Hi, thankyou all for your previous posts. I had a demo at my house last week and VERY disappointed. I won't be getting one. The risotto tasted like plastic, the dip was overpowering, the sorbet was tasteless, the bread was doughy and the list goes on. It didn't seem faster at all. The risotto still took 20min (not including prep time) and the lady still chopped everything. It didn't save any time and seems a waste of money. I had hopes for this machine and was sold before she did the demo. Now I will be spending my money on the house. I'm really disappointed. :'( I was also looking forward to being a member of this forum, it's so welcoming. :)

Oh, what a terrible shame. It sounds like you had a VERY poor demo.
Risotto does still take 20 minutes but its 20 minutes of it mostly doing itself.
I can feel your disappointment coming across the seas and I wish there was something I could say but anything I say is going to make me sound like a mad TMX evangelist ;D
Hugs
Nik

Sorry to hear that 'not sure yet'. As Nik said, the risotto takes the same amount of time but whilst it is stirring and cooking itself you can be off doing something else instead of standing there stirring for the whole time. I am not a great risotto lover to start with, maybe you aren't either so I wouldn't judge the machine on that particular meal. I experienced none of the problems you did at your demo even though I thought the lass could have done better, everything tasted fine. Maybe you had a new consultant who is still feeling her way. Have a break from the idea of getting one and if ever you get the opportunity to go to someone else's demo (with a different consultant maybe) or even a cooking class, go along and see if you feel differently next time. It is disappointing to hear and I'm sure you are also disappointed in the outcome. Have fun spending the money on the house - hope to see you back here one day.
-
Oh dear, it sounds as if the demo was a bit of a disaster. Have you thought about sending feedback to Thermomix HQ as I am sure they would be interested in hearing your comments. If stuff tasted bad, then that's to do with the amount of ingredients used rather than the machine itself.
I don't think the Thermomix can ever cook anything faster than any other method - the time-saving comes in not having to chop or stir. The prep. for the risotto should only take a few minutes and I can definitely have a mushroom risotto ready within 25 minutes of starting and, meanwhile, I am doing something else.
It seems as if your mind has been made up, but I would encourage you to try and get another demo organised so that you can see the machine at its full potential.

There are some exceptional demonstators here on the forum, it's such a shame they couldn't show you the full potential of the TM. I would contact HO and tell them of your disastrous demo.
If I didn't live in the U.K. you could have come into my kitchen and we could have had a great day cooking with my TM.
Have a Merry Christmas and hopefully see you again in the New Year. :)
-
That is such a shame, with all those negatives I too would have reached the same conclusion as you. However the quality of consultants who frequent the forum is inspiring. Have a wonderful Christmas.
-
oh well, win some lose some :-X
-
Don't be put off by one demo - perhaps your demonstrator wasn't having a good night - in any event, I think just by spending half an hour reading the posts on this forum you can see that there are so many of us who love it and use it in all kinds of ways every day - if the only thing putting you off is the quality of the finished product that you experienced at the hands of one demonstrator, and you can see the potential in your own kitchen - then maybe arrange to go to a cooking class and give yourself the chance for a second opinion - we can't all be wrong!!
Have a happy Christmas anyway - and come back soon!
-
Hi, I am so sorry about your disappointment; perhaps you could get another demo or even have a two week test run if your consultant has a second TMX for such purposes. You could then try certain recipes and find out for yourself if you still like the machine or not. If you don't immediately but are still interested, try again; it is like buying a new car. The lady doing the demo let me try hers for 2 weeks because I was so excited about getting one and had to wait quite a while for delivery .....
By the way, thanks everybody for the warm welcome, I still have to find my way around :) Have a very happy Christmas. Bye
-
That would have been very disappointing. I can understand your decision. Perhaps the time isn't right for you, maybe later.
Merry Christmas and hope to see you again. :-*

I can really relate to your experience. Although I had a lovely consultant I didn't enjoy any of the food at the demo I went to (except the custard ;)) and couldn't really see what the fuss was about. I hate mushroom risotto with a passion, the dip was really strong and I wasn't keen on the brown rice crackers she had made in the TM to go with it. I had two friends with TM's though and I loved what they were cooking in their machines. One was a lurker on the forum (and still is) and was cooking delicious recipes from here. The machine certainly isn't for everyone, but don't let the demo put you off. :)
-
Chelsea, can't you convince your 'lurker' friend to come on here - we'd love to see her share her experiences.
