Interesting - I've been pining after tapioca or sago for a while, but I can only find it with preservatives in it - both at the supermarket and the health food shop.
Any ideas?

I just can't believe it Cathy!!! You wouldn't believe how fanatical I am with looking at labels so when I read this I was like, " No way!" :( - ran to my cupboard to look at the fresh packet I just bought -- "Ah SULPHITES!!! NoWAY!!!!" >:(:o I'm so mad with myself - now why do they need to put that on sago?? ??? :'(
:-[ Sorry Delveen for having a mental breakdown on your thread! If it is soaked I use the Cream rice recipe from the EDC and sub sago for rice. ;)
-
Sorry to ruin your day Nay-nay. I was hoping for the opposite and that someone had found a brand that was okay.
-
Might have to find another tapioca recipe. Sure I'd seen one in a TMX book ??
-
Yes TMXER it's in the Breaky section under "tapioca fruit ceral". I love tapioca/sago made on coconut milk! Mmmm Yum! ;)
-
Ta :-* :-* :-*

theres a breakfast cereal one in the EDC on p35 and a Tapioca Pudding in 'Healthy Eating with Cyndi O'Meara" on p36
-
Yeah - that's right! Cindy O eats it! - She must have found one with out the sulphites. :-\

I use organic Tapioca pearls . The brand is: Markal.
I adapted the recipe from Nourishing Tradition and soak 150g tapioca in 950g milk overnight in the fridge. Cook it for 10 min/100°C/Speed 1 and 30 Min/90°C/ :-:/Speed 1. Add 3 egg yolks with 50g rapadura and lime zest, cook another 5 Min and add the whipped egg whites.

Thanks Tebasile. I'll keep looking and see if I can find some. At least I know it's out there now.
-
You're welcome Cathy. Let me know, if you need some ;)

according to the failsafe sites (sue dengates sites) it's like gelatine with the sulphites, in that they get boiled off. Hope that helps.

This is the best tapioca pudding I have ever had - I have made it a few times now. Wonderful TM recipes on this site.

I've moved Intrepidtrier's recipe here too as so many of us have made it.
1/2 cup tapioca
3 cups whole milk
1/4 tsp salt
2 eggs
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla
What I do is heat the milk to nearly boiling and then add the tapioca and salt to the bowl and let it sit for about an hour stirring every so often to stop the tapioca sticking together. Then simmer for about 5 minutes on reverse speed, add the sugar and then keep cooking until the tapioca is soft, beat the eggs and add some of the tapioca to them and then put back into the bowl and cook for about another 2 - 4 minutes until the egg is cooked and the tapioca is thick.
-
I made this last night and we really enjoyed it. I cooked the tapioca at 1000 for about 8 minutes. It seemed to cook quickly after the soaking. After adding the egg I cooked it for the 4 minutes. After it was in it's serving bowl I just grated a bit of nutmeg over it. I love nutmeg over those sorts of things.
Oops, I see in the photo I forgot to brush the nutmeg off the bowl. :'( :'( No more close ups.

Don't worry about it
ChookieCookie, looks great. I loved this recipe but must admit I hated it when Mum used to make it when we were kids - bet she didn't put an egg in it :-))
-
Judy, I think these Chookie/Cookies are getting to you. :D :D
-
Thanks C o o k i e, a slip of the 'h' :D :D
-
I don't mind in the least. Happy to take credit for all Chookie's recipes as well as my own. ;D

I buy Sago flour at my local middle eastern store. If you can find a similar store in your area, look for the product there.
It is not "halal" if sulfites are added and can't be consumed by Muslims because of religious restrictions.
There are many products that I get from this source because genetically modified plant products are also not halal, or at least not yet.

Good work cookie1 - I like nutmeg so it's not a problem :-* :-* :-*

Cathy79 - I spoke to the health food shop in Grand Central ages ago (which also doesn't stock preservative free sago/tapioca). The told me they could order it in though.
