This, to me, is a bit of a worry...
I was just going to make those little cake pops and was idly nibbling an Oreo and reading the packet. I was actually checking to see what sort of colour made them so dark. According to the packet, there's no colouring...sorry, don't believe that.
Then, I read further and found that they're made in China by Nabisco Food (Suzhou) Co. Since the melamine in milk powder scare, I never buy any foods from China.
So, I guess I'm going to have to find a substitute to make the cake pops!!
-
perhaps the mint slice version? I don't buy biscuits so wouldn't know if they are any better though :-))

Certainly a little worrying MJ, next time I'm shopping I will have a look at a packet to see where the Oreo's that are sold in the UK are made.

Yes, I have never made cake pops because I don't like the usual ingredients in them... unless they're made like Elana from Elana's Pantry makes hers (http://www.elanaspantry.com/chocolate-raspberry-cake-pops/)! (Gluten free, naturally sweetened - made with almond flour cake.) Very pretty, but I'm always in a hurry, so haven't bothered yet!! ;D
-
I don't normally buy biscuits either, but was keen to make the cake pops. I'll check out the sites mentioned. I don't think I'd bother making a biscuit just to crush it up for a cake pop though!
-
The packets of Oreo's that are sold in the UK are produced in the EU for Kraft Foods.

not just for the cake tops but if you make them then you know next time you can also use a few for the cake tops..just a flying thought and yes probably too much hassle just for what you wanted them for! im not a lover of oreos or alot of bought biscuits personally and much prefer homemade but might give the recipe a try...they look yummy

For those Tim Tam addicts in Australia, have you noticed that sometimes they seem smaller, thinner or not so tasty - SOME Tim Tams are made in Indonesia - I am told you really have to read the small print on the packaging first to ascertain whether they are of Australian or Indonesian origin.
-
When I need an intensely flavored chocolate cookie I make these cookies.
cocoa cookies (http://www.asenjigalblogs.com/resurrected-recipes-from-long-ago/cocoa-cookies-for-christmas-or-anytime/)
I don't use Oreos or other commercial cookies because they have ingredients that I don't want to consume.
I'm pretty sure the black cocoa is available in Australia as one of the members on another forum who lives in Sydney has made these cookies with it.

No - i wouldn't bother going to the trouble of actually making up the bikies just to crush but you can make the mix up and press mix flat into the bottom of tin then crumble that up without forming into bikies. I do this when I'm making a recipe that calls for a bikie base as I too won't buy the nasties in the supermarket isle. ;)
-
Nay, that's a great idea for a biscuit base. Wouldn't work for cake pops, though as they're not cooked.
Black cocoa? That sounds interesting Andie. I can't open your link as I get a message saying the server is down.
The Oreo Cookie recipe sounds really yummy. Think I'll be making them, but not to crush up!!
-
Oh gosh. I'm glad that I sent the oreo cookie pops to work with DD. I'm quite fanatical about food from China. I won't buy it and will go without.
The Choc Mint biscuits make lovely cake pops.
-
ok i have to ask as things like muffin tops and cake pops dont exist over here..anyway what are cake pops..??

Here's the thread on Cake Pops Frozzie:
Cake Pops (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=4880.0)
They were started by an American woman, Bakerella and you'll see some amazing decorated cake pops on her site: Bakerella (http://www.bakerella.com/category/pops-bites/cake-pops/)
I finally got to open the site you linked to, Andie. I use Dutch Cocoa in all my cooking, quite my accident as the Woolworths Home Brand is Dutch Cocoa. It's the darkest, most delicious cocoa you've ever seen. I don't buy Cadbury's anything and that's all that was available, so I bought it and am thrilled that I did!
-
thanks mj..ah i had seen them before but didnt know they were called cake pops or actually what they were called point!..looks like alot of trouble and alot of sugar ..they do look cute though :)
-
MJ I think nay-nay meant that you book the biscuits as a slice to save you the time of making the biscuits to crush. Just cook the "biscuit slice" and then crush it. Hope I am right and not confusing everyone :o :o
-
:-[Yeah - that's what I meant to say. Just 'bake' bikie mix as a slice then crush it. ;)
-
Ahh, right! I get it! Yes, good idea. Could easily do that, but I think I'll just use some other biscuits such as the Mint Slice - that would be yummy with the chocolate mint flavour.