-
I don't think so, but she has shared a couple of her recipes through me. ;D
-
Sounds like a shite demo! Honestly, I would go to another- with a different demonstrator, doing a different menu this time. The machine is fabulous, but I guess sometimes the demo's don't show that as well as they could...
-
I don't think the demo menu is that great personally, and the main course in particular not that inspiring but it's about seeing what the machine can do, not that you will necessarily love the food produced at the demo. Both demo's I've been to we had the pasta not the risotto which is alright but not something I'll make again. I don't like risotto so would have been very unsold on that but with either dish even though not really to my liking I could see how easy they were to make and how you didn't have to stir etc, how easy to chop things (so the consultant chopped up the garlic etc???!) and how versatile the tmx is.
The thing with tmx and risottos is that's it's 20 mins where you aren't doing anything unlike making risotto the old-fashioned way which is so labour intensive. The ease of making risotto even got me to try two myself (and still realised I don't like risotto and none of the kids do either, lol).
Surprised the sorbet was tasteless - what fruit did you use? The flavour is all in the fruit (obviously) so you must have had tasteless fruit.
Pity about the dip, was it the garlic and herb one? I love that (as do most of my friends I'm always being asked to make it for people) one, but maybe the consultant had quantites wrong or it's just a dip you don't like.
-
I'll wait until the new year and give a cooking class a go. I really hope it is a good one. Thanks for your replies and have a merry, dry and warm Christmas!
-
what a shame :(
as you can see from the forum most of us love our tmx's (no other kitchen gadget like it!) but i guess it's not necessarily suited to everyone. if you know someone with one i'd ask about trying some recipes that suit you better and see if that helps?
-
Hello, you might want to reconsider. I have had my TMX for about 2 weeks and made the Mushroom Risotto was just as good as any high end restaurant--made the smaller portion, and gave some to my neighbour who thought it was perfect. Also, have made the Tapenade, cauliflower soup and leek and potato soup--and all the stock pastes. I made bread but with Red Fyfe flour and found it to be a bit dry--but then the recipe didn't call for Red Fyfe flour so what can I expect. My demonstrator did a great job, but I found her food to salty--so I cut back on the salt, especially in the stock pastes--which I then formed into little balls and froze--ready for more soup, or whatever. Hope you find this helpful--Marnie from Canada!
-
I had already made my mind up to buy a TM prior to the demo and just did the demo to show some interested friends. I agree that the demo is not awe inspriring. I believe it just gives you an indication about the thermomix's potential.
-
It's a shame HO lets loose some crappy consultants. From what I can tell, they let all and sundry "train" to be consultants and continue to recruit knowing full well that it isn't for everyone. They love the ones who are salespeople and don't really care if they can cook - I'm sure I'm not the only one who has come across consultants like that. I hope HO reads this thread and considers carefully the people they recruit - all well and good that they love the ones who can really sell, but if they don't provide any follow up customer care, and consultants who are knowledgable about food, they won't see the end of threads like this.
-
I had my demo, I was pretty sure I would get one, then I had my demo, and I wasn't so sure, it really wasn't great, I felt I knew more then the consultant :o
So, I researched more and more, reading blogs, and forums, and decided to purchase one.
I love it, it will take me a long time to figure out all the uses for it ;)
-
Hi Bek... so sorry to hear your demo wasn't too great!!! Didn't you say you're on the Tablelands? You're welcome to come over to my place some time and I can do some cooking with you, the kind of things your family like, so you can see the Thermomix's true potential! I think people's tastes vary a lot, and what one person likes at a demo, others will dislike severely! I always try to make the demo suit the host family, and change it a bit each time to do that. I didn't really like the mushroom risotto when I first had it either, but now I make it with chicken in it, and more stock, and more flavoursome mushrooms if possible, and it's delicious! And I always make sure it is still a bit 'soupy' when it's finished the cooking time, then put it into the Thermoserver for 5 mins to absorb a bit more 'juice' - then it's perfect, not gluggy at all. Anyway, I'd love to do some cooking with you if you like - just PM me! :)
-
Well there is an offer you can't refuse!! I'd love to pop round to Jo's for a cooking session!!!
-
Jo you are a true champion of the TMX world!! What we would all give to be able to come and do some oooking with you :-* :-*
as a consultant I do have to say though, I didn't know anything about food when I first started as I was the ultimate packet and jar queen! What I have gained in knowledge on my journey is amazing ... then again I have made it my mission to learn as much as possible and it has been this forum that has taught me the most!
