I don't know whether it's hit Australia as yet, but there is a very good Jamie Oliver series in th UK called Jamie's 30 minute Meals.
He shows how to do a main dish, side dish and dessert in 30 minutes - and they're lovely. The whole meal ready in 30 mins. You can watch it on you tube if you search for jamies 30 minute meals.
Why don't we have a go and see if we can't do the same thing here, but bringing thermomix in on the deal. The rules would be that thermie is involved, but it doesn't have to be exclusively thermie.
Anyone fancy it?
-
Great idea. I have the cookbook for the series as well, and there are some lovely recipes that you can do in that timeframe. With the TM, I think we all have the advantage of being able to cook healthy, tasty meals in a decent time, so a thread of this nature sounds good to me!
-
Oh, I was looking at his cook book the other day, it would be lovely to transform some of them to the thermomix and make them even easier!
We are really struggling with doing meals at the moment!
-
I have one of Jamie's books but have been rather unimpressed with it - found it all a bit bland and tasteless.
So OK, is this 30 minute meals of any good??

I thought this recipe book was much better than some of his other ones. He offers alternatives to different meals etc. By the way, I thought the topic of this thread was not Jamie Oliver himself, but rather the concept of a 30minute meal recipe thread ie meals one could knock up from scratch after work etc. I'm not advocating that people go out and necessarily buy this cookbook. I happened to find it on special at Costco in Melbourne, hence me buying it. I just love the idea that Jamie has of everyone eating the right foods and preferably from scratch, which is basically why a lot of us have bought a Thermomix, to know what is going into our food and controlling how it gets cooked. The concept of being able to do a complete meal in a Thermomix eg cooking a sauce, steaming veggies, fish, whatever at the same time means it is ideal for 30 minute type meals.
-
Thanks for that CarolineW. I'm sure it is starting or is on here.

Exactly :). Not that I'm averse to adapting Jamie's recipes as well, but I thought that we could come up with some practical, tasty ideas ourselves. Tasty, healthy, easy. The reasons we bought our tmx, but sometimes inspiration (and/or the brain) is lacking.

Hi All
I was bought this book for Christmas and was instantly thrown into thoughts of how to convert the recipes. Especially since he even says at the beginning of the book that most of the recipes use a mixer or blender to speed things up - that was a sign for me right up front that the recipes could be good for thermie cooking.
He does some great juices and icecreams and custards as well as pastas and risottos. I think I will start from the beginning and as I convert them I will post the recipes up to see what you think. I am a beginner at this though so you will have to be kind! :-\
-
Sounds like a good book. I'll have to see if I can find it on amazon!
-
That would be great flipper.
I asked for it but dh couldn't find it.

$33.09 at Book depository (US - free worldwide postage). http://www.bookdepository.com/book/9780718154776/Jamies-30-minute-Meals
-
:D Maddy, I just purchased it from there a few hours ago!
-
I've been watching the '30 minute' series on channel 10 at 6.30pm weeknights, there have been quite a few that I can see being able to convert.
He had a lovely curry on there, will experiment with them when it arrives :)
-
Is that price better than what we can purchase for here in Australia?

Not sure what it retails here for Judy ??? But I will say that Book Depository is the ONLY place I purchase cook books, or any other sort books I'm looking for.
Some books I have purchased have been more than 50% cheaper than here.....and that's with the free postage anywhere.
Waiting time is usually about 10 days, and if you pre-order books not yet released, you get them even cheaper ;)
-
Mmm, will have to think about whether to buy it or wait for you girls to convert some of his recipes. I could start a book shop myself with all my cooking books and that is after I got rid of at least half of them a while back.
I received the Bakerella Cake Pops book just before Christmas - great book isn't it?
-
Judy, yeh it's a good price (I love the book depository - got a surprise - forgotten - package from them today - unfortunately for dd2 not me) though supposedly they were at target for under $20 before xmas (if they were they sold out before dh got there, lol)

It's no secret that I adore Bakerella! LOL.
Oh and just to encourage you more Judy.....check this one out!

A pre-order for only $12.20......but you do have to wait 71 more days :P
-
OMG Maddy that is so tempting.
But not being a cake/dessert person would I actually make them?
That cover picture makes me want to though.
So are the recipes hard to do?
-
I've seen these on another forum, but they just sound too sweet for me. They look gorgeous, though and would be a great talking point at a party.
-
I had a go at making the Rudolph ones for Christmas day. They definatley were sweet (I made mine using Brownies) but they looked fantastic!
-
Thanks Maddy, will taste the first lot made with the oreos today (hopefully, if there are not too many kids down there to have first pick). I think they are more suited for children's parties than for adults.
-
It might be too late for those if you who have already purchased, but just before Christmas I got Jamie's book for $19.00 at Target. Didn't realise I had got such a bargain until I thought I would like another copy (the first was a Christmas pressie for someone) for myself. I went back but they had sold out. Now that Christmas is over a few more bargains might pop up. I did have a quick peek and liked a lot of what was in there, except he does use a microwave for some of his cooking and I don't have one. He also likes to use a far bit of pancetta and I'm not a fan of anything pig.
-
So are the recipes hard to do?
Let you know when I get the book in 71 days ;)
I too think the cake/icing mixture is too sweet......that's why I like the oreo mix.
I'm basically ordering it for the decoration factor.
Flipper......Try this http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=4880.0 It's more like mud cake, and so quick and easy.
CarolineW....Sorry for Hijacking your thread! :-[

