Name of Recipe: Blueberry Pie
Number of People: 6-8
Ingredients:
1 serve of almond pastry (from EDC)
4 cups fresh blueberries
1 tbps cinammon sugar
1/2 cup sugar (less if you have sweet berries)
1/4 cup arrowroot
1 tbsp lemon juice
Preparation:
Make the almond pastry as per EDC instructions and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
In a bowl add all remaining ingredients and stir gently. (I guess you could do this in TMX on soft spoon, reverse?)
Roll out pastry to be larger than your pie dish (I used a standard pie dish not a deep one) and place into dish, with extra overhanging sides.
Put blueberry mixture into pastry and fold in the overhanging sides.
Bake in hot oven for 30-40 minutes. (I put mine in a 200 degree oven for 30 mins then had to go out so just turned off oven and left pie in there).
Recipe was based on reading lots of different internet pie recipes.

This looks delicious. I probably won't be making it though as a punnet of blueberries is $4 or more here. I'm sure it would taste delicious.

I was super lucky Cookie as my friend's sister has an organic blueberry farm in Yarram and we went picking on Tuesday. I am not sure what she usually charges but we paid only $10 per kilo (compared to $4 per 125g punnet). I came home with 5 kilos worth (plus some squashed ones which my kids were very zealously collecting).
I have some blueberry jam cooking now - seems a little bit of a waste of such gorgeous blueberries but I wanted to try it out. will let you know how it turns out.

Lucky you Kerryn. Nice served with lashings of whipped cream but I can only drool at your photo with the price of blueberries ;D

Lovely pie Kerryn.A friend of mine believes because she has a sprinkling of blueberries on her porridge each morning, she has kept away all the cold and flu bugs this winter.
-
Thanks Kerryn - we are lucky enough to have 3 blueberry bushes growing in our garden, and have heaps of berries at the moment, so will have to try out this pie! Need to use the berries before the darn birds eat them all - we have 2 cats and the useless things lie in the sun in the garden watching the birds eating the berries - they dont even attempt to scare them off!
Judy, you could try growing a couple of bushes too - they grow well in Adelaide, and are not difficult. The fresh picked berries are well worth the effort!
-
I've never heard of anyone growing them before KJH, must check it out at the nursery. Thanks for that.
-
It might be a bit late in the season now, but in spring the nurseries up in the Hills have lots of bushes ..... they will even grow in a large-ish pot so long as you keep the water up to them.

Karen my friends trees are totally enclosed in nets to dash the hopes of the birds. They also have electric fences at low levels surrounding their vegie patch (not an appropriate term as it is huge) to stop the wombats. It is also very effective at scaring and hurting 5 year old Batman too, as my son found out...
I have seen blueberry bushes on sale in the Yarra Valley so might even try to get my own later in the year.
-
:D :D Poor Batman. My GD also discovered an electric fence when she was holidaying in Sydney but she had been warned!
-
Oh dear - poor Batman! I did laugh though ...... and I certainly can think of MANY uses for electric fences around our house (inside and out ;)) ...our DS 18 months is a total little monkey and nothing is safe :-)) :-))

We have 3 bushes, covered in nets. the birds just love them, the Blueberries, not the nets .they are not quite ripe yet. they do freeze very well. they are $15 a kilo locally.
-
I make a pretty similar pie but use cherries. It is amazing and everyone fights over how got the most. LOL
You can either use frozen cherries and halve them or fresh cherries and pit them (I have a cherry/olive pitter) and halve them.
-
do you think you could use frozen blueberries - correct me on this, but I think they may be cheaper than the fresh ones?
-
I buy organic blueberries at the farmers market and, although they are very expensive, I don't mind so much because they are always perfectly ripe and really delicious. Many of the commercially available frozen blueberries in the supermarket are picked too early and often taste tart - they actually put me off blueberries for a long time. I also have them sprinkled on my porridge in the morning and perhaps that is why I have been well through the winter as well!!
A good source of blueberry plants is available from www.diggers.com.au they offer several varieties which always look very tempting.
Anyway, I have digressed. That pie looks gorgeous and one I will definitely put into my recipe file.

You could definitely use frozen blueberries
-
CP63 our local supermarket has started unit pricing, so I know that the frozen berries are around $13-$14 a kilo, so yes they are certainly cheaper than the fresh (which I have most recently seen for up around $30 per kilo). Having said that I don't like frozen blueberries so it is interesting to read what Cuilidh says about them being picked too early.
Thanks for the link to plant suppliers too. I will certainly check this out.

Kerryn, I'm not sure where in Melbourne you are, but I go to the Abbotsford Childrens Farm farmers market (2nd Saturday of the month) or the Abbotsford Convent slow food market (4th Saturday of the month) for my blueberries. There is only one blueberry seller there so you can't go to the wrong stand by mistake - their name is Moondara (I think, but I'm not near my freezer at the moment to check). They are also selling fresh blueberries at the moment as it is their picking season so you have the choice of fresh or frozen. Other than that, I know there are other organic blueberries available at the organic stalls at Victoria market, but I have found the Moodara to be consistently the best.
