Does anyone know much about Rice Bran Oil?
I noticed it is on special at Woollies next week for $12.99/4ltrs. It says it' got a high smoke point, light flavour and no cholesterol. I'm wondering if it would be a suitable substitute for EVOO.
Thanks
Jodi

We first came across this in New Zealand where it is used very often if not all the time.
We now use this instead of olive oil and are very happy with the flavour and ability of it

Hi, I use Rice Bran oil often, but I use it when Olive Oil isn't appropriate ie wok frying, other asian foods, dressings etc. It has little flavour unlike olive oil and is great for cooking when you need a higher temp. So not really an alternative to EVOO (though obviously you can use it then)- more an alternative to Peanut, Sunflower oil etc. And definitely an alternative to Palm Oil which is environmentally a big no no.

Thanks a million girls. Might be worth the purchase then. I'm sure it will get used! No shortage of cooking in our house. ;)

I too use rice bran oil for the majority of cooking, and olive oil when prompted to in breads and some salads.
It does have a high smoke point, and doesn't seem to taint the flavours of food.

I use rice bran oil in the wok as I HATE oil spitting at me and this is really good.
-
I use rice bran oil for frying, including deep frying and olive oil/evoo/light etc for adding to food whether for flavour or as part of a recipe. :)

I use rice bran oil all the time as it has no cholesterol as well. DH, who is a stick carries his "fat" on the inside and we have to keep an eye on his cholesterol. So when I found rice bran oil we switched!! Not that we use a lot of oil anyway. We very rarely deep fry anything!! But we use it for all other things when oil is needed in recipes. It has no flavour. And it's a great price too!!.

I use it to make mayonnaise..........

I think I may have about 8 different oils in the house including rice bran. I would bet that andisenji would have far far more than I.

Does it get smelly like some oils do when you get it to high temperatures?
I can't stand the smell of oil.
-
I use rice bran oil all the time but didn't realise it would be better than olive oil in the deep fryer so will now make that switch. I hate the deep fryer but the kids like to deep fry their dim sims and my DH does a great battered fish in it. Thanks for that info.

We use RBO for frying too, but don't do that much frying. Higher smoking point so less nasties.
-
I too use it for mayonnaise and for all things oily when I don't want to change the flavour of the food. Highly recommended.
-
rice bran oil is also the only oil that is low salicylates so great for people with leaky gut syndrome or food intolerance.
-
I like rice bran oil for cooking. The worst oil for saturated fat in my opinion is coconut oil.

Actually, although coconut oil is a saturated fat it's very good for you. Coconut oil is being touted as a wonder oil in many circles.
People are returning to saturated fats because many of the poly unsaturated ones become trans fats when heated.
I love both rice bran and sunflower oils. I rarely deep fry.
I use rice bran in my skin care products as its such a light oil and it has great antioxidant properties.

Rice Bran and EVOO are my main oils, too. I had never used RBO prior to getting on this forum but use it as my main alternative if I am not looking for an olive oil taste in my food. I don't use much coconut oil, but, having read quite a bit about it, I feel that it is a really good oil as well and I should start looking to use it more often.

I use EVOO, and rice bran oil for frying..
-
I use RBO - have not noticed any smell when reaching high temps
-
We use Rice bran oil for...pretty much everything! In the deep fryer, frypan, bread, well...cooking!! Does not smell as bad as normal oil in the deep fryer. :D
-
Interesting might have to buy some rice bran oil
-
We use it but haven't thought of it for the deepfryer, will have to give it a go.

We have used rice bran oil for years, rarely do I use anything else and it's great for deep and shallow frying, I buy it in the spray oil too