-
Well I wish you would - I'd love that!!!! ;D
I'm coming to Perth in February - aren't you in Perth Faffa? Can't remember who said they'd like to get together then... but I'm up for it!
-
Yes that was me!!!! and a few others too, we would love it :-*
-
I guess the ultimate problem here is with individual consultants. I certainly agree with the premise of needing a demo to buy a Thermomix as I would never want to buy one of these wonderful machines from a store only then to have minimal, if any after sales service. This kind of machine needs customer service and as far as I am concerned, if you are forking out this much, I would expect nothing less. The fact that I can email or phone my consultant whenever is a great concept. I also thought about being a consultant for a while, but cannot commit to it, but I probably have 'sold' a few machines to people I know just by word of mouth and by seeing my one in action. You don't just need an enthusiastic consultant to do a demo you really need someone who is passionate about cooking and the virtue of how easy the Thermomix makes everything, not just someone who is great at selling you a machine. I cannot emphasize how much this machine has changed my cooking since getting one. I can produce one meal after another almost effortlessly and if the oohs and aahs of my family are anything to go by whenever I put food out on the table, I know my TM has paid for itself and I have noticed the difference straight away in how much healthier our food is. No-one can or should convince you to buy something you can't afford or don't want. All I can say is that compared with other kitchen appliances ( most of mine now gathering dust) I use my TM routinely and I spend my days at work thinking up what I can make for dinner in it. I have always loved cooking since childhood but I have never had so much enthusiasm for cooking in my life since buying my thermie.
-
Well said, Merlin!!! :)
-
I was just about to write the same thing Jo! :)
-
Chelsea, we must be telepathic- Either that or total thermie junkies!!!
-
Hear, hear. Bravo Merlin, well spoken on behalf of many of us.
-
My story is fairly similar to others. A friend of mine was raving about the machine and I was sold on it after reading this forum and other blogs. I love the fact that you can prepare healthy food with minimal effort. My consultant was passionate about the machine and food but was let down a little by the food she had to prepare at the demo. We had pasta which wasn't that flavoursome. I already love cooking so for me it was more about it's potential rather than the taste of the food at the demo. I've only had mine 2 weeks and have used it several times a day and have adapted our family favourites to suit as well as using EDC. I made the mushroom risotto for a friend with a few personal tweaks and it was great. Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice on the forum. It's certainly made adapting recipes a breeze.
I would encourage Not sure Yet to take up QuirkyCookings fantastic offer and see it's full potential.

Well I wish you would - I'd love that!!!! ;D
I'm coming to Perth in February - aren't you in Perth Faffa? Can't remember who said they'd like to get together then... but I'm up for it!
the get together is at my place...we haven't come up with a topic yet and I think the date is up in the air apart from it not coinciding with the Rotto Swim. You're welcome to join us QC ;D
-
Ooh, I'd love to come! I'll be there from about the 12th to the 19th, give or take a day or two... Let me know when and the address and I'll see if it'll work! :)
-
I'm so sorry to hear that your demo was such a disaster. I would definately contact your HQ and attend another one with a more experienced demonstrator. As I don't like risotto I did ask for some other things to be made (at my expence) at the demo. She was glad to do this and also brought a cake. Have a talk to the demonstrator, I have found that they are only too happy to be of help. Good luck!!!
-
Well, my husband has convinced me to get one!!! I will have to get some more lessons and talk to you all a little more!! I will take you up in your offer Jo and I'll email you shortly! Thank you everyone for your encouragement. I think I will have to change my name though from Not Yet Sure!
-
Yay and double yay for you Jo :) :-* :-* I am sure you will make the most of it now and realise that everything can be personalised in your TM for you and your family. I rarely make risotto at a demo, only if the customer really really likes risotto and wants it. I like it but not everyone does ;)
-
You will have to change your name Not Sure Yet ;D ;D Great news and good on your DH for convincing you. You might have to rename yourself Jo's Prodigy after some cooking lessons from her as I'm sure you will be suitably impressed and will rush home and order your own TMX - oops, you won't have to as you can order it from Jo on the spot. ;D Good on you Jo :-*
The demo I went to over 2 years ago now didn't make risotto either but did an all-in-one type of meal (veal pizzaiola from the EDC but using chicken thighs) which I think demonstrated the machine in a much better way and is probably more now like what they call a varoma demo. Risotto lovers (and I am not one of them) should be very impressed with their demo though. Will be very interested to hear what you cook with Jo down the track.