It truly is yummy MJ!
Well, thanks for bringing my attention to this :o
To be honest, it has never occurred to me to check where biscuits have come from :-\ I must be still living under a rock!
Shame really.....we like them.
Just bought a couple of containers of mini oreos, to decorate cupcakes......guess I should look on the back now.
-
Wait until the cupcakes are eaten. ;)

i agree lol
so many times i have gone through cupboards and either gave away or thrown out foods because of labels i never seem to check..one of these days i will check beforei buy but shopping is generally a speed effort with miss DD in tow so spending time looking at every label would take forever which is also why i guess im trying to make as much from scratch as time permits!
-
Thought I would bump this up with a recipe I've come across on a lovely wee blog ;D
http://annies-eats.net/2011/06/20/diy-oreos-and-a-giveaway/
I'll be giving them a try, sometime, lol!
-
I can't see what's on that blog yet LeeJ (DD has the fast internet stick, so mine wont load :-))), but will check it out later!
Well, I'm afraid the oreo's seem to be everyone's favourite cupcake. I crush them up and mix in with the batter, and then decorate with a mini oreo.

Is there there a different type of biscuit around, equivalent to an oreo?
-
It's a recipe for a pretty close bickie to an oreo Maddy ;D They look fantastic, and an easy conversion to thermo too!
Which recipe do you use for your icing? It looks so lovely!
-
Here is the recipe Maddy ;) Until you can get into the link! lol
DIY Oreos
Printer-Friendly Version
Yield: about 20-24 sandwich cookies
Ingredients:
For the cookies:
1¼ cups all-purpose flour
½ cup unsweetened Dutch process cocoa powder
1 tsp. baking soda
¼ tsp. baking powder
¼ tsp. salt
1-1½ cups sugar*
10 tbsp. (1¼ sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 large egg
For the filling:
4 tbsp. (¼ cup) unsalted butter, at room temperature
¼ cup vegetable shortening
2 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted
2 tsp. vanilla extract
*The range of sugar called for here allows you to make these cookies as sweet as you like (or not). To make it closer to a store-bought Oreo, use 1 cup. For a sweeter cookie, use the full 1½ cups. I split the difference and used 1¼ cups.
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 375˚ F. Line two baking sheets with silicone baking mats or parchment paper.
In a food processor or the bowl of an electric mixer, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Mix briefly to combine. Add the butter to the bowl and pulse or mix briefly to incorporate. Add in the egg and mix until the dough forms a cohesive mass.
Scoop a scant tablespoon of batter onto the baking sheet. Continue scooping, spacing the dough balls a couple of inches apart. With moistened fingers, gently press down on the dough balls to flatten slightly. Bake for 9-11 minutes, rotating the pans halfway through baking. Transfer the baking sheets to a wire rack and let cool completely until the cookies are firm and set. Be sure the cookies are completely cooled before filling.
To make the filling, combine the butter and shortening in the bowl of an electric mixer. Beat on medium-high speed until smooth. Add the confectioners’ sugar to the bowl and mix on low speed just until incorporated, then increase the speed to medium-high and beat until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. Blend in the vanilla extract.
To assemble the cookies, pair them up by size. Use a pastry bag fitted with a plain round tip to pipe a swirl of filling onto the flat side of one cookie of each pair. Sandwich together with the remaining cookie and press down so that the filling reaches the edges.

Good one LeeJ! Thanks.
I shall give that a go.

:D :D
Have just pulled the first batch out, they are very yummy.
I used nuttelex so my son could have some too, they still taste very yum. I'll be using this recipe for the frosting though
http://www.stephberg.com/?p=2888
When they say scant teaspoon for dough mix, they mean it :D Mine are on the large size!
-
The next batches came out much better, roll by hand, then squash in hand, as apposed to pushing down on tray. It lead to a much more uniform bickie.

-
ok, after letting them cool, I would say they are more like a 'choc ripple' then an oreo. But I'm sure they would make a nice substitution into the cake pop recipe!
So I would rename it 'Arnotts Choc Ripple' ;)
Oh, weights!
330gm sugar (blitzed)
200gm flour
50gm cocoa
150gms butter
keep a close eye, as they are so dark, they burn easily :-))
-
Looks good LeeJ 8)
Just wondering....could you flatten the mix out, then use a small greased scone cutter, to make the mini sized ones, then sandwich with icing :-\ might have to give that whirl.
-
Defiantly could with this dough Maddy.
I'd say cook on the lesser side, as they are quite a crunchy cookie when cooled.
-
I've been looking for a crunchy chocolate biscuit recipe for years! Thanks!
