Title: Hello from WA
Post by: Learner on December 28, 2010, 12:32:14 pm
Hi to all,

Just got my thermomix 4 days ago & haven't stopped cooking & eating. Learning slowly but loved everything so far. Can anyone tell me the absoulte necessities to always have in the house to make the basic dips, sorbets, custards & kids snacks. This would greatly help.

Thanks & look forward to sharing reciepes :)

Hi and welcome Learner. What part of WA are you from?
For dips you will need cream cheese and what ever you are going to put in it, sorbets-plenty of ice and fruit, custard you will need the eggs and milk.
Possibly the best thing to do is look at the recipes you hope to make for a few days and go out and buy the ingredients. You may find that your shopping list changes a bit and you will need lots of different things in the pantry until you stock up.
I found that I was using more EVOO and sugar than ever before, possibly because I was making more than before.
Let us know how it goes.

Hi Learner, welcome to the forum.  I would do as Cookie suggested too, pick out some recipes for a week, do your shopping and gradually your pantry, fridge and freezer will begin to stock all the ingredients you use most of.  You do tend to have to buy a lot of things to start with unless you have already been cooking from scratch and already have your pantry set up for this but you will probably find down the track you have more items in your pantry than you ever did before eg spices have tripled in this house. I only buy one type of sugar now and from that make my castor sugar and icing sugar so some things you will carry less containers of.

No, I rarely add sugar to my sorbets. I'm not sure why it's runny. Are you adding the full amount of ice?

If it is mostly watermelon you may like to freeze some of it into ice cube size pieces. Any fruit that is quite liquid will make a runny sorbet.  Don't use all frozen fruit without adding some water to it as it needs some liquid to move.

Welcome!
I'm from Perth too, and got my Thermo the week before Christmas.  This forum is fantastic for tips and rescues, so ask the experts anything you like - I do  :D
