Title: Hello from another newbie
Post by: Cookie-la-la on March 25, 2011, 05:28:33 am
Greetings and salutations,

My name is Anne and I'm a Thermomix owner  :D

I took delivery a couple of weeks ago and am slowly getting into it.  I've made quite a few of the recipes in the book that comes with the machine.  Am impressed at how fast it makes meal preparation!

I am on a weightloss campaign, 11kg down so far in 10 weeks so am very interested in converting not-so-healthy recipes into healthier versions of themselves.  Low GI is my secret so far.

I look forward to getting to know you

Hi Cookie-la-la and welcome to the forum. I too have been on a weight loss campaign but haven't lost anywhere near as much as you. Are you using Montignac recipes for your weight loss? I've found some of them really easy to convert to TMX recipes.

Hi  Cookie-la-la, Welcome and well done. So you reckon Low GI is the way to go? I would love to loose a few Kg as well. I might have to look into it. I lost weight when I first got the TM as I was being careful with what I cooked. There is just so many yummy desserts and cakes etc that I love to cook. I have to start reducing the amounts of bad stuff in the recipes and swapping them with healthier alternatives.

Welcome BG - can only agree that since having TM have used more EVOO, butter and sugar than ever before. Having said that have used more spices, herbs, vegetables, fruit and natural ingredients than ever before. We hope you find this forum helpful and inspiring. We also look forward to trying out any converted recipes once you settle in  :) Here are some helpful hints (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=578.0) when first starting out.

I just swap things about a bit.  If the recipe calls for any sort of cream to be used in the cooking process, I'll substitute with philly cream for cooking (60% less fat) -- butter I substitute with flora proactive buttery and I usually just reduce the amount of sugar and then taste and add more if required but I've usually found so far that you don't miss the extra sugar.  Also flour I substitute half with wholemeal flour, rice I use brown.  Just basic stuff, really.

I made the red thai curry last night using philly cream instead of coconut cream.  When I added the paste to the onions, I didn't add more oil to saute, there was enough moisture in the paste to saute.  I didn't put the potatoes in because I was serving with rice and that was enough carbohydrates for one meal, I added a bit extra chicken and heaps of veges and there was masses left over for lunch today and dinner for me tonight.
