Title: Hungarian Goulash recipe review - MWOC Page 122
Post by: judydawn on November 07, 2010, 08:08:27 am
Have never tried the Goulash recipe from the EDC but we had this one for tea tonight (made it yesterday so the flavours were probably even better today) and it gets the thumbs up from us. Has anyone tried both and do you have a favourite?

My all-time favourite Goulash recipe is in a 1972 recipe book by Elizabeth Sewell called Casserole Cookbook and I will one day incorporate her ingredients into this recipe to see if I can replicate it in the TMX.  In the meantime, this recipe will certainly suffice.  4.5/5 only because Elizabeths is the best I have ever tasted but 5/5 for the ease of making this one.

Thanks Judy. I bought MWOC from Kathryn at our get together but haven't made anything from it yet.

Thanks Julie.
Cookie, I often take MWOC to bed with me - I love that book and wish all the recipe books had pictures.

from MWOC have made: potato soup (p80) chicken braised with red peppers (p114) steamed veges, and rice with sweet n sour sauce (p148) hummus (p196), milk bread (p250),  and have enjoyed them all thoroughly and will make again. I have put a postit note next to the goulash to say you think its nice, and will give it a go  :-*

Thanks CP63. I love it when we have suggestions etc on here as I go to the book and do the same as you. Then when I'm looking to do the weekly menu plan I see little post its everywhere and it helps me decide.

DH has made the Hungarian Goulash from the EDC twice now, and each time it has been really delicious.  He has added some spinach to it, and extra capsicum, and served it with mashed potato.  There is lots of sauce compared to meat, but with the mash it was OK.  The sauce was really thick and rich and tasty.  Definitely got the thumbs up from me - especially since I didnt have to cook it myself  ;)

Will have to try the MWOC version and compare.

DH is cooking Hungarian Goulash Sunday week. He is making the family recipe from his dads side (Slovak) and I Will make a TM recipe.

I don't have Mwoc! So please could someone pm or post the recipe. I know there is a recipe in the  edc but thought the other version might be better.

Of course I will finish first, but am interested in the taste difference.

Thanks

Hally :)

Yes we have about 2 kgs of goulash!

I have frozen 3 meals with rice for lunches or for left over nights.

Well the verdict is ........drumroll please..

DH was the winner with DS.

They looked like 2 different meals.

DH and I liked TM better, it is def more of an adult taste than Nanna's recipe.

This recipe has been handed down through the family and  is very very delicious, it was adapted i would say to make the meat go further to feed a large family. It had a lot more tomato in than mine and would be a meal on it's own with potatoes, carrots and peas added.

DS loved it.
