Title: How many doz eggs do you use in a week?
Post by: the_vermins on November 17, 2010, 01:30:48 am
Just curious as to how many eggs people are going through in a week?

Had Bimby now for 3 weeks and we've been going through a good 3 doz eggs a week! That's a LOT of eggs! That said, I've bought hardly any packaged stuff.  We've eaten all freshly made things which is marvellous. :)

Yeah, we go through about 3 dozen too - but that includes scrambled eggs for breakfast at least once, which is a dozen eggs in one go  :)

We use as many as our chooks lay.  Usually 4 a day - 28 per week.  :)

We would need a barn full of hens to keep up with us!  I had 10 hens for a while but they weren't great layers and had no chance of supporting our 60 - 70 eggs per week habit!!   We are a family of 4 and we generally eat 2 eggs per day each and then add on all the eggs I use for cakes/muffins (I use coconut flour and that requires a lot of eggs with it) zucchini slice, smoothies etc....
We LOVE eggs, I think they are a superfood packed full of goodness and nutrition. (provided they are from healthy and happy free ranging hens fed a nutritious diet)  The heart foundation gave them a terrible name for a long time but they have admitted they were a little hard on them.  Mind you, I notice they only recommend a few per week as part of your diet but I think that is just them not wanting to admit they were totally wrong about them!
But that is just my opinion!   :)
Oh gosh, I think that number is going to make lots of people wonder if I cluck!

We are a little overflowing with eggs here this week so what have you been making to use up 3 dozen a week?
(Realised the overflow situation so boiled eggs for tomorrows school lunches, dd3 and I had eggs for lunch and made muffins so working through the back log but more ideas greatfully received.
Oh and answer to original question, we tend to get 3 a day from the chickens so I guess around 21 a week.

Gee I feel relieved that it is not just me going through copious amounts of eggs! LOL!

I use them a lot in baking, cooking, everything really.  We have a big cook up of bacon and eggs on Sunday's and the kids have LOVED the custard.  Now to get DH to bring some more eggs home... LOL!

I miss my chickens   :'(  We moved to town and have to buy eggs now, so I had to cut down on how many I use - those good quality free-range eggs are expensive!!  :-\

I'm happy to pay $4-5 per doz for free range at the farmers market.  Rather my money go in their pocket than every other tom dick and harry in between.

I think we might invest in a couple of chooks for our yard.  Would help our egg consumption! LOL!

We're not massive egg eaters. But with quiches, icecreams and goodies we go through nearly 2 dozen a week.

No shortage of eggs here as the chooks lay 4 a day.   Just the 2 of us so I give away eggs that are over.   Depends on what I am cooking,  but use 12-18 per week.

I'm a lightweight on the chooks! We only have two and I guess on top of the 14 a week I would by another dozen or two. I love eggs.

It depends on how many cakes I make every week. also, the number of sorbets and custards. Maybe 3-4 dozen?

We use as many as our chooks lay.  Usually 4 a day - 28 per week.  :)

Snap!.....that is unless the dogs don't get to them first  :-)) :-))......which has been happening often, as the silly girls keep changing their laying pattern!
Our dogs have beautiful shiny coats though  :D

We certainly don't go through anywhere near as many as any of you.  DH will not eat a cooked breakfast, cold cereal it must be but I can give him eggs for tea when we've had a big lunch.  I never keep count, just buy them as I need them and would never not do a recipe because I thought there were too many eggs in it.

It fluctuates in my house from week to week, sometimes a dozen other times it's more.

I'm a single person but I manage to use a lot of eggs in baking.  I get eggs delivered by a man who raises and shows "ornamental" poultry and they do produce eggs, sometime spectacular ones.  I never know what color I will get because most are brown but there are always some aqua, some a dark mahogany brown and occasionally pink ones.  They look like colored Easter eggs.
He also includes guinea hen eggs on some occasions and more rarely duck eggs.

He usually brings me  three dozen every two weeks but sometimes I have to buy more at the store if I'm doing a lot of baking or making something like meringues or sponge cakes that take a lot of eggs.  (I have one recipe that uses 20 egg whites!)

The elongated egg with the pointy end right in the center is from one variety of guinea hen and the very pale blue one in the upper right is another variety of guinea.  He has another variety that produces buff colored eggs with black speckles but he only has a few of them and rarely includes their, much smaller, eggs in my basket.  These are almost alll large or extra large size.

we too love our eggs, i would say we would go through 3 or 4 dozen a week. i have a fussy 3 yr old who loves eggs so we all have scrambled eggs for brekky each morn, sometimes he will want them for dinner, then add in all the cooking we do.  i really think they great for you, and i find myself craving them when i have been doing lots of exercise.
love them pretty coloured eggs andiesenji

Great for decorating for Easter.  Do they lose their colour when boiled Andi - I guess not. I have never seen a basket of naturally coloured eggs before, thanks for the lovely picture.

What gorgeous eggs! I wouldn't be able to crack those blue ones.

We go through about 3 dozen or so, depending on whether I'm home to cook. I've been busy with my business and with local government, - meetings, meetings!
I can buy free range from our local store, since my DD's chook yard still needs to be fixed to keep out the foxes.

It's amazing the colors that some exotic poultry produce.

The most famous are the Araucana chickens, made famous by Martha Stewart at her place in the Hamptons, where she had a good-sized flock.
Some people are cross breeding some varieties to get chickens that lay eggs of more than one color - they are loosely called Easter Egg chickens in the U.S. and most serious breeders are not wild about this as you really never know what the offspring will produce, if at all.

They don't lose much color when boiled, unless I add vinegar to the water.

