Title: easy raw apple 'jelly'
Post by: zebraa on June 28, 2010, 05:07:04 pm
juice an apple - add a touch of water if you need too but not too much - you want an intense taste
pop about 80mls into a small glass and add 1 or 2 tsp of chia seeds
mix
leave in fridge for 10 or so mins to set
voila! easy healthy 'jelly'. My kids and their friends love them.

That's a great idea Zebraa.  I guess it would work for other fruits too?  My girls have never had jelly before - I'm so cruel...

Put pieces into the TMX and blitz the hell out of it?   ???

That's what I'll be trying, although it's very thick and pulpy.  Might still work, but otherwise I guess you could strain it?

maybe if you added a couple of ice blocks as well to help emulsify the pulp to the juice and then not add the water after. That could work.  :)

I just quarter it and blitz on 6-8 for 30 secs, then add a bit of water and do it on 9 for 2 mins to get a good texture. It does't matter if it is pretty thick as you want the end result thick and 'jellyish' anyway.

Other fruits would work as well - strong ones would be better - eg pineapple. Kiwi fruit and apple would be a good mix - would jide the chia seeds from picky kids too

Where do you buy chia seeds?

Hi sharonpharm, welcome to the forum.  I've seen them in health food shops but have never checked out the larger supermarkets to see if they carry them these days.

This is a great idea - thanks Zebraa!  I make my own healthy jellies from fruit juice and bits of fruit, honey to sweeten if needed, and gelatin or agar agar (and I often add chopped pecans too) - works beautifully!  Must post my Christmas one, as it's coming up quickly!...

Health food shops and organic market-type shops have chia - and recently I saw them in our local Woolies - kept in both their health food section, and also in the cooking section with the dried fruits and nuts

Is there something in the chia seeds that sets the apple into jelly??

Yummmmmmmmy. I hardly ever look at this section, I need to do so. Now I know why my linseeds go all jelly like when I soak them. Obviously chia seeds do the same.

i tried making this today with frozen raspberries and regular apple juice , it didnt set, think my pots were maybe 120ml, i put ion 1 .5 tsps chia in so probably not enough for a very liquid consistency. my 3year old drank it though so didnt go to waste and she got the healthy seeds too.