I've been enjoying watching Jamie the last few nights and agree that his recipes would make use of the TMX. I had a look around for the book when I went shopping but haven't been able to find it. May wait a while before I order it from Book Depository.
-
it's cheaper elsewhere ;) http://www.booko.com.au/books/isbn/9780718154776
-
Thanks Karen, went for it at double day at $24.95 incl post.
-
Thank you. :-*
-
I bought mine for $27.95 at Costco in Melbourne. Last time I was there, they still had copies left.
-
Mummy/daughter time lately is made up of watching Nigella Express (finished now) and now Jamie's 30 minute meals. Then we cook together. DD9 says, "These people need a Thermomix Mum!!" They do use a food processor for most of their meals and the Thermomix makes their "fast" meals even quicker. ;)

Just in case anyone is missing the series on tv, it's all on you tube as well :)
-
That brings a tear to my eye Nay-Nay. My baby turned 30 yesterday. Now our mum/daughter time is spent over coffee/shopping/holidays. We used to turn out some 'creations' many years ago. Then poor DH had to eat them. I was always let off as I had helped make them.
-
Thanks for the link to Booko, Karen - what a great site!!! My dh orders a new book online every second day, just about, so that will be very handy!
We had a cooking competition up here last year where we had 30 minutes to make 3 dishes (with two Thermomixes though, and a team of 5) from a mystery box of ingredients - it was great fun! My team had to do a bread, a sorbet and a main - so we did pizza bread (very quick) which was the Salmon Salad Pizza that I invented for that, the Chocolate Orange Sorbet (also invented for that), and a thick vege soup with meatballs steaming on top. We made it within the 30 minutes, and won! So much fun :) I would love to see more recipes that are quick like that.
-
why does he order so many jo?
i read 2-3 books a week (when i'm working, more when i'm not) but i can rarely afford to buy new ones, i get second hand ones mostly and now free with my kobo ;)
-
I'm envious Jo. Although I must admit I couldn't read that many a week. When I retired I planned to spend 1 hour a day just reading. Then I got my TMX, so with that and the forum and all the usual boring house jobs I don't read as much as I should. I'm about 1 a week person, except on holidays I read many more. DD reads a heck of a lot and I read her cast offs and buy some of my own. I also belong to a book club that meets monthly and have just joined a local ABC book club.
-
He's not into novels - it's all books on Spanish (which he's learning), survival techniques, true life adventure and survival stories, self defence, biographies, that sort of thing... (yes, I know, he's a little odd - ex-army survivalist type - his dream is to go to South America and explore the Amazon or something!)... if he's interested in something he buys books on it! Mostly he gets 2nd hand ones off ebay for really cheap ($2 - $4, sometimes even cheaper)... Our many bookcases are double stacked! Sigh. Oh well, maybe we'll start a library someday! ;)
-
He soounds an interesting sort of person. My DH will not read fiction either, but give him a book on something he's interested in (Model A cars) and he will read for ever. Our evenings are quite often all of us sitting reading.
-
Yes, us too - but I like novels better! ;D Actually, I think I spend more time on the computer than reading these days... all these tmx forums and sites to look at... :D
-
I love novels. I will read almost anything. The book I'm reading for bookclub is 'Snow Flower and the Secret Fan' by Lisa See.
It isn't a book I would have chosen for myself but it is really good. The story of a girls life in a village in China. The foot binding part was agonising.
-
That sounds really interesting - I've read about that too, and it's so awful!
-
My husband also reads mostly non-fiction .......... he is completely into military history, which I just cannot see the attraction ??? ??? but at least if he buys countless books on war and military history, I can buy countless cookbooks without comment ;D ;D
-
i think my dh has read one fiction book in the 13 years i've known him! but i love my fiction novels (mainly fluffy stuff these das)
-
My DH calls them 'scurrilous french novels'. They are great when you can't devote a lot of time to reading as they are so easy to pick up and just continue on without having to remember things.
My DH claims to have read lots of fiction. Mainly 'Noddy' etc when he read to DD.
-
What is it with men, that they don't like novels??? My dh calls them 'Bilge and Swoon' :D - not that I read Mills and Boon, never have - I like mysteries ;D
-
Yes mysteries and 'who dunnits.'
-
yeah, i love murder mysteries, detective novels etc, along with a bit of horror / supernatural stuff and heaps of chick lit :D
-
What a pity we don't love closer I could pass mine on to you.
-
Finally found Jamies 30 minute meals cookbook today in Coles of all places has anyone converted any of his recipes yet?
-
I just did the Piri Piri Chicken tonight Yvette, turned out wonderfully, will type it up shortly :)
-
I heart Jamie ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Me too!! ;D I've been making his American Chop Salad in the tmx - so yummy! (Nice to have a different salad than the same old beetroot/coleslaw/Asian, etc) It's from his 'Jamie's Dinners' cookbook. (But don't try and chop the tomatoes and lettuce in the tmx with the other veges - not a good look!!! lol :D )
-
Phew, I thought this topic was turning into a book club! :D ??? :-))
-
Hee hee! :D
-
Great LeeJ will look forward to the Piri Piri Chicken thank you
-
Hi guys,
I just got back from Down Under a few days ago, and came for my tmx forum fix :D
I'm excited to see the piri piri chicken conversion. And go Flipper. How fantastic that you're going to convert your way through the book. I can't wait.
Once the jet lag has finished I'm going to have a look to see if I can convert something too. I think you're probably all on the right track to start off by converting Jamie recipes. It'll probably make it easier for us to come up with our own later. And let's face it, it's hard to beat a Jamie recipe ;D
-
Good to hear from you Caroline - I was wondering if you made it down under. Hope the trip wasn't too traumatic :)
-
Hope the trip here had the desired effect Caroline - bet it's nice to be back home though :-* :-*
-
have you tried http://www.booko.com.au/ for comparisions on the best price. It tells you the cheapest place to buy and also shipping prices
-
Lovely to have you back Caroline W.
