventures on my blog, which will be a lot of fun!
have a great day everyone,
Sharon

knittercook, how will you find time to cook food let alone start a blog about it when you do so much knitting - just spent ages looking at all your lovely hats etc and it took me back 30 years when my 2DD's & I used to knit animals to make a few bucks on the side. I used to love knitting, it is so relaxing but I recently got rid of all my patterns to a retirement village fete as cooking and caring duties have now taken over my life. I knitted a beautiful white shawl 15 years ago for my 'grandparent's hope chest' which was never used as my DD wasn't into knitted baby things but I was thrilled recently to see 6 year old GD now loves it and even has it on her bed. When she was last here for a sleepover, it came along too. When I look at it now, I wonder how I ever knitted something so big. Congratulations, your work is a credit to you.
-
Oh thank you so much, I really love what I do so hope it shows in my work :)
I love the story of your GD shawl and that she is using it, I made my daughter a crocheted granny square one and it goes with her everywhere. Her friends are all very envious as apparently granny squares are back in vogue again, who would have thought!
-
Knittercook I have just had a look at your blog. I adore your knitting, it is very creative. I used to knit years ago but haven't done so lately. My Mother was an awesome knitter, her stitches were always beautiful and even.
Judy on the topic of knitting for children etc, my Aunt crocheted me a round woollen shawl to be brought home from hospital in. Apparently Mum used it for me and then 32 years later I used it to bring DD home in. It is beautiful and crocheted with much love I think.
-
Do you still have it cookie?