-
Yay!! :D yes, you'll definitely have to change your name! (I'm having an "Allergy Alternatives" demo at my place on the 7th, so NSY is coming to that :) Hopefully she'll then be 'I'm sure now!' ha ha!)
I agree, JD, that an all-in-one meal shows the machine off so well - this is my menu for my allergy alternatives demo, in case you're interested - this may change depending on who's coming and what foods we need to avoid!
Fruity dream (all fruit, honey sweetened, dairy free)
Dairy free pesto or macadamia 'cheese' (haven't decided) with rice crackers
Spelt bread rolls or gluten free bread (depending on who's coming)
Raw beetroot salad or American chop salad
Steamed main meal : Chicken and cashews with a coconut-cashew satay sauce in the bowl, and rice cooking underneath in the rice basket
Dairy free chocolate mousse
Dairy, grain and sugar free Pecan cake served with cashew cream
If anyone comes who can't have eggs or nuts, that will need to be drastically revised!!! ;D
-
I don't have any allergies but it all sounds good to me Jo.
-
Great menu Jo.I hope you have great day cooking on the 7th. :)
-
I am very excited to be able to participate in some more classes and learn from Jo who has such a lot of knowledge! I would like to make the point that my demonstrator was lovely, very kind and believed in her product, it was just the machine I was disappointed in :'(. I've since had my queries answered and I'm now hooked. What sold me was the stock and yoghurt recipes. ;D I'll be ordering it today!
-
Yippee!! ;D
-
Hi QuirkyJo,
Your menu sounds fantastic - I wish I lived closer so could come too!
Have you posted the recipe for the chicken and cashew satay recipe with the rice somewhere? I would LOVE that recipe please :-* :-*
-
That is really wonderful news. I think you should keep your name so that people new to the forum will know that you became convinced to buy one. Keep us informed.
Jo your menu sounds awesome.
-
Well done not so sure. You'll have to change the thread to not disappointed!!!!
Also, Jo, why cant we have anyone like you in Melbourne who does an allergy type demo ie offer a cooking class etc for coeliacs/ gluten free etc. Apart from those of us who are genuinely Coeliac, a lot of people are adopting a free diet as a lifestyle choice of eating and I think a specific class for TM owners or prospective owners in this area would be wonderful.
-
I think it's important to have separate classes for people who have allergies, or just are interested in a healthier way of eating! I do one each month, if possible. I've been asked by a few people to hold one in Perth when I go over in February - but I'm sure there are other consultants out there who could do the same thing... Maybe we should ask Head Office about organizing a few classes like this in the different areas. There are so many people I meet who have bought a Thermomix for this kind of cooking, and I know they'd appreciate the help! I have another demo coming up for a family whose daughter has a severe nut allergy - This lady walked out of a cooking class (with her daughter) because there were so many nuts used in the dishes, so I offered to do a private one for her. Sometimes it's easier to do a special demo for someone, than to try and do a basic one to suit everyone! :)
-
Oh, and I keep meaning to post that recipe KJH - I'll do it soon, I promise!!!
-
Yah I'm sure you will feel differently after Jo's demo - if not I guess it's just not the machine for you (though I can't see how you can blame a machine for the taste of food, it's the ingredients that make the taste not the cooking method).
Jo -yumm!! Wish I could come to the demo even if I am coconut free, could live without the sauce, lol. All of that sounds so nice.
I'd like to know about the macadamia cheese? Peanut free but love macadamia's. Sounds like an expensive but divine cheese.
-
Zan, the recipe for macadamia cheese is here on the forum: http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=3035.0
There's also some other 'cheese' recipes with pine nuts there. I've only tried the first one, and it's yummy! Just don't over-process it, or it will be more of a 'spread' than a cheese! (Unless you want 'cheese spread' - lol!) I just turbo pulse it a few times. Yummy!
-
Thanks Jo, will read through and give them a go.
-
I am so pleased :D you have changed your mind, DH obviously has the faith in your cooking knowing that you can whip up wonderful food.
You really won't be 'Disappointed' anymore.
I just love mine and I have to admit the Demo I had really was week to say the least and the pasta that was cooked was just disgusting!!!!! :P
The food I cook my dogs (in TM) has more appeal
However I am a reall foodie and love to cook so it is the best investment for me and myt family. Christmas lunch was extra special this year with all the wonderful food prepaired in TM.
My best tip is use the varoma setting and experiment.
Good luck
-
Glad to hear that all worked out - belated welcome & Jo is great to have as a consultant