Sam has one breed of chicken that lays light brown eggs with tiny red speckles.  So far he has only three hens of this breed and they are seasonal layers and when the hens begin laying in the spring, he plans on keeping all the eggs to incubate.

Some of his chickens are housed with roosters and as I prefer eggs that have not been fertilized, he brings me eggs from the hens that are kept separate.

Andi,  these are just beautiful.   My chooks are ISA Browns,  little egg laying machines.  Very ordinary looking eggs.  They lay 1 a day for a year,  and then mostly stop laying or lay an egg every couple of days.

Andi what gorgeous eggs.

Bluesed I wondered who could possibly use that many eggs until I saw who it was posting. I had a good laugh.

It depend on whether or not I'm have a protein shake for breakfast.  If I am having one everyday then DH usually does too soo that's at least 1 dozen there plus the baking.  So I'd say 2 - 3 dozen.  Our 9 chooks aren't the best layers and some of the eggs also get given to some of our staff (the chooks are at work) so I usually have to buy a dozen or so every couple of weeks.

I must remember that variety Chookie.  We are trying White Rocks this year (for some larger eggs) but they have gone broody.  We don't have a rooster so it is futile and a pain (no eggs).  Any tips to discourage broodiness??  I have carried them off the nesting boxes and closed the hen house today.  They were very cranky with me.  >:( >:( >:(

Chelsea, I found a great thing online once about broodiness - basically putting them on a raised grid surface (can't think how to explain it, metal plate like chicken wire/gate) so they can't get comfy to nest. But never had to do it so can't quite remember.
Our Isa's are also our best layers.

I have 6 Isa Browns- They are rescued Chookies- X Battery Hens. Their feathers are slowly returning which is good.
We generally get 3 or 4 a day and on the odd occasion get 7. Id say we would use about a dozen (just the Two of us)
I like to give my mum eggs too as she happily brings lotsa scraps for them too!

I made the Almond Pav from the EDC the other day (first time ever) and I stuffed up the first batch so that was 8 eggs then only had 6 left so ussed them for the second try. I think its because I used milled raw sugar- too heavy i think. Soo my hubby enjoyed scrambled eggs the next day- 14 egg yolks- needless to say he doesnt feel like eggs this week!!!

Andiesenji, I have egg envy  ;D ;D.  I love my chookies and have a few different varieties, but mostly get brown eggs.  I have a lady close by who breeds lavender araucanas.  They are beautiful unusal looking chooks - for those Harry Potter fans their heads look like a hippogriff, and they have lovely bluish feathers.  I really want some blue eggs for my basket.  We go through about 3 doz a week here and at the moment have to buy eggs  :P :P because I have a couple of mummies and another who wants to be a mummy.  We had a rooster but he got eaten by a fox  :'( :'(, so for one of my broodies I got some day old chickies and popped them under her at night.  The next morning she had adopted them and looked very pleased with herself.  JUst hope not too many are roosters and in a few months my egg production goes up.

I spoke to Sam, my egg man a while ago and he has sixty+ laying hens right now.  He has a dozen Orphington/Barred Rock crosses that lay the most, red-brown eggs.  Eight Leghorns that lay white eggs, 15 Araucanas that lay the aqua eggs and 8 Americaunas that lay blue-green eggs and about 10 Araucana/Orphington crosses that lay either buff-speckled or pink eggs, sometimes a hen will produce both colors - three of these crosses lay the buff eggs with red speckles, very pretty.  He recently got some Wyandotte hens that are just now reaching egg-laying age.  They are almost as large as the Orphigtons.

These all produce an egg a day and often the Orphintons will produce an egg every 15 to 18 hours - he calls them his egg "machines" but all his layers are free range, as are the guineas.  He has both the Buff Orps. and the Blacks.  Mature they can weigh up to ten pounds.

He has several other chicken breeds but they are not all reliable layers and as he is building his flock, he sets those under a broody hen.  Some of the fancy chickens are broody but don't lay well (silkies, for instance).   I've seen some of the fancies and they really don't resemble "normal" chickens.    He trades with other breeders and has a rooster that is extremely colorful.  It hatched from an egg that was supposed to be from an African jungle fowl  that was shipped from a breeder in Florida.  He has not yet turned it in with the hens.

Sam called me a while ago and said he has counted all his chickens.  He has in total 183 of which 44 are pullets and the others are fancy "show" chickens that are kept separate from the others, except for some of the older ones that are his "broodies."

He also has fifteen guinea fowl, too many ducks to count, 5 geese, and in his game bird houses 50 pheasants, and 200 quail, 100 partridge, plus a few other odd ones and two peafowl who have the run of the farm and which, along with the geese, are the "watchfowl" as they give a loud warning whenever any strange animal or human appears.
All his chicken runs are completely enclosed with wire mesh because there are coyotes around and also hawks that prey on loose birds.

We have two chooks atm and will be getting some more at Christmas time from my sister. We get two some days and 1 another day and depending on where I'm at with cooking depends on how many I use. Really don't know what quantity of eggs we use a week.

I ended up with kidney problems many years ago from eating too many eggs a day for too long so am careful with how many I eat - obviously too much protein in my diet for my kidneys to cope with at the time.

Ahh yes the little chickens are growing by the day, Roxy! They are very cute!!
Not sure how many eggs we use in a week but definitley depends on how much cooking I do. I had too much stuff in the freezer when I got my thermie so haven't been able to have a really big cookup!!! (2 of us don't eat enough!) Will need to before christmas though.
I get a variety of coloured eggs too, mostly brown with a few blueish ones. Have cross bred a few of the chooks so some of the eggs are a real green/brown/blue! Thankfully the inside is the normal yellow coloured yoke! Have had a couple of friends not want the blue eggs....funny!!
