Title: Thermomix and healthy eating
Post by: dede on January 01, 2011, 01:49:03 am
Hi all, I am a little concerned about buying my thermomix which I need to pay for today. Everyone I know who has a thermomix said the only problem with it is they have put on weight. I definitely don't want to put on weight. Has other people had the same problem. How do I avoid this. does thermomx recipes have more sugar and fat? I wanted to buy the Thermomix for healthier eating and to save some money.
Any comments?

I've put on a couple of kilo's, mainly because sweet things are easy to make in it!

Certainly not because there is more sugar and fat ;) It's to do with what I'm making!!

You can DEFNIATLY use it for healthy cooking!! I am a sweets maker at heart though ;)

i think it's the same as anything, it's all down to what you use it for lol
most of us go a bit crazy make sweets and baked goods when we start - don't do that and you'll be fine!

dede it all depends on what you make in it - just like everything else really. I find it really easy to make the healthy meals that my family require and I lose weight that way with out even an effort.

I ALSO find it really easy to make all my kids snacks (5 of them and DH for work too) - what I find hard is resisting temptation for me to eat them  :-)) :-)) as healthy as I make most of them it is the treat ones that are my undoing - BUT that is purely my own self control etc. I could easily not make them and then there is no problem  ;D ;D

That is so true, I have 5 children and a Husband as well. It cost me a fortune to buy snacks for school/work. I have always cooked biscuits slices and cakes etc for them anyway. I guess it is really no different to what I already do just easier to do it. I would like to cut down on packaged food and make my own but I am concerned that what I make will  contain more calories than the packaged foods I already buy minus the additives and preservatives.

Dede, you honestly can't go wrong with your purchase.

If you can, get into the habit of using your Varoma a lot! Fantastic for steaming. Meat is spectacular and so are the vegies.  My family now prefer fish done this way. Everything is fat free cooking.  It's what you put on it that can be dangerous.  ;)

Fabulous for those summer salads and if you're after a sweet treat, make sorbet! You control the sugar content and there's no fat once again.

Win! Win! I say.

Good luck with your decision.

Hi. I used the Varoma for my veggies on Christmas Day. They were supposed to take 20 min or so, but after 40 min they were still quite "crunchy", is this usual? I was putting cheese sauce on the cauli, so it wasn't too bad, but I would have liked them to be more cooked.

Soblessed, I would think perhaps either that they were cut too large (which takes longer) or there were not enough steam vents open to allow them to cook.

I fill my varoma bowl then use the handle of my spatula to "drill" a hole in the middle of the bowl.

I have found the veg need to be quite small to steam in the 20 min. We usually steam ours for about 30 min so that you don't have to cut them so small.

Well I have just paid for my TM. I figure that I am in control of what goes in my mouth not the TM. So only me to blame if I put on weight. Now I have to wait for TM to arrive (I'm guessing around the 10th Jan)

You won't regret it, Dede!  I have been using a Thermomix for over 6 years now, and I cook healthy food and no one in our family is overweight! Okay, so that's partly the 'skinny genes' on my side  ;) but my dh would be a lot bigger if it wasn't for all the healthy tmx meals he gets!!  ;D  Fried rice in the Thermomix, for instance - no oil, lots of flavour!! (See this recipe)  (http://quirkycooking.blogspot.com/2009/08/thermomix-fried-rice.html) As long as you keep the sweets for now and then, you'll be right.  :)

I haven't put on any weight.  I make sure I eat healthily 90% of the time and let myself have a treat the other 10%.  As long as I make each meal with loads of vegies and have tonnes of fruit available to eat, the odd piece of cake or biscuit won't hurt.  It's when it becomes EVERY day that is the issue.  A few times a week is ok.  Also stopping at one is hard.

I love that my TMX is making me cook healthier than ever.
Steph.

Thanks Faffa!
I did have them cut fairly large, so I guess I need to be more patient & cut them smaller. (Love to get things done as quickly as possible! ;) )

I'm not quite sure what you mean when you say you "drill" a hole in the middle of the bowl though. Anyway, next time I'll just cut smaller pieces.

And yes I find my overall cooking is much healthier, but I do need to limit the sweeter goodies!

Dede as you said it is up to you what you put in your mouth. Before I bought my TMX (2 years ago) I had lost 30kg.  My weight now goes up and down by about 2 kg.If I put it on I make sure I lose it again. I try very hard not to eat the sweet things I make.
If it's a new recipe I'll have a small taste. I love baking and always have done, that is my downfall not the TMX.

Hi there.
I haven't put on weight from the meals in the thermie but have from the glass or two of wine I drink as I'm cooking/organising dinner!!
I dont make a lot of cakes/desserts as I'm eating gluten free but with the food I cook in the thermomix, I feel a lot healthier ie no additives, preservatives, nasties to worry about and you have complete control over what you cook. The thermomix wont make you fat. It comes down to the basics of metabolism, exercise, and portion control. I know that just because I have a thermomix, I havent increased the amount I eat, I probably have less leftovers than before the thermomix as the food tastes better, but I often deliberately make more food than I need and freeze portions, only to reheat them after work etc.

She means create a hole/ space in the middle of the veggies by pushing the spatula or your finger/ hand down and veggies aside so that the vents are free at the bottom of the varoma so the steam can move freely

I haven't put on any weight since getting my machine but it does take a lot of self-control as, once you discover how easy it is to produce lovely deserts and cakes, it becomes harder not to do so. ;D

I do try and cut down on the amount of sugar and oil/butter used in a lot of the recipes and I find it doesn't compromise the final product.   And as everyone else has said, everything we eat is just so much healthier now because there are no nasty additives and very little salt .

