Hey all, I live in Ipswich and we are lucky to have jamie's ministry of food setting up shop here. I am so excited as so many of the women I work with don't know how to cook and have never been part of a home where food is prepared. I have volunteered to be part of the effort do any of you have any experiences with the organization. I feel so blessed to have been raised in a multi generational home with a Greek grandmother who was always cooking and baking! Sadly my daughter has no interest yet but I live in hope as she is only 15

What is ' jamie's ministry of food '? I have never heard of it.
-
That's great Joynatalie, Jamie is great his Ministery of Food is so good and helps so many people.
-
He certainly tries to put people on the right track, here's (http://www.jamieoliver.com/jamies-ministry-of-food-australia) a bit about it.
-
sounds like a great opportunity joynatalie, cant wait to hear all about it. on a side note i was born in ipswich!
-
How lucky you are to be involved in this! I do so admire Jamie for his dedication to teaching people about good nutrition.
-
Your daughter will be fine, my 2 daughters had no idea and hated cooking, now one is a cooking teacher and the other is cooking with me most of the time and my son is a chef with his own restaurant.
I am Italian so food is all we think about just like the Greeks lol
ciao

Oh I heard about that over here and also what he was doing in the states and that he was gettting a fair bit of flack about it but think its a good idea teaching schools, families and other to get back to the basics and how easy it is to cook healthy homemade meals is great..there are too many people these days living on crappy foods and/or have no idea how to cook...think its great that you are part of it...there are other chefs around the world doing similar things!
-
Yes, he got a lot of flack about it. But then, it seems like the media (and some people) are just looking for things to criticise and be negative about. I think what he's doing is great, and all credit to him. Especially for not giving up in the face of all the attack.
It's brilliant that you're involved. Let us know how it all goes.

I was horrified to see how people ate in those shows and didn't think that it would be anywhere like that here! Hope it will be a fantastic opportunity for you guys down in Ipswich and something positive to look forward to after all the woes that came with the floods. :)

How fantastic!!! I would love to meet Jamie & I think his Ministry of Food is a fantastic concept ;D

Do you know what the general feeling of the people in Ipswich is? I often wonder how the poeple of the town feel. Do they feel they are being made out to be overweight etc?
-
Wish he would come to Bendigo in Victoria. We have been identified as one of the worst postcodes in Victoia for Obesity, diabetes and cancer! (and not surprisingly we have a very large number of fast food chains per capita) I love his work and message and would love the opportunity to be involved with sharing it. How fantastic for you joynatalie to get involved.

It is hard to gauge mood at the moment most people are still pretty pre occupied with the flood. Community workers are thrilled we filled a lecture hall during the introduction! We see some really overweight people with all the associated comorbidity stuff but worst of all are the really obese depressed kids. We are lucky to have an really good mayor and a support from q health and the council. we are waiting for the kitchen to open so I will keep you all updated.
-
It sounds really exciting. I'll look for you when it is televised. ;)

Hey all, thought I would update you. The course started last week but i got called into work but my daughter went with DH, she learnt to make a really good omelete and poached eggs, this week I was able to go and we made an amazing pumpkin soup with Parmesan croutons and a cucumber mint type of salad.
The instructors and centre are really passionate and enthusiastic and it shows in their teaching. Each particpant is given a station with ingredients and basic equipment but the kitchen is "open" and participants and encouraged to grab what they need and clean up at the endl
The kitchen is in the centre of town and is open to public viewing without being uncomfortable for the participantsl. Lots of people passing stop and are welcomed and told about the program and how to enroll. I was so impressed with their inclusive and inviting culture.
For "goodies" there is probably not a lot to learn in terms of basic cooking skills but I learnt a new way to chop onions and sautee sage as a garnish so i am happy!
Hopefully at the end of the ten week course I will be able to volunteer and contribute. This is truly an amazing project in terms of getting people back in the kitchen and a tad more accessible and realistic for most than Masterchef!

Sounds great Joynatalie. I too admire Jamie and what he has done getting the word out about healthy eating. Interestingly, our canteen in our little school is only open on Friday and we also have sushi from a local Japanese shop delivered once a week. Being in Australia, our canteen recieves no subsidy from the government unlike in Britain and the US and there are healthier food options on it. The fact is most of the food is wayyyyy healthier than most children have in their lunch boxes!! I am constantly amazed at the array of packets and packages--I'm not claiming to be a saint in the lunchtime nutrition stakes, but my own children always had a sandwich, a piece of fruit and a museli bar or cake (sometimes homemade). Most of the children in my class have at least 3 or 4 packets of something, ie chips, muesli bar, biscuits, so-called fruit items such as roll-ups, etc. I find it amazing!
