Title: Changing Ovens

I have just changed over to a gas stove from electric and the oven heat is nothing like the electric one. Has anyone else found that the gas oven hasn`t got the heat of the electric ones?  I tried cooking some bread rolls the other day and instead of cooking them for 30 min or so, I had to cook them for about an hour, with the oven as hot as it would go. Same when trying to cook a cake. Bloody heck. It looks like I made a big boo boo going for gas. Has anyone got any tips that they could share with me about using the oven. Thanks Sandy

My last 3 ovens have been electric Sandy with gas hobs and apparently is is reasonably hard to even find gas ovens these days as most people do prefer electric ones.  A friend rebuilt their kitchen recently and I know they had very little choice when it came to buying a gas oven which is what they wanted.   Have you compared cooking times for certain things in the recipe book which usually comes with a new oven eg bread or rolls as against those on the forum or in our recipe books.  That might give you an indication of the difference in heat output and cooking times.  Good luck, hope you can work through it and get to know your oven.

Is it LPG/bottled gas?  I find gas ovens to be superior if they are with natural gas, but not the bottles.

The restaurant ovens with gas go to 300 deg C no problem pretty quickly.

Sandy,  get on to the maker,  that is not right.   I have used gas in the country,  and it got very hot very quickly.

My last oven was on bottled gas.....and was very unpredictable with cooking  :-))
My best advice is to purchase a cheap oven thermometer, and check the temperature.  When I did this, I found the heat was out by 30c, so it affected everything I cooked, and then had to adjust the heat settings.

It is on LP gas and Maddy that`s a great idea. I will buy a thermometer and see just what temperature  the oven is at. I wonder if a lolly thermometer would work ok or not. Thanks all.

Intrepidtrier, I wouldn't use a lolly thermometer.
You need one like this, that hangs off the shelves

They are inexpensive, and you can find them at some supermarkets or kitchen stores.

I've had two gas ovens and hated them both. We're on bottled gas and we're the retailer here, so I did really want to use gas. Electric is so superior, and you don't run out half way through baking a cake!!!  Unless there's a power failure, but even then, and electric oven holds its heat for ages.

I hope you can sort out the temperature problem Intrepid, as maddy says one of those thermometers will help. I always used one in my gas ovens.
