Recipe Name: Curried Beef Mince with Cabbage
Book Name: Budget Busters Booklet
Score: (out of 5*) 0/5
I was hoping that this would be a replacement for the family favourite Beef Chow Mein or Ki See Mein - very similar ingredients except used a packet of Chicken Noodle Soup Mix instead of all the spices.
It was not. Maybe it's that the combination of spices are not to our liking? But we won't be making it again.
-
Thanks for that Cathy. I'd say that has to be about the lowest score ever given to a recipe here. It doesn't really look that appetising.
-
Nothing beats Chookies Chow Mein - have you tried that one Cathy
-
No I haven't tried that one. Will have to check it out.
Low Score - yes I think you can work out that that's code for....
-
Wow - taht is bad. Not sure if I have seen the recipe. Maybe just needs tweaking with different herbs and spices ?
-
When I read the spice ingredients, I knew my family wouldn't eat this one.
I will make chookies chow mein this week I think.
Speaking of chow mein......after putting so much time, thought and variety into the meals I make, hubby turned around and told me his absolute favourite meal was......... chow mein :-)) :-)) :-))
A little annoyed....I told him to jump into his tardis with his tastebuds, and transport himself back to the 70's pronto! ;D
Will keep the man happy and make it for him anyway ;)
-
Got to keep those men happy Maddy ;) ;) Chookies version is one I have been cooking for at least 40 years and it is loved by everyone - so good for the children with all those vegies in it too. I love it with mashed potato and any leftovers I pour over whole baked jacket potatoes for another meal. It freezes well too.
-
That is like my hubby Maddie who gets huffy if I don't serve up sausages at least once a month!!! Thankfully now I have JD's curried snag recipe to keep him happy.
Thanks for the review Cathy. I had often wondered about this recipe but was unsure about the ingredients. Now I know - just don't go there!!! ;D
-
Ahhhh men !!!! you've gotta luv us :-* :-* :-*

mmm. I made this last night and it did not go down well. I make a similar curry with coconut milk but without the cardomom, celery or cabbage which is very nice. I think I'll stick to that next time I'd give it a 2/5 my hubby gave it a resounding thumbs down!
I am getting very frustrated that the recipes I am making from the books are not well received because I love my Bimby (her name is Rosie!) and I want to use her ALL the time. At the moment my hubby sees her going in the evening and just groans! I think a lot of the recipes need serious attention and will make sure I check out any reviews where possible for tweaks before! trying them out from now on!
So far my hubby has only liked the beef stroganoff and the beef bolognaise (ragu).
Men!
Edit - oops. sorry thermomixer!!!
-
Sarah, that's the helpful thing about reviews, although we all have different tastes too.
To get hubby on board, maybe get him to look through your books for something he likes the sound of. Then hop on here and have a look for any reviews before you try it. Might help.
Or, have a look around the forum for member recipes with good reviews. Let us know what flavours he likes and we might be able to suggest some winners.

Thanks Cathy. After last nights dinner I've been thinking of doing just! I have 4 TMX books now and there are so many recipes I want to try but I'm reluctant to. At this point I should admit my husbands is a really fussy eater :( and trying to find food that he will eat and enjoy is hard, especially if I want my kids to eat it too (DD4 and DD1)!
Any suggestions would be much appreciated :)
Basically he only eats chicken (breast only) or beef. Loves garlic, onion and chilli - and lots of it. We eat a lot of curries and just got the Indian cookbook 2 nights ago so I'll be trying out a few recipes on the weekend.
He doesn't like fresh herbs at all, but especially hates fresh coriander and dill. And now I know that he hates cardamom too ;-)
Not a big fan of creamy stuff, we tend to substitute cream for a lesser quantity of yoghurt or sour light cream. And he's not a big fan of pasta. I think he would like the fettucine salami dish if I served it up, but he's a bit fat concious at the moment so would probably be upset about the fat in the meat. Sometimes, like last night I end up chucking a tante and telling him he can cook his own bloody dinner from now on.... but he only cooks steak!
Thanks!

Well sara30 you can without hesitation put the blame for this fair and square at you mother - in -l aws feet!
:-)) :-)) :-))
Don't that this to your kids or in 25 years your son-in-laws will be blaming you for tastless meals. :D :D :D

OMG :-)) he is a fussy eater. I would buy him a steak every day then (for him to cook and enjoy himself) and then make what I wanted to cook :D then there would be no problem ;D
-
Good Idea CreamPuff63, I know someone who does just that. Steak every day and egg sandwiches is all the man eats and he is now 70 years old. Give the man what he likes I say. No use butting your head against a brick wall. Frustrating but for a happy life feed the man his chicken and meat. More important things in life to worry about.
If my husband could cook he would eat sausages every day of his life but as he has not one skill in the kitchen so he eats what he is given or he wouldn't eat.
I did once feed him sausages, mash and peas every day for a week and he still says it was the best week of his life and he is 81.