Also make sure you are using the varoma temperature for steaming.  :)

Dede - One of the things I love about my thermomix is that I am in control of how much sugar, oil etc that I use.  Homemade sorbet uses 1/3 of the sugar of the shop bought variety and you can always reduce it more if you want.  TM jam uses 1/2 the sugar of shop bought, and the homemade lemonade about 2/3 of the sugar and again you can change this if you want.  I find now that processed foods that I used to enjoy are now quite revolting to me and think my taste buds have changed. I have had my TM for over 2 yrs now and haven't put on any weght.  I am a TM consultant too and many of my clients have found they have lost weight without trying because they are eating more whole foods with less additives in it.  I think that making sweet treats can be a trap because thet taste so darn good and it's so lovely the feeling of having made something yummy from scratch.

dede like everyone else said the thermomix doesnt make you put on weight..its just that once owning a thermomix you can make so much more that you never bothered making before as everything is so much quicker and easier..all comes down to self control like with anything but i really hope you get alot of satisfaction out of making so many homemade goodies yourself..i certainly do and you can always adapt recipes to be lighter anyway not that you need to as most are pretty healthy, sweets and cakes aside of course!!  Just dont go into it thinking its going to make you put on weight but instead enjoy what it offers you and also enjoy the very supportive community here on teh forum whenever you need a bit of help...happy cooking!!

Thanks guys, I'm feeling much better about my purchase. Now to wait. My consultant said should have my TM by the end of next week which work out great as we are going away for a few days on holiday. I looking forward to making items that we use alot of to save money. Will be interesting to see how my grocery bill changes. I spent around $400-$450 a f/night (not including bread milk and other everyday items) Might take a little while to see the savings. I love this forum as I have found some great recipes and hints and tips.

Dede my TMX made me rethink the way I did my shopping.  I would just buy willy nilly whether I needed it or not and did end up wasting a lot of unused vegies at the end of the week.  Now I sort of menu plan and shop accordingly. Allowing for the fact that we are probably going to eat out at least once a week, sometimes more, I find it cheaper for me to shop when I need things rather than do a big weekly shop.  I have kept a record of all supermarket purchases over the past 2 years and it has averaged out to just over $100 a week for the 2 of us, the occasional visitor and taking food around to my Mum when and if needed. I am wrapped with this as pre-TMX days I was spending between $150-$200 a week on goodness knows what. Back then I was always quick to invite people to a meal if they wanted to visit but I don't do that so much these days.

its taken me six months jd but part of my NY resolution is to be more organised and menu plan etc and not waste as i was one for that too ie buying willy nilly and often id go in for one or two items and end up buying a whole trolley load.. after meganjane noted she used evernote in another post i am using that and findit works realy well for me and makes it much easier to get organised which i havent found that easy since DD arrived 2 y ago now...so its taken me a while but thanks to the thermomix and cooking any thing and everything out of my system lol i now am menu planning ..just have to wait and see how much we end up savingµ..probably a bit as when we couldnt be bothered making anything take out would usually creep inacouple of times a week..hope that menu planning helps avoid that!  :)

Dede, that's a huge amount of money you're spending on food. My grocery bill has gone down substantially since buying my TM. I probably spend  ~$100  per week on average now  on milk, eggs, fruit and vegetables for 4 people (admittedly two of whom are the size of hobbits). I don't buy processed food anymore and I love gong to the supermarket and nonchalantly walking past the dips, pate sections etc knowing that I can make all that stuff easily now and don't need to fork out for processed foods anymore. I also find that I have more money to spend on other lovely treats such as Brie, good quality chocolate etc. I have noticed though that my use of eggs and milk has gone up heaps since buying my machine. Must be because my kids are addicted to the custard I make! I also have found that I am better at planning ahead for the week. Even though I don't physically write down a menu plan for the week, I mentally work out what is in the fridge and then use recipes to use up whatever is in the fridge also calculating meals I can freeze for later on or using leftovers in different ways, if there are any leftovers.

Yes $400-$450 a f/night (not including milk bread etc for the f/night) is alot to spend. My goal is to get this down to around $300 f/night would be great (for 7 people including 2 teenagers and 2 adults). I am really going to analyze what I buy and try to eliminate unnecessary foods and replace lots with my own home made foods. With such a big family the money has to stretch a long way. If I can make a difference with grocery spending that will help a lot.

I can now understand your fortnightly spend if you have that many people to feed, but I think we all buy stuff in bulk when it's on special eg cream, milk etc and freeze it. Also, you learn to make things in the TM using produce that is in season and therefore, cheaper. Also, the best thing I ever did was to plant a herb garden and I can't remember the last time I had to go out and buy herbs. It is all the processed foods that cost the most to buy at the supermarket and once you get used to making a lot of things yurself, not only will you reap the benefits  financially, but you'll all feel a lot healthier!

You could purchase the Cyndi O'meara thermy cookbook - she is a nutritionist and has a back to basics approach. I have her other non-thermy cookbook and enjoy it. Waiting patiently for my Cyndi thermy cookbook :)
I have also made some things and cut the fat/sugar quite considerably with no problem! The sorbet for example, I only use 50g - otherwise it is way too sweet for our taste !
I am wary of cutting thin slices of bread too - home made bread is much heavier and much more tempting too!
 :)

Yes I always try and buy in bulk or on special. So when the cheese we like is on special I buy 6x1kg blocks or more then that lasts us until the shops have it on special again  ;) it means I save up to $3 per kilo on an item like cheddar cheese. This is the same for cream cheese, cream, and any other items we may buy that can be frozen or that keeps well :)
