Title: Have you sold/got ri any of your other kitchen items now you have the thermomix?
Post by: Mali on July 03, 2010, 12:25:33 pm
Hi all, I will be in the future getting rid a few items from my kitchen. Firstly because they are now no longer used and I don't think I will use them and secondly to offset the cost of the thermomix.

I'll be getting rid of these items;

breadmaker
steamer
magic bullet
hand chopper/whisker
ice cream maker
juicers x 2
scales x 2

thinking about getting rid of the magimix and possibly my Kenwood Patissier although I'm not quite sure yet.

Have many of you ruthlessly decluttered or do you advise keeping some items?

I got rid of my breadmaker, stab blender and that's about it.  :)

I still use my juicer (an Oscar single geared due to heat/centrifical force/nutrition concerns of my own)
my ice cream maker (after mixing in the TMX)
my kenwood chef (for mixing extra recipes when TMX is busy cooking etc)
and my scales (electronic) for measuring sourdough feeds and other amounts when the TMX is in use.

I gave away my breadmaker and rice cooker, have kept everything else even though I don't use them.

I think I need to be ruthless really, and honest about what I do use and how frequently. I have too many gadgets taking up too much room anyway. I can't justify keeping things I don't use really...done that for far too many years. :-[

I freecycled our food processor but kept my braun stick blender (with small food processor bowl), aside from this we were pretty low tech.  I love the stick blender for small amounts of food.

I've basically kept mine for when DD shifts. She does use the rice cooker and a couple of other things when we are away.
I no longer use my bread maker, rice cooker and stick blender. I still use my hand mixer on occasions for cakes and egg whites.  I have a perfectly good Kenwood in the cupboard but I don't think I would get rid of that.

I still use my rice cooker too... it's great for making larger amounts of rice and for bulking out meals.  The TMX wouldn't cook enough to serve my 4 and I.  ;)

I think the TMX has just encouraged me to use my other kitchen gadgets more...

We rarely use the stovetop now.. just the oven.  :P

I gave my breadmaker away virtually straight away.

I could also do without my food processor and juicer (don't use or particularly like either of them).  I could get rid of my blender (I hardly used it even before the TMX) but it is just so pretty so I probably won't.

Definitely could not get rid of my scales.  I have two - a "diet" one that does small quantities very accurately which I use all the time (even with the TMX).  The other ones just look pretty.  I'll also keep the hand mixer (for when TMX is in the wash) and stick blender.

I have an icecream maker that belongs to my DD put away now for when she moves out of home. My DS had bought a Bullet with all the attachments so that is likewise aside for when he moves out. I have 2 Sunbeam mix masters to go. Have kept and still frequently use my rice cooker as I do larger volumes of rice than the TMX can cope with, my DH has insisted on keeping the stick blender as he still uses it. He had bought the kids an ice shaver so that has also been put aside for whoever wants it when they move out. I still use my breadmaker as we make a loaf a day and I haven't had the time to be using the TMX all the time for bread.
Am borrowing a dehydrator at present to try drying my fruit roll ups and other bits and pieces as my oven is too hot for the roll ups and the DC love them.

I gave away my rice cooker.

Still kept my stick mixer, will use it to make soap.
I kept my scales too, for getting exact measurement of knitting yarn for dyeing - the TMX scales aren't accurate enough.
Still use my SCer a lot too.

Have to keep my bread maker cause it was a gift after we got the TMX. Even though we never use it.

I only use my Kitchenaid mixer and the Thermomix now.  I have the pasta attachment to my Kitchenaid which is fantastic, after making the pasta dough in 2 minutes in the Thermomix.  I haven't bought pasta in months and actually made the Lasagne from the EDC for dinner tonight.

kezza, I've often thought about getting that pasta attachment for my KA. Just not sure if I'd use it enough.

I've put away my breadmaker and food processor, still love my SB for quickly whipping some cream up in a container and then storing it in that container, put away my rice cooker as well. I keep my electric beaters for catering jobs - not that I do that anymore, but often caterers in our town will need to borrow them!

I can't imagine giving up my rice cooker (well maybe one of them, lol, have an electric one but since getting a tupperware microwave one I don't use it), I can run the rice cooker at the same time as the TMX and then dinner is twice as quick (eg last night stroganoff and rice - stroganoff 20 mins, rice 13, so all ready in under 20 mins plus a couple of minutes prep.
Will get rid of the food processor (never used it, hated it and the cleaning, lol), the juicer (same stopped using it due to the cleaning, love the tmx juice, I rather keep the fibre in), will throw out the blender bits (had a big issue beginning of the year where two blender glass jugs got broken in a week and I refused to replace - so was hanging out for the TMX for that).
scales, like Carrie use them for yarn. Also just handy to have around. I hadn't premeasured something the other day and would have meant stopping and measuring with the TMX.
Got some ice crushing kids drink making machine thingy (not used it in a couple of years) and that can def go.
I haven't done icecream in the TMX yet and I love my icecream maker so sceptical on that, but imagine I'll keep it.
Keeping slow cooker (though it's on it's last legs, will get another), stick blender. Little electric beaters, guess one day I'll give them away as can't see I'll use them again.
I hate my breadmaker and haven't used it in a long time, dh will probably want to keep. Can imagine using it for timed overnight bread though.

Im a bit of a hoarder too... But I am determined to learn how to use ebay to sell my Food processor (wedding present- only used twice in the 3years I’ve been married) Blender that only ever got used to process pumpkin soup so that’s been made redundant with the TM, Magic bullet.
I’m sure there are more things hiding in the back of the cupboard. The wedding dress is going on that list to sell- cause I pray I never have to use that again!!

I don't use my old Magimix much - but still, after having it for 30 years... how could we part.

On the contrary the TM has created a joy of cooking and as a result I have I have actually BOUGHT other appliances since I have owned the TM  :o

I have bought:
*a rice cooker (TM quantity is too small for a family of 5, plus the TM is often busy cooking the meal togo with the rice  :P)
* a slow cooker. I actually dont like that the TM blades have to turn during "slow cookin" mode (reverse/speed soft) and I think it mushes stuff too much. So often I prepare the ingredients in the TM and then tip into the slow cooker to cook.
*about to purchase a seperate mixer (like kenwood or kitchenaid etc) to use in tandem with the TM for baking.

I did get rid of my stick mixer though  :P

Meganjane, I think once you used the pasta attachment to the KA you would use it, as it is so easy.  I know it is expensive, but I was lucky that my children bought the attachment for me for mothers day.  The only other kitchen gadgets I will buy from now on will be for TMX or KA - I love them both!

My family must eat minuscule amounts of rice!!! I was astounded when brazen20au said it didn't feed her family of 5 either. I feed 7 and 5 are adults - maybe I need to feed them more rice  :o :o :o :o

MJ I have the pasta roller and love it. I plan to use it to make lavosh or similar biscuit mixes when I am back in Perth and in the swing of things.

Well is a combo of my family LOVING their carbs so much that the TM basket doesnt make enough rice. But also the TM is usually too full to fit the basket in  :P. Plus I like my rice 'pure' and not flavoured with the thing thats cooking in the TMX. All up its just easier to cook the rice seperately  :)

I normally cook mine first (so no flavours) and put it in the thermoserve as you are right, there would never be enough room in the bowl if I was cooking for the family for it  to fit it on top  :o :o