My dh doesn't cook either, so basically eats what I make for him. We are catering for two small children too, and it can be tricky balancing out what parents like and would kids will like.
This Chicken in Yoghurt (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=26.0) might be worth a try. We really enjoyed it a few times, always without the chilli for the kids. Fresh coriander is definitely not required. It sounds like a lot of yoghurt, but I think it'd be worth a shot.
Try giving him some ownership of what meal you're going to cook. Then if he doesn't like it, you don't have to feel so bad. And hopefully the Indian book might help.
-
Sarah, it is going to be hard for you with a fussy husband like that. Normally it is the kids who are fussy ??? ???
When I was reading what he likes, I was thinking Nico's Thai Chilli Chicken (which I gave my visitors for lunch today and they loved it) but then read on and he doesn't like fresh herbs and that was the end of that. I would try Chookie's Chow Mein from the forum - it is great. In fact, try anything from the forum with reviews or photos and if you are planning anything from a recipe book, get DH to check the ingredients and see if he fancies it then see if there is a review on the forum. If not, ask if anyone has done it as some people do recipes but don't post reviews. Other than that, I'd also do what the girls suggest - give him steak and you do other things for yourself. He may be tempted to ask for some of yours and eventually you will find something other than steak that he will eat.
Gretchen, how could your husband eat sausages every night for a week and make that comment. Guess we are all different but I think you were probably hoping he would be sick of the sight of them and never want them again - unfortunately that was not the outcome. Gotta love a man who knows what he wants though. ;D ;D ;D :-* :-* :-*

Gretchen I love sausages, mashed spud and peas. We don't eat sausages very much now though.

Blimey! It is nice to know that there is another DH who could eat the same food everyday. With mine it would be egg and chips. But he can't boil an egg so he gets a "varied" diet courtesy of me and the TM.

We should move our DH's in together. Mine would also be happy to live on eggs & chips & could probably manage to cook them as well. :D

If he can cook sausages Very Happy Jan can I send my DH over as well?

I'm sure we could fill a house with this type of DH - problem is whose house are we going to fill ;D ;D
-
Bags not Dawn. One is enough. ;D ;D ;D

If it was my house that they all came to I'd be on the first plane to someone else's house ;D
-
That was the general idea VHJ - round them all up and leave them to their own devices. They'd soon be begging us to come home and cook whatever we wanted for them ;D ;D ;D
-
We girls would have to keep the address secret otherwise they would find us.
;D ;D ;D

Imagine all the laundry they would give us. I must admit my DH is pretty good telling me about things he doesn't like-even if it takes him 40 years sometimes. He usually says he will eat anything as long as he doesn't have to cook it.

Yeah and somethings he told me 40 years ago he is still telling me. Hello, am I not listening? 45 years next month. Yikes :o

Thanks girls you have kept me laughing over the antics of our DH's.Between us we could compile a book, "Tips and Hints"on how to groom a perfect husband. :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

45 years Gretchen - thats fantastic. Congrats. I tell my DH I would have been out on parole by now if I'd murdered rather than married him. ;) ;)

could be the reason why the marriage has been so successful so far? ;D ;D ;D God bless selective hearing :D (well it always worked for my DH when the kids were little)

I'd planned to make this but then after reading this review, nearly changed my mind....but I soldiered on, determined to make it edible...
In the end I didn't mind the finished product. The flavours were similar to a home made indian curry, I left the celery out as i'm not the biggest fan. And served it with rice noodles as thats what I had on hand.
I think it would be nicer if you used diced chuck steak and doubled the cooking time or something like that. As the mince is quite mushed by the end of the cooking.
I don't think I'll be racing to make it again, then again i don't make many recipes twice unless I love them...too many to try! ;)
-
With the leftovers I made some nice toasted pita breads....
Pita with cheese on half of it and beef and cabbage mix on the other half, heated under the grill and then folded over.....really yum!
So much so that my mum wants to make it just so that she can make these for lunches!
-
Worst meal ever in the 1 year I've had a thermomix! It's my 1st ever disappointment to come out of my Thermomix!
All of us said no way, threw it out and ate sandwiches for dinner!
It wasn't so much the flavours as the consistency and timings, just all bad. This recipe was the first I've tried out of 'Budget' cookbook, hope they improve.
-
I've never made this but have made other things from this book. I was pleased with them.
Perhaps check the reviews on here before you try anything else.
-
I haven't cooked it but to be honest the recipe title has "warning"all over it- not too many fabulous things come out of mince and cabbage!
-
It doesn't sound appealing to me at all.
-
I remember when I first made this - :-X :-X Not great at all!
Chelsea (Thermie Groupie) has posted a really nice chow mein recipe, I don't know how to link to it but if you do a search on the forum home page for Chelsea's Chow Mein (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=7032.0), you should find it ok.
Done for you KT2 ;)
