Title: New TM user - Demak
Post by: demak on October 22, 2010, 09:56:55 am
I should have said that I am from Perth Western Australia, so looking forward to hooking up with other TM users in this part of the world.

I steamed some fish the first night that I got my TM and the smell lingered in the Varoma and the bowl.  I cleaned it with suddsy warm water but had to leave the TM bowl and the Varoma outside overnight to get rid of the odour.  Don't know if I will do that again, unless someone has a great idea to share to aleviate this prob.

Cheers.

Hi there and welcome  :D
I have lightly coated the fish with EVO and so far never had smelly endings!
Somebody here recommended rubbing the smelly plastic parts with a paste made up with baking soda and washing up liquid and a tiny bit of water. Should that not do the trick, try also rubbing lemon slices all over and let the juice dry on the offended parts Hope it works for you as it has for me  :D

Hi Demak,

Welcome aboard. Great to see someone else from Perth.  I am too.  What part of Perth are you from. I'm in Alexander Heights.

I had a problem with odour lingering in my TM too from when I made the Butter Chicken recipe.  All I could smell was the spices that I'd roasted and ground.  I used some bicarb and wiped some lemon over it.  Left it to air over night and the smell did fade.  It didn't seem to effect anything else I'd cooked though.

I'm not sure if you were to line the Varoma with baking paper, if that would make any difference.  I've only used my Varoma to make dumplings to go with the Beef Stew so far.  Lots more practice to be had.

Good luck.
Jodi

Hello again Demak. It would be lovely if you could make it to our next Perth get together. See here for all the details. It would be lovely to meet you.

If you damp some baking paper up and scrunch it a little and use that to steam your fish on, it will help you.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice.

Jodi I am just around the corner in Balcatta.  The smell is gone thank goodness.  I tried the basic bread mix last night with my own milled wheat, but i did not read the recipe properly and put way too much yeast in.  Ended up a little brick, but am going to do Isi's Portuguese bread recipe tonight.  Have just put some ice-cream in the freezer to harden, so cant wait till I can tuck into that.  I love the way I was able to throw everything in the bowl and walk away and put another load of washing on.  Sure beats cooking the custard mix over the stove before freezing.

I work full time so get togethers during the day could be a bit tricky.  I do get the occasional Friday off, so if you have any dates in mind Cookie that would be great.

Hello demak, welcome to the forum. Hope you've worked out the smell problem with your varoma dish.  I've never had a problem, I just rinse it out under cold water immediately then wash in warm soapy water afterwards. The worst problem I've had is little bits of fish sticking to & filling up the holes - they take a bit of flushing out so maybe paper is the way to go.

I use the TMX brush for those Judy. Or I should say DH does as he washes the dishes and I dry.
